On this episode of Better Together, host Jan Bottiglieri speaks with Naomi Gehling, Academic Programs Administrator for Auburn University in Auburn, AL. A former Auburn alum herself, Naomi shares her knowledge about what students in the pulp and paper sciences really want from a career in our industries. Our students are amazing—they're so smart, and they're ready to go," she says. "I've not met anyone in our Pulp and Paper program who is not excited about going into our industry. They're invested."Auburn has an undergraduate specialization that focuses on pulp and paper industry training; that specialization is open to students from a variety of engineering disciplines. The Alabama Center for Paper and Bioresource Engineering, hosted within Auburn's Department of Chemical Engineering, has a complete, controlled-conditioned, wettest laboratory for chemically and physically evaluating pulp and paper. The Auburn Pulp and Paper Foundation (APPF) provides scholarship support for students on the way to becoming highly skilled, entry level engineers in the pulp, paper and allied Industries. The APPF connects those students to engaging Co-op or intern experiences within papermaking or supplier companies, and then finally with full-time employment in the industry for those students as they graduate. The annual TAPPI-PIMA Student Summit is the premier event for students in engineering and technical programs nationwide. No matter where you are in your academic journey, it's the perfect chance to network with fellow students, industry experts, hiring companies, and potential mentors. The 2025 Student Summit will take place January 18-20 in St. Petersburg, FL.

In December 2022, Congress passed and President Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act (RFMA). The bill (1) repeals section 2 of the Defense of Marriage Act, which permitted states to deny recognition of same-sex marriages created in other states; (2) forbids those acting “under of state law” to withhold recognition of marriages created in other states on the basis of sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin; (3) creates mechanisms to enforce that prohibition; and (4) requires the federal government to recognize marriages validly created in one or more states. The RFMA also includes provisions relating to religious liberty.Supporters of the bill claimed that portions of the Supreme Court's opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization raised the specter of the Court overturning Obergefell v. Hodges (which established a constitutional right to same-sex marriage). They argued that the bill would be needed in the event the Court ever overturned Obergefell. Debate centered on (1) whether legislation to protect same-sex marriage was necessary; (2) the extent to which it would threaten the religious liberty of those who believe that marriage is between one man and one woman and (3) the efficacy of the religious liberty provisions in the bill. Now in the wake of the RFMA passing, those discussions continue. To what degree does the RFMA affect or possibly impinge on religious liberty? Has anything really changed, or is this simply the codification of the status quo? Is this a statute ripe for abuse that threatens the exercise of religious liberty, or are the warnings issued concerning it perhaps overblown? This panel of experts discussed these questions and others in this panel analyzing the Respect for Marriage Act, what it is, and what it means for religious liberty. Featuring:Carl H. Esbeck, R.B. Price Professor Emeritus of Law / Isabelle Wade & Paul C. Lyda Professor Emeritus of Law, University of Missouri School of LawGregory S. "Urban forest" sounds like an oxymoron unless you're Beau Brodbeck. Beau teaches the finer points of the how, when, where, and why of trees in urban landscapes. I was introduced to him through a listener who had just been in one of his seminars and emailed me to say "You gotta have him on" and when I chatted with him I knew she was right. It's amazing how trees influence the value of commerical property, and how we repeatedly do the wrong things when trying to enhance property by planting trees. And how we often plant them in such a way that their failue is all but assured. QUESTION PRESENTED Whether a public-school employee who says a brief, quiet prayer by himself while at school and visible to students is engaged in government speech that lacks any First Amendment protection; and whether, assuming that such religious expression is private and protected by the free speech and free exercise clauses, the establishment clause nevertheless compels public schools to prohibit it. Last week, the Supreme Court issued an order in a case—Merrill v. Milligan—about voting district maps in Alabama. After the 2020 census, Alabama drew new maps for seven districts, which would determine the seats in the House of Representatives. Of those seven, one district has a majority Black population. A lower court ordered Alabama to redraw the maps so that two districts have majority Black populations, finding that the current plan violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 vote, temporarily put that ruling on hold, with Chief Justice Roberts siding with the three liberal justices. So—what does it all mean for voting rights in Alabama, and