Hi everyone and welcome to another episode of the Talk Music podcast!WOW I'm so excited about this one as my guest is GORDIE JOHNSON from BIG SUGAR! Gordie Johnson has earned numerous gold and platinum records with his band Big Sugar, and as producer/musician with Gov't Mule, Taj Mahal, North Mississippi Allstars, Toots Hibbert, Dennis Alcapone, Leroy Sibbles, Willi Williams, Nashville Pussy, Joel Plaskett, The Trews and Default. We chat about why JACK WHITE recently proclaimed the album 500 Pounds as the BEST blues-based album to ever come out of Canada! (also my first gold album on my Hypnotic label!) Gordie goes into detail about how he originally met Jack as a kid at a gig in AUSTIN, TX when he was the drummer for the band GOOBER AND THE PEAS, opening for BIG SUGAR. Jack burned out his 500 Pounds cassette and, a couple of decades later, was excited to re-release the album on his THIRD MAN label, letting the entire world know how much it meant to him growing up. We also go deep into Gordie's early beginnings, how I ended up signing him to my label and co-producing the BIG SUGAR debut album, earning the EDISON award in Holland for best blues album. Further discussion revolves around how BIG SUGAR broke wide open with the video for “Sleep in Late," and that exposure resulted in opening gigs for BB KING, ARETHA FRANKLIN and RAY CHARLES! We then delve into the making of the 500 pounds album and how Gordie worked his magic in the studio. Enjoy part one of his long, illustrious career! Hosted on Acast. Leroy Sibbles grew up in the Kingston district known affectionately as the birthplace of reggae and burst onto the music scene as lead singer of The Heptones. Together they popularised the soulful sounds of rocksteady, and while balancing his career in the group, Leroy discovered a talent for the bass that would create an enduring musical legacy. From the legendary halls of Studio One he constructed some of the most recognisable rhythms in reggae history. Songs that would sell globally and influence a generation of musicians. Recording artiste Young Garvey is shifting gears and appealing even more to his female fan base as gets sensual in his latest single, Slow Whine, produced by Bright Beam Music. “It is a song for the ladies, it is about a girl dancing seductively and a man appreciating her,” the artiste explained to DancehallMag. He added, “The reception has been very good, normally I do Reggae music but I decided to switch it up with this track and the people really love it,” he stated. Signed by Leroy Sibbles for the past two years, Young Garvey has been making a name for himself in the music industry in several capacities. Having spent a long period of his life overseas, he started pursuing music professionally when he returned home to Jamaica. His earlier stints were as a producer; his first major riddim release was called “Contagious” and featured acts such as Capleton, Mr G and Harry Toddler. Since then, he has transitioned into the artiste side and now lends his voice to his own tracks. “My style is unpredictable; my music is dependent on how the riddim makes me feel. It’s really a combination of many different styles – Hip Hop, Dancehall, Reggae – you could say that I am genre-fluid,” the artiste expressed. He is known for previous tracks such as Cool Natty, One More Sad Song, Money Where You Gone, Work Hard, and the highly successful In These Times which has been doing exceptionally well on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZyWPjI61DY https://www.dancehallmag.com/2020/11/02/features/young-garvey-pushes-slow-whine.html

Well this show was not a stinker so I figured I would post it online. As the virus continues so do my weekly live shows on Boot Boy Radio. I would welcome you to tune in live Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday (5:00 pm - 7:00 pm EDT). This show take after my favorite style, which is pretty typical for a Thursday, which is free form. I like to shake the Ska, Rocksteady & Reggae Tree and see what falls out. This is a pretty well rounded show featuring some of my favorite songs and artists from the 60's all the way up to today. So turn it up, grab a bevvy and relax in the sprinkler. It is Summer in North America and these tunes are sure to fire you up and get you dancing. www.reggaejamaicaway.com Jamaican music singer John Holt recently passed away. What a great singer. John Holt has a number of very significant qualities that will last over time: Holt was the lead singer for a classic Jamaican harmony group, The Paragons. Holt scored iconic hits with The Paragons like “On The Beach” and “Tide Is High” which was an early crossover hit. Holt then continued with a solo career and again created smash hits with “Ali Baba,” “Stealing, Stealing,” “Police In Helicopter, and “Up Park Camp.” Holt sang the original of “A Love I Can Feel” which became one of the most prominent versioned Reggae songs in history. Holt also sang many of the classic Reggae songs and placed his original touch – marking them as Holt classics: “Only A Smile,” “Before The Next Teardrop,” Tribal War,” and “Can I Change My Mind.” John Holt was a Jamaican super star from a young age and his career spanned decades of music, from Ska, to Rocksteady, to Reggae, and in to modern day Dancehall. REGGAE MUSIC Celebrity Link-Celebrating The Reggae Icons THE HEPTONES The Heptones are a Jamaican rocksteady and reggae vocal trio most active in the 1960s and early 1970s. They were one of the more significant trios of that era, and played a major role in the gradual transition between ska and rocksteady with their three-part harmonies. Leroy Sibbles, Earl Morgan and Barry Llewellyn first came together as "The Hep Ones" in 1965 in Kingston but they soon changed their name to "The Heptones". The name was chosen by Morgan after seeing a Heptones Tonic bottle lying in a pile of refuse. The Heptones recorded for major Jamaican record producers at the time. They began their career, after one unsuccessful single. for Ken Lack's "K Calnek" label, under the watchful eye of Coxsone Dodd of Studio One. The Heptones had a number of Jamaican hits for Studio One, beginning with "Fattie Fattie", their first Studio One single in 1966. This began a long run of success for Coxsone, including "Pretty Looks Isn't All", "Get In The Groove", "Be a Man", "Sea of Love" (a cover of the Phil Phillips and the Twilights doo-wop classic), "Ting a Ling", "Party Time" and "I Hold the Handle." They were the chief rivals to The Techniques, who recorded for Arthur "Duke" Reid, as the top vocal act of the rocksteady era.#reggae #reggaebillboardchart #nowplaying www.crsradio.com www.caribbeanradioshow@gmail.com 661-467-2407
“Keith Poppin's powerful voice and conscious lyrics are complimented by fresh sounding riddims, played by some of Jamaica's best reggae musicians including Dwight Pinkney, Grub Cooper, Keith Francis, Ansel Collins, Rod Bryan.Keith Smith had dreams of becoming a star. His neighbors in this western Jamaican town included such future legends as Peter Tosh, and Ronnie Davis of the Itals. Keith's natural ability and church-honed vocals soon led to him singing back up at Studio One after an afternoon audition with Leroy Sibbles and Coxone Dodd. Keith sang on a few Studio One tracks and even recorded a few with his friends Junior Greene and Winston Neufil as the Robins, credited on some compilations as ‘Winston & Robin.' Keith was soon performing at venues in town such as the Regal and the elegant Ward Theater, dubbed ‘the Apollo of Jamaica,' while backed by such notable bands as Inner Circle, Soul Syndicate and the Byron Lee and the Dragonaires. In 1968, he formed his own band, ‘Rocking Horse,' and began playing at local clubs and festivals. After a string of singles with Rocking Horse, such as ‘Get Together‘ and ‘Hard Time‘ and ‘Righteous Man,'In 1973 released his first solo single ‘Same Thing For Breakfast.' This roots classic marked the beginning of a long and successful recording career, topping the charts in England and Jamaica and selling over 50,000 records.#kimkardashian #kanye #jamaica #crsradio Earnest and eruditely apt, Kovan Baldwin, who simply goes by the stage name Kovan, is gearing up to bring integrity back to music's audible rewards, as this Twin Cities native prepares to deliver R&B to an enterprising destination.
