The Guttmacher Institute has released a policy analysis where they called for states to cease mandating the reporting of abortion data. They acknowledge that accurate abortion data can improve public policy outcomes. However, they are concerned that mandated abortion data collection could be used “harass” or “prosecute” abortion facilities or women who obtain abortions. Are they right? Dr. Michael New will answer that question. Then, Steve Goreham will discuss how, from paper straws to EV vehicles, the new administration is dismantling ineffectual policies impacting the environment. It's Wednesday, December 4th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark 1,500 people loot harvest of Christians in India Christian Solidarity Worldwide reports eight villages in India's central state of Chhattisgarh  banned Christians last month. The village resolutions told Christians to either leave or renounce their faith in Christ. Otherwise, the believers would have their property and fields looted. The resolutions affect about 100 Christians. Soon after, a mob of 1,500 people, many of them Hindus, looted the harvest of the Christians who received little assistance from local police. Forty villagers had to leave their homes following the looting. In Luke 18:29-30, Jesus said, “There is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children for the sake of the kingdom of God, who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life.” South Korean president declares Martial Law (audio of South Korean protestors) South Korea  erupted in chaos on Tuesday after President Yoon Suk Yeol issued a martial law declaration. Yoon claimed he was trying to eliminate “anti-state” forces at work among his political opponents in the country. He accuses them of sympathizing with communist North Korea.  It's the first martial law declaration since 1980. The military attempted to enter the Parliament building, and hundreds of people gathered to protest the move. South Korea's parliament quickly voted that the martial law declaration was invalid. Yesterday morning, President Yoon rescinded the declaration after the tense standoff, reports Reuters. 23 Conservative Party members voted for British euthanasia bill After the British Parliament voted for the euthanasia bill in a 330-275 vote, let the record show that 23 Conservative Party members joined 234 Labor Party members who voted for the bill. Conservative Party leader, and former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak,  a Hindu, voted in favor of the bill. However, previous Prime Ministers Boris Johnson, Theresa May, and Liz Truss had publicly stated opposition to the bill. Pro-death euthanasia laws have been incorporated into the ex-Christian nations of Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, and Australia; as well as Columbia and Ecuador. Trump picks reformer Kash Patel to lead FBI In the United States, President-elect Donald Trump announced last Saturday that Kash Patel is his pick to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  Patel served during Trump's first administration as Chief of Staff for the Department of Defense and wrote the book entitled Government Gangsters: The Deep State, the Truth, and the Battle for Our Democracy.  In his endorsement of Patel's book, Trump wrote, “We will use this blueprint to help us take back the White House and remove these Gangsters from all of Government!” Appearing on CBS' Face the Nation, Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas commented on the pick. CRUZ: “He has a serious, professional background. He was a prosecutor. He was a public defender. He was a senior intelligence staffer on Capitol Hill. He was a senior intelligence staffer in the White House. He was the Chief of Staff of the Department of Defense. He was the deputy director of National Intelligence.  "And I got to say, all of the weeping and gnashing of teeth, all of the people pulling their hair out are exactly the people who are dismayed about having a real reformer come into the FBI and clean out the corrupted partisans who sadly have burrowed into senior career positions at the FBI.  "The FBI and the Department of Justice are two institutions incredibly important to the rule of law in the United States. I revere both. And one of the most tragic consequences of four years of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris is both the DOJ and the FBI have been politicized and weaponized. And I think Kash Patel is a very strong nominee to take on the partisan corruption in the FBI."   Guttmacher: Abortions up 10% between 2020 and 2023 The U.S. Center for Disease Control has issued a report  indicating that the number of abortions in the U.S. had decreased by 2% between 2021 and 2022, and a 1% decrease between 2020 and 2022.  However, earlier this year, another report from the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute concluded the number of abortions in 2023 of 1,027,000 was a 10% increase between 2020 and 2023.  Medication abortions, which include those issued by "virtual clinics" through the mail, were up 31% in just three years. Today, 63% of abortions in the U.S. are medication abortions, and 37% are surgical abortions.  Office mortgage delinquency hit 10.4% The delinquency rate of office mortgages has spiked to 10.4%, just about where the index was in 2010, during that last great recession. Vacancy rates are higher than ever, causing defaults on these commercial loans. Visual Capitalist tracks the survival rate of U.S. businesses over the last 10 years. 35% are still functioning, with farming businesses touting the highest survival rate of 51%. Mining and technology companies were the lowest at 25% and 29% respectively. Bible sales grew 22% And finally, the sale of printed Bibles is up this year. U.S print book sales increased only 1% from January through October this year compared to last year. Meanwhile, printed Bible sales grew by 22% over the same period! In 2023, 14.2 million Bibles were sold in the U.S. During the first 10 months of this year alone, 13.7 million were sold. It's not clear what all is behind the increase in Bible sales. One theory was offered by Amy Simpson with Tyndale House Publishers who noted a growing interest in the Bible among Gen Z and college students. She said, “You have a generation that wants to find things that feel more solid.” Psalm 119:160 says, “The entirety of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, December 4th, in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Our first topic in this Q&A episode is a recent study which found that in 2023, the first full calendar year after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade and the constitutional right to an abortion, total abortions actually increased. Despite 21 states enacting full or partial abortion bans, more women not fewer are ending their pregnancies. How can this have happened, and what might it tell the pro-life movement about its tactics and priorities if it seeks to make abortion not simply unlawful, but unthinkable? Next we respond to a listener who is wondering if we might have got food culture a bit wrong in a church setting? Hospitality and sharing meals together is a huge part of Christianity, but is it possible to do so while making fresh, nutritious food from scratch? Should Christians be wary of ultra-processed food? Have we accidentally baptised our existing middle-class preferences for organic produce and home-made recipes, and pretended it is somehow more virtuous or moral? This week on CounterSpin: In the final quarter of 2023, after-tax corporate profits reached an all-time high of $2.8 trillion. As reported by Popular Information, corporate profit margins were at a level not seen since the 1950s, as increases in prices have outpaced increases in costs. Capitalism 101 says this shouldn't happen, because competing companies will step in with lower prices and grab some market share, right? What's different now? Abject greed, abetted by policy, and whistled past by the press corps. As one economist put it, “If people are paying $3 for a dozen eggs last week, they'll pay $3 this week. And firms take advantage of that.” One reason we have details on “greedflation” is the work of the Groundwork Collaborative. We spoke with their economist and managing director of policy and research, Rakeen Mabud, a few months back. Advocates warned that overturning Roe v. Wade would not be the end, and it wasn't. The court is now entertaining challenge to the legality of the abortion medication mifepristone, used safely and effectively for decades, including invoking the 1873 Comstock Act, about sending “obscene materials” through the mail. The Washington Post has described it as a “confusing legal battle,” but CounterSpin got clarity from the Guttmacher Institute's Rachel K. Jones last year.     The post Rakeen Mabud on Greedflation / Rachel K. Jones on Mifepristone appeared first on KPFA.

