The Pharisees were quick to find fault and criticize Jesus and His disciples as they minister to both the physical and spiritual needs of the people. First, they couldn't believe that Jesus and His disciples would hang out with sinners. Next, they questioned their spirituality because instead of fasting like John's disciples, they were feasting. Now in Luke 6, they are accusing Jesus and His disciples for breaking their man-made Sabbath Day laws on two occasions.   On this first occasion, their criticism had to do with the disciples “plucking heads of grain and eating them after they had rubbed them in their hands.” In the field (vv. 1-5). It was lawful for a Jew to eat from a neighbor's vineyard, orchard, or field, provided he did not fill a container or use a harvesting implement (Deut. 23:24-25). The disciples were hungry, so they picked the heads of wheat, rubbed them in their hands, and ate them. But in so doing, according to the rabbis, they broke the Sabbath law, because they were harvesting, winnowing, and preparing food!   Always alert for something to criticize, some of the Pharisees asked Jesus why He permitted His disciples to violate the Sabbath laws. This was His second offense, and they were sure they had a case against Him. How tragic that their slavish devotion to religious rules blinded them to the true ministry of the Law as well as the very presence of the Lord who gave them the Law.   The accusation of the Pharisees had no support from Scripture. The Scriptures did not prohibit this eating of grain on the Sabbath. The support came only from the man-made rules of the religious leaders, not the law of Moses. The religious leaders had made a host of rules, which were not in Scripture either by principle or precept; but they liked these rules for these religious rulers made their piety based on outward conduct rather than the condition of the heart. Not focusing on the heart, their rules emphasized the trivial and neglected the important. Jesus addressed this specifically in Matthew 23:24.   Jesus did not argue with them; instead, He took them right to the Word of God (1 Sam. 21:1-6). The "showbread" was comprised of twelve loaves, one for each tribe in Israel; and it stood on the table in the holy place in the tabernacle and then in the temple (Ex. 25:23-30; Lev. 24:5-9). Fresh bread was put on the table each Sabbath, and only the priests were allowed to eat the loaves.   But David and his men ate the loaves, and what Jew would condemn Israel's great king? "He was God's anointed!" they might argue, but that was exactly what Jesus claimed for Himself (Luke 4:18). Not only was He God's Anointed, but He was also the Lord of the Sabbath! When Jesus made that statement, He was claiming to be Jehovah God, because it was the Lord who established the Sabbath. If Jesus Christ is indeed Lord of the Sabbath, then He is free to do on it and with it whatever He pleases. The Pharisees did not miss His meaning, you can be sure.   God is more concerned about meeting human needs than He is about protecting religious rules. Better that David and his men receive strength to serve God than that they perish only for the sake of a temporary law. God desires compassion, not sacrifice (Matt. 12:7, quoting Hosea 6:6). The Pharisees, of course, had a different view of the Law (Matt. 23:23).   The Apostle Paul would later write in 2 Corinthians 3:6, that “as a minister of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” This reminds us that God is more concerned about us keeping the Spirit of the Word with to please the Lord from our hearts and not the rules and regulation to outwardly make ourselves look spiritual before others!   May the Lord help us not to become like the Pharisees, outwardly religious but inwardly full of corruption!   God bless!

What Is Meant By “The Law”? God's righteousness is universal, written on the hearts of men (Romans 2:12-16), predating the Law of Moses (Romans 1:18ff), reflected in the Law of Mosses (Romans 2:17ff), and still unchanging. God's righteousness remains, no matter what.Law (Pentateuch)=First five books of the Old Testament, including commands given in Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy.Law (Old Testament)=At times, the whole of the OT is referred to as "The Law" (Matt. 22:36; Luke 10:26; John 7:49; 10:34; 12:34; 15:25; 1 Cor. 9:8–9; 14:21, 34; Gal. 4:21) or "The Law and the Prophets" (Matt. 5:17; 7:12; 22:40; Luke 16:16; 24:44; John 1:45; Acts 13:15; 24:14; 28:23; Rom. 3:21; cf. Matt. 11:13)Law (Commands of God)=At times, Paul refers to the Law in reference to God's commands themselves (Rom. 3:21; 9:31; 10:4; Gal. 2:21; 3:11; 5:4; Phil. 3:6, 9, Eph. 2:15)What is the Purpose of the Law?Mirror: The Law shows us we are sinful because we can't keep it, even when we try (Rom. 3:20; 4:15; 5:13; 7:7-11), and it drives us to seek forgiveness in Christ (Gal. 3:19-24).Restraint: Applied to the civil sphere, the Law is used to restrain sin with the consequence of punishment (Deut. 13:6-11; 19:16-21; Rom. 13:3, 4).Guide: God has prepared good works for believers (Eph. 2:10), and we are commanded to obey God's commands (Matt. 28:20) which shows our love for Him (John 14:15). We are free from the Law as a means of salvation (Rom. 6:14; 7:4, 6; 1 Cor. 9:20; Gal. 2:15-19, 3:25), but we are "under the law of Christ" as a rule for living (1 Cor. 9:21; Gal. 6:2).Errors Related to the Law:Antinomianism: Shunning obedience to all of the OT Law, including the moral aspects of the Law.Judaizers: Those who believed that gentile Christians must become Jews to be saved (circumcision, dietary laws, ceremonial laws, etc.)Hebrew Roots: Belief that Greek and other pagan influences have dominated Christianity. Adherents (generally) believe that Christians must follow (all of) the OT Law and (generally) rabbinic tradition.Seventh Day Adventist: Cultic group that follows the teaching of a false prophet Ellen White. They deny essential doctrines and focus on obeying certain ceremonial traditions such as Saturday worship.

