EPISODE DESCRIPTIONLisa Shufro is the storyteller's storyteller. A musician turned innovation strategist, TEDMed curator, and unapologetic truth-teller, Lisa doesn't just craft narratives—she engineers constellations out of chaos. We go way back to the early TEDMed days, where she taught doctors, scientists, and technocrats how not to bore an audience to death. In this episode, we talk about how storytelling in healthcare has been weaponized, misunderstood, misused, and still holds the power to change lives—if done right. Lisa challenges the idea that storytelling should be persuasive and instead argues it should be connective. We get into AI, the myth of objectivity, musical scars, Richard Simmons, the Vegas healthcare experiment, and the real reason your startup pitch is still trash. If you've ever been told to “just tell your story,” this episode is the permission slip to do it your way. With a bow, not a violin.RELATED LINKSLisa Shufro's WebsiteLinkedInSuper Curious ArchiveEight Principles for Storytelling in InnovationStoryCorps InterviewCoursera Instructor ProfileWhatMatters ProjectFEEDBACKLike this episode? Chernew highlighted the inefficiencies of the fee-for-service system and the importance of payment reforms, particularly within Medicare Advantage, to improve care quality and control costs. He also explained the complexities of the U.S. health care system, influenced by the balance between market forces and government regulation, leading to opaque pricing and administrative burdens. This week, we're sharing a special clip from a recent episode of a podcast we love, rePROs Fight Back, where Madeline Morcelle, Senior Attorney at the National Health Law Program, breaks down why Medicaid is essential to sexual and reproductive healthcare—and what's at stake with proposed funding cuts. Medicaid currently insures over 72 million people, covering critical reproductive health services like family planning, pregnancy-related care, and abortion (within Hyde Amendment exceptions). But with massive budget cuts on the table, millions of low-income individuals—especially Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and young people—could see their access to care drastically reduced. The Trump administration has made no secret it intends to aggressively enforce immigration laws, made evident by the recent arrest of a Columbia University grad student and green card holder on Columbia's campus. Since the White House has repeatedly stated it intends to deport roughly all 12 million undocumented immigrants, this presents an immediate problem for healthcare providers who, in part, have legal and ethical obligations to all their patients. This is particularly true ironically for HHS-regulated Federal Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) who serve 32 million largely racial/ethnic minorities who, because they are largely poor and medically disenfranchised, are disproportionately in need of healthcare. One day after assuming office in January the acting Department of Homeland Security rescinded decades of prior policy that essentially stated the federal government would not take immigration enforcement action in “protected areas” that included healthcare facilities - and schools like Columbia University. Ms. Smith's most recent writing on the topic, “ICE in your Healthcare Facility? No Need to Freeze,” is at: https://www.dorseyhealthlaw.com/ice-in-your-healthcare-facility-no-need-to-freeze/. She explains how her interest in the field was sparked by the opioid epidemic's emergence as a public health crisis. A particular area of interest in her work is closing gaps in access to treatment, including studying the impact of telemedicine on substance use care. She also delves into her recent study of fiscal determinants of overdose deaths, finding that higher police spending—particularly when linked to revenue-generating practices—correlates with increased overdose deaths. Zoe concludes by discussing the importance of understanding how local government decisions affect health outcomes, emphasizing how healthcare organizations operate within broader communities and policy contexts and further connecting her research to her teaching in health administration.