It's Wednesday, March 20th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Religious liberty in the Cuban crosshairs Religious groups in Cuba faced 622 cases of religious freedom violations last year. The number is only slightly down from 657 cases in 2022. Christian Solidarity Worldwide documented the cases in a recent report, entitled, “Repression and resistance — a return to hardline tactics.” Since 2021, Cuba's communist government has increasingly targeted religious groups, including Protestants, with surveillance, interrogations, and threats. The Caribbean country is ranked 22nd on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Russian President Vladimir Putin won fifth term On Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin won his fifth term as the country's president in a landslide victory. However, thousand of people protested against Putin. They were inspired by Alexei Navalny, an opposition leader who died in a Russian prison last month. Putin rose to power in 1999. If he finishes his new six-year term, he will become the country's longest-serving leader in over 200 years. Ron DeSantis mobilizes rescue flights to Haiti American missionaries in Haiti are trying to evacuate as gang violence continues to destabilize the country. Last week, Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis said he has authorized rescue flights for missionary groups in the Caribbean country.  Listen to his comments in an interview on Fox News with host Sean Hannity. DESANTIS: “So, I've authorized rescue flights like we did in Israel after the October 7. Because we've got a lot of folks who are part of Christian missionary groups and they do things to try to actually help a very troubled country. So, they really are doing good work. They need to get out.” Psalm 82:3-4 says, “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” Mike Pence: “I've forgiven the President [Trump] in my heart” As The Worldview reported on March 18th, former Vice President Mike Pence, who served under President Donald Trump, announced on Friday on Fox News that he would not be endorsing Trump in the upcoming race for the presidency.  He reiterated that assertion on CBS' Face the Nation on Sunday. PENCE: “The President and I have profound differences. Many people think it's just over January 6th. And frankly, the fact that the President continues to insist that, that I had the right to overturn the election that day, is a fundamental difference.  “But I want to be clear that I've forgiven the president in my heart for what happened that day. As a Christian, I'm required to do that. I have prayed for him in that regard. But the issue of fealty to the Constitution is not a small matter. But it's not just that.  “The reason that I cannot, in good conscience, endorse Donald Trump this year also has to do with the fact that he is walking away, not just from keeping faith with the Constitution on that day, but also, Margaret, with a commitment to fiscal responsibility, a commitment to the sanctity of life, a commitment to American leadership in the world.  “I mean, the President's reversal, just in the last week, on Tik Tok, following an administration where we literally changed the national consensus on China, is the reason why, after a lot of reflection, I just concluded I cannot endorse the agenda that Donald Trump is carrying into this national debate.” Psalm 146:3, 5 reminds us, “Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. … Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God.” One million U.S. abortions last year The pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute reports there were over one million abortions last year, up 10% from 2020. The increase was driven in part by the rise of chemical abortions. Such abortions accounted for 63% percent of all abortions in 2023, up from 53% in 2020. Chemical abortions accounted for the murder of over 600,000 unborn babies last year. 12.9 million barrels of U.S. crude oil per day The U.S. energy Information Administration reports the U.S. produced more crude oil last year than any country ever. The U.S. set a world record in 2023, averaging 12.9 million barrels of oil per day. This was well ahead of other top producers like Russia and Saudi Arabia. U.S. oil production has surged since Russia invaded Ukraine. Since then, many European countries started sourcing their crude from the U.S. instead of Russia. American marriages rebounding And finally, marriages are rebounding since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The number of marriages in the U.S. surpassed two million in 2022 for the first time since 2019. The marriage rate also reached 6.2 per 1,000 people, the highest since 2018. We love it when our good friend Rebecca Klein drops by to talk about the fight for life. She is the Executive Director of A Woman's Choice Pregnancy Care Center in Lakeland. The center is having an educational event for the community on Tuesday, January 30th. The purpose of the event is to challenge the Church to recognize that abortion is not just an issue "out there." Abortion is an issue in the Church! According to data from The Guttmacher Institute, 54% of women who have abortions identify themselves as Christians. Research from A Woman's Choice found that 4 in 10 women were regularly attending church at the time of their abortion. Rebecca stopped by this morning to emphasize that now is the time for the Church to wake up and step up. https://www.care-net.org/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's Tuesday, January 23rd, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Chinese Communists sentence pastor to 14 years in prison A Chinese pastor with a large online presence has received a sentence of 14 years in prison. Kan Xiaoyong, his wife Wang, and four other church members all received prison sentences at the hands of the despotic communist government, reports Bitter Winter Magazine. Pastor Kan has supported the House Church movement with what he called the Home Discipleship Network for the last four years.  Both the pastor and his wife were tortured for two to three hours by Chinese authorities, reports Radio Free Asia.  Indian prime minister doubles down on Hinduism India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is moving more nationalist and more committed to a Hindu state. That will mean more persecution for Christians and those of other minority religions. His enthusiastic support for the false god “Lord Ram” and a new Hindu temple in northern India's Ayodhya is an attempt to create what Modi has called “The New India.” Hindus for Human Rights is protesting, calling this an attempt to “weaponize Hinduism in the name of the BJP's repressive nationalist ideology, ahead of national elections in May.” Brazil floods kill 32 Torrential rains in Brazil led to severe flooding last week, resulting in the deaths of at least 32 persons and the displacement of 5,000 others, according to The Brazilian Report. And The Christian Daily reports that the Rio de Janeiro flood left 12 dead. The Brazilian Evangelical Alliance is calling for prayers and volunteers to help with the clean up efforts for church communities affected by the flooding — reported to be the worst in 90 years.  Brazil critical of Israel Also, in relation to the Israeli-Hamas War, Brazil has joined South Africa and other Arab nations to bring charges of genocide against Israel in the International Court of Justice for Israel's defending itself after being attacked by the Muslim terrorist group on October 7th. The United States, Canada, and Germany have criticized the motion. Ron DeSantis withdraws from presidential race Ahead of today's first-in-the nation primary in New Hampshire, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has pulled out of the presidential race, and he's putting his support behind former president Donald Trump. Listen. DeSANTIS: “I can't ask our supporters to volunteer their time and donate their resources if we don't have a clear path to victory. Accordingly, I am today suspending my campaign. “It's clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance. They watch his presidency gets stymied by relentless resistance, and they see Democrats using lawfair to this day to attack him. While I've had disagreements with Donald Trump, such as on the coronavirus pandemic and his elevation of Anthony Fauci, Trump is superior to the current incumbent, Joe Biden. “He has my endorsement because we can't go back to the old Republican Guard of yesteryear.” Trump leads Haley, 50-39%, in New Hampshire   A CNN poll finds that Trump's lead over second place Republican candidate Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina Governor, is now 50-39% in the New Hampshire primary today, where Haley has her best shot.  Real estate market hitting recession The real estate market has hit recession levels. Existing-home sales waned by 1 % in December to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.78 million, reports the National Association of Realtors. That's the lowest level since the 2010 recession. Court: 18 to 20-year-olds can carry guns The U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld the rights of 18 to 20-year-olds to carry arms.  The court ruled that a Pennsylvania law, which prohibits the right of these young adults from carrying firearms in public during a state of emergency, was unconstitutional.  U.S. Circuit Judge Kent Jordan wrote, “It is undisputed that 18 to 20-year-olds are among ‘the people' for other constitutional rights such as the right to vote, freedom of speech, peaceable assembly, government petitions, and the right against unreasonable government searches and seizures.” March for Life in D.C. and across America Pro-lifers held their March for Life events around the country over the weekend, connected to the January 22, 1973 date of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision which effectively legalized abortion. As The Worldview reported yesterday, thousands braved snowy weather in Washington DC, to march and attend a rally with speakers including NFL player Benjamin Watson and House Speaker Mike Johnson – both of whom we quoted. Other speakers included Republican Congressman Chris Smith of New Jersey, Focus on the Family President Jim Daly, and Pastor Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian Fellowship. Abortion rate up despite overturn of Roe Despite the reversal of Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022, the number of abortions appears to still be on the increase in America. The Guttmacher Institute reports that in the first 10 months of 2023 there were an estimated 878,000 abortions in the formal US health care system. That's a rate 12% higher than 2020's numbers. And that doesn't include the number of abortions produced by the Day After Pill, the IUD, and the unrecorded Abortion Kill Pill by Mail program.  Hear the Word of the Lord, for America,  from Isaiah 1:15-17. God said, “When you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you; Even though you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood. Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil,  Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow.” Wrestler Hulk Hogan rescues teen after witnessing car accident And finally, famed wrestler Hulk Hogan has recently been in the headlines for getting baptized and speaking about his newfound Christian faith, reports FaithWire.com. But the former World Wrestling Entertainment star is now making headlines for “playing real-life superheroes” alongside one of his friends. A week ago Sunday night, Hogan was in Tampa, Florida when he witnessed a horrific crash and jumped into action. The accident reportedly involved a 17-year-old girl, whom Hogan rescued. After news of the incident broke, the wrestling icon's wife, Sky Daily Hogan, shared details of the event on her Facebook page. She said, “Last night, after we left dinner in Tampa, we saw a car flip in front of us! I truly admire my husband, @hulkhogan, and our good buddy, @jakerask, for springing into action, puncturing the girl's airbag, and getting her quickly out of the car.” According to Hogan, the victim was “unscathed,” though rattled. In the end, she called the entire ordeal “an absolute miracle.” The wrestler also confirmed the story on his Twitter feed, explaining how he was able to pop the airbag without a knife. He wrote, “The crazy part about the teenager that flipped her car was that, without a knife to puncture the airbags to get her out, an Indian Rocks Christian ballpoint pen came in really handy. Thank you, God, all is well.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Tuesday, January 23rd in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. This January marks the 51st anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade that established a constitutional right to abortion. But 18 months ago, the Supreme Court took away that right in its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. In the aftermath of Dobbs, the landscape of reproductive rights around the country has sharply fractured. Fourteen states have enacted total bans on abortion, and seven more severely restrict access, according to the Guttmacher Institute, which describes the status of abortion rights in many states as “dismal.” One in five abortion patients now travel out of state for care.Vermont is one of seven states that have protected the right to abortion since Dobbs.Felicia Kornbluh has chronicled the rise and fall of reproductive rights in essays for the Washington Post, Time and other publications. Kornbluh is professor of history with appointments in Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies and Jewish Studies at the University of Vermont. She is also vice president of the board of the Planned Parenthood of Vermont Action Fund and was a signatory to a “friend of the court” brief in the Dobbs case on behalf of the American Society for Legal History. Her latest book is “A Woman's Life is a Human Life: My Mother, Our Neighbor and the Journey from Reproductive Rights to Reproductive Justice,” which was released in paperback this month.Kornbluh is critical of the state-by-state approach to protecting abortion rights. In Ohio, where voters approved an abortion rights amendment in November, advocates for and against abortion spent a combined $70 million.“That's crazy,” said Kornbluh. “Thinking about political strategy, I just can't imagine how we can keep going. …We need a national solution.”Kornbluh said that the Women's Health Protection Act, which would expand abortion rights, could be that solution. It was originally proposed in Congress in 2013 and was reintroduced following the Dobbs decision. It passed the House in 2021 and narrowly lost in the Senate in 2022.“If we were able to have robust Democratic majorities in both the House and the Senate, then we would be able to pass that and we would be able to protect people's rights on the national level and do something different with that millions and millions of dollars…. to get us back to some kind of humane baseline in terms of abortion rights.”Medication abortions now account for more than half of abortions, and many states, including Vermont, are making plans to stockpile the medication in the event of a national ban. Kornbluh asserted that "what will continue to happen on the ground is far outpacing the effort of anti-abortion people and crotchety conservative judges who were trying to control it." She conceded, however, "They can still do damage."

