This week, the crew discusses reading a manga about reading manga! Oh, how far we've come. We discuss the life of Teppei Sasaki, a mangaka trying to make it in the world of Shonen Jump while trying to get his own story serialized. What kind of challenges does a mangaka have to overcome when publishing a successful story? Just how useful are microwaves? Is crushing a child's dreams worth it when saving a life? Why wont Harbor Freight sponsor the show? Is intellectual property actually property if it's from the future? Should Shonen Jump be boycotted or thanked for taking this story away from us? Open your microwave and grab your headphones to listen to this week's episode of That One Time We Read Manga! I just don't have the time to prioritise my business.I just don't have the time to take my business forward or do lead generation or sales I just don't have the time to make it happen.Does this sound like you? I want you to ask yourself this… Do you really NOT have the time or are you just not taking CONTROL of your time and letting it control you? Today we are discussing what I like to call the ‘Time Paradox'. I get hundreds of messages on my Instagram every single week from people saying, Steph I just don't have time for that. And I hear you, I understand you. But, until you learn to take control of your time, you'll always be in the same position and you'll never have the time or financial freedom you desire. This is going to be a pretty savage episode so apologies in advance, if I offend you please know this is probably because you have some work to do. You'll hear:
Blog post link: https://videogamegrooves.com/2023/06/27/b-side-giovanni-rotondo-8-bit-time-adventures-the-legendary-decks In a special "B-side" interview, we sit down with composer and creative renaissance man Giovanni Rotondo to talk about the third in his latest project to come to vinyl, The 8-bit Time Capsule at Enjoy the Ride Records. This third release of the 8-bit Time Adventures series adds another mashup of video game time and space to the series that already include a Paradox and a Machine. And because it's pretty far out there, we've got to talk about it before we put it on the turntable! Giovanni describes some of his film score work and "speculative" music, shares his own background with video games and modern media storytelling, and explains how that background has fed into his recent video game projects and collaborations with other artists. We also get to hear about another foray into the world of physical musical media and storytelling, The Legendary Decks. We discuss some of the interactivity and programmatic options in the history of vinyl and in the future with projects like The Legendary Decks and what might be possible in the future. The 8-bit Time Capsule (and represses of The 8-bit Time Paradox and The 8-bit Time Machine) are available at Enjoy the Ride Records now. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.02.15.528677v1?rss=1 Authors: Mumford, J. A., Bissett, P. G., Jones, H. M., Shim, S., Rios, J. A. H., Poldrack, R. A. Abstract: The functional MRI (fMRI) signal is a proxy for an unobservable neuronal signal, and differences in fMRI signals on cognitive tasks are generally interpreted as reflecting differences in the intensity of local neuronal activity. However, changes in either intensity or duration of neuronal activity can yield identical differences in fMRI signals. When conditions differ in response times (RTs), it is thus impossible to determine whether condition differences in fMRI signals are due to differences in the intensity of neuronal activity or to potentially spurious differences in the duration of neuronal activity. The most common fMRI analysis approach ignores RTs, making it difficult to interpret condition differences that could be driven by RTs and/or intensity. Because differences in response time are one of the most important signals of interest for cognitive psychology, nearly every task of interest for fMRI exhibits RT differences across conditions of interest. This results in a paradox, wherein the signal of interest for the psychologist is a potential confound for the fMRI researcher. We review this longstanding problem, and demonstrate that the failure to address RTs in the fMRI time series model can also lead to spurious correlations at the group level related to RTs or other variables of interest, potentially impacting the interpretation of brain-behavior correlations. We propose a simple approach that remedies this problem by including RT in the fMRI time series model. This model separates condition differences from RT differences, retaining power for detection of unconfounded condition differences while also allowing the identification of RT-related activation. We conclude by highlighting the need for further theoretical development regarding the interpretation of fMRI signals and their relationship to response times. Copy rights belong to original authors. This week, co-hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto explore a time paradox that came out of The Next Generation and involved a character from The Original Series, our beloved Montgomery Scott. The issue comes from Mr. Scott's appearance in The Next Generation episode Relics, and the movie Generations. It's a bit of a head scratcher why this in-universe paradox