This special edition of Live Wire celebrates National Poetry Month, with performances by renowned poets Hanif Abdurraqib, Anis Mojgani, and Kaveh Akbar. Plus, former Poet Laureate of Utah Paisley Rekdal chats about demystifying poetry; singer-songwriter Kasey Anderson performs a tune inspired by a poem from his friend Hanif; and host Luke Burbank and announcer Elena Passarello share some original haikus penned by our listeners.
Kasey Anderson is a singer and songwriter from Portland, OR, whose latest record To The Places We Lived is one of my favorites of the year and maybe my favorite thing he has done. Kasey and I always get lost in the good weeds when we chat and this conversation is a good example. Y'all, it is my pleasure to bring you for the third time, my conversation with Kasey Anderson.
The band gets back together. Shawn Brown & Kasey Anderson join us once again to nerd out about some tunes and this time it's NOT a Seattle related band. We discuss "Hard Candy" from Counting Crows. And Dan Fogelberg. But mostly Counting Crows. And hopefully we can pull off a Kasey and Shawn concert in Florida in February. Who wants to join us for that?Check out Kasey at:https://www.kaseyandersonmusic.com/Check out Shawn at:https://www.shawnbrownmusic.com/Check out other episodes at RecordsRevisitedPodcast.com, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Castbox, iHeartMedia, Google Podcasts and Spotify. We're starting with the end in our conversation with Kasey Anderson. On the pod, we've covered a lot of firsts; debut album, origin stories and the beginnings. Ever since I (lizzie) have known Kasey, his social media bio has been "gradually retiring songwriter." I'm always teasing him about "What does that mean? When are you going to retire?" Officially, this latest album, 'To the Places We Lived,' is Kasey's "last album." I want to put that in very heavy quotes because I hate to imagine a world where a great songwriter friend of mine is not making records. I think his insistence on this album as the last one has more to do with saying goodbye to parts of the music industry that he wants to release and ways of being in the world that he doesn't want to engage with anymore. What do we need to let go of? What do we need to release? That's the place where this album begins. We talk about Kasey's whole songwriting career. The moment where he went surprise viral for one of his political songs, "The Dangerous Ones." We talk about his time being incarcerated and what that taught him about himself, what it taught him about the world, what it taught him about white supremacy. We talk about his family. We talk about his sobriety and his work in helping others get clean and stay clean, and what staying clean means in a holistic and gentle sense. The songs on this album are mournful, literate, and very, very fun. My favorite is "Back to Nashville;" it's a rock and blues song. Kasey is the type of artist who can write a really contemplative song about self reflection or grief or loss, and then a blues rocker that makes you want to shake your ass in the next second.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? We got the band back together! Another Seattle related band episode with repeat revisitors Kasey Anderson and Shawn Brown...this time Pearl Jam's "Yield."Plenty of other discussion including the 1998-99 Alternative overcorrections, conspiracy theories and JFK, Ticketmaster, the song that should have been a single, "We're all crazy," Hummus, souvenir keys, and more. The intro song is Kasey's "Believers" from his upcoming new album due in October. Spoiler alert: His album is REALLY FREAKING GOOD.One note: I overlooked that Pearl Jam was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance for "Do the Evolution" that was won by Page and Plant for "Most High." I didn't see the nomination because that category was discontinued in 2011. Sorry for the oversight.Check out Kasey at:https://www.kaseyandersonmusic.com/Check out Shawn at:https://www.shawnbrownmusic.com/Check out other episodes at RecordsRevisitedPodcast.com, Apple Podcasts, Castbox, iHeartMedia, Google Podcasts and Spotify. The guys are joined by repeat revisitors Shawn Brown and Kasey Anderson (remember the “Brad” episodes) to discuss the pinnacle album “Superunknown” from Soundgarden. Handsome Jack, Simple Kind Of LifeHandsome Jack, Got You Where I Want YouKasey Anderson & The Honkies, MylowKasey Anderson & The Honkies, Some DepressionWille and the Bandits, Good StuffWille and the Bandits, Will We EverJon Shain & FJ Ventre, Sinking ShipJon Shain & FJ Ventre, Overnight from MemphisBeth Hart, Black DogJoe Giddings, Down On The CornerNathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Love Me Till I'm GoneMiles Kane, Tell Me What You're FeelingMiles Kane, Nothing's Ever Gonna Be Good Enough (Feat.