for the Voting Rights Act itself? In this episode we dig into the issues surrounding Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and how its interpretation could affect voting across the country. Joining host Jeffrey Rosen are Rick Hasen, Chancellor's Professor of Law and Political Science at the University of California, Irvine, and co-director of the Fair Elections and Free Speech Center; and Matthew Clark, executive director of the Alabama Center for Law & Liberty. QUESTION PRESENTED:This case presents a clear and intractable conflict regarding an important jurisdictional qNew York prohibits its ordinary law-abiding citizens from carrying a handgun outside the home without a license, and it denies licenses to every citizen who fails to convince the state that he or she has “proper cause” to carry a firearm. In District of Columbia v. Heller, this Court held that the Second Amendment protects “the individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation,” 554 U.S. 570, 592 (2008), and in McDonald v. City of Chicago, the Court held that this right “is fully applicable to the States,” 561 U.S. 742, 750 (2010). For more than a decade since then, numerous courts of appeals have squarely divided on this critical question: whether the Second Amendment allows the government to deprive ordinary law-abiding citizens of the right to possess and carry a handgun outside the home. This circuit split is open and acknowledged, and it is squarely presented by this petition, in which the Second Circuit affirmed the constitutionality of a New York regime that prohibits law-abiding individuals from carrying a handgun unless they first demonstrate some form of “proper cause” that distinguishes them from the body of “the people” protected by the Second Amendment. The time has come for this Court to resolve this critical constitutional impasse and reaffirm the citizens' fundamental right to carry a handgun for self-defense. The question presented is: Whether the Second Amendment allows the government to prohibit ordinary lawabiding citizens from carrying handguns outside the home for self- defense.DateProceedings and Orders (key to color coding)Dec 17 2020 | Petition for a writ of certiorari filed.

Agent 251 (Jason Will) and Lagniappe business columnist Ron Sivak (Real Deal w/ Ron Sivak Podcast) discuss the Alabama Center for Real Estate (ACRE) January 2018 Market Report focusing on the residential (and some commercial) market in Mobile (Alabama), Baldwin County, and the Gulf Coast condo market. This episode doesn't just focus on Downtown Mobile, Fairhope, or Daphne location and sales numbers but will explore a big picture approach to reporting on the state of the local market, how to analyze the data, and explaining the unique conditions of buyer and seller pockets in areas like Saraland, Creola, South Mobile County, Foley and Bay Minette. Baldwin County is one of the fastest growing real estate markets in the nation: what does that mean for realtors, home buyers and sellers in that market? How does the Mobile real estate market compare to Baldwin Counties? This episode is more than just the numbers, prices and percentages of the Market. Agent 251 dives deep into what all this real estate market information means for the realtor, buyer, and seller. Questions: Is Foley becoming the new Fairhope? How should buyers and sellers look at the sales number and data from ACRES? Why are more people now NOT overlooking Mobile real estate instead of just looking to relocating to Baldwin County? Why is now the time to decide to buy that Baldwin County Condo Investment sooner than later? Why is Baldwin County median home price significantly higher than Mobile County? What is the optimal amount of days for a home to be on the market for the realtor and the seller? How many days on market does it take to trigger a professional realtor to realize that there may be a price or condition problem? Mobile County gets a bad rap but I think it's got a lot of positives. Lowndes County, AL: A child’s ball is in the trench which is clearly full of raw sewage coming from a mobile home. A dog house sits nearby and a vegetable garden is within fifty feet of the effluent that is being discharged from a toilet. The neat little home is inhabited by a senior citizen, her daughter and grandchildren. Just outside her bedroom one can not only see the effluent from her home, but the toilet paper as well. Near the home sits a trailer that is occupied by her daughter and son-in-law. Underneath the home, the raw sewage is clearly present. The stench fills the air. In another location, the sewage is running across the road. People drive through it and children walk through it unaware of the health issues they could be tracking into their homes. This situation is not in some Third World country, it exists in the United States of America because we refuse to acknowledge poverty and the conditions it is yielding right here. This is America’s Dirty Secret. Catherine Coleman Flowers, founder of the Alabama Center for Rural Enterprise (ACRE) Community Development Corporation , presented a talk based on her recent experience representing the United States in international negotiations that determined the final texts of the Summary for Policymakers of each volume of IPCC’s 5th Assessment Report.
