Once upon a time, French philosopher Henri Bergson was the most celebrated public intellectual in the world. People stood in long lines just to get a glimpse of his lectures. He took the culture by storm, and had enormous influence on early 20th century thought across multiple fields. Then, Europe descended into war, the zeitgeist changed, and little by little he faded away. And in a post-war modernist, materialistic age, there just wasn't been much room for this unique philosopher of consciousness, creativity, and time who brought meaning and mystery to the lecture halls of Europe and the salons of Paris. Henri Bergson was thinking deeply about the philosophical implications of evolution all the way back in the 19th century. The originality of his thought has inspired an effort in a few corners of the academic world to revive and revisit his work and influence. Most recently, Dr. Emily Herring's new biography of Bergson, Herald of a Restless World, is garnering attention on both sides of the Atlantic. I'm thrilled to welcome Dr. Herring to the Thinking Ahead.

In the early 20th century, the New York Times dubbed French philosopher Henri Bergson as "the most dangerous man in the world." Bergson scared a lot of people in how he brought philosophy to the masses but he also won critical acclaim, receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature and France's highest honor, the Grand-Croix de la Legion d'honneur. Surprisingly, no English language biography exists of him. Until now. This week, Dr. Emily Herring joins in to talk about Bergson's rise to fame, his influence on 20th century thought, and the mysteries behind why he died in relative obscurity. About our guest:Dr. Emily Herring received her PhD from the University of Leeds and is now working as a freelance writer and editor. She is the author of the first biography of Henri Bergson in English, Herald of a Restless World. How Henri Bergson Brought Philosophy to the People (2024 Basic Books).

This week Coop and Taylor were joined by Emily Herring, a scholar whose work brings together intellectual history, philosophy, and the cultural currents of the 20th century. She's the author of Herald of a Restless World: How Henri Bergson Brought Philosophy to the People, a fascinating exploration of the life and thought of one of the most influential yet often overlooked philosophers of the modern era. Henri Bergson, known for his radical rethinking of time, consciousness, and human experience, captured the imagination of artists, intellectuals, and even political figures during the early 20th century. Herald of a Restless World: How Henri Bergson Brought Philosophy to the People (Basic Books, 2024) is the first English-language biography of Henri Bergson, the philosopher who defined individual creativity and transformed twentieth century thought. At the dawn of the twentieth century, Henri Bergson became the most famous philosopher on earth. Where prior thinkers sketched out a predictable universe, he asserted the transformative power of consciousness and creativity. An international celebrity, he made headlines around the world debating luminaries like Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein about free will and time. The vision of creative evolution and freedom he presented was so disruptive that the New York Times branded him "the most dangerous man in the world." In the first English-language biography of Bergson, Emily Herring traces how his celebration of the time-bending uniqueness of individual experience struck a chord with those shaken by modern technological and social change. Bergson captivated a society in flux like no other. Long after he faded from public view, his insights into memory, time, joy and creativity continue to shape our perceptions to this day. Herald of a Restless World is an electrifying portrait of a singular intellect. Emily Herring is a writer based in Paris. She studied philosophy at the Sorbonne and received her PhD in the history and philosophy of science from the University of Leeds. Her work has appeared in the TLS and Aeon. Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. In the early 20th century Henri Bergson was a rockstar of philosophy, able to pack lecture halls and create the first ever traffic jam on Broadway. Today he's virtually unknown in the English-speaking world, and Dr. Emily Herring is aiming to fix that with her book Herald of a Restless World. Book Club #114 - Herald of a Restless World - Richard talks to comedian and writer Eleanor Morton about her book about some notable women from history (some famous, others not so much) Life Lessons From Historical Women. Should Richard with his 2:1 in history have know about more of them than he does? Perhaps. They chat about why women (and non-royalty generally) are so badly represented in history, how history is more fun if you're allowed to be judgemental about the clearly horrible stuff, how even stories from as recently at the 60s show how pervasive certain ideas of women can be, how Eleanor chose her 18 people/groups to write about and how the book is more serious than one might have expected (but still has plenty of funny stuff in it too).Buy the book herehttps://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/herald-of-a-restless-world-how-henri-bergson-brought-philosophy-to-the-people-emily-herring/7697499?ean=9781529371918See RHLSTP recorded live - https://richardherring.com/rhlstp Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. Is being radical the point of Christianity? In this week's episode of The Missions Podcast, we dig into the archives for a conversation with Dr. Michael Horton as he talks about his book, "Ordinary: Sustainable Faith in a Radical, Restless World". Together they talk about how the modern rhetoric and mindset of needing to be radical and world-changers leads those in ministry to burnout, a performance mindset, and a works-based salvation. Michael reminds us that it is God's kingdom he is building, and that our ordinary actions and involvement in his mission are what we are called to be a part of. Dr. Michael Horton is J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics at Westminster Seminary California and the president of Sola Media, formerly White Horse Media. Core Christianity, a ministry of Sola Media, produces Christian content and Michael hosts a radio show called Core Radio. Thanks for tuning into this week's podcast! This episode we are continuing in our series, Sabbath Stories: Embracing Rest in a Restless World. Each episode we will unpack the