In this episode, I continue my series on various college majors students may choose. To discuss business, and the professions more generally, I've invited Dr. John Terrill to join me. John has a unique background to help us consider majoring in the professions. He has a degree in business from Indiana University, an MBA. from the Kellogg School of Management (Northwestern University), master's degrees in theology and religion from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology from Seattle Pacific University. After working in banking and with a business consulting firm, John ministered to students at Harvard Business School with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. He then served as InterVarsity's National Director of InterVarsity's MBA ministry, and then as Director of InterVarsity's Professional School Ministries. He is currently the Executive Director of Upper House, the Christian Study Center at the University of Wisconsin. In this podcast we discuss: How John got interested in a career in business How he now applies leadership and management principles in the non-profit sector How positive and negative experiences in various organizations have shaped his understanding of business The inadequacies of seeing the purpose of business as only to maximize shareholder value A better understanding of the purpose of business--fostering human flourishing Developing a proper theology of vocation for all professions--why all work matters to God A wrong theology of vocation: “Finding God's one specific job for me!” How a proper understanding frees us to flourish in our careers and serve others well The reality of a “calling” to the professions, and why this is not emphasized in our churches The professions as professional “guilds” How our work can be a positive influence on culture by helping build healthy companies How professional schools in universities are similar and different from other schools or departments Temptations of interviewing for jobs with business school recruiters The value of classes outside your professional school The type of person who generally flourishes in a professional school Other tips to help students do well in professional school programs Some ways to live out Kingdom values while in a professional school program Challenges for the Christian studying in professional schools The importance of finding a mentor How to find fellowship with other believers in the professions on campus Joining a professional society as a student Some mainstream ideas in business that are congruent with a Christian worldview and some that are not God's faithfulness in the process of earning a degree in the professions Resources mentioned during our conversation: Lausanne Movement's Workplace Ministry Issue Network Robert D. Studies have shown that Federal Law applying to healthcare is approximately 8X the volume of the entire Federal Tax Code. Laws are heaped upon statutes which are lacquered with countless regulations. All of this creates a complex if not Byzantine system for healthcare professionals to navigate. The penalties for a misstep can be severe. Fear not. This episode of SoundPractice will provide practical advice from a physician who is also an attorney, Timothy Paterick, MD, JD, MBA, MS. Do electronic medical records actually help improve medical care? Is it possible they hinder it? Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law and host of the weekly podcast, Good Law | Bad Law, is joined by Professor Sharona Hoffman, of the School of Law at Case Western Reserve University, to discuss the role of electronic medical record systems, often shortened to EMR or EHR (electronic health record), and how they really affect the medical care we receive. Sharona’s book, Electronic Health Records and Medical Big Data: Law and Policy, provides an in-depth understanding of EMR systems, how big data is handled in the medical industry, and the regulations surrounding our personal information. In today’s conversation, Aaron and Sharona are delving into all of the ups and downs of electronic medical records, discussing data security and patient privacy, the power of computerization, Medicare spending and the notion of upcoding, the law’s response to these systems, and more. What should patients be aware of? Are we being overcharged? What are the difficulties in digitizing records? And moreover, why aren’t we hearing more about it? A graduate of Harvard Law, Professor Hoffman is the Edgar A. Hahn Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University, as well as a Professor of Bioethics and a Co-Director of the Law School’s Law-Medicine center. She teaches Health Law courses, Employment Discrimination, and Civil Procedure. Sharona was voted First Year Teacher of the Year in 2011 and 2012. She also served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 2006 to 2009 and won the 2014 Distinguished Teacher Award. Before she was an academic, Professor Hoffman was a Senior Trial Attorney at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Houston, a litigation associate at O’Melveny & Myers in L.A., and a judicial clerk for U.S. District Judge Douglas W. Hillman in the Western District of Michigan. An established author, Sharona has published over sixty articles and book chapters on health law and civil rights issues. She has developed particular expertise and a national reputation in the area of health information technology, with her work appearing in the Georgetown Law Journal, William & Mary Law Review, the Boston College Law Review, and many others. The LLM Subject Forum is an event held at the beginning of each academic year to help current LLM students decide which courses to take. Course convenors for each course discuss for approximately 10 minutes the goals and objectives of their course, and some general introductory presentations are also delivered. Potential applicants to the LLM listening to this presentation must bear in mind the students who were in the audience were intended as the target audience. Most of the courses offered each year will run in subsequent years, but not necessarily all of them. Please see the LLM website http://www.llm.law.cam.ac.uk/ for more information.