In 2021, federal rules from the 21st Century Cures Act mandated that most clinical notes be made available in real-time, online and free of charge to patients. This practice, commonly known as “open notes,” was a significant step towards enhancing medical information transparency–– a vital step in reinforcing trust in the provider-patient relationship. However, it also introduced complexities, raising questions as to what to include in the notes. “The ethical analysis does not always align with the legal analysis, and these are conversations that ethicists are aware of,” Steven Bondi, MD, JD, says. Dr. Bondi, a lawyer turned doctor, is renowned for his expertise on the Cures Act, Open Notes and Electronic Medical Records. He specializes in pediatric medicine at Golisano Children's Hospital and is an associate professor within the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center. “I think that knowledge is important, and we need to know what the law says and what its parameters are and when we can use the exceptions,” Dr. Bondi says. Dr. Bondi recommends multiple resources on this topic. He suggests visiting healthit.gov and navigating to their information blocking section for informative FAQs and webinars. He also recommends the Guttmacher Institute as a source for general knowledge around adolescent health and privacy. Lastly, he explains that he was recently a part of the American Academy of Pediatrics' committee on medical liability and risk management where he helped produce a monthly column called ‘Pediatricians in Law.' It's Wednesday, November 22nd, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nigerian Muslims killed pastor, kidnapped wife Suspected Muslim militants killed a pastor in Nigeria last Friday and kidnapped his wife. Joshua Amako Maraya was the pastor of the Evangelical Church Winning All in Kaduna State. He leaves behind his wife and seven children. Thankfully, his wife was released this week. One of his church members told International Christian Concern, “The Fulani militants killed Reverend Amako Maraya. He is my pastor. Last Sunday before he was killed, he preached about forgiveness.” International Christian Concern ranks Nigeria as the worst country in the world for Christians in the year 2023, according to their recently released persecutors report. Germans are losing their faith in God Once the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation, Germany is losing its faith in God. The Evangelical Church in Germany released its latest survey on the country's religious views. Over 70 years ago, about 90% of Germans believed in God. Now, that number is 50%, and only 20% have a Biblical understanding.  In Revelation 2:4-5, Jesus says, “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.” People leaving United Methodist Church over homosexuality In the U.S., more churches are leaving the United Methodist Church (UMC). This comes as the denomination has become more accepting of people living sexually perverted lifestyles. A total of 7,286 churches have now disaffiliated from the UMC since 2019. Over 5,000 of those departures occurred this year alone. In the latest move, the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church voted to allow 261 congregations to leave the denomination on Saturday. Georgia high school fired coach over baptisms Speaking of Georgia, a high school in the state fired their head football coach after he held a baptism for his players. Coach Isaac Ferrell held the ceremony after practice on October 23rd with a local pastor. Twenty players were baptized. Listen to this soundbite of two of the baptisms. FERRELL: “I baptize you now, my brother, in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” (sound of water and cheering) FERRELL: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” (clapping) Last week, Tattnall County School District announced Ferrell would no longer be head football coach. The decision came after the Freedom from Religion Foundation sent a letter of complaint to the district. However, the district claims they are firing Ferrell for other reasons. Indiana's abortions dropped dramatically after new ban The pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute reports abortions in Indiana dropped significantly after the state's 10-week abortion ban went into effect in August. The group noted, “Guttmacher's latest data show that this total ban resulted in an estimated zero abortions provided within the formal health care system in Indiana for the month of August, compared with almost 700 abortions in July.” States like Kentucky and North Carolina have seen similar abortion declines after passing abortion bans and restrictions in those states. Colorado failed to keep Trump off presidential ballot The latest attempt to keep Donald Trump off the 2024 presidential ballot failed in Colorado last week.  Judges are rejecting attempts to use Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution to keep Trump from running. The section forbids someone “engaged in insurrection” from holding office. The lawsuits accuse Trump of insurrection for his actions on January 6, 2021. Attempts to keep him off the ballot have also failed in Minnesota and Michigan.  Meanwhile, the former president now has a 7-point lead over President Joe Biden. The latest Messenger/HarrisX poll found Trump beating Biden 47% to 40% in a head-to-head matchup.  Christian NBA star sanctioned shoe with Bible verses And finally, a Christian NBA star launched the first basketball shoe with visible Bible verses last week. Jonathan Isaac plays for the Orlando Magic team. He gained cultural attention during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement by being one of the few NBA players to stand during the national anthem. He has used the platform to share his Christian values. Now, Isaac is launching the Judah 1 shoe as part of his new clothing brand dedicated to giving people the freedom to wear their values in their clothing. ISAAC:  “Understanding that Christ is with me and I'm never alone gives me the strength to live bold. I can't wait to lace ‘em up. I'll be saying to myself Second Corinthians 4:9. It says, ‘Persecuted but not abandoned, struck down, but not destroyed.' And I'll walk on that court.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, November 22nd in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. The pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute recently published the results of a 2020 survey in which respondents assessed whether they consider different pregnancy outcomes to be abortion, not abortion, or “maybe [abortion], it depends.” The results are baffling—but they also provide some clues about what pro-lifers need to do to win hearts and minds.

The pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute recently released abortion estimates for the first six months of 2023. Using these numbers, media outlets quickly announced that pro-life laws after the demise of Roe have been ineffective. Ironically, abortion proponents lament restricted access to abortion while claiming pro-life laws don't work.  However, according to Dr. Michael J. New of the Charlotte Lozier Institute, these numbers “reflect a great deal of potential variance.”   "[T]hese new abortion estimates are based on samples of abortion facilities, not comprehensive surveys. ... For Georgia, their upper abortion estimate is over 80 percent higher than their low estimate. For Florida, their upper estimate is more than 11,000 abortions higher than their low estimate. This much variation raises serious questions about the accuracy of their estimates."  According to Dr. New, “plenty of reliable data collected since the Dobbs decision show that thousands of lives have been saved by strong state-level pro-life laws.”   So, as always, we should stay the course and not be discouraged by the latest alarm-seeking headline.

Girl, 13, gives birth after she was raped and denied abortion in Mississippi, The Guardian, By Lauren Aratani, August 14, 2023 https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/aug/14/mississippi-abortion-ban-girl-raped-gives-birth The Non-Prophets, Episode 22.34.3 featuring Cynthia McDonald , Phil the Skeptic Atheist, Jonathan Roudabush and Infidel64In a troubling account from Mississippi, a 13-year-old girl became pregnant after being assaulted by a stranger. The nearest provider nine hours away, cost, travel, and work issues all rendered abortion unfeasible. This highlights the aftermath of the US Supreme Court overturning abortion access rights, with 14 state laws banning abortion now in effect. These restrictions disproportionately impact vulnerable communities, worsening existing health disparities. This case underscores the urgency of discussing women's rights, healthcare access, and the broader consequences of these policies. In January, the New York Times reported that Mississippi made two exceptions since the state's abortion ban went into effect. The state requires that a rape be reported to law enforcement in order to qualify for a legal abortion. The Non-Prophets previously reported about a 10 year old Ohio girl who was able to get an abortion in Indiana, (they now have abortion restrictions) after being assaulted by her mother's boyfriend. He has been convicted and sentenced to life in prison. For self-declared pro-lifers, this story ended at birth, just another family on the system to complain about. Declare victory and go home, but the three people in this story involuntarily became part of a parental control experiment by the state of Mississippi. If these people are really pro-life, there are many mothers, that need more help than these programs provide. Railing against, Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, and WIC is popular in those same circles. But these programs actually do improve lives. Funding direly needs to be increased. TANF in particular.According to the state's health department, black women are four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications compared with white women. According to the Guttmacher Institute, 60% of women who seek abortions are people of color and about half live below the federal poverty line, but thanks to Mississippi's desire to control people, we have an already struggling now-grandmother whose life has become more difficult.A new mother with a challenging road ahead. If her mother did not have the money to take her to Chicago, do you think she would have the resources to raise another child?A child to raise, while still being a child is the new mother. Experiencing serious ongoing trauma, but almost certainly with inadequate therapy. A new infant who is facing a scenario fraught with peril. Like his mother, at increased risk for drug abuse, incarceration, and mortality. There are people who dismiss reality with stories of people beating the odds. Do they not comprehend what beating the odds mean?

On this edition of Your Call, we' discuss a TIME Magazine feature about Ashley, a 13 year-old soon to be 7th grader from the Clarksdale, Mississippi, who was forced to deliver a baby after she could not access an abortion under the state's extreme ban on the procedure. Ashley was raped by a stranger in her front yard, and waited months to tell her mother Regina what happened. Mississippi has the second highest maternal-mortality rate in the country, with 43 deaths per 100,000 live births; Black women are 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy related complications as white women in the state, according to the Mississippi Department of Health. Abortion is banned or restricted in 17 Republican controlled states. A total of 24 states are expected to ban or heavily restrict access to abortion soon, according to the Guttmacher Institute. Most of these abortion bans include exceptions, but few are granted in practice. A New York Times analysis found that Mississippi has reported no more than two exceptions have been granted.

