This obviously could have major implications with how this war plays out and makes everyone ask the question, when is the war going to resume in full scale? Surprisingly, the details of this operation might just answer that question themselves. Justin Hilton discusses all of this and more on today's show. "America was born in a battle, in a fight for freedom. And throughout its history, America has gone to bat for free peoples." Nicky Billou joins Larry Elder again to discuss what President Trump's address on the war in Iran. While the administration should clearly outline that its primary objectives have been achieved, including degrading Iran's nuclear capabilities and weakening its military threat, how the message is delivered is also critical. Relying on statistics or technical details about military achievements won't resonate with the average American. Instead, leaders should frame their message around what lies in the hearts of freedom minded people; their culture, identity, shared history, and what freedom represents. Timing is also critical. If the war appears to be going on too long and the outcome is uncertain, public support will decline. Other topics include potential regime instability, the role of the Iranian people, and the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz. In April 1980, a group of armed men invaded the Iranian Embassy in London, taking hostages, and issuing demands in the name of a cause almost no one had ever heard of.The 'Group of the Martyr', a collection of Iranian Arabs, wanted independence for their province of Iran, but their demands were impossible for the British Government to meet, and so the then-little known Special Air Service (SAS) were told to plan an invasion of the building to rescue the hostages. They had taken 26 people hostage, including staff, visitors and a police officer named Trevor who was guarding the building at the time of the attack. What followed was a six-day siege, that was eventually broken by the SAS.Their storming of the embassy galvanised the world, as people watched it all unfold on live television.Historian and author Ben McIntyre takes a deeper look at this dramatic siege and rescue operation, uncovering the real, powerful story of ordinary people responding as best they could to lethal jeopardy.Further informationThe Siege is published by Penguin Random House. This episode was recorded live at the 2025 Sydney Writers' Festival. It explores Iran, Tehran, terrorism, violence, threats, diplomacy, rescue missions, epic history, western democracy, dictatorship, foreign affairs, global politics, east vs west, occupation, war, civil war, BBC, journalism, live television, media ethics, Afrouz, MI5, Hyde Park, surveillance, Stockholm Syndrome, Mustapha Karkouti, Syria, Operation Nimrod, Jassim Alwan al-Nasiri, Abbas Lavasani, murder, execution, Saddam Hussein, Iraq, Iran-Iraq War, the Middle East, history books, writing.Find out more about the Conversations Live National Tour on the ABC website.

This weekend, according to the NYT - Israel Rescues Four hostages in a hostage in military operation - This is a fact, it's in the active voice and the hostages are numbered. Then “Gaza officials Say Scores are killed.” Which is presented as hearsay, in the passive voice and they victims are not numbered. This is pretty egregious. The role of corporate and partisan media in the United States is not to inform but to manufacture consent for the whims of the ruling and political class. IT's becoming apparent that we are some of the most heavily propagandized people on Earth. The easiest way to see that is to note how many think we're the good guys. I argue that The Hostage Rescue Operation conducted early Saturday morning will have far-reaching unintended consequences.
