In this week's episode, we're taking a closer look at the sneaky side of nutrition—starting with hidden sugar. From yoghurt and oat milk to savoury sauces and baby food, we reveal just how much sugar is lurking in everyday items—and why it's so hard to spot on the label. Weight loss jabs like Ozempic and Mounjaro are still dominating headlines, but behind the hype lies a deeper conversation about self-worth, body image, and how 90s diet culture continues to shape our thinking. We share a powerful reflection from Elizabeth Day on the inner critic, societal pressure, and what true body neutrality looks like in 2025. We also break down the latest ultra-processed food research, including shocking new stats on early death risk. Are UPFs as dangerous as the data suggests—and what can we actually do about it? Plus, the baby food pouch scandal has reignited debate about infant nutrition. We unpack the findings, the marketing spin, and why transparency is urgently needed in this space. Elsewhere, Rhi reveals the surprising truth about plastics in activewear, Ella shares her take on the “bed rotting” trend, and we answer a listener question on the best ways to cook your veg without losing nutrients. Added Sugar vs Natural Sugar: What's the Difference? Nutrition Nuggets 116

My Wife The Dietitian

What's the difference between sugar and added sugars, and do they affect my body in the same way? This is a great question from a listener that we address today. I think we all know that there's a lot of sugar in the typical North American diet. Many of the foods that we buy from the store have an assortment of added sugars with various names and from different sources. Having too much total sugar can be detrimental to our health and may promote inflammation. It could also damage blood vessels, affect the gut in a negative way, and have ripple effects on most of our body systems and long-term health. In examining different types of sugar, we can ask ourselves, is this sugar ok, or is it the kind I'm supposed to avoid? Is there a difference in the body? How much can I have in a day? So many good questions about sugar. In answering this listener's question, Rob and Sandra cover some basics around carbohydrates, complex and simple sugars, with some information around where sugar is in our typical diet and what foods have 'natural' sugars and which ones have added sugars. We're diving into how poor sleep is linked to poor egg quality. If you're struggling to fall asleep, waking up in the night, or getting out of bed feeling exhausted—this isn't just a sleep issue. It's a signal that your body is out of alignment, and for those navigating low AMH, DOR, POI, poor egg quality, or recurrent pregnancy loss, sleep disruptions can be a major red flag. In the Fab Fertile Method, we know that consistent, restful sleep plays a critical role in regulating hormones, supporting egg health, and optimizing fertility. But if you're constantly wired at bedtime, wide awake at 2 a.m., or dragging through the day despite 8 hours in bed—there's likely an underlying imbalance at play. In this episode, we dive into how sleep issues can be linked to blood sugar swings, adrenal dysfunction, inflammation, liver congestion, and more. And most importantly—we'll share the first steps to rebalance your body and reclaim the deep rest your fertility depends on. Sleep is not optional on the fertility journey. Let's uncover why your sleep is disrupted—and what to do about it. This episode is for you if: You have DOR, poor egg quality, or low AMH and struggle with waking up in the middle of the night, falling asleep, or feeling exhausted. You want to understand how hormonal imbalances, blood sugar issues, and stress impact both sleep and fertility. You're looking for functional medicine strategies, including the Fab Fertile Method, to improve sleep, support ovarian health, and enhance egg quality naturally. In this episode you'll learn: How blood sugar crashes disrupt your sleep and impact fertility by spiking cortisol and affecting hormone balance. Why adrenal dysfunction keeps you awake at night and sabotages progesterone production needed for conception. How gut imbalances and inflammation interfere with sleep and hormone production, affecting your fertility. Why liver congestion causes sleep disruptions and blocks detox, which is essential for healthy egg quality. How magnesium deficiency and hormonal imbalances impact both your sleep and your fertility, preventing you from reaching your full potential. --- RESOURCES "

121: Reversing Diabetes with a Whole-Food Plant-Based Lifestyle with Lewis Bertus

NHA Health Science Podcast

Type 2 diabetes affects more than 422 million people worldwide, yet many don't realize that it can be reversed with the right approach. This figure comes from the World Health Organization (WHO) and unfortunately, continues to increase.  Lewis Bertus, PA-C, is on a mission to change that. As the founder of Diabetes180, Lewis has helped countless individuals transform their health using a low-fat, whole-food, plant-based approach. Featured on the NHA Health Science Podcast with Dr. Frank Sabatino, Lewis shares his groundbreaking methods and personal journey, which combines professional expertise with deeply rooted values. A Holistic Start: From Theology to Medicine Lewis's foundation in holistic health began early, growing up in the Seventh-day Adventist faith, which emphasizes the connection between physical and spiritual well-being. His undergraduate studies in theology further shaped his belief in holistic healing, and his early career in community outreach gave him firsthand experience addressing preventable health challenges. “I grew up understanding that if you nourish the body correctly, it can heal itself,” Lewis said, crediting his upbringing for introducing him to plant-based principles long before they were mainstream. Personal Experience Sparks Professional Mission The inspiration behind Diabetes180 came from a personal challenge—helping his wife reverse her diabetes. Despite following conventional dietary advice and even experimenting with a keto diet, her condition persisted. Frustrated but determined, Lewis dove deep into research and implemented a low-fat, whole-food, plant-based diet. “Within six weeks, her blood sugar normalized,” Lewis shared. “Her success became the catalyst for what is now the Diabetes180 program.” Breaking Down Diabetes: Addressing the Root Cause Contrary to popular belief, Lewis explained, type 2 diabetes isn't caused by carbohydrates. Instead, he highlighted how excess dietary fat creates insulin resistance. Excess dietary fat creates a barrier that prevents insulin from effectively delivering glucose into the cells. By focusing on a low-fat, whole-food, plant-based diet, clients in the Diabetes180 program can significantly enhance their insulin sensitivity and take meaningful steps toward reversing diabetes. The Diabetes180 Program: A Path to Transformation Lewis's three-month program offers a comprehensive approach to reversing diabetes, focusing on: Dietary Transition: Guidance on adopting a low-fat, plant-based diet. Mindset Coaching: Practical tools for managing stress and fostering a positive outlook. Exercise Recommendations: Customized plans incorporating both aerobic and resistance training. Lewis's wife, a former diabetic, co-leads the program, bringing personal insight and emotional support to clients navigating similar journeys. Tackling Sugar Cravings and Integrating Fasting Addressing sugar cravings effectively requires a complete dietary reset, as gradual changes often prove less successful. The program also incorporates intermittent fasting as a powerful strategy for clients with persistent insulin resistance. By synchronizing eating patterns with natural circadian rhythms, fasting promotes faster recovery and supports improved metabolic health. Bridging the Gap Between Patients and Physicians One of the biggest challenges Lewis faces is overcoming the widespread misconception that carbohydrates cause diabetes. By educating clients—and sometimes their physicians—on the science of insulin resistance, Lewis helps pave the way for sustainable health improvements. Lewis ensures that clients understand his role as a supportive coach and resource, complementing the care provided by their primary healthcare team rather than replacing it. This collaborative approach empowers clients to make lifestyle changes while maintaining the guidance of their existing medical professionals. Ready to Reverse Diabetes?
