Struggling with sugar cravings, emotional eating, or feeling stuck in your weight loss journey? What you'll learn: Why your brain gets stuck in unhealthy habits (and how to rewire it) How to manage cravings without willpower or restriction The key to staying consistent without feeling overwhelmed It's time to shift your mindset and finally lose weight in a sustainable way. Let's do this together! Mentioned in this episode:
If you're dealing with a health issue, your underlying trauma might be the source, and this top doctor says if you don't address it, it will continue to manifest in different ways. The solution? Resetting your nervous system. Dr. Aimie Apigian, a double board certified physician with master's degrees in biochemistry and public health shares completely paradigm-shifting ideas about the science of how all of us are dealing with trauma that's impacting our bodies at a cellular level and exactly what we can do to change that.
Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, an Integrative Medicine physician, researcher, and best-selling author specializing in chronic fatigue syndrome, details “adrenal fatigue,” contrasting Endocrine Society guidelines focused on overt adrenal failure with his view that the adrenals can be functionally exhausted and may be missed by standard testing and “normal ranges.” They discuss adrenal roles in stress response, blood sugar regulation, blood pressure, immunity, and symptoms suggesting low adrenal function (irritability when hungry, sugar cravings, fatigue, recurrent infections, lightheadedness/brain fog, mood shifts). Contributors include high sugar intake, chronic stress, dehydration, and salt restriction, with modern media fear/divisiveness cited as a major stressor; hypothalamic dysfunction and circadian rhythm disruption may cause “tired but wired” insomnia. They cover options such as licorice (not DGL), dietary and lifestyle changes, Adrenaplex, adaptogens (ashwagandha standards, HRG80 red ginseng study), phosphatidylserine for high nighttime cortisol, cautious low-dose hydrocortisone thresholds, and DHEA/pregnenolone considerations, plus resources at endfatigue.com.

Sugarless: Dr. Nicole Avena on Hidden Sugars, Brain Addiction, and Practical Steps to Cut Back: Neuroscientist and author Dr. Nicole Avena reveals sugar's pervasiveness and health impacts, drawing on her book “Sugarless: The Seven-Step Plan to Uncover Hidden Sugars, Curb Your Cravings, and Conquer Your Addiction.” Avena explains how modern industrialized, highly processed foods—many containing added sugars—have transformed innate preferences for sweetness into harmful overconsumption linked to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and possible dementia via insulin signaling changes. She discusses research showing sugar can stimulate dopamine reward pathways similarly to drugs and that prenatal exposure may alter offspring metabolism, preferences, and sensitivity to drugs/alcohol. For solutions, she discourages strict “cold turkey” approaches due to hidden sugars and relapse psychology, emphasizes inventorying sources and triggers, starting with eliminating sugar-sweetened beverages and sugary coffee drinks, improving breakfast, choosing protein/fat-based snacks, and viewing alternative sweeteners as a temporary crutch; she also notes diet changes can improve mood stability and reduce anxiety.

Struggling with sugar cravings? Want freedom when it comes to food? Today we explore the impact of sugar on your body and health and I walk you through strategies for overcoming sugar cravings and making healthier choices. I dive deep into the importance of being in choice around sugar and food! Mentioned in this episode:
Revisited from April 2025What's the difference between sugar and added sugars, and do they affect my body in the same way? This is a great question from a listener that we address today. I think we all know that there's a lot of sugar in the typical North American diet. Many of the foods that we buy from the store have an assortment of added sugars with various names and from different sources. Having too much total sugar can be detrimental to our health and may promote inflammation. It could also damage blood vessels, affect the gut in a negative way, and have ripple effects on most of our body systems and long-term health. In examining different types of sugar, we can ask ourselves, is this sugar ok, or is it the kind I'm supposed to avoid? Is there a difference in the body? How much can I have in a day? So many good questions about sugar. In answering this listener's question, Rob and Sandra cover some basics around carbohydrates, complex and simple sugars, with some information around where sugar is in our typical diet and what foods have 'natural' sugars and which ones have added sugars. Send us Fan MailEla and I were wondering about our topic for this week and a recent episode of Dragon's Den got us thinking about sugar, continuous glucose monitors and the absolute fear we have around "processed sugar".On Dragon's den, the dragons were tasting a new type of oat energy ball and each of them tasted it, agreed how delicious it was and immediately said that because it tasted so good, that meant it must be bad for you. Steven and Deborah both declined to invest on the premise that the sugar content was too high. So, we thought- let's talk about sugar