On the 20th July 1944, a bomb hidden in a briefcase exploded under a large table over which Adolf Hitler was examining maps of the Eastern Front. The man who had planted the device, Claus von Stauffenberg, had left just before the explosion to initiate the operation that he hoped would lead to the overthrow of the Nazi regime. The plan failed, and Hitler would survive for another 9 months before his suicide on 30th April 1945. Was this the closest Hitler came to death? What about the November 8, 1939 when Georg Elser so very nearly succeeded where Stauffenberg would fail more than four years later. And what about Allied attempts - Operation Foxley by the British, and then the very strange idea from the American OSS? Roger covers all these in the first part of our series on the 80th anniversary of the July plot. Part Two continues on Saturday with Valkyrie, the 2008 film starring Tom Cruise. Between 1940 and 1943, Polish diplomats based in Bern, Switzerland, engaged in a remarkable – and until now, almost completely untold – humanitarian operation. This operation, which has only recently come to light, was one of the largest actions to aid Jews of the entire war. In concert with two Jewish activists, these diplomats masterminded a systematic program of forging documents for Latin American countries that were smuggled into occupied Europe, in an attempt to save the lives of thousands of Jews facing extermination in the Holocaust. Today, I speak with renowned WW2 historian Roger Morehouse. Roger is the author of the books Killing Hitler, Berlin at War: Life and Death in Hitler's Capital, 1939-45, and The Devils' Alliance: Hitler's Pact with Stalin, 1939-1941. Here, we discuss his new book The Forgers which chronicles the work of the diplomats in a little known story about WW2.Remember to subscribe, rate, and review Eyewitness History.Follow the Show on Social Media!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EyewitnessHistoryTwitter: https://twitter.com/EyewitnessPodThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5351305/advertisement

It's 1940 and there's a serial killer on the streets of Berlin looking for his next victim. Elfreda Franka is travelling home on the late train after work. Sitting alone in the dark carriage she stares out of the window as the train pulls into a station. Another passenger gets onboard. Curious but unable to make out their features, Elfrieda continues to stare out into the pitch black as the train departs. The stranger quietly approaches Elfrieda and before she can sense danger, she feels a cold, hard and heavy object strike her. She was not the first and wouldn't be the last victim of the S-Bahn murderer. This is a true story about the crimes of a mass murderer, who assaulted and fatally attacked women on a killing spree that lasted nine months. In this episode we follow the work the Criminal Politici and their lead investigator Police Commissioner Wilhelm Ludtke, as he and his team of detectives worked tirelessly to track down this illusive killer. However, as the body count mounted the detectives not only had to track down this violent phantom but had to do so against the ever-growing interferences and limitations of Nazi High Command. This is the story of a hunt for truth in a political landscape where the “truth” was whatever Hitler deemed it to be. Despite a thorough investigation, how did the killer avert the police for so long? Why did Nazi High command want to keep it a secret? And how did they finally catch the illusive killer? Cast List: David Thomas The Author of historical crime thrillers such as “Ostland” and an award-winning journalist, with twenty-five years of experience working for Fleet Street newspapers. It's the morning of September 18th, 1931, and through the walls of their apartment in Munich, Germany, a man and woman can be heard arguing. The man is Adolf Hitler, who would go on to lead as German Chancellor and be one of the world's most infamous dictators who committed heinous crimes against humanity. The woman, his 23-year-old niece, Geli Raubal. Within hours of the argument, Geli was dead from a gunshot wound to the chest. The gun was Hitler's. The official verdict ruled her death a suicide, but with rumours of an inappropriate relationship with her uncle did Geli Raubal kill herself or was it a Nazi murder cover-up? In this episode we look at Geli Raubal's life and death under closer examination, to see how conclusions drawn in the case are now being questioned as to their accuracy. Does the evidence suggest she was involved in a violent altercation before her fatal shooting? Is the angle of the gunshot wound unusual for a suicide attempt? Do multiple witness statements contradict Hitler's testimony? These events and the secrecy surrounding the investigation have caused many to question the official verdict with suggestions of incest, murder, and a cover up within the Nazi Party just before they seized power. So, what is the truth? Was this suicide or murder? And how did this case affect the Nazi Party's rise to power? Cast List: Gerhard Fuermetz A German historian and researcher from Augsburg University. Dr Linda Papadopoulos The Reader in Psychology at London Metropolitan University, with a 17-year career working as a research scientist and practicing psychologist. Nigel Jones A historian, journalist and former deputy editor of History Today magazine and former reviews editor of BBC History Magazine. They may even have helped Adolf Hitler to reach power in 1933, but at the very top of the German hierachy some brave insurgents had begun, by 1936, to recognise the danger he posed. They began to plot against him, first by hindering his war effort, and then by attempting to kill him - up to 10 plots to assassinate Hitler were mounted during his leadership. Paddy Ashdown, who lead the Liberal Democrats for over a decade, was a member of the Special Boat Service and a Royal Marine, wrote a book about the assassination attempts on Hitler. He spoke to Dan about the people behind these plots and their outcomes. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
"In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy and peace," declares smuggler Harry Lime in Carol Reed's noir thriller 'The Third Man'. "And what did they produce? The cuckoo clock." Lime is wrong, incidentally--the cuckoo clock originated in Southern Germany--but it's fair to say he never envisioned a cuckoo clock that could reverse the flow of time itself. The best use of such a device? Killing Hitler, perhaps? No--getting your bratty sister in trouble! Now there's your thriller. The Cuckoo Clock of Doom is the twenty-eighth book in the original Goosebumps book series. It was first published in 1995.

Roger Moorhouse in conversation with Robert Gerwarth. For nearly two years the two most infamous dictators in history actively collaborated with one another. The Nazi-Soviet Pact stunned the world. WWII was launched under its auspices and its eventual collapse led to the war’s defining and deciding clash. In The Devils’ Alliance Roger Moorhouse tells the full story for the first time, from the motivation for its inception to its dramatic end in 1941 as Germany declared war against its former parter. Roger Moorhouse is an English historian and the author of three critically-acclaimed books: Killing Hitler; Berlin at War; and most recently The Devils’ Alliance, a fascinating study of the Nazi-Soviet Pact. Robert Gerwarth is Professor of Modern History at UCD and Director of its Centre for War Studies. He is the author of The Bismarck Myth and Hitler’s Hangman: the Life of Heydrich. Recorded at Printworks, Dublin Castle on 24 September 2016.

After a rough childhood and adolescence, which involved losing his father and then mother, living on the streets of Vienna, and serving through World War I, Adolf Hitler joined the Nazi Party and rose to become the undisputed master of that party, and then Germany itself. Hitler’s racist, militaristic Germany started World War II in Europe and devoted itself to wiping out various social and ethnic groups, including Communists and Jews. Although Hitler was wildly popular with certain European groups, he made many enemies, and found himself the target of various assassination plots. On this episode of Inside Jobs, we investigate The Plot to Kill Hitler.
