On deck: (6:45) I have to express my displeasure of the NFL ‘cannibalizing' themselves with the oversaturating of the sport with broadcasts on a million platforms. Games played on multiple days of the week, jamming down these contests down our throats. When is enough, enough? Week 17 is off to a rather brutal start. Other than Beyonce's halftime performance, the NFL games yesterday were unwatchable! There are questions emanating from all four contestants. Who's beating the Chiefs? Are the Steelers shrinking to where they won't be long for the postseason? Is this the Ravens/Lamar Jackson's year? Can you take the Houston Texans seriously? I'll go through the rest of the weeks schedule. I'll make a mention of two big losses in college football regarding personnel who will not play in the Notre Dame-Georgia Sugar Bowl matchup on Wednesday night. Also, former Eagles LB Bill Bergey passed away at the age of 79. CORRECTION: At the 11:00 minute mark, I mentioned Chicago is fighting for a playoff spot. It's Seattle. My apologies as I got carried away with my commentary throughout the podcast. (39:00) The NBA had their banner day on Christmas as Victor Wembanyama impresses, Luka Doncic goes down with a calf injury. Are the Sixers out of their early season malaise? What's going on with the Celtics? The Lakers win a classic as Austin Reaves saves the day with a triple double and game clinching layup. Off the court, Heat guard Jimmy Butler prefers to leave Miami for greener pastures. Where will he possibly end up? And is it possible that Wembanyama could be the face of the NBA down the road? (50:43) On the ice, the NHL has taken a few days off due to the holiday, which the Rangers have seem to be on an extended one, considering how they've played in the last month and change. Is another shakeup in order? The Sabres snap their 13 game losing streak in resounding fashion vs. the Islanders Monday, which segues to a diatribe on my favorite hockey team. Kudos to Sidney Crosby tying Mario Lemieux on the all time assist category in the league's history. (58:31) The MLB Hot Stove may cool off here, unless something sparks up over the last week of 2024. With Corbin Burnes, Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman and the like still available, could a transaction take place? If not now, when? I'll part with thoughts on Walker Buehler signing with the Red Sox and why the Mets did not have any interest? And can they sign lefty reliever Tanner Scott to shore up their bullpen? Dubbs and Joe spend the final hour of the show with special guests Craig Mish and Tom Vecchio to talk the MLB hot stove as well as the Christmas Day slate of matchups in both the NBA and NFL!
Salk opens the show frustrated over the Seahawks crucial loss to the Vikings, citing how many self inflicted wounds the Seahawks made in this game. Then, they go Around The Weekend with headlines from the rest of thee NFL, the first round of the College Football Playoff and the MLB Hot Stove with five first baseman going off the market via trade and free agency.
With the MLB hot stove heating up, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger visits the Jack Vita Show to break down the latest roster news, including Juan Soto's mammoth contract, the New York Yankees' attempt to replace Soto's production, and trades from both of Chicago's baseball teams. Rhett and Jack bring you analysis that you won't be able to find anywhere else! Major League Baseball is seeing a far more active offseason than it did a year ago, up to this point. On the Sunday night of the MLB Winter Meetings, Juan Soto signed a 15-year, $765 million contract with the New York Mets. In response to Soto's record-setting deal, the Yankees made a flurry of moves, signing Max Fried and Paul Goldschmidt, and trading for Cody Bellinger and Devin Williams. Days before shipping Bellinger away to the Yankees, the Chicago Cubs acquired outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros, in exchange for pitcher Hayden Wesneski, third baseman Isaac Paredes, and third base prospect Cam Smith. Tucker has just one year remaining on his contract, entering 2025. Will the Cubs be able to extend or re-sign him? Or will he just be a one-year rental for the club? Do the Cubs have the pieces to contend in 2025? How does Tucker transform their lineup? On the other side of the city, the White Sox dealt Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox for a haul of four prospects, which included 2023 and 2024 first round draft picks Kyle Teel and Braden Montgomery. Rhett and Jack assess the trade package, and discuss what they think the White Sox will do next. Rhett and Jack touch on other offseason news from around the league, and Rhett analyzes the offseason that the Los Angeles Angels have had. Jack likes the Angels' addition of World Series champion and longtime Cub Kyle Hendricks. Later, Rhett and Jack share some thoughts heading into the first ever 12-team College Football Playoff. Rhett is about to enter his seventh season as MLB.com's Los Angeles Angels beat reporter. Prior to starting on the Angels beat, he covered the Minnesota Twins for the same publication for eight seasons. You can follow him on Twitter, @RhettBollinger.

