From SBS Special Forces to World Record Holder: Dean Stott's remarkable journey embodies the relentless pursuit of excellence. A 16-year military veteran who served in the UK's elite Special Boat Service, Dean's path took an unexpected turn when a 2011 injury led him into high-stakes private security. His expertise became indispensable to world leaders, including a legendary solo evacuation of the Canadian Embassy in Libya in 2014. Dean wasn't finished pushing the boundaries. In 2016, he embarked on an extraordinary challenge: cycling the entire 14,000-mile Pan-American Highway. Not only did he complete this gruelling journey, but he also shattered two world records in the process, finishing in just 99 days. This is the first episode of a two-part mini-series on the history of maritime special forces. In this episode we hear about the Second World War origins, development and early history of the SBS - the 'Special Boat Service'. To find out more Dr Sam Willis spoke with Saul David, a military historian given unprecedented access to the archives of the SBS for his book - SBS - Silent Warriors: The Authorised Wartime History. Founded in the dark days of 1940, Britain's Special Boat Service was the world's first maritime special operations unit. It started as an inexperienced and small outfit that leaned heavily on the courage and enthusiasm of volunteers but went on to change the course of the war. Its operational inventiveness has served as a model for special forces ever since. Their assignments were some of the most challenging of the war. Feted by history they have gone on to become legendary military operations. The SBS operated globally: in the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, the Channel and the Far East. Operating with flimsy canoes and armed with close-combat weapons - often nothing more than knives, pistols and their bare hands - these men operated repeatedly and successfully deep behind enemy lines. They landed secret agents, destroyed enemy infrastructure, attacked enemy shipping, spread uncertainty and fear and paved the way of some of the most important large-scale operations of the war, including D-Day. DEAN STOTT Former Special Boat Service (SBS) Operator DOUBLE WORLD RECORD HOLDER, AUTHOR “You can argue with someone ‘til you're blue in the face. Or you can just go do it and prove them wrong." “You can argue with someone ‘til you're blue in the face. Or you can just go do it and prove them wrong. It is my pleasure to introduce to you Dean Stott - Former UK Special Forces (SBS), Adventurer, Double World Record Holder, Star of the TV show SAS Australia and Author of the Bestselling book, Relentless.

We talked about the support of his wife Alana, his team behind his successes and the transition from Special Forces soldier to the civilian world. Dean talked about how he met Prince Harry, and the support he got for the world record attempt to raise money for the charity Heads Together. With the most exciting start to ANY book I have ever read or heard his book Relentless is a phenomenal read. Dean epitomises the unrelenting pursuit of excellence and in. His words- “you cannot be experienced without experience “
Everybody has heard the SAS motto that who dares wins, but special forces warrior Dean Stott also lives his life by another powerful mantra - that of the relentless pursuit of excellence. In 16 years of service, Dean rose to the top of Britain's fighting force, taking part of some of the most daring and dangerous operations in the war on terror, and then in the private security force, where missions included him singlehandedly evacuating the Canadian Embassy in Libya. But then, following a horrific parachuting accident, Dean's dream career was cut short, and his ethos was put to its toughest test. Just like the day when Dean's dad said that he could never make it as a soldier, Dean's doctors told him that he would never again perform at the elite level. To put it mildly, Dean disagreed, but even those that knew him were staggered by the mission that he set himself - the man who didn't own a bike would cycle the Pan American Highway, a 14,000 mile route on the longest road in the world- that stretches from Argentina to Alaska, passing through some of the most dangerous countries on earth. A passionate mental health campaigner, Dean decided to up the stakes further by setting himself the task of raising a million pounds for charity. With two world records also in his sights, the stage was set for Dean to rediscover the tenacity, bravery, and downright doggedness that saw him rise to the top of the Special Forces. The final curveball arrived in the shape of a wedding invitation from his old friend Prince Harry - would he make it back in time for the royal wedding, or at all? Dean Stott is Relentless, and this is his story.