The river Jordan divided

Several Bible stories involve the Jordan River. God often called his followers to cross the Jordan as part of his divine plan. The Israelites feared the people of Canaan. As punishment for their lack of faith, God did not allow any Israelite over twenty years old to enter the Promised Land;including Moses. The Israelites wandered for forty years, and despite begging God to allow him to enter, Moses only viewed the Promised Land from a distance.Joshua 3:14-1714 So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them. 15 Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water's edge, 16 the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho. 17 The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground. The Ark of the CovenantThere is a religious object that is very significant to understanding this passage and that is the ark of the covenant. I believe the ark is mentioned ten times in these seventeen verses. (Joshua 3:3,6,8,11,13,14,15,17)The ark of the covenant is leading the way into the Promised Land. The ark of the covenant stops the flow of the Jordan River from sweeping away the people of God.The ark of the covenant, given the things we just have said, is symbolic of Christ Jesus. Inside of the ark is the scroll of the law. Over the law of God is the mercy seat of God upon which the high priest on the day of atonement would sprinkle blood to atone for the sins and the people. And provide the people access to God.Christ is God with us. Christ is holy God with us. Christ leads us out of slavery. Christ leads us across the Jordan River. Christ prevents the waters of death sweeping us away from Him. Christ brings us into the Promised Land, where He is now waiting for us.Centuries later, the true Ark of God would come among us, the living Immanuel. The Ark contained the Ten Commandments; Jesus fulfilled the Law (Matt.5:17)God is with them. The people of God enter the Jordan River. Christ is with them. They face all their fears with Christ. They face the fear-of-fears, even death, with Christ.Psalm 114:3-7 records it: The sea looked and fled; the Jordan turned back. The mountains skipped like rams, the hills, like lambs. Why was it, sea, that you fled? Jordan, that you turned back? Mountains, that you skipped like rams? Hills, like lambs? (Here's the answer) Tremble, earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob. We need to "Cross our Jordan"Before the crossing Joshua told the people, "Consecrate yourselves, because the Lord will do wonders among you tomorrow."The Hebrew word for consecrate means "to prepare, to dedicate, to be hallowed, to be holy, to be separate or set apart."Two things we must doPersonal repentance of every known sinPutting ourselves on spiritual alert to see God at workTo cross the uncrossable we must 1) Fix our gaze on Jesus--sensing His movements and follow; and 2) Set ourselves apart from sin unto Him, being on constant alert spiritually for the hand of the Lord around us.We must be ready to move when He does His work, always being mindful that if anything is going to last, it's from the Lord. For additional notes and resources check out Douglas' website."For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:20). Jesus' words would probably have been shocking to many, as the Pharisees were quite respected. The Sadducees, and the priestly class (many of whom were Sadducees) on the other hand, were more resented by the common people. Not all Pharisees were bad people—consider Nicodemus (John 3:1ff.) Overall they were greatly respected among those who loved Scripture. They strove for religious revival, where every home became a sort of "temple," where God was honored. Holiness was not just for priests (many of whom were Sadducees), but for all people. Thus it is not surprising that the Pharisees believed they were the ones properly fulfilling the Law. Jesus disagrees. There are three faults Jesus identifies in his teaching.HypocrisyMany of Pharisees only played at holiness.Pretense, pomp characterized their prayer on street corners (Matt 6:5), which was more for public approbation than to honor God.They tended to look down on others who did not maintain the same set of roles—whether biblical, like giving a tithe during OT times, or nonbiblical, like fasting twice a week (Luke 18:9-14).Manmade lawsThey claimed Moses received two sets of law on the mountain: the Torah itself (Exodus 20-Deut 33) plus the oral Torah (their traditions). The Mishnah (c.200 AD) put the regulations of the oral Torah into written form. They tried to build a "fence" around the Law, so that no one would even come close to violating it. Yet they ended up taking their guidelines far too seriously—as though they had the same status as scriptural commands / prohibitions.Discussions about what was legal—e.g. what constituted "work":Sabbath violations: Wearing prosthetic limbs? Shoes repaired with nails? Spitting (which disturbs the dust on the ground and might constitute "plowing")? Swatting a fly ("hunting")?Women looking into mirrors (she might see a gray hair and pluck it out)? Writing in invisible ink?Other laws, like their tradition of Qorban (Matt 15:1-9), which undermined the very purpose of honoring parents (5th commandment).External religionThe scribes and Pharisees were meticulous in obeying the outward commandments of the Law (Matt 23:23).However, Jesus teaches us that we must not only control our outward actions, but our inward ones as well. The Law forbids murder and adultery; Jesus forbids anger and list. Jesus enables people to change from the inside out.In our day, such change will not be accomplished by a “Christian legalism”!Teaching we must exceed the 10% offering (old covenant)—giving at least 11%, since we are under the new covenant. Or that we should fast at least 3x/week, since the Pharisees fasted 2x/week (Luke 18:12).Telling people how many minutes to pray, how many people to evangelize, etc. It's not about quantity, but quality.ConclusionJesus is saying, in effect, that the religious system as a whole is misguided. We will never accept his radical teachings (Matt 5:21-7:27) if our hearts are misaligned with God's will.