On deck: (6:53) Gearing up for the home stretch of the NFL season as teams continue to jockey for playoff positioning. One team that could be in danger of not having their starting quarterback is Eagles Jalen Hurts. How long will be out of the lineup? Can they survive without him for any length of time? The AFC North is even at the top with the Steelers & Ravens holding the fort. Will Pittsburgh hang on to win the division? And why it's important for them to do so? Lamar Jackson had a solid performance on Saturday against his kryptonite in black and gold. Is he bound to win a third MVP? Or is Josh Allen still the favorite? I'll share a comparison with both as super productive regular season players who haven't delivered in the postseason. I'll check on what else is happening in the NFL with the NFC South & West and the entire playoff picture in both conferences. (37:29) The first ever expanded college football playoff is in the books. Sadly, there was absolutely NOTHING to write home about. I'll breakdown how Clemson, Indiana, SMU and Tennessee fell way short of not just pulling off upsets, but staying in these games to compete and advance to the semifinals. I'm concerned that we may see the same fate in the next round where Boise State and Arizona State will get a crack against Penn State & Texas, respectively. I'll keep you abreast on the health of Georgia QB Carson Beck, who'll likely miss the quarterfinal matchup vs. Notre Dame as we look ahead to New Year's Eve and New Year's Day to the next round. (49:49) With the annual Christmas Day extravaganza for the NBA forthcoming, it's come under some fire as reports of a decline in ratings and interest with the Association has surfaced. I'll explain why that's the case and have a quick fix to remedy it. Will it happen? Is it way too late to do so? I'll peek in to what's going on throughout the league as the schedule is pretty light because of the upcoming holiday. (1:02:19) Are the Buffalo Sabres not going to make the playoffs again? They're in the middle of a 13 game losing streak as of today. When will they snap out of it? Can they get back to being in the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference? I'll see what's the latest in the NHL as they sport will head into a Christmas break after tonight. (1:06:19) Another passing of a baseball legend as I'll remember Rickey Henderson who died Friday night at the age of 65. The MLB Hot Stove is working overtime the past few days as there have been several transactions. The Yankees sign Paul Goldschmidt to play first base next year. Was that a good pick up? The Mets finally re-sign one of their own (no, not Pete Alonso) but pitcher Sean Manaea to a three year deal. They did miss out (and to my dismay) on signing Walker Buehler on the cheap. Guardian fans have a lot to be upset with as Josh Naylor gets shipped to Arizona. Why are they operating as a major league club if they can't re-sign their own players? Plus, other moves by the Phillies, Astros, Rangers and A's that have made news over the weekend. I'll spread a little cheer and some jeers as I'll start putting some gifts and coal around the tree as I get into all that's going on in sports as THISSSSS.. (6:49) College football fans have been waiting for this. The first ever twelve team playoff commences tomorrow night. I'll go through all of the major storylines (i.e. Ryan Day, Quinn Ewers, anyone? NFL swallowing up Saturday afternoon, etc.) preview each of the games, who's primed for an upset, the best game of the four. Wall to wall coverage of what to possibly expect between the matchups of Indiana-Notre Dame, Clemson-Texas, SMU-Penn State and Tennessee-Ohio State. (31:55) NFL Week 16 kicks off with a good one tonight with tiebreaking implications as the Broncos-Chargers will go at it. Saturday games are re-introduced to us as Houston-Kansas City and Pittsburgh-Baltimore will headline the day. Sunday and Monday are lacking in comparison. Will Michael Penix Jr. deliver for a Falcon team that's been reeling? Can the Lions hang onto to that much needed one seed in the NFC to get a much needed bye in January? (52:42) Have the Milwaukee Bucks turned the corner? After a brutal start to their season, they've come all the way back to win an NBA Cup on Tuesday night over OKC. Is this a springboard to get them back to the top of the Eastern Conference? Then you have a scenario where players have criticized the new All-Star Game format. To whose fault does that fall under? I'll peek at the upcoming weekend schedule as there are a few games to sink our teeth into, including