The HSM Sheffield has just been sunk by an Exocet days after the General Belgrano was sent to the depths by two torpedoes. This war was turning nastier by the minute and not helped by the media on both sides – British Warship sunk by Argies – yelled the Sun Headline The Daily Star was a bit more direct – its headline was merely:SUNK!The odd thing was that the Sheffield had not actually gone down by the time these stories were published  –  it would take three days for the Sheffield to eventually roll over but there was no denying the palpable shock which ran through the British nation on the morning of the 5th May 1982 the day after the crew abandoned ship. The mood in the war cabinet that day reflected these views, with John Nott the most shaken of Margaret Thatchers' ministers. He told the House of commons later “It has been a dreadful event…” but the first effect was to infuse the British diplomatic efforts with new energy and foreign secretary Francis Pym was on the move once more. Just a few days earlier he had been waving his arms about airily dismissing the peace initiatives in a condescending manner, now he was shocked into action. Meanwhile, since the beginning of May, the SAS and Special Boat Service had not been idle. Parties from G squadron SAS and the SBS began landing ashore on the Falklands from the 1st May to assess the strength and condition of the Argentinian forces. Rear Admiral Woodward had ordered the frigate HMS Alacrity to steam at full speed through the Falkland Sound – the passage between East and West Falklands. The plan was to pressurise the Argentine garrison and to prove that the British had naval superiority. What Woodward didn't know, was that there were five Argentine supply ships in various parts of the Falkland Sound that night.  Get bonus content on Patreon Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Greg Barden was the youngest to ever pass Special Forces Selection and his journey from the Special Boat Service to England Sevens and company founder is as inspirational as it is interesting. This was the first time we met each other since we parted ways badly with England Sevens, me as the coach and Greg as the captain. It really was great to see Greg again and something we should have done a long time ago. He has not only done some truly amazing things in his life so far, but he also talks about them so brilliantly and reflects deeply and with real insight. Certainly, it was very cathartic to talk about how we fell out but it also left me with some mixed emotions. I was genuinely elated to have had that difficult conversation but also disappointed in myself that I had been like that with him all those years ago and not had the tools to mend it quickly. I put those softer skills right at the top of what I think I am very good at but the ego, twinned with the pressure I had put on myself back then, produced a Ben Ryan that was certainly not his best version! I think those dips in my best version were pretty rare but still, as I say to a lot of the coaches and players I have worked with, you can be 99% brilliant in how you deal with someone but one badly placed comment, just as in this case, can destroy all the good work you have built up. It will be a fantastic next chapter for Greg and Pixie. He spoke so deeply about community and working together. Go to Pixieapp.co to find out more about all he’s up to in his business life and the show notes will provide lots more detail and relevant links to anything Greg and I signposted or referenced. Dean Stott is an esteemed British Special Forces veteran, with 16 years of honorable service in conflict zones and leading rescue operations. Known as ‘The Frogman’, he is a sought-after international speaker, security director, philanthropist, professional adventurer and author. Dean travels the world giving lectures to a range of audiences, from business executives to students, and doctors to athletes. He uses his past experiences as a soldier to help others develop the strong mindsets needed to face adversity and overcome any challenges. When his career in the Special Boat Service was cut short by a serious knee injury sustained in a parachuting accident, medical experts advised him that he would not be able to continue to push the limits of his physical boundaries. In spite of this prognosis, Dean built a successful career as a Global Security Director for Stott Consultancy, which he founded with his wife, Alana. He is called upon for personal and corporate assignments, providing security solutions for a range of clients, including UHNW individuals, political leaders, governments and royal families. Dean is involved in many charitable endeavors. In 2018, he embarked on the Pan American Highway Challenge, cycling the world's longest road at 14,000 miles. Ultimately, Dean helped raise $1.2 million for the Heads Together campaign and 11 mental health charities. This endeavor also led to some impressive personal accolades: two Guinness World Records. He completed the challenge in a record time of 99 days, 12 hours and 56 minutes, becoming the first man in history to cycle the Pan American Highway in under 100 days. Dean is also an ambassador for the Special Boat Service Association, UK Emergency Services Giving and The Royal British Legion. His 2019 book, Relentless, takes the reader on a journey sharing the experience of his army training, the clandestine special forces operations, his parachuting accident and record-breaking biking achievement.