There has been a lot of news about abortion (abortifacient) medications recently. Since the overturn of Roe v. Wade in 2022, individual states passed their own laws restricting access to abortion, this includes access to abortion medications. This clearly impacts the way pharmacists practice. In this episode, we summarize the science behind the two main abortive drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, and provide a picture of how the access to these medications stand in the United States. Key Concepts Among other modalities to terminate pregnancies, medication abortion is a safe and alternative option that is picking up popularity given recent changes post-Dobbs vs. Jackson WHO decision. The FDA-approved use of combination mifepristone and misoprostol regimen to terminate pregnancy up to 70 days (10 weeks of gestation) is based on strong evidence for its efficacy and safety. Since the overturning of Roe vs. Wade in 2022, states have taken their own action to further restrict or increase access to abortion services including access to medication abortion.   These legal changes further impact dispensing of mifepristone and misoprostol by pharmacists across the country adding to more confusion. Legal councils, state boards of pharmacies, or state pharmacy associations may serve as suitable resources to consult regarding these fast-changing laws. Are you?  Kristina Supler: I, it was interesting over the weekend reading news stories and it's like, wow, a year has passed and it it's wild, wild.  Susan Stone: And it's changing the election. It's changing culture. We are really reverting back and, so the topic today is more important than ever. We're gonna talk about contraception post Dobbs. And we're gonna hopefully unpack myths and make sure students know what they need to do to be safe out there. You know, last week we had a guest and we were talking about the health issues of transgender. We actually learned a new word larc. Remember that?  Kristina Supler: I do. And I'm. Certain that our guest today has more to say.  Susan Stone: I think she knows a larc is not a bird. It's a long acting reversible contraception. But today we have a repeat guest that we love to see.  Kristina Supler: Yes, today we are really happy to be joined again by Dr. Lauren Streicher. Welcome, Dr. Streicher. Welcome back. I should say welcome back.  Dr. Lauren Streicher is a clinical professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University's Medical School. And she's the founder of Northwestern Medicine Center for Menopause and the Northwestern Medicine Center for Sexual Medicine. Dr. Streicher's, a medical correspondent for top rated news programs in Chicago and has been a guest on other national shows like the Oprah Winfrey Show, C N N, C B S. 2020 just to name a few. Dr. Streicher's also a bestselling author. She's written several books and she hosts the popular podcast called Dr. Streicher's Inside Information Podcast, Menopause, Midlife, and More. Welcome, Dr. Streicher. Dr. Lauren Streicher: it's a pleasure to be back.  Susan Stone: Anything new? What's different, on the horizon coming up? Birth control. Give us the landscape.  Dr. Lauren Streicher: Yeah. first, let me tell you that there, there are always new things and I'm gonna tell you about some very exciting new things. But I'm glad you started off with talking about larcs, L A R C, as you said, not l a r k, which is the bird. And this is actually not a new term. For us, new term for you, but we've been talking about long acting reversible contraception for a long time. And the reason is, is that we are in an era right now, which it is more important than ever to have reliable contraception. Because when we talk about contraception, we not only look at user, preference, but we look at failure rates. And we know that something that is not going to be controlled on a case by case basis is what's going to have the best rates of success.  So when we look at a long acting reversible contraception, that is something that is not, as we say, user dependent. These are contraceptions that we set and forget, and as we go through the list of options for college students to use, that is certainly high on the list when it comes to the most reliable. But before we get to the specific contraceptions, I just wanna kinda set the stage for why this is such an important conversation. Because please, absolutely, Dobbs, no question, but even before the Dobbs decision, when it became potentially life-threatening, you know, now it's, it's not just inconvenient or scary, it's, Life threatened to become pregnant. But beyond that, we know that women in college are very high risk for not only getting pregnant, but for getting a sexually transmitted infection. We're talking one in four women will contract a sexually transmitted infection. We know that most college women, about at least 70% are sexually active. And when I'm talking sexually active, I am talking penile vaginal intercourse. Because sexually active of course you mean many things. A lot of different things. But if we're talking about just the ability to get pregnant, we're looking at about 70% most people.  Susan Stone: Is that just because you're more fertile in your twenties?  Dr. Lauren Streicher: It's a combination of increased fertility. And it's a combination of complacency of not using contraception on a consistent basis or using it correctly. And that's one of the things that is really the theme of today, is I think many college women are very much aware of what's available to them. But just because they're using a contraception does not mean that they use it correctly. And in fact, if you look at statistics for unplanned pregnancies, roughly 50% of pregnancies are unplanned. And according to the Guttmacher Institute, 50% of those use some form of contraception in the month before. Now think about that. That's really wild. You know, so many people think that if someone gets pregnant it's because they were just complacent or they were lazy, or they, the worst is when people actually think that some people use abortion for contraception, which is simply not true. 50% of unplanned pregnancies are people who did use some form of contraception, but it failed. And some methods are more likely to fail than others.  And at the top of the list, quite frankly, are male condoms. I'm currently doing a study with the Kinsey Institute that I will tell you about with male condoms. And so I've been reading a lot about it and looking at these studies. And I was floored at the number of couples that even if they say, yeah, we use a condom, they don't use them properly and they have incomplete use of condom, meaning they're not using a condom from the start to the finish of sex. And the  Susan Stone: Question though, in terms of preventing sexually transmitted infections, Am I correct that the condom,  Kristina Supler: the condom was the best way  Susan Stone: or the only way? How else can you prevent an infection?  Dr. Lauren Streicher: Okay, so let's switch gears for a little bit and we're gonna switch from contraception to protection of STIs. So when we talk about STIs, the most common STI out there is human papillomavirus, right? Where women get human papillomavirus on the vulva. Do condoms protect their vulva? They do not. So when we look at condoms as protecting against STIs, it is one of the best methods that we have out there. But it is not the only method and it is not as protective as it needs to be.  Because it is going to protect against cervical, sexually transmitted infections. Gonorrhea, chlamydia. Things such as that. But it will not protect against herpes. It will not protect against H P V, and that's even if the condom is used properly. These studies, which completely, you know, just I was like blown away by is the number of men who do not use a condom from start to finish because of condom associated erection problems. Something we don't think about in young men, but certainly exists. They talk about,  Susan Stone: We've been hearing about it in a lot of our cases. Yeah. But I just want you to back up a little bit. sure. I know with the H P V, we now have a vaccine. Yes. We don't have a vaccine that I'm aware of for herpes. Correct. So what's, what's a gal to do?  Dr. Lauren Streicher: Okay. Well, first of all, let's circle back to the vaccine for a minute. I wish I could say that 100% of college age men and women have been vaccinated against hpv, but they have not. Some of them are also folks that were vaccinated earlier on so that they got the quadrivalent vaccine, meaning that it only protects against four subtypes of H P V as opposed to the newer vaccine, which prevents against nine subtypes. So even people that were vaccinated, depending on when they were vaccinated, may not have complete protection. But there's an awful lot of people that aren't protected. And quite frankly, a lot of times it's the guys that aren't protected. But to your point, herpes.  There is no vaccine and herpes is has nothing to do with intercourse. In many cases it's about oral sex. There's this idea that type one herpes is on the mouth and type two herpes is on the genitals. And we know that's not the case. You can have both type one and type two on the mouth or the genitals because of transference during oral sex. So how do you protect yourself? Let's, I mean, I'm sure all the parents are sitting out there and people are saying, okay, we'll get to it already. Yikes. how could you protect yourself, understand it, give us answers, short of stepping in a hefty bag or locking yourself in your dorm room and becoming abstinent, which is not gonna happen. So number one. There is a new product called Laurels, r o l a l S. Are you familiar with this one? We are, yes. Yeah. Laurels is a disposable latex panty, which is worn by a woman, and the purpose of laurels is to protect her during oral sex. So if a guy or a woman is giving her oral sex and that person has herpes on their mouth or gonorrhea on their mouth as you can. And, that means that this will protect her. It's latex. And this is a disposable panty. It's a one use panty that is, does not decrease sensation. In fact, some people think it increases sensation. I actually have a whole podcast on it in my, Protecting Yourself Podcast. And it's really an interesting new product. And the idea being that. It also can be for anal play, not just for vaginal play, but it's not for penetration. It's not for penetration. What's new out there for penetration is there is a product which is about to get f d a cleared. I'm working with this company, it's very exciting, and it's called LUWI, as in L U W I, as in let us wear it.  And what LUWI is. Is this is a woman controlled, very important, a woman controlled contraception for both pregnancy protection and S T I protection. And this is a polyurethane single use internal liner. So it's an internal sheath that protects the vagina, but it also protects the vulva. And this is inserted by the woman up to eight hours in advance. And she's not aware of it. The men are not aware of it. And the idea is it, not only is it not going to decrease from her pleasure, but it is going to protect from STIs both in the vagina and the vulva. And what's interesting, and I mentioned, I'm doing a study with the Kinsey Institute right now. The study that we're doing is specifically to identify couples that the man either doesn't use a condom. Or does it use it from start to finish in complete use? Because he says that it impacts on his sensation, it impacts on his ability to orgasm. He can't maintain his erection. He has discomfort with the condom. There's a whole long list of excuses, right?  