happens. Also, it's very curious why writers and producers allowed such a mistake to occur on their watch, especially in light of the fact that the same group worked on both productions and those shows were only separated by two years! We'll try to get to the bottom of it. *** In The Unofficial Trek Podcast, hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto give their "Unofficial" take on the Star Trek universe. From 2019 through 2019, Bob and Kelly hosted the show 70s Trek. It was a look at the events that brought a cancelled, 1960s TV show back from the dead to become a blockbuster movie in 1979. It was a decade that created a multi-million dollar franchise. Now Bob and Kelly will look at the minutia, the concepts, the people and the news pertaining to the Star Trek Universe. It's a fascinating time for Star Trek, with a flood of content about it on the internet. Bob and Kelly will give their "Unofficial" take. Why unofficial? Because their views are just that, they are theirs and are, therefore, "unofficial." It's a fresh look at Star Trek from two lifelong fans who have been talking Trek for over 35 years! We hope you'll join Bob and Kelly for their next venture, The Unofficial Trek Podcast. Logics tells us that time should be either linear, cyclical or circular. Either it begins and ends. Or it repeats itself endlessly. Or it does not begin nor end but is a loop. These 3 states are mutually exclusive. However, our individual experience tells us something different. Our experience tells us that time can be linear and cyclical and circular. Time does begin and end every year, from the first of January to the 31st of December. A measurable unique timeline, i.e., time is linear. Simultaneously, time moves from winter to spring, summer, then fall, and then back into winter again. A chain of events, i.e. cyclical time. On top of this, we also experience time as being circular, as in, the 1st of January follows again after the 31th of December. An endless loop. Logic tells us one thing. Experience another. We happily accept this paradox.
Endurance takes time. But time is not what creates your results. Listen to understand more about the endurance - time paradox and how to make sure "it just takes time" isn't keeping you from stronger performance.

This week's conversation is with Dr. Philip Zimbardo, a professor emeritus in psychology at Stanford University, and creator of The Stanford Prison Experiment.Philip has spent over 50 years teaching psychology - he's an absolute legend in the field. He's written more than 60 books and has over 600 publications (professional and popular articles, and chapters). Among his books are: Psychology and Life textbook, Shyness, The Lucifer Effect, The Time Paradox, The Time Cure, and most recently, Man Interrupted. His current research looks at the Psychology of Heroism, asking: “What forces push some people to become perpetrators of evil, while others act heroically on behalf of people in need.” As founder and president of the nonprofit foundation, Heroic Imagination Project (HIP), he does trainings globally in schools, institutions, and businesses. It would be impossible to cover all his work over the course of an hour conversation, but we discuss what gave him the idea to conduct The Stanford Prison Experiment and how that shaped some his future work which includes studying topics like: shyness, the conception of time, and heroism.----Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support. Lianne Keemink (The Self Help Hipster) and Andrew Chin discuss self-help books, talk about their obsessions and their pop culture pleasures. Book of the Month Andrew and I received the book by Philip Zimbardo & John Boyd, the Time Paradox! I had a copy of a friend, but the Kindle version is 16$ on Amazon. ----more---- Philip Zimbardo is a huge name in (pop) psychology, he's best known for the Stanford Prison Experiment, and the book reads like a big parade of the biggest things that happened in psychology, somehow related to...time. It's an interesting read on human perspective on time, and it's not a very practical self-help book but inspiring you to take a look at your own attitudes towards time. You can take the surveys to check out your own attitudes on time here! "Your attitudes on time have a profound impact on your life and your world." "Whether you look for happiness in the past, present or the future, you experience happiness in the present." I mention the article I wrote about taking the long term approach where I also mention the Marshmallow experiment that's also mentioned in the book. Pop Culture Pleasures Lianne: Wine Country on Netflix (read my Dutch review on that movie here!) Lianne: Godzilla, King of the Monsters.OBSESSED. Saw it twice. Lianne: Good Omens, it's on Amazon Prime and stars David Tennant & Michael Sheen in the TV recreation of Pratchett's & Gaiman's awesome book, Good Omens. Lianne (I had a lot to share this week): The Loch. It's terrible (especially in terms of how Steve Alten writes about women) but I like it for what it is -- suspense ridden monster stuff. I love it even more when I found out the movie The Meg is based on one of his books either. Lianne & Andrew: GAME OF THRONES. Obsessions My new pair of pants. (Lianne) Essays on Game of Thrones and how it ended. (Andrew) Next book Atomic Habits by James Clear!