They may even have helped Adolf Hitler to reach power in 1933, but at the very top of the German hierachy some brave insurgents had begun, by 1936, to recognise the danger he posed. They began to plot against him, first by hindering his war effort, and then by attempting to kill him - up to 10 plots to assassinate Hitler were mounted during his leadership. Paddy Ashdown, who lead the Liberal Democrats for over a decade, was a member of the Special Boat Service and a Royal Marine, wrote a book about the assassination attempts on Hitler. He spoke to Dan about the people behind these plots and their outcomes. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The second part - Strength and Guile looks at the lessons learned from his 20 years as an operator and royal marines commando and inferred learning to the reader. Concepts we explore include: The concept of graded exposure to training. The sense of community and brotherhood from war. Jason's struggles with PTSD and the emotional combat indicators that signify it. The ‘cigar moment’ and how it calms the central nervous system down. Awareness of your own vulnerabilities and how it can help protect you. The preferential mode of de-escalation over aggression (grey man, passive use of the weapon). High performing teams ability to self regulate rather than externally regulate. Reframing negative events and what it can teach us about resilience. The power of debrief also known as Sensitive Site Exploitation/SSE. The concept that there is a flattened hierarchy and everyone can contribute a game changing piece of information. Although anyone can teach martial arts, in order to teach a practical self-defence system like Krav Maga it helps to have some first-hand knowledge in dealing with ‘extreme’ violence. For 20 years Jon ensured this was the case. After a six-year service in the Royal Marines, serving in an operational commando unit, he then spent two years “on the door” as a bouncer. For 15 years he worked with young offenders in various secure units, experiencing a daily exposure to violence. As well as teaching a regular class, he also teaches Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu at the Metropolitan Specialist Training Centre. He currently features in the channel 4 program - SAS: Who Dares Wins. We look at the similarities between the Special Forces (SF) and critical care (paramedic) practice. We examine the principles of high performing teams, relationship with failure, and communication amongst other aspects. We also look at self care and what it means on a practical level and the power of not taking yourself too seriously. I have always found Jason to be honest and open person which is why having conversations with him is so refreshingly real. This episode will feature on the Restore Podcast (Self-Care non-clinical) and the Pre-hospital Care Podcast (Clinical Conversations) as it relates to both. I hope you enjoy this episode.

Matthew 'Ollie' Ollerton is a former Special Forces soldier and a member of the Directing Staff on Channel 4's hit show SAS: Who Dares Wins. Ollie's military career began at the age of 18 when he joined the Royal Marine Commandos and toured operationally in Northern Ireland and in Iraq for Operation Desert Storm. He subsequently spent six years in the Special Boat Service rising to team leader, before working in Iraq as a private security contractor and carrying out charity work in South-East Asia. Ex-Special Forces soldier Ollie Ollerton knows more than his fair share about keeping going. As a recruit he survived the infamously tough SAS selection process on a busted ankle with the Directing Staff pleading with him to give up. But it's in Ollie's personal life that he really had to dig deep. At his lowest he was battling a failed relationship, substance abuse, depression and a pronounced death wish. After leaving the services Ollie found himself at a loss. Feeling worthless, lacking purpose, he turned to drink to numb the pain. Looking for a way out, Ollie made a discovery. Often in life we find ourselves looking for an external fix - drink, drugs, other people's agenda. But the truth is the solution is not out there, it's inside. In Battle Ready Ollie teaches you how to access this potential, find your inner strength and transform your life. From finding your purpose to visualising your outcome, to putting in a process to break bad habits and create positive new routines, Ollie's 12-step plan shows you how to make positive progress and recover when things go wrong. By following his plan, you can realise your full potential, find your happiness, and become battle ready. ‘Special Forces soldiers aren’t supermen. We’re just ordinary people, with the same frailties and vulnerabilities as everyone else. But ordinary people can achieve the extraordinary.’ Ollie Ollerton Instagram: @FreedomPact FreedomPact.co.uk