So what we wanna see is with use of a woman controlled contraception with LUWI, are we gonna cross all of those things off the guy's list? What's really interesting is, I don't know if you're familiar, with A C H A, the the American College Health Association. Are you familiar with this group? No. No. I just came from their conference. This is basically a group of all of the people that run student healthcare. All over the country. So there are 700 different colleges that participate in A C H A. They have a conference every year. The American College Health Association Conference, it took place three weeks ago in Boston. I was there, and the reason that I was there is because we were introducing LUWI to all of these college, health student, centers. And I gotta tell you, The excitement was over the top.  Susan Stone: No pun intended, right?  Dr. Lauren Streicher: Yeah, no, really, because they are what they do the, colleges buy condoms, you're aware of that, that they buy condoms? Yes.  Susan Stone: Yes. And they, but are they easy to use and Yes. Can they get stuck in the  Kristina Supler: vagina? I was wondering, does it get stuck? Does that float around?  Susan Stone: Can it cause toxic shock?  Dr. Lauren Streicher: No, not at all. So if this wasn't a podcast, I would show it to you because I happen to have one right here with my purple sparkle vulva that we were using. hold it up and we'll describe it to our 10 seconds to step away and get my purple vulva. I  Susan Stone: gotta see it. Get your purple vulva and listeners out there. We will describe the LUWI LUWI to you. I speaking. LUWI.  Kristina Supler: Oh,  LUWI. LUWI. Ok. Here we  Susan Stone: go. That's right. Carrying the  Dr. Lauren Streicher: right. Here we go. Here is my purple vulva. All right. So you can see in the purple vulva. Here's the vaginal opening. Here's the clitoris just to orient you. Okay. And we made the vagina clear. So that you can see what happens inside. Okay, so this is LUWI. It looks just like a condom, a male condom, except it  Susan Stone: looks like a condom. Exactly like a condom. So listeners out there, it actually looks like a condom. Yeah.  Dr. Lauren Streicher: What the difference is it's made out of polyurethane. And so what that means is it's much softer. It's much thinner. It doesn't decrease sensation. There's no odor. It doesn't have that funky latex odor. It's completely colorless. There's no color to it, and there's this very kind of soft, flexible ring. So basically the way that it works is a woman just takes it and she just pushes this inside her vagina. super like a tampon. Not even. Yeah. But it doesn't even have to go up as far, you just, like with her fingers, she just pushes it in and then she takes this ring and she puts it right over her vulva. And then when the penis goes in, it pushes it in for her, gets it in all the way. So then, but this is, it's cool. It is, as you can see, it's over the vulva. And if you, if someone touches it when it's thin, you can't. It doesn't decrease sensation at all. But the beauty is, is a lot of women position this ring right over this clitoris. You know where I'm going here. So what this means is that it's going to ensure that during intercourse that the woman's not just gonna have less pleasure, she will potentially have more pleasure. Studies also show that she'll have more pleasure cuz she won't be as worried. if someone isn't worried about getting an STI, or getting pregnant, they have more pleasure. So this act, so this covers the vulva, and what this means is that if the guy has herpes or H P V, her vulva is protected. This can also be used for anal intercourse. Male to male, female to male. Same kind of protection instead of pushing.  Susan Stone: What about lubrication? Does it block the lubrication?  Dr. Lauren Streicher: It comes with a lubrication. Okay. So the lubricant is inside, and I mean around the side of outside of it. This one's on lubricated for demo purposes. Otherwise, my purple Volvo gets all greasy. And the recommendation is to use a lu with a lubricant just because it's gonna be easier. And in fact, the packaging will come with a lubricant. So when we went to this meeting and there was a tremendous amount of excitement because the healthcare services know more than anybody that there's all these STIs and undesired pregnancies. And that this is really going to be a huge solution. They were all signing up to, to buy them for, to distribute on campuses. So with the condom fairy, if the college, lots of college campuses have condom ferries and all kinds of things that they go around and they're gonna be distributing these. And it's not gonna be for this school year because the F D a clearance is just coming through and they're just being manufactured. But we are looking at the 2024, 25 school year. So that's the newest thing that's coming out. That's very exciting. And the thing that's exciting,  Susan Stone: women have to worry about leakage when you pull out? Dr. Lauren Streicher: No. So this is part of the FDA clearance, process. It's just like with the latex condom, they test it to make sure that sperm can't get through, that the STIs can't get through. Sure, like a male condom, if somebody pulls it off or doesn't use it, or doesn't use it from the beginning, of course there's always gonna be a chance of there being a problem. But if it's properly used, you don't have that problem and it's very, very easy to use. You know, there's been, it's been tested. We've looked at focus groups. It's launching, interestingly, it's for any age woman. But it's being launched on college campuses for a variety of reasons. And one of it is because they have one of the greatest unmet needs when it comes to protection. And again, people are not aware. You are. But the general population is not aware of incomplete condom use. And improper condom use on the part of men. And even though a lot of these women do have, as we talked about, very reliable, long acting, reversible contraception, that's not user dependent. That's not gonna protect them against an STI. I love IUDs. I think every single woman should have one 99% protection against pregnancy. But that is not gonna protect her against a sexually transmitted infection.  Susan Stone: Wow.  Kristina Supler: Dr. Streicher bringing us the latest cutting edge developments and contraception. When there's discussion and debate between birth control oh and abortion, and obviously again it in the wake of Dobbs, it's really important that listeners and, and everyone out there is aware of the distinction between the two.  Because there's often a lot of conflation. And so can you clearly explain for our listeners whether an I U D or an emerge or emergency contraception plan B, do they cause abortion? What is the difference between?  Dr. Lauren Streicher: And I'm glad we're discussing it because there is a great deal of misconception and has been from the get go. And one of the reasons historically is that emergency contraception, the first morning after pill, came out about the same time as we started having medical abortions. So it was very confusing and they are very different things. And to put it very simply, there's a difference between terminating in a established pregnancy, that's when abortion is, versus preventing pregnancy. So if you look at emergency contraception, that is basically preventing pregnancy from occurring. It is not an abortion.  And it's something that we have been using for decades, even before they had an FDA approved option available. Because it was something that gynecologists did off label, meaning we would use a combination of standard birth control pills given within a short time after unprotected sex, particularly in emergency rooms when someone would come in as a victim of rape and you don't want them to get pregnant, of course. So we would give them our version of emergency contraception. And so fast forward now, here we are. that we have much more, reliable and FDA approved emergency contraception. So we have emergency contraception pills, which we don't call them morning after pills anymore, because there's this idea that if you don't take it the morning after that, it's not gonna work. And we know that's not the case. The sooner you take it, the better. Ideally within 72 hours. But you do have up to five days to, to use emergency contraception.  Susan Stone: We've had cases where they. Don't work. So we've heard that they don't work if you're ovulating. Is that true?  Dr. Lauren Streicher: No, it does. It can work because this is the timeframe. When someone ovulates the egg is released from the ovary, it then travels down the fallopian tube. If a sperm meets up with that egg in the fallopian tube, that's actually where the sperm penetrates the egg. And then it makes that trip down the fallopian tubes and then it lands in the uterus. Where if there's a nice cushy bed that's, comfortable in waiting for this potential pregnancy, it's gonna land and it's gonna in bed. But that's why you have, even if you have sex, the moment you're ovulating, you've got this five day window before it's gonna travel down and become an established pregnancy. So again, it is not a pregnancy, a viable pregnancy until it lands in the uterus.  So the same can be said for IUDs. We now know the placement of an intrauterine device. Within five days of unprotected intercourse is going to dramatically decrease the rate of an unintended pregnancy. And then the beauty of the I U D then is you could just leave it there and you're protected going forward. And that's critically important because in this world of jobs, not only is abortion at risk, but so contraception.  Mm-hmm. And I think's very clear about that is that when we're looking at reproductive rights in these states that are passing these insane anti-woman laws, it's not just about their ability to get an abortion. It is about the ability to get contraception. And so my advice to women, who are looking for reliable contraception is quite frankly, almost, basically a hundred percent of women are candidates for an intrauterine device. And the beauty of that is that no one can take away your I U D no matter what laws passed. So if you get placements of an I U D, you're gonna be good for up to eight years, maybe even a little bit longer as far as contraception. Susan Stone: And so how does the plan B fail? Well, it can, it can fail.  