Karl Anthony Towns returning to Minnesota for his first game there since the trade to New York. (1:05:00) On the ice, the Rangers have maybe hit rock bottom. They got shutout by one of the worst teams in the sport (Nashville) and the front office sent another player packing as former #2 overall pick Kaapo Kakko was jettisoned to Seattle. Is a turnaround forthcoming? I'll see what else is going on in the NHL as they inch closer to the halfway point of the season. (1:13:11) The MLB Hot Stove is still cooking these days. The Yankees remain aggressive as they acquire Cody Bellinger from the Cubs. How will he fare behind Aaron Judge in the Bronx? The Mets made a move themselves, but for a 5th line starter in a one, Griffin Canning, formerly of the Angels. Has anyone informed them that Juan Soto was an enormous signing, but their fan base wants more? Where does Nolan Arenado go after he refused a trade to Houston? (1:22:47) There's a heavyweight fight in boxing on Saturday as Tyson Fury tries to redeem himself after losing to current champ, Oleksandr Usyk back in May for a second meeting. How will Fury fare here? Also, how far has boxing fallen to where the general public couldn't tell you who the heavyweight champion is? Flyers Head Coach John Tortorella delivered an impassioned press conference following the Flyers' narrow 4-3 defeat to the Bruins, expressing dissatisfaction with the officiating during the game. The page gets turned to not only November, but the fall & winter sports as they'll get their full attention with a complete breakdown on all that's taken place as the latest podcast is here. On deck: (6:23) Now that baseball is in our rearview mirror, football will be front and center as the main topic of discussion over the next few months. First up, the NFL. The big question at the moment are the Lions the best team in the league? They beat the Packers at Lambeau Field in their first outdoor game this year. Who in the NFC is going to beat the Lions, especially come January when they may have the #1 seed in the conference? How about the NFC West? What a wild division this is turning out to be as all four teams are separated by one game, with the Arizona Cardinals in first place! I'll go through a rough slate of games yesterday as we're approaching the halfway (or past the halfway point) of the season. Don't forget, tomorrow is the trade deadline at 4pm. Which players will be moved in the next 24 hours, with some requesting to go to Washington as reported? (30:19) Penn State comes up small yet again against their conference rival Ohio State Buckeyes, losing 20-13 on Saturday. Are they to be trusted come playoff time? There were a couple of other key losses to teams that are ranked in the top 25 (Texas A&M, Iowa State) which could keep them out of the tournament come late December? (38:42) Tension boiling in Philadelphia between Joel Embiid and a columnist? That's what happened as the former MVP confronted Marcus Hayes, which ended up in a shoving match. This is based on what Hayes wrote about Embiid professionally and personally. Was Hayes wrong? Did Embiid take this too far? There's a huge injury in the sport as Magic forward, Paolo Banchero will be out for at least six weeks until evaluated from a torn oblique. And is a 5 x 5 stat line (at least five in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks) en vogue after Victor Wembanyama did so a few days ago against Utah. NOTE: Some late breaking news during the recording as the New Orleans Saints fired head coach, Dennis Allen to no surprise after losing to lowly Carolina yesterday. (50:38) The Florida Panthers aren't suffering from a Stanley Cup hangover as they swept the Dallas Stars in another international series (this time in Finland) leading the top of the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference overall. I have to throw my two cents in on my beloved Islanders who have lost a couple of key players to injury and are looking mediocre as they'll end up being a fringe playoff team by the time we get to spring. And Alexander Ovechkin gets closer to tying Wayne Gretzky for the most goals scored in the history of the NHL. (56:46) Baseball may be on our radar over the next couple of weeks as players have opted out of their current contracts. (i.e. Gerrit Cole, Blake Snell, Corbin Barnes, etc.) Where will they end up? Also, the Braves have been wheeling and dealing, not resting on their laurels as we're just a few days removed from the World Series. Bob Costas steps down as an MLB play-by-play guy after criticism earlier in the postseason.
