Oh, that's bad!No, that's good!If you know your 80s dancefloor bangers, you'll recognise that S-Express vocal insert and will already be donning your sparkly bellbottoms, possibly even getting right-on one (matey) because it's Summer 1988! What was making the headlines? (shuffles papers, looks directly into camera in a serious way):Poll tax announced!Gay rights activists invade the six o'clock news and mildly fluster Sue Lawley!Glasgow Garden festival takes place! Every school in Scotland goes on a trip (not like that!)England finish bottom of their Euro88 group having lost all three games! (Sports presenter wink to camera)But, BUT, amidst all of this and many other exciting things, POP was still very important indeed and - hurrah - NOW That's What I Call Music 12 was here to make a splash! (Yes, the one with the pool on the cover, ahem). And a young, impressionable starry-eyed journalist from Dundee was starting his glittering career at Smash Hits, in London Town! With the BIG names! Yes, even Tiffany and Glenn Medeiros!Yes, head back to a very eventful summer for acclaimed music journalist, author and Smash Hits alumnus Tom Doyle!Join us as we dive into the swimming pool of pop (enough already!) and meet amongst others Climie Fisher having a picnic, Carol Decker playing poker, Bananarama being a trio (just) and Jermaine Stewart not being in Shalamar. And on top of this, get ready for some fantastic 1988 anecdotes from Tom's giddy time at Ver Hits (and possibly Patches before that!). Wet Wet Wet on an open-top bus in Glasgow with lots of rock n roll mouthwash!Aswad's recreational horticultural escapades!Sitting next to Hollywood royalty (well, Richard Gere) at the Nelson Mandela concert!Rubbing shoulders with U2 AND David Bowie in a factory! (Possibly, no actually!)Tom's first singles reviews - and what was his single of the fortnight?? (it's not on NOW12)And also stay around for lots of fabulous pop reminiscing about the truly wonderful Danny Wilson, the truly bonkers Bill Drummond and the truly hairy (!) Glenn Medeiros. All of this - delivered in Tom's inimitable fashion - and so much more that we could just about fit it into Natalie's Pink Cadillac (oo-er!)Summer 1988 - what a lark eh pop kids? Hosted on Acast. I'm not scared Mandy Smith - I just can't wait Kim Wilde - You came Bros - Drop the boy Prince - Alphabet St. Erasure - A little respect a-ha - Touchy Aswad - Don't turn around France Gall - Ella elle l'a Pet Shop Boys - Heart Fairground Attraction - Perfect Coldcut feat. Yazz & The Plastic Population - Doctorin' the house George Michael - One more try
A track from the excellent Momoko Gill album. A new track from Slowe featuring Alamay on Tru Thoughts. Welsh Folk from Huw Marc Bennett. Boogie from Kuzco and Today, Tomorrow, Forever on Numero Group. Broken Beat with the Shy One remix of Aurora Dee Raynes and jjamz. MJ Cole's classic remix of Incognito. Jazz with the drums from Charly Antolini and Moin. Dub from Aswad and Hollie Cook on Mr Bongo. Another play of Calibre's remix of Sun Ra Arkestra! Plus plenty more good tunes.
Abu Sufyaan Ibn Harb رضي الله عنه (S14) The Messenger's ﷺ force consisted of ~700 men. It was initially ~1,000, but Abdullah Ibn Ubay, the Munafiq, broke off. The battle of Uhud took place. Abu Sufyaan رضي الله عنه had a close call. Hanzala رضي الله عنه knocked Abu Sufyaan رضي الله عنه off his horse and they duelled. Hanzala رضي الله عنه was about to deliver a fatal blow. Shadaad Ibn al-Aswad struck Hanzala رضي الله عنه fatally. Hanzala رضي الله عنه was martyred and was washed by the Angels (a.s).