Dr. Lauren Streicher: If it's taken too late, it can fail. And the other thing also is that, most of these contraceptive methods are not a hundred percent. Even if you look at a lot of the user dependent methods like birth control pills or the patch or the ring, we know that these are not 100% effective. Because there's theoretical effectiveness, which is very different than typical use failure rates. Typical use failure rates are higher. So for example, if you look at birth control pills and you think, how can birth control pills fail? 7% of the time they do. And one of do you get to  Kristina Supler: take it? Do you go to bed and you  Dr. Lauren Streicher: Exactly. And the other thing also is the most common time to miss a pill. You know when that is during your period? No, it's the beginning of a new pack and Oh. Oh, that's interesting. I didn't know that. Reason why is some insurance companies and some healthcare, student healthcare systems, they're not gonna give you 12 packs. They say you gotta come in every month. Who's busier than a college student? Who has less access to getting to the pharmacy than a college student? So they go off their, pill for their five days or seven days, depending on the pill. It's time to start the new pill. They've got a final. They've got something to coming up. They say, I'm not gonna make it there. So instead of starting their new pill pack on a Sunday, they might start it on Tuesday. And that's the greatest likelihood of having a failures at the beginning. I'm a huge, huge advocate of continuous pill taking. Meaning there is no off days. There's no placebo days. There's no period. Get your pill. Take an active pill every single day. Because not only are you not gonna get a period, which is a wonderful thing for all the obvious reasons, get rid of the cramps, the expense of tampons. The list is very long, of, of advantages to not having a period. But the other advantage that people really don't appreciate is that you're your failure rate's gonna be lower. Because it's with starting that new pack that people ovulate and quite frankly, when you send your student off to college, one of the best things you can do is forget insurance, purchase a couple of extra packs, a pill, send them off with some extra packs. So if they go away for the weekend and they forget it, or it gets flushed down the toilet or whatever, you wanna make sure that that you're gonna have some extra pill packs and that they can take them continuously without worrying about it. And the same is even like with the ring. You know when you look at the new ring and Vera, are you familiar with those two? Yes. And the people may not be familiar with Vera, which is a vaginal ring with estrogen and progestin and it that can be used for up to a year. And the recommendation on the part of the manufacturer and the FDA approval is you remove it one week a month to get your period. And I'm like, are you kidding? Don't remove it for God's sakes. Put it in and leave it there for a year and just don't even think about it. And it's, and that's safe. That's healthy. Absolutely. But they didn't. But for a variety of reasons, the FDA did not, did not okay it for that, and the company didn't try and get it through because, It's really not about medical, it's more about that. it's just it's perfectly safe to take your pill continuously. It's perfectly safe to leave your ring in. If you wanna take it out, you can take it out for a couple of hours, rinse it with cool water, put it back. But every time you take it out is a chance for it to get lost, for it to get forgotten, and for not to be put back in time. So maybe if you wanna take it out and get a light period, don't take it out for the whole week. Take it out for two, three days and put it back. it's a lot of this. It doesn't have to always be done by the book. There's ways to, to use these different methods of contraception so that you will decrease the failure rate based on some of the real life situations that come up. Susan Stone: Kristina, I just thought about the funniest thing preparing for this podcast. Did you watch Seinfeld?  Kristina Supler: I did. Loved it.  Susan Stone: Do you remember? Elaine and saying, is someone sponge worthy? Oh, yes. Do you remember? Yes. No, we're  Dr. Lauren Streicher: enough that we know about sponges, but the college students certainly don't know about sponges. Susan Stone: So do you think now it's gonna be, are you LUWI worthy? Dr. Lauren Streicher: the thing is that,it could be. But the idea is to make this stuff easily attainable and affordable. Absolutely. The reason it became sponge worthy was because they were so hard to get expensive who were hoarding them. But the idea, particularly on college campuses, is you want to be as easy as buying a pack of gum is to have access to reliable contraception. It shouldn't have to be LUWI worthy. It shouldn't have to be condom worthy. It should be. Just in case worthy, I'm gonna, I love that I'm put this in because I don't know what's gonna happen tonight. But in the event that something does happen, I sure don't wanna wake up tomorrow morning and think, oh my God, what did I, you know, what just happened there? And obviously we wish that there weren't situations where people had too much to drink. Where there was non-consensual sex. But let's talk real life. Let's talk what's going on on campuses. And if a woman goes to a party or is out drinking, even if she has no intention of having sex, if she can place something in her vagina that is gonna protect against both STIs and pregnancy. Think of the peace of mind. Think of the anguish that young women go through the morning after when sometimes they're not even sure if something happens.  Susan Stone: But how long can that stay in you? The LUWI?  Dr. Lauren Streicher: Eight hours. You can put it in eight hours in advance.  Susan Stone: Okay. So it's not something that a young woman should keep in her backpack or purse and then run to the bathroom. It should be something put in before  Dr. Lauren Streicher: Yeah, no. She can put it in 10 seconds, but you can do both. Yeah. But you can have it in up to eight hours, But you can absolutely keep it in your backpack. And and everyone should. And it's, I really think it's gonna change the landscape because not only do you get the increased protection, but let's face it, historically, it all comes down to being women controlled. Always has been.  Kristina Supler: You've shared so much information with us today and I think, our listeners have learned a lot, hopefully by listening to this episode.  I want to clear up one piece of information that I hear often and regularly and it's been going around for an eternity. And that is, oh, I don't wanna go on birth control cuz it's gonna make me gain weight. Yeah. Myth or fact.  Dr. Lauren Streicher: Total myth. Total myth. And this isn't my opinion, this is based on literally millions of women over long periods of time. And you know, multiple, multiple studies that the average weight gain at most with a birth control pill is like two pounds, and the majority of them there is none. And the reason women gain weight when they go off to college is, the reasons you knows everything.  Kristina Supler: The unlimited meal plans,  Susan Stone: not alcohol. Alcohol.  Dr. Lauren Streicher: The alcohol is actually a huge factor because I think that the college students forget about, Not only how many calories there are in alcohol, but you kinda lose your willpower when you're sitting there drinking. You're also  Susan Stone: I know that's true at any age. That's my menopause excuse too thought I, it's not the red wine. Okay, this was a great episode.  Dr. Lauren Streicher: If you do think it's gonna make them gain weight, it will not. But there are so many other options and I really do believe that an i u D is critically important for young women of all ages. But I wanna, one other little fact that you may not know that's so interesting is there is,the Executive Director of the Kinsey Institute, Justin Garcia, he is the consultant for match.com, and every year they do an analysis of what people are looking for on online dating, as many students will do, and Tinder and what are the factors, all of them, right? And they found for the first time ever, that being anti-choice was a deal breaker for a record number of women. Isn't that interesting?  Susan Stone: I'm so happy you didn't let us stop this podcast until you got that out. that's a great fact. That's a beautiful and interesting fact. Yeah. And I wow.  Dr. Lauren Streicher: A whole episode with Dr. Garcia talking about all the match findings and it is really interesting. But I love that one cuz it, it means women are paying attention. And Absolutely they're changing their behaviors based on it.  Kristina Supler: Well, thank you so much for your time today and all the wonderful information you've shared. It's always such a pleasure to have you on.  Susan Stone: You know we're gonna ask you back cause anytime wealth of information. Thank you so much.  Dr. Lauren Streicher: Thank you.

On December 6, 1907, a massive explosion decimated a coal mine in Monongah, West Virginia. Three hundred and sixty-two miners were killed, making this the worst mining disaster in U.S. history. The tragedy devastated the small town and led eventually to the establishment of the U.S. Bureau of Mines.   The Monongah mine disaster also marked another beginning. Several months after the explosion, a local church held a special service in honor of the 362 miners, most of whom had left behind wives and children. This is the first event on record in the United States set aside specifically to honor dads.  Two years later, a woman from Spokane who, along with her five siblings, was raised by her widowed father, began a public campaign to establish a national Father's Day. A day for mothers was already in the works and, according to historical accounts, was a much easier sell to the public. By 1916, President Woodrow Wilson had officially recognized Father's Day, though it would not be recognized as a national holiday until 1972.  A little over a hundred years after the mining disaster that birthed Father's Day, the United States is now suffering a crisis of fatherlessness. One in four American kids are, like so many in that West Virginia town, growing up without their father at home. That amounts to 18.5 million kids.  If statistics hold, this means that 18.5 million children are three times more likely to engage in criminal activity than those who have dads at home. Those 18.5 million kids are more likely to engage in sexual activity earlier, are less likely to go to college, more likely to have emotional and behavioral problems, more likely to struggle academically, are twice as likely to commit suicide, and much more likely to commit violence. The vast majority of mass shooters in the past 20 years were young men who were, in some way, estranged from their fathers.  Almost any social good that can be named is dependent on dads who commit to their families and is at risk when they don't. This does not mean that every child who grows up without dad in the home will not succeed. Thank God for the millions of grandparents, relatives, friends, neighbors, and especially single moms who heroically raise children in difficult circumstances. Nor does it mean that a faithful dad at home guarantees success for children. Many people squander the amazing inheritance with which they are blessed. Put differently, statistics do not determine the destiny of individuals.   At the same time, statistics predict the future of societies. Though fatherlessness is correlated with almost every major cultural crisis of the 21st century, the importance of dads remains consistently underestimated and is even undermined. So-called “same-sex marriage” and adoption by same-sex couples suggest that either moms or dads really aren't that important when it comes to raising children. Legalized abortion has effectively catechized generations of men into believing they are not obligated to take responsibility for children that result from their sexual activity and catechized generations of women into believing they've no right to expect that commitment from men. According to the Guttmacher Institute, nearly half of all women who seek abortions do so because they've been abandoned by their baby's father.  I'm especially grateful for the Institute for Family Studies, which continues to research and report the statistical importance of dads. Just as God designed procreation to require one man and one woman, He meant for that man and that woman to raise their child. Fathers love, teach, provide for, and nurture both sons and daughters in ways moms can't. The same goes for moms.   We also know the importance of fathers because God has revealed Himself as a Father. This striking designation should cause every earthly father to tremble. We have an awesome responsibility, and the stakes couldn't be higher.  Finally, every person ever created knows in their bones the irreplaceable importance of fathers, either because of the comfort, steadiness, and love we received from an attentive dad, or because of the pain of his absence. Committed dads are essential ingredients for healthy kids, healthy families, and healthy societies (and specifically for more healthy men).   Showing up, sticking around, and discipling kids as only a father can is a powerful witness to the beautiful design and the steadfast love of our own heavenly Father. Every kid needs and deserves one.  This Breakpoint was co-authored by Maria Baer. For more resources to live like a Christian in this cultural moment, go to breakpoint.org.