sacred call to rest and renewal, as well as a practical practice to help you integrate rest rhythms into your life. This episode we'll continue to look deeper at the pilgrimage that the Israelites made, and unpack the parts of the journey that reveal something beautiful about our own journey with God. We'll touch on the idea of entering in to rest rather than receiving it, as well as consider the ways that God has intended for rest to be communal, and something we experience and share with others on our journey. Stephanie continues to unpack the concept of contentment in the context of rest, and how it relates to our restless souls. She begins by sharing a heartwarming story about her beloved grandmother's endearing habit of leaving a bit of chocolate on their baguette, calling it the "Chocolate Queen" or, in French, "La Reine en chocolat." It is the little things like this that remind us of the simple joys in life and the importance of celebration. Stephanie then delves into the transformation of our hearts and minds, emphasizing that the shape of our hearts and minds determines our perception and experience of contentment or discontent. Through her personal reflections and biblical insights, she invites us to allow God's transformative power to shape our lives, leading to inner contentment and rest for our souls, even amidst the challenges we face. Stephanie questions why we often strive for achievement before finding rest and contentment. She reminds us that true contentment can be found in Christ's presence, without the need for conquest. The war has already been won! She invites us to examine our own restlessness and discontentment, urging us to find joy in what fits us and see it as enough. She shares practical tips on dealing with restlessness caused by discontent and emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and addressing our pain. Stephanie highlights the deeper spiritual rest that can be found in God's presence, beyond just physical rest. She explores the concept of settling for the wrong "Promised Lands" in our lives and encourages us to identify and prioritize the right places where we can practice for Heaven. GOOD TO KNOW! This is the fifth of 6 episodes on rest. Stephanie initially taught keynotes at several distinct events and, surprisingly, the event organizers asked her to speak on the topic of rest. They didn't know they were all asking for the same theme. Stephanie crafted unique talks for each event, and wondered how this serendipitous convergence on the theme of rest might apply to you, our beloved Podcast audience. So, here are the keynotes she gave on the topic of dwelling in the presence of God, and delighting in His glory, as the essence, goal and means of rest. Experience the peace and presence of Jesus like never before, by walking in His footsteps on this virtual, highly personable tour of first-century Israel! Sign up today at gospelspice.com/footsteps for all the details. DATES | October 5 to November 16, 2023 (registration closes on October 10, so register now!) LOCATION | Online! Life is busy, and full of worry, anxiety, and stress. What if what we needed was a solid reminder of Jesus' very real presence in our lives? What if walking in His footsteps for a few weeks might prove the cure to our endless challenges, so that we may view our life as He does? It's said that a visit to Israel will forever change your experience of Scripture. That statement is right. But more than that, it will forever change your experience of Jesus. Here at Gospel Spice, our goal is to know Jesus more. It means deepening our theology, for sure, but what about discovering the little things Jesus enjoyed? Think of your best friends, or deeply loved ones. You know their favorite color, food, and scent. Not because it's life-changing, but because it is about intimacy, and knowing one another well. So, how about discovering one of Jesus' favorite childhood smells, or the Galilee skyline He woke up to every morning? It may not alter your theology, but it will help you know Him more. Do you need a full measure of His peace and comfort? Do you need to be reminded of His love for you? Do you need His guidance to navigate your life right now? Stephanie just returned from the Holy Land and invites you to walk in the footsteps of Jesus on this virtual tour of first-century Israel from the comfort of your own home. We will be journeying through Scripture together to meet Jesus where He walked, taught, and fellowshipped with His friends in Galilee. We will encounter Him on the Passion walk, from the Upper Room to Golgotha. We will meet Him in the Garden Tomb. So, pack your virtual sandals, along with a very real Bible and pen, to journey through Scripture in the footsteps of Jesus! Sign up today at gospelspice.com/footsteps for all the details. Welcome to the Wildgoose Festival 2023, "Ignite"!One of my favorite parts of Wildgoose is the opportunity to connect with new and old friends, to be reminded of the importance of supportive relationships and to carry these connections home - long after the festival has wrapped up. Our first interview is with a new friend - Kate is the author of three books. Her newest book “Reclaiming Rest: The Promise of Sabbath, Solitude, and Stillness in a Restless World" is available now from all booksellers. In addition to her role as a writer, Kate is a consultant focused in international public health. She also is the leader of, Writing for your Life, a resource center for spiritual writers. This episode's prose piece comes from "The Celtic Daily Prayer - Book 1" adapted to gender inclusive language. It reads:“Their eyes, far-seeing, scan the horizon, the joys venturing of little boats. A torch burns clearly in their grasp, a faithful challenge to this generation -meeting, listening, heart-connecting. In their shadow is a place I covet, a challenge in a present time…While I live may I be the shadow of a Rock in a weary land, a shelter from the heat…"Questions for discussion:1. What does rest mean to you?2. Do you have a regular rest ritual or sabbath practice?3. What is it?4. Why did you choose this as your sabbath/rest practice/ritual?5. If you don't currently have a rest practice, how might you start one - what would i be?6. What are the most needed or important effects you need to gain from a rest practice?Gratitude to Wildgoose Festival for HSP being part of the 2023 Podcast Team. Longtime friend Andy Crouch joins Curtis to talk about what it means to truly rest the way God intended us to do so. Why is rest so important to creativity?