It is unfortunate that so many who come to Christ for salvation are misled by false teaching that claims that the Mosaic Law and the words of the Old Testament Prophets are worthless to the Christian. This false teaching leads to a heresy that teaches that the Christian is free from the obligations of obeying God's Law. Jesus addresses this false understanding of God's Word and the Gospel. In this section of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus makes it clear that His message is not one of Antinomianism (anti-law) but instead is a proclamation that the Law and the Prophets were right and that He (Jesus) fulfills all that was taught and prophesied in the Old Testament. The teaching of false prophets argue that the Christian is no longer obligated by legalism or standards of morality. But instead, Jesus clearly calls all who are citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven to obey God's Law as a matter of willing desire instead of overburdened obligation.

Anchor of Truth

Episode 111 How should Christians use the Law of Moses today? How should Christians use the Law of Moses? This seems to be a major issue in our time. The law was given to Israel through Moses and takes a large place in the Old Testament. But most of us are not of Israel, so how should we use the Law? In our last program we introduced this subject but today we want to go farther. Most of us are very familiar with the teaching that the law came through Moses, but grace through Jesus Christ. But what does that mean to us in practical terms? Do we just completely discount the Law of Moses? What meaning does it have to us? How should we use the law in our personal lives, with our family, and in the church? How should we use it with those who are not in Christ? Many today are trying to go back and keep certain parts of the Law of Moses. Is this right? Why was the Law of Moses given? To specify the moral requirements of a Holy God To reveal sin (Rom. 7:7-13) To minister Christ (Ceremonial-sacrifices, Tabernacle) To structure the nation of Israel until Christ came (Gal. 3:19-25) When Christ came He fulfilled the Law (Matt. 5:17-20) He kept all of the commands of God perfectly He fulfilled all of the prophecies concerning the Messiah He gave Himself as the perfect sacrifice for sin once for all He made the way that the righteous requirement of God could be fulfilled in us (Rom. 8:1-4) How then is the law to be used today? To convict the sinner (I Tim. 1:8-10) As a basis for teaching the moral requirements of God (Matt. 5-7) As a basis for civil law How is the law not to be used? As a basis for our acceptance before God ((Rom. 3:19-20) As a legal (literal) requirement for conduct (Col. 2:11-23) In the New Covenant God writes His law on our hearts by the presence of the Holy Spirit (Heb. 8:7-13) God writes His word on our minds by the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit will interpret and apply spiritual truth from the Law of Moses Spiritual men and women will use the Law of Moses to minister Christ Should Christians today keep the holy days (Sabbath, Feasts) (Rom. 14) Not to be approved before God or to be more spiritual (Gal. 5:1-6) Could be used as a form of teaching (ministry of Christ) The spirit in which we use these things is critical (must not be legal or condemning) The supreme test: Does our use of the Law of Moses minister grace? (John 1:17) Does our ministry always lead a person to union with Christ as our complete sufficiency? (Col. 2:10) Is our ministry using the Law of Moses a ministry of life or death (2 Cor. 3)   Additional resources at  http://www.ntchurchsource.com/ Theme song “Will Your Anchor Hold” sung by J. Should we eat shellfish? Keep the Sabbath? Shave beards? The question of our present relationship to the Old Testament law is a live one. How much discontinuity and continuity must there be?

We talk a lot about grace. But the Bible teaches that there is a law. And this law applies to us today. We may live in a different culture and time, but what God said then is still true today. So when you read the Word of God and ask yourself, "does this stuff apply to me?," rest assured it does.