After more than two months alone at sea, Tim Crockett finished his 3,200-mile solo row across the Atlantic Ocean last Wednesday by making landfall in Antigua in the Caribbean. Starting from the island of La Gomera off Africa’s northwestern coast on Dec. 12, Wednesday’s completion put his trek time at 63 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes. A 48-year-old Royal Marine veteran, husband and father of two, Crockett had been one of only five solo rowers in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, an annual race across the Atlantic. Other participants in the challenge rowed in groups of two, three or four. Crockett placed second out of the solo teams, beaten only by 18-year old Lukas Haitzmann, who completed the event in 59 days, 8 hours and 22 minutes. Over the course of his excursion, Crockett celebrated Christmas and his birthday in his boat “Tame the Kraken,” a 24-foot, specially designed ocean rowboat specially designed to right itself if it capsizes in stormy weather. In a video posted Wednesday morning on the “Tame the Kraken” Facebook page, Crockett had told followers he was just under 12 miles away from harbor. “I may look like an Arctic explorer, but I’ve just been hit by some pretty nasty squalls,” Crockett said. “Hopefully we’re through the worst of that, we’ll get through these few final miles and it will be a fantastic welcome into Antigua.”   The trek was Crockett’s effort to raise money for U.S. and British veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder. He served 12 years in the Royal Marines, seeing action in the first Iraq war and doing drug interdiction work in the seas as a member of the United Kingdom’s Special Boat Service. The motivation for his journey, he previously told the MDJ, came when an old military buddy committed suicide. Crockett had initially set a goal of completing his trek in 50 days or less, but complicating the effort early on was an injury — he tweaked his knee on the second night of the marathon. Other roadblocks on the sea included mechanical and equipment failure, sunburns and extreme heat. Check out my interview with Tim from this past June and make sure you get over to his website and donate some money.

PAUL DE GELDER: IMPROVISE. ADAPT. OVERCOME. These three words – A mantra Paul learnt in the Australian Army as a young Paratrooper – resonated with him the first time he heard them. Paul chased adventure wherever he could find it, from his wild ride as a hoodlum teen and his drug-and-alcohol fuelled stint working in a strip club to hauling his way up to the elite echelons of the defence forces as an Army Paratrooper and then Navy Clearance Diver. But trouble hunted him down in the form of a brutal shark in February 2009. Paul lost two limbs, and his career as a daredevil Diver was flung into jeopardy. Drawing on everything his eventful life had taught him, Paul left nothing to chance in his recovery. He fought through excruciating pain, smashing challenge after challenge, and amazing the medical staff with his will to succeed. His inspiring story takes ‘never say die' to a whole new level. In the seven years since the shark attack, Paul's life has changed in every aspect. JAMES GLANCY: James is a passionate wildlife conservationist and keen adventure sportsman. James has spent his life outdoors in wild and hostile places. As a child, James was taught to dive and swim with sharks by a former US Navy Seal who inspired him to join the British military. Over a 10 year military career, James was an Officer in the elite British Royal Marines and Special Boat Service. He deployed on multiple tours around the world, including three combat tours of Afghanistan.

GRP 75- Chantel Taylor and I begin this week's podcast by discussing some of the recent events taking place in the past week to include the U.S. dropping the largest nonnuclear bomb in its arsenal the MOAB, we also touched on some of the rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula and some other topics. Our special guest for this week's podcast is former British Special Forces Operator Jason Carl Fox. "Foxy" spent 20 years as a Royal Marine with the last 10 serving as a Special Boat Service commando. Foxy and I met up here in NYC and had an in-person interview. We discussed his background and career in the Royal Marines as well as his personal struggles with PTSD, and separation from the military. He's been very active lately working on television in the U.K. as well as anchoring programs to help veterans transition and teaching mindset and team building. Below is an excerpt: Foxy: I did multiple deployments predominately to Afghanistan. Everything from counter-narcotics to going after the big hitters on the opposite side. I was also involved in a high-profile hostage rescue operation. That was my last tour of Afghanistan and it was a defining few months for me. Within two days of the beginning of our tour, we went on this hostage rescue. The guy was a New York Times reporter. We were getting shot at in the sky while flying in for a good six minutes. You could see the Chinook behind us getting shot at. You could see air burst RPG's going off. I remember sitting there with a friend of mine and me I thought I was holding my knee and hurting it, but I was holding his and he was holding mine (laughs). We were willing the helicopter to land so we can gain some control over our destiny. We landed and ran off the back and into a crazy firefight. I was a senior guy by this time with multiple tours. I ran about 50 meters and dived into a ditch. The emotion must have been a split second. I remember thinking I wanted to be back at home. I reflected on that moment a lot. What did it mean? We were successful that night but lost a teammate.