It's Monday, April 10th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Chinese Mayflower Church landed in America Ready for some wonderful Easter Monday news? On April 4th, The Worldview reported that members of an underground Chinese church, dubbed The Mayflower Church since they have sought religious freedom in South Korea and Thailand, were fearful they were set to be sent back to their hostile homeland. Like the Pilgrims, these 63 Chinese believers left everything behind in search of a place to freely live their faith.  Now, after their 3-year quest for asylum, they arrived in America on Good Friday, thanks to the prayers of Christians worldwide and the financial help of Christian Freedom International, reports The Christian Post. It was a good Friday indeed! Communist Chinese disciple children to reject God Since 2018, China has escalated its crackdown on Christians. Pastors are arrested, sometimes in the middle of services. One pastor was sentenced to five years for trying to print “illegal publications” – meaning the Bible. And Bible texts are reinterpreted to fit Chinese communist propaganda, explains Christian Freedom International. Capturing the hearts and minds of Chinese youth is essential to the communists' plan. Children are banned from attending church. Parents are banned from teaching religion to their children. China's Compulsory Education Law makes homeschooling or private unregistered schools illegal. When Christians in an impoverished region were told to replace pictures of Jesus with posters of Xi Jinping, a Communist Party chairman said, “They think God is their savior. After our cadres' (APPLE CA-dree) work, they'll realize their mistakes and think, ‘We should no longer rely on Jesus, but on the party for help.'” In Exodus 20:2-3, Moses recorded these words. “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.  ‘You shall have no other gods before Me.'” Court banned Abortion Kill Pill On April 7th, a federal judge issued a ruling that will stop the sales of abortion drugs nationwide and possibly save hundreds of thousands or even millions of babies from abortions, reports LifeNews.com. The abortion drug mifepristone is used for more than half of all abortions in the U.S. every year, according to the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute. The FDA has linked mifepristone to at least 28 women's deaths and 4,000 serious complications.   Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk of the Northern District of Texas in Amarillo, a Trump appointee, issued a ruling blocking approval of the dangerous abortion pill. In the case of Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA, he halted Food and Drug Administration approval of the chemical abortion drug mifepristone.  On page 45 of his ruling, he noted that one study revealed the overall incidence of adverse events is “fourfold higher” in chemical abortions when compared to surgical abortions. Women who underwent chemical abortions also experienced far higher rates of hemorrhaging, incomplete abortion, and unplanned surgical evacuation. Plus, the Texas judge ruled that the FDA cannot allow chemical abortion to be prescribed via telemedicine or without an in-person doctor's visit. The Court provides seven days before this order will go into effect to allow the federal government time to appeal to the Fifth Circuit.  Not surprisingly, the Biden Administration filed its notice of appeal the same day. However, just two hours after Kacsmaryk issued his order, Spokane, Washington-based Judge Thomas Rice, an Obama appointee, issued a conflicting Order, reports LifeSiteNews.com. He required the Abortion Kill Pill to remain on the market in the states of Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Vermont, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Michigan and the District of Columbia. Veterans Administration removed cross from Austin clinic Just 19 minutes after the atheist Military Religious Freedom Foundation complained about the presence of a cross at an Austin, Texas Veterans Administration clinic, the Department of Veterans Affairs caved on March 20th, and took the cross down, reports the Washington Times. The metal cross, which incorporated emblems of the military branches, had been affixed to a column in the clinic lobby. It bore the emblems of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard, along with the image of a bugler and the words, “Remember Our Veterans.” The God-hating group said the cross violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, agency regulations and Defense Department rules on the use of the emblems. In a letter to Michael Kiefer, director of the regional Veterans Administration unit, Mikey Weinstein, the agnostic founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, called the cross a “nonsecular display of Christian triumphalism and supremacy.” He claimed the cross caused distress to 19 veterans who “feared just the most horrible type of revenge and retribution” if they had complained directly. Christians must be open to transgender procedures or they can't adopt And finally, the state of Oregon refused to allow a Christian mother of five to adopt two children after she said her religion would not let her take a young minor to receive cross-hormone injections, reports The Daily Signal. Indeed, the Oregon law would prohibit 78% of Americans from adopting children. Jessica Bates has sued five Oregon state employees for adoption guidelines that effectively say, “Conservative Christians need not apply,” according to her legal brief. Oregon state law requires all would-be adoptive parents to “respect, accept and support” the adoptee's professed “sexual orientation, gender identity, [and] gender expression.” Bates said mandatory classes in the state's adoption application process said this included using a child's preferred pronouns, presenting homosexual relationships in a positive light, and taking children who want to pretend to be the opposite sex to get disfiguring transgender procedures. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train children in the way they should go; when they grow old, they won't depart from it.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Monday, April 10th in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. More than half of all abortions in the United States are performed with medication, according to the Guttmacher Institute. But a federal court case in Texas could block access to mifepristone, a key abortion drug, nationally. “Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA” contests the FDA's approval of mifepristone in 2000 and regulation since. If federal judge Matthew Kacsmaryk sides with the anti-abortion group, mifepristone would be pulled from the market — further reducing abortion options after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last June. We'll take stock of the case, the projected impacts of losing this gold-standard abortion drug, and where abortion access in the U.S. stands, state by state. It's Monday, February 27th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Indonesian church shut down mid-worship Our persecution story today comes from Indonesia. On Sunday, February 19, authorities disbanded the congregation of the Kemah Daud Christian Church in Bandar Lampung in the middle of their worship service, reports International Christian Concern. John 4:23 says, “The true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him.” The devil hates when Christ followers worship their Lord. Ironically, the forced closure of the church was contrary to Indonesian President Jokowi's recent appeal and undermined the Indonesian Constitution, which guarantees freedom of worship and religion for all.  In response to pushback from church leaders in this Muslim-majority nation, authorities granted the church a worship permit for the next two years while the building permit the church has submitted is being processed. Please pray for the protection and promotion of religious freedom in Indonesia. Pence and DeSantis boycott CPAC over homosexual controversy Neither former Vice President Mike Pence nor Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will appear at the Conservative Political Action Conference, reports ABC News. No doubt both likely presidential candidates are distancing themselves from Matt Schlapp, the chairman of CPAC, who has been accused of unwanted homosexual overtures.  According to a report from The Daily Beast, Schlapp "groped" and "fondled" a Herschel Walker staffer on October 19th on a drive back from an Atlanta bar.  The male staffer filed a lawsuit against Schlapp and his wife, Mercedes, seeking $9.4 million for sexual battery and defamation, reports Politico. Abortion Kill Pill could be declared illegal A pro-life, Christian federal judge in Texas, named Matthew Kacsmaryk, could single-handedly outlaw the abortion Kill Pill in all 50 states, reports Slate.com. A graduate of Abilene Christian University and the University of Texas School of Law, the 45-year-old Kacsmaryk served as Deputy General Counsel for First Liberty Institute, a conservative Christian legal group before President Donald Trump boldly nominated him in 2019 to serve as a United States district judge. The Washington Post reports that when Kacsmaryk was a 22-year-old law student, his 17-year-old sister got pregnant, and chose to place her baby with an adoptive married couple.  That solidified his belief that every pregnancy should be treasured. According to the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute, the abortion Kill Pill now accounts for the deaths of 53% of pre-born babies in the womb. Beyond the death of the child, medication abortion has serious side effects.  They include fever, infection, pain, vomiting, diarrhea, feeling dizzy, a severe headache, heavy, prolonged bleeding for multiple weeks, incomplete abortion requiring surgical follow-up, short-lasting hot flashes, hemorrhage, blood clots, and possibly an undetected ectopic pregnancy, which is life-threatening. Plus, permanent infertility could result if a woman takes the abortion Kill Pill if an Rh negative mother is not administered RhoGAM as is done with dangerous "no-test" and telemedicine chemical abortions. Pray that Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk protects mothers and their unborn babies across the nation from the abortion Kill Pill. Proverbs 21:3 says, “To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.” New details on suicide of former Clinton aide with Epstein connections New details emerged last week regarding the May 7, 2022 suicide of Mark Middleton, a 59-year-old former aide to President Bill Clinton, reports the New York Post. Not only did he shoot himself in the chest with a 12-gauge coach shotgun, but he tied an extension cord around his neck to ensure he would die by hanging. Contrary to initial reports that there was no gun found near the body at the Heifer Ranch in Perryville, Arkansas, there was indeed a gun 30 feet nearby. Officers determined that the gun was flung away from Middleton's body due to the recoil and angle off the ground. The former Clinton aide had ties to pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Before he left politics in 1995, Middleton signed the sex fiend into the White House seven out of the 17 times he visited the residence. He also reportedly rode on Epstein's infamous “Lolita Express” jet. However, one report on RadarOnline.com suggests Middleton did not commit suicide, but that it might have been a homicide. Homeschooling up 30% Homeschooling saw a 30% increase in the 21-22 academic year while public school enrollment fell by more than 1.2 million students within the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, reports The Christian Post. The study from the Urban Institute found that private school enrollment increased by 4.3% between the fall of 2019 and the fall of 2021. And homeschool enrollment rose by 30%. Steven Duvall, director of research for the Home School Legal Defense Association, said, “We believe that homeschooling is a wonderful way to educate a child and that many hundreds of thousands of families made this same discovery during the pandemic.” Doctors continued CPR for 3 hours on toddler until life returned And finally, when 3-year-old Waylon Saunders arrived at the hospital, he was already legally dead and had been for a while. Found face-down in an icy backyard swimming pool, the Ontario, Canada toddler's body temperature was so low that paramedics' thermometers couldn't get a reading, and he had no pulse. Nevertheless, a team at Englehart Hospital in Petrolia, Ontario performed CPR for 3 hours without stopping, while simultaneously using other methods to warm his frozen body. Fortunately for Waylon they didn't stop, and after 3 hours of compressing his chest to artificially pump blood to his brain and other organs, Waylon's heart was restarted and kept on keeping on, reports the Good News Network. Dr. Janice Tijssen, the director of the pediatric critical care unit at Children's Hospital in Ontario, explained to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation how they saved Waylon's life. TIJSSEN: “There's not a lot you can do when a child is as cold as he was. In fact, he was so cold, we couldn't even get a temperature read on him. So, we just knew that he was very cold and needed to be rewarmed. So that was one of the main tasks that the team in Petrolia had to do and the other was providing high quality CPR.” Waylon's mother, Gillian, said she owes a lifetime of gratitude to the care team.  