On episode 259 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello and AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer and Josh Parham to go back 10 years to take a look at the 87th Academy Awards, celebrating the films of 2014. Ten years ago, Hollywood's biggest night was won over by Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Birdman, a dramedy about a washed up actor trying to form a comeback away from the big screen and back on stage in New York City, and while doing this, also making sure he can keep him mind sane. The film was a critical, commercial success, though winning Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay for Iñárritu that night has put a target on his back for not only beating films like Boyhood and The Grand Budapest Hotel, but was the first of back to back years where the director found himself capturing Oscar gold. With these wins, it has become one of the most divisive years of the Oscars in recent memories, alongside a slew of other questionable winners and nominees inside a bountiful year of incredible cinema from the year 2014. A lot of Oscars from this year need to change hands, and the AW team is here to rewrite some Academy history. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 2014, briefly discuss talk about Birdman as a Best Picture winner, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to three films to make up the final set of five nominated films. Like past retrospective episodes, it was a fascinating, fun conversation including spirited debates, alliances, vote swinging, celebrating various movies, performances that aren't normally talked about and more that we all hope you enjoy. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 3h21m. We will be back next week to do discuss the latest film release, Blitz, and doing a character actor movie draft. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

It's Awards Season yet again. Here on the Holmes Movies Podcast that means, it is time for the Alternative Oscars episodes! AKA the Anders and Adam-emy Awards: Each episode for this series we pick a different year in Oscars history and attempt to correct the record, stripping the undeserving of their garlands while recognizing those who were cruelly overlooked. This time, we will be casting our eye back to… the 87th Academy Awards, the year that honoured the best films of 2014. It was held February 22nd 2015 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. It was hosted by Barney Stinson himself Neil Patrick Harris. It was an event that was marred by slight controversy after the nominations were announced. The hashtags #OscarsSoWhite and #WhiteOscars circulated around the internet after that. This was an Oscars event we wanted to look at and change somethings, as we did not agree with certain films getting nominated and others that did not. It was the year of Birdman Vs Boyhood. This week we are highlighting one of the conversations from MMA's 87th Annual Convention held at the Augusta Civic Center, October 4 & 5, 2023. This year's convention theme was "Lead, Motivate, Communicate" and featured dynamic speakers like Leila Brammer, Director of Outreach and Instructional Development of the Parrhesia Program for Public Discourse, University of Chicago on "Civic Leadership and the Imperative of Effective Communication" and Yellow Light Breen, President & CEO, Maine Development Foundation on "Leading for Economic Innovation and Prosperity", and an uplifting reminder of why we serve local government and how to not despair in these unprecedented times with a presentation from Ron Holifield, Chief Executive Officer, Strategic Government Resources and former City Manager, "It's Not About Me, It's Not About Now". An elections update session was one of many offered and provided by Julie Flynn, Deputy Secretary of State, Maine Secretary of State. In this episode we chat with Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows about security issues facing Maine's town and city clerks this election season on the convention floor. The audio quality is not the best, and for this we apologize but the message is still important and one we think is worth a listen.
3/4 Done. NHL Global Series in the books in the land down under and NHL training camps are underway with full throttle which can only mean that we are just few short days away from the opening night of the NHL 2023-2024 regular season. We've already covered the Atlantic and Central Divisions in prior weeks which means that today we'll have the Metropolitan Division on the plate to finish off the Eastern Conference before diving into the last remaining division the Pacific, which will be on the cards next week. Metro's power sctructure felt quite a shift during last year's regular season which has completely changed the outlook of the division itself where former veteran powerhouses Pittsburgh and Washington have become the underdogs facing a tough hill to climb when aiming to return back to postseason hockey after 1-year hiatus. Few teams were handed a platter full of tough love and I also got to give my honest opinion on the Mike Babcock situation so, listener disgression is adviced and if there's any Isles fans out there, let me know what's your take on your team's current outlook 'cause I've lost my patient with the leadership of your team and you are about to hear that in today's episode. 1 more to go! I joined 80,000 folks from around the world to experience my first Galax, the nick name for the festival for long time convention goers. Players from around the world compete on the historic Felts Park stage for different prizes. I arrived Thursday for the inaugural ‘Stories and Strings' event in downtown Galax.Featured in this mini episode are The Jack Tale Players from Ferrum, VA. I spoke with Emily and Rachel Blankenship-Tucker, long time members of the troupe. The main events begin Friday night, the first evening for full band competitions in the Old Time and Bluegrass categories. The Loose Strings Band opened the evening with The National Anthem; I walked around until I happened upon Trish Fore, the bluegrass banjo librarian for the Twin Counties. She was practicing with her band, Trish and the Wildcats, for their particular event.