and do some myth busting around sugar being part of a healthy diet, sugar cravings, keto diets, different types of sugar and why demonise ANY food is damaging to our health. We also talked about habituation, which means facing our fear foods by giving ourselves full permission to eat that food, and what emotions that brings up for many of us.Have a listen and let us know what you think. In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, my guest is Dr. Charles Zuker, PhD, a professor of biochemistry, molecular biophysics and neuroscience at Columbia University and an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). We explore taste perception and how the brain transforms chemical signals from food into distinct taste experiences. We discuss how these taste signals shape both conscious choices and unconscious behavior, as well as how food preferences can change over time. Additionally, we discuss gut–brain signaling and explain why sugar is especially powerful at driving cravings. Read the episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. Nutrition Nugget! Bite-sized bonus episodes offer tips, tricks and approachable science. This week, Jenn is talking about zero-calorie drinks and whether they are really the guilt-free option we have been led to believe. A well-known Copenhagen study compared four groups of people who drank a liter a day of regular soda, diet soda, milk, or water for six months, and the results were surprising enough to stop anyone mid-sip. Could a beverage with absolutely no calories still be working against your blood sugar, waistline and your metabolism? What do your gut, your pancreas, and even your taste buds have to do with it? Jenn digs into the science, questions the study's details, and shares what she has seen play out in real life with herself and her clients for years. But before you toss your diet soda or defend it to the end, you should hear what Jenn has to say about who this affects, why, and whether the calorie count on the label is telling you anywhere near the whole story. Last week, I shared something that challenged the norm:I no longer believe it always takes 3–6 months to change behavior. In this episode, I go deeper. If meal plans worked then why do we need to keep giving them week after week…If detoxes create momentum, then why do our clients go back to eating junk after the detoxes are over?If accountability is important, then why do our clients continually go through the shame spiral?And....Why do clients still go back to the same food? Why does the same pattern repeat — often at the same time, with the same trigger, and the same emotion? After 15+ years as a board-certified health coach, yoga teacher, hypnotherapist, and somatic practitioner, I realized something critical:Health coaching often focuses on behavior, recipes, and food allergy elimination. But cravings are formed at the memory level. In this episode, I share: • Why clients relapse after detoxes because of old memories • The “path in the grass” metaphor that explains automatic habits • How emotional relief gets attached to specific foods • My own struggle with French fries and white-knuckling discipline • The moment I realized discipline wasn't the issue • Why pattern interruption is the missing layer in the coaching industry • How ancient wisdom + neuroscience changed my approachIf you've ever wondered:“Why isn't this sticking for my clients or me?” “What am I missing since my clients keep sabotaging themselves?” “Am I a bad coach?”You are not alone. You're not missing willpower. You're missing the pattern interruption. The recoding.Next week, I'll break down how cravings are actually formed in the brain — and why changing one key element can collapse the entire pattern. In This Episode You'll Learn:• Why is behavior the last step in the change process • How repetition creates automatic “paths” in the brain • Why white-knuckling never creates lasting freedom • The emotional layer beneath recurring cravings • How combining yoga, hypnosis, somatic work, and energetic healing creates faster resultsFor Health, Nurtirion And Wellness Coaches & PractitionersIf this episode stirred something in you — pay attention to that. There is a deeper way to support clients. And over the next few episodes, I'll continue unpacking the layer most coaching programs never teach. If you want to connect directly, send me a message at
If you're over 50 and sugar cravings feel stronger or harder to manage than they used to, you're not imagining it.In this episode (which I recorded a few weeks before my 56th birthday), I talk about what's actually happening in the body after midlife and why the strategies that used to work often stop working. For most of us, shifting hormones affect blood sugar, stress, sleep, and cravings, so it's understandable that sugar can start to feel like the quickest way to calm yourself down. But sugar's not a real friend. It's a coping mechanism that will end up sabotaging your best efforts. So in this episode, I share practical, real-life examples of how to build new coping skills and regulation pathways that don't rely on sugar or snacks. The reality is that cravings may happen in your life, but by supporting your nervous system, your gut, and your hormones, you can learn to develop regulation tools that are realistic and sustainable for you, so that you don't need to turn to sugar and comfort foods anymore. To get my personalized guidance to stop emotional eating and break free from cravings, plus support and accountability... apply here to join the 90-day program, Freedom from Cravings Formula TODAY.Do the Cravings Quiz and take the first step to get rid of your cravings! Sugar cravings in early sobriety make sense. What many of us don't expect is still needing something sweet months or even years later. In this episode, we're going to unpack why that happens, what sugar is really doing for your nervous system, and why this phase has less to do with food and more to do with healing. Thriving through Menopause with Fitness, Fat Loss and a Focused Mind