She said, “They're heroes. I told them that they're God's soldiers.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, February 27th, in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. This is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Tuesday, September 6th, 2022. Happy Tuesday everyone! I hope your weekends were filled with restfulness and bonding time with your loved ones… and you know what would be another good way to bond with family? Our conference! Do you like Jesus & beer? Then you and your family need to come to the Fight Laugh Feast Conference in Knoxville Tennessee, on October 6-8. The topic of this conference is Lies, Propaganda, storytelling, and the serrated edge. Satan is the father of lies, and the mother of those lies is a government that has rejected God. Christians haven’t been reading their Bibles, so we as a society are more susceptible than ever to satan and his lies. So join us, October 6-8, as we fight, laugh, and feast, with beer & psalms, our amazing lineup of speakers, including Pastor Doug Wilson, George Gilder, and Pastor Toby Sumpter of the CrossPolitic Show, and more… AND, stuff for the kids too, like jumpy castles, and accidental infant baptisms! Sign up to attend with you and yours, or become a vendor at fightlaughfeast.com. https://hotair.com/jazz-shaw/2022/09/04/bizzarro-world-ny-gop-gov-challenger-within-4-points-n494400 Bizzarro World: NY GOP Gov challenger within 4 points? When unelected New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently told all 5.4 million registered Republicans in her state to move to Florida, I pointed to her statement as evidence that she is brimming with confidence that there is no possible way she could lose to a Republican in November. While that still may turn out to be the case, the picture is nowhere near as clear as it seemed to be a couple of months ago. In early August, a SurveyUSA poll had Hochul ahead of Republican Lee Zeldin by a whopping 52 to 28 margin. But this week, a Trafalgar poll dropped and they have Zeldin hot on Hochul’s tail, with the Governor’s lead dropping to a 47.8 to 43.4% advantage. That’s still outside the poll’s margin of error, but not by very much. So is this real? (NY Post) Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin is closing in on incumbent Gov. Kathy Hochul in New York’s tightening gubernatorial race, a poll released Saturday found. The survey, conducted by the independent Trafalgar Group, found Hochul with just a 4 percent lead over the Long Island congressman — a significant narrowing in a race that has seen Hochul with a lead of up to 24 points. The poll of 1,091 likely general election voters, conducted on Wednesday and Thursday, pegged Hochul at 47.8% — and Zeldin, at 43.4%, nipping at the Democrat’s heels. It’s still entirely possible that this is just a rather extreme outlier and Hochul’s numbers will spring back in the next couple of surveys. After all, the RCP average still shows Hochul with a nearly 15-point lead even after this Trafalgar poll was factored in. But then again, all of those other polls were conducted well before her speech where she demanded that more than 5 million people leave the state. Further, the SurveyUSA poll I mentioned above may have given Hochul a 24-point lead, but there were still 14 % undecided. If those undecided voters all started shifting in Zeldin’s direction, the race could actually be tightening considerably. If you see two consecutive polls, with similar results, that could translate into actual momentum. I’m not even close to getting my hopes up yet because we’ve been burned too many times before. New York hasn’t elected a Republican governor since George Pataki’s third victory in 2002. And even that race was very close, with Pataki benefitting from an unexpectedly strong showing for a third-party candidate who drained votes away from the Democrat. The generic ballot has only gotten worse for New York Republicans since then. There would need to have been a massive sea change in a very short period of time for these latest figures to be real. But I don’t think we can say that it’s flatly impossible. Crime in the state – particularly in New York City – has been out of control for a while now and the state is hemorrhaging residents. Hochul and her party have done nothing to fix the “bail reform” policies they instituted and a majority of New Yorkers see that as one of the leading drivers of increased crime rates. Taxes have continued to go up on a number of things, even as high prices make it harder for people to get by. Is it possible that the Democrats are finally losing support, even in the blue stronghold of New York City? Zeldin should do well in the upstate region, but he can’t win unless he can gain some significant traction in the Big Apple. Put a bookmark on this race and we’ll come back to it in a few weeks. If we see one or two more surveys producing similar results, we could have an actual race on our hands. And the down-ballot races for both Congress and the state legislature might deliver some very unpleasant surprises for the Democrats if that turns out to be the case. https://thepostmillennial.com/abortion-pill-providers-seek-to-bend-or-break-pro-life-state-laws?utm_campaign=64487 Abortion pill providers seek to bend or break pro-life state laws To circumvent pro-life laws in many states, abortion activists, including those in the medical community, are pursuing questionable legal methods of delivering abortion drugs to women who are seeking the procedure. According to the New York Times, Elizabeth Nash, who works for the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute said, "We’re going to see these different approaches by organizations as they assess what the laws say and develop their rationale for how to provide care." "We just don’t have a road map about how to provide medication abortion post-Roe, so it’s all being created right now," Nash added. The solutions to get around pro-life laws include prescribing medications that induce abortion past the 10-week limit set by the Food and Drug Administration. Another option is that physicians are providing telemedicine appointments to abortion seekers and not asking about their state of origin. In other instances, physicians are simply giving out abortion inducing medication to anyone who asks, regardless of whether they are pregnant or not, in a hope to saturate the market and disseminate the drugs en masse. As the Times reports, abortion via medication "typically involves two drugs: mifepristone, which blocks a hormone necessary for pregnancy development, followed 24 to 48 hours later by misoprostol, which causes contractions that expel pregnancy tissue." Medication-induced abortions made up over half of the abortions in the US by 2020. 11 Republican-led states, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas, had strong strong pro-life legislation go into effect right away with many other states, like Indiana, following suit. The current practices around the dissemination of medicine that induces abortion creates a legal grey area for many of these states as their legislation mostly focuses on abortion clinics and their providers. Christie Pitney, a "midwife" who works for Europe based pro-abortion company Aid Access said preliminary prescription was the solution, calling it "advance provision," and that women should get the medication wherever they can and hold on to it. Pitney said getting medication that will kill an unborn child was like getting "medication for traveler’s diarrhea." According to Pitney, Aid Access has received 10,000 requests for the medication after the overturn of Roe. Redballoon Not so long ago, the American dream was alive and well. Thankfully, a few unlikely good Samaritans were nearby to rescue the stranded traveler. The wild sequence of events was recounted by Tucker County State Sen. Randy Smith (R) on Facebook, which occurred near a coal mine on Mettiki Coal access road U.S. 48, a few miles outside of Davis, West Virginia, according to WTRF. “Today at our mine off Corridor H an electric car from DC ran out of battery at the road entrance to the mine,” Smith wrote. The state senator noted that the vehicle was stranded in the middle of the haul road, meaning that workers had to act fast to not impede incoming traffic. As a few coal miners came to assist, it was soon realized that the vehicle could not be moved by a tow truck since the bottom of the car was all plastic with nothing to hook onto. With few options left, the coal miners worked with the driver to push the vehicle up the road to the mine where the traveler could recharge his car. “If you look closely you can see our coal stockpile and load out in the background,” Smith noted as the five coal miners and driver are seen pushing the vehicle in a photo. While electric vehicles have recently symbolized an elitist shift away from natural energy resources such as coal, natural gas, and oil to renewable energy sources, that narrative was set aside on Friday as the coal miners were more than willing to help the unfortunate traveler. Smith added that one of the good Samaritans even gifted the D.C. driver a “Friend of Coal” license plate to take home with him. Abortion access has been leading political news in recent weeks. But what happens when we look at abortion as a health care tool that betters public health? Today, Emily talks to Liza Fuentes, a Senior Research Scientist at the Guttmacher Institute, a research organization that focuses on sexual and reproductive health. Fuentes says abortion access is an important part of health care for a community and losing access can exacerbate income and health inequalities.

Abortion Pills Are Used For Most U.S. Abortions. What Are They? The draft Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade means abortion access is once again in jeopardy. Nearly half of U.S. states will immediately ban abortion upon a Roe v. Wade overturn. Medication abortion, or abortion by pill, is currently the most common method of abortion in the United States. In 2020, 54% of abortions in the United States were medication abortions, according to research from the Guttmacher Institute. If the Supreme Court decision is overturned, it's expected that the ease and convenience of an abortion pill may make medication abortion an even larger share of all abortions nationwide. Ira talks with Ushma Upadhyay, associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health at UC San Francisco. Upadhyay explains how medication abortion works, how its regulated, and its role in a possible post Roe v. Wade era.   One Alaskan Island's Fight For A Rodent-Free Future For millions of years, birds lived nearly predator free in the Aleutian Islands. The volcanic archipelago stretches westward for 1,200 miles from the Alaska Peninsula, dotting a border between the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea. Hundreds of bird species thrived here. But then came the rats. When a Japanese boat sank in the Western Aleutians around 1780, stowaway rats jumped ship and made it to one of the islands, wreaking havoc on the ecosystem. The rodents proliferated during World War II, when American Navy ships traveled along the chain, expanding the rats' domain. “The rats are like an oil spill that keeps on spilling, year after year,” said Steve Delehanty, the refuge manager for the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. “We would never allow an oil spill to go on for decades or centuries, nor should we allow rats to be a forever-presence on these islands.” Read the rest at sciencefriday.com. Campsites At National Parks ‘Harder Than Getting Beyonce Tickets' Access to the outdoors has long had an equity problem. Whether it's the expense of equipment or hostility from fellow hikers, marginalized groups have had more barriers to enjoying recreation in nature. Now, new research in the Journal of Park and Recreation Administration has data on one tool that was supposed to improve access for more people: the online system of reserving campgrounds at national parks. Compared to people camping at first-come first-serve campsites in the same parks, the people who successfully use the reservation systems are wealthier, better-educated, and more likely to be white. Ira talks to research co-author Will Rice about the factors that make reservations harder to access, how wealthier people succeed in working the system to their advantage, and how publicly-funded campgrounds like the national parks could more fairly manage rising demand.   How Restaurant Menus Mirror Our Warming Ocean Before the 1980's, you probably wouldn't have found Humboldt squid on a restaurant menu in Vancouver. But now, the warm water-loving critter has expanded towards the poles as ocean temperatures rise, and you can see that change on restaurant menus. In a new study in the journal Environmental Biology of Fishes, researchers from the University of British Columbia looked at more than 360 menus, dating back to 1880. They found a connection between climate change and which seafood types rose to fame on restaurant menus over the years… and which ones flopped off. Ira speaks with study co-author Dr. William Cheung about how our menus mirror what's happening to our oceans. Plus, a conversation with Chef Ned Bell about why it's important that our plates adapt to changes in our local ecosystems.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
