If you are a fan of saints and you love reading sacred stories, you will LOVE this book! Daughters of the Goddess: The Women Saints of India by Linda Johnsen is an oasis in the often male dominated field of books about spiritual teachers from India. Although this book was first published in 1994, four of the six women saints portrayed are still alive and well and sharing their unique wisdom! In this episode, I will share how I discovered this book, and how you can easily connect with several of these powerful women saints. I will also read a few excerpts from the book, which chronicles the author's own time with each of these saints and offers a rare glimpse into their daily lives. Have you ever spent time with a saint? How has it impacted you? I'd love to know about your own experiences! Feel free to share and leave a comment. Key learnings: The great women saints of India are often hidden from public view, doing their daily spiritual practices at home and passing their wisdom from mother to child. Over the past century, some of India's foremost spiritual giants have acted to redress a seeming gender imbalance in their