Have you ever thought, "Okay Kris… I get the mindset stuff. But what do I actually DO when cravings for sugar hit?" This is Part 3 of our Breaking Up With Sugar series, and today we're getting very practical. If you're navigating menopause, battling cravings for sweets, dealing with emotional eating, or feeling frustrated that belly fat won't budge, this episode is for you. In the first two episodes, we talked about blood sugar and mindset. Now we're talking about what you can physically put in your body — and what you can do — to reduce cravings physiologically. I'm sharing tools like apple cider vinegar for blood sugar support, fuel-pull preloaders, peppermint for nervous system resets, and on-plan replacements that prevent deprivation without triggering a spiral. Because breaking up with sugar isn't about white-knuckling. It's about stabilizing your body so your mindset has a fighting chance. Press play, take notes, and then come connect with me in the Facebook community. And if you're ready for deeper support, the Midlife Fat Loss Formula is where we walk this out together. MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:
A lot of women are stuck in a cycle of eating less, pushing harder, and starting over every Monday, only to feel more frustrated each time. The surprising part is that this isn't a lack of discipline, but a predictable outcome of years of under-eating and following advice that was never built for women's physiology. We dive deeper into this in the Broads podcast with Finley. We talk about why intermittent fasting often backfires for women, how sugar cravings are usually a fueling issue, what chronic under-eating does to your metabolism, and what sustainable nutrition actually looks like without diet culture noise.Finley Amato Funsten is a nutrition and strength coach, the founder of Unfuck Your Diet, and the owner of MADabolic Charlotte. If you or your clients know what to eat, have followed detoxes and eaten healthy for weeks, and still have food cravings... this episode is for you!In this episode, I challenge one of the biggest beliefs we were taught in health, nutrition, and wellness schools — that behavior change takes months. After over 16 years as a board-certified health coach, yoga teacher, hypnotherapist, and somatic practitioner, I no longer believe that timeline is always true.Because sometimes the craving isn't about discipline. It's not about calories or motivation. It's about memory.I share the moment I realized meal plans weren't enough — and how focusing on one specific food pattern at the root led to shifts that didn't take months… they took minutes. You'll learn:• Why sugar cravings are linked to emotional relief, not nutrition • How the brain creates automatic comfort patterns • Why willpower-based coaching keeps repeating the cycle • The identity stories (not good enough, not worthy, not disciplined) that drive self-sabotageThis episode is for health coaches, practitioners, and healers who feel there's something deeper happening in session — and are ready to explore the missing layer.Next week, I'll go further into what traditional health coaching leaves out… and why that changes everything. If you've ever quietly wondered why your clients relapse and you've questioned whether you're missing something…You're not alone. And you're not wrong to feel that something deeper is at play.Over the next few episodes, I'll be unpacking the layer most health coaches were never taught — and how it transforms your sessions. In the meantime, you can check out some of the courses I offer on visibility, hypnosis, and neuroscience.Coaches, Yogis, Reiki Masters, and Healers Who Want To Be Seen And Paid!Tired of overthinking, feeling like a fraud, and hiding in the shadows? "I love reframing cravings as a way that your body is trying to communicate with you, because to me that seems so much kinder than labeling them as something bad or wrong."Diet culture has a sneaky way of showing up in our everyday lives, whether it's feeling out of control around sugar, getting weighed at the doctor's office, or worrying about how society's obsession with thinness is impacting our kids. In this Q&A episode, I answer common Instagram questions with no blame or fear. We talk about what really drives cravings, how to advocate for yourself in medical settings, and how to support kids in building a healthy relationship with food and their bodies.✅ What You'll Learn:How to understand intense sugar and chocolate cravings without shame or self-blameWhy eating enough and breaking food restrictions matters for intuitive eatingWays to practice habituation and make peace with food you fearTools and scripts for advocating for yourself with weight-focused doctorsTips for fostering a healthy relationship with food and body in your children, even amid diet culture pressuresWhy compassion and small steps are the key to moving forward...no all-or-nothing thinking required

So many of us have tried to white-knuckle our way through one food plan after another. But what if health isn't about eating perfectly—but rather about building habits that actually bear good fruit in our lives? In this episode, guest co-host Brandice Lardner and I unpack why “perfect eating plans” so often fail, especially for Highly Sensitive Christian women. Brandice introduces the idea of fruitful habits: flexible, grace-filled practices you can evaluate by their outcomes, not whether you followed every rigid rule. We explore how reflection (not rumination) helps you learn from your choices why giving yourself permission actually reduces food obsessions what it looks like to “marry wants with wisdom” without shame or fear If you're longing for a calmer, more sustainable approach to food—one rooted in grace, discernment, and real-life rhythms—this conversation offers a hopeful way forward.Links mentioned: Episode #303: "Why It's Hard to Trust Your Body — Especially Around Food" https://cherigregory.com/episode303/ Order Brandice's new book Fully Nourished: A Grace-Filled Approach to Ditch Diets and Find Peace with Food and Your Body https://amzn.to/3Z3q5SL You can get her free 7-lesson "Faith > Food" email course right here https://gracefilledplate.com/faith-food-email-course/ Check out Brandice's Website: Grace Filled Plate https://GraceFilledPlate.com Take the “Am I a Highly Sensitive Person?” Self-Quiz https://CheriGregory.com/hspquiz/ Learn about the "Write Beside You" Unlimited Coaching Program and the "Clarity in Your Calling" Mastermind https://sensitiveandstrongbook.com/wby-unlimited-coaching-program/ https://sensitiveandstrongbook.com/clarity-in-your-calling-mastermind Chapters (00:00:00) - Grit and Grace: When Perfect Eating Plans Fail(00:01:19) - How to Trust Your Own Body(00:04:10) - Virtuous HABITS(00:09:02) - Introspection and Self-Compassion(00:15:33) - Why Is It So Hard to Overcome a Sugar Cravings?(00:22:18) - Living on a Diet with the Spirit(00:25:01) - Highly Sensitive Christian Women(00:27:38) - Marathon Author: The MDP Team

If you've ever asked yourself “Why can't I stop craving sugar?” or “Why do I feel out of control around carbs?”—this interview will change how you see your body, your brain, and your sugar cravings. In this powerful conversation, Eric Edmeades (founder of WildFit, author of Post Diabetic and The Evolution Gap) explains why sugar cravings are not a character flaw, a lack of discipline, or “just emotional eating.” They're often ancient survival wiring—a deeply human instinct designed to keep us alive when sweet foods were rare and seasonal. But today, sugar isn't seasonal. It's constant. And when your environment changes faster than your biology can adapt, the result is cravings, overeating, metabolic dysfunction, weight gain, and blood sugar instability. In this interview, Eric breaks down the difference between natural sugar in whole foods (fruit, honey, root vegetables) versus refined sugar and ultra-processed foods—and why modern “food-like substances” keep your appetite switched on. You'll also learn how ancestral food rhythms, metabolism, and food psychology can help you reduce cravings and rebuild trust with your hunger signals—without obsessing over meal plans, calorie counting, or extreme restriction. You'll Learn:Why sugar cravings feel irresistible (and why it's not about willpower)The truth about sugar: it's not evil—it's too availableWhy refined sugar and corn syrup behave differently in the body than real foodThe seasonal way humans evolved to eat (and why it matters today)How “always-available” carbs impact insulin, appetite, and cravingsWhy meal plans often backfire (and what to do instead)The 3 metabolic states humans evolved to run:Sugar burningFat burningAutophagy (cellular cleanup through fasting)How to retrain your intuition around food when your appetite has been “hijacked”A food-first approach to improving blood sugar, energy, and long-term healthIf you have ever felt powerless against sugar cravings, or wondered why you can't maintain weight loss despite "trying everything," this conversation will change your biological perspective forever.Enjoyed this episode? If you've been struggling with sugar cravings and wondering why willpower isn't enough, this episode will help you understand what your body is actually asking for. Sugar cravings are often treated like a discipline problem, but most of the time they're driven by physiology. Gut imbalance, blood sugar swings, cortisol patterns, and nervous system stress all play a role. In this episode, Janell Yule breaks down the three most common drivers behind sugar cravings and how to tell which one may be affecting you. You'll learn: • why cravings are not a personal failure • how gut health influences blood sugar and appetite • the role of hormones and stress in craving cycles • how the nervous system signals safety through food • simple ways to respond to cravings with support instead of restriction This episode is especially helpful for women who feel stuck in craving cycles and want to work with their biology, not against it.