Maka beliau menjawab, 'Jangan engkau membunuhnya.' Saya katakan, 'Wahai Rasulullah ﷺ, dia sudah memotong salah satu tangan saya, kemudian dia mengucapkan itu setelah dia memotongnya?' Maka beliau bersabda, 'Jangan engkau membunuhnya, karena kalau kamu membunuhnya, maka sesungguhnya kedudukannya sama dengan kedudukanmu sebelum kamu membunuhnya, dan kedudukanmu seperti kedudukannya sebelum dia mengucapkan kalimat yang dia ucapkan tadi'." Aswad survived a career‑ending shooting while pursuing pro‑basketball overseas. Instead of revenge, he chose forgiveness – then dedicated his life to helping other survivors heal and be heard. His story tests what we think we know about justice, resilience, and public safety.A special thanks to YOU. The criminal justice / first responder professional. Thank you for what you do every day for our communities. Remember you are honored, cherished, and loved. Keep up the good work and please be safe. I struggled. I was in a dark place for a long time. Fresh off the back of a successful Grammy Awards sweep, rapper Kendrick Lamar played his Super Bowl half time show today. Lamar's performance happened in the midst of an ongoing defamation suit over his song Not Like Us - with Lamar getting in plenty of digs in at Drake before he performed the track. The performance also featured special appearances by Samuel L. Jackson, Serena Williams and SZA. Variety executive music editor Jem Aswad says Lamar had to omit an infamous line from Not Like Us to avoid further legal action. "But he did all the rest of it, and he referenced it, he said something like - 'I want to play their favourite song but they always sue'. And at the end - not everybody noticed this - but in the audience with the light up wristbands, a bunch of fans were seated so it spelled: Game Over. Which it kind of is." A glorious ode to sound system culture. For her RA Podcast, Brooklyn-based DJ Ayanna Heaven celebrates vibrations echoing down the ages, connecting seven decades of trailblazers and trendsetters. It's a soundtrack we've timed with an eye to that golden late summer run of Notting Hill Carnival, Brooklyn's West Indian Day Parade and several crucial dates in the Jamaican calendar. Since 2020, the Brooklyn-based DJ, ethnomusicologist, dancehall advocate and promoter has held down two shows on the city's most popular stations: the monthly "Sounds of Heaven" on The Lot and biweekly "Across 110th Street" on WKCR. That's roughly 72 hours of radio every month. Light work for Heaven, though, whose sound traverses the limitlessly fertile ground of reggae, dancehall, funk, soul and beyond. From Sly & Robbie, Aswad and Vybz Kartel through contemporary heaters and reskins of platinum-plated standards like "No Games" and "Sun Is Shining," RA.950 is a story of a thriving culture, grounded in the past yet with intentions set firmly on the future. @ayanna-heaven Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/950

Aswad Thomas is no stranger to the physical and psychological impacts of crime and violence. His experience as a victim of gun violence led him to his current work with Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice — an organization that centers the voices of those most impacted by crime in the work of finding and creating solutions to it. In this episode, Aswad highlights a key tenet of restorative justice: that responses to harm should always be victim-centered. He also shares about victims' rights and services, and how we can support a reality where the response to harm and crime is one that is rooted in safety for all.

Aswad Thomas is a familiar voice in advocating for survivors–and a familiar voice on this podcast. But not everyone knows the profound journey that brought Aswad to be the National Director for Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice. In this episode, guest interviewer Jonathon Lewis flips the script to ask Aswad about his survivor story and path to leadership. From growing up in communities marked by crime and poverty, Aswad defied the odds as a straight-A student and the first in his family to graduate college. But shortly before he was to begin a professional international basketball career, Aswad's life changed overnight when he became a victim of gun violence. While on the operating table, he learned the surgeon removing his bullets had previously operated on one of his teenage assailants, who had once been a victim as well. This realization catalyzed Aswad's drive to disrupt the cycle of harm that left too many victims like himself without compensation or support of any kind after life-altering trauma. Aswad's story is one of resilience and reimagining justice, revealing how healing can become the impetus for sweeping change.

World Champion sprinter Colin Jackson on his Director role with the Wings for Life world run, being namechecked in Aswad's track Shine, how his passion for time has manifested in an epic watch collection, how it felt to have his 60m and 110m hurdle world records broken, and why he chose not to discuss his sexuality during his competitive athletics career. Oh, and why wine gums are his go-to energy source.
In this powerful podcast episode, Christina talks with Aziza Kibibi, sister of Christina's late friend Om Bomani Ayinde, who tragically took his own life in 2016. As they delve into Om's past, Christina uncovers a history of trauma rooted in the siblings' childhood. Aziza, an author, podcaster, activist, and survivor, bravely shares her experiences of abuse at the hands of her father, Aswad Ayinde, including incest, sexual assault, pedophilia, rape, sodomy, and physical violence. Aswad, the director of The Fugees' award-winning video for “Killing Me Softly," is currently serving a 90-year prison sentence for his crimes. Glamour magazine has described the facts of this story as "dark and deeply disturbing." In the episode, Christina and Aziza bond over their shared love for Om, and together they work to understand the impact of these harrowing events. Despite the abuse she suffered, Aziza has emerged as a bold and brilliant figure, gaining widespread attention on Instagram @azizakibibi and in the media for her authentic storytelling. She maintains a healthy outlook on life, love, and sex, making this a conversation you won't want to miss. Check out Aziza's book, "Unashamed: a life tainted...," available online, and tune into her podcast "Self Published" through her website azizakibibi.com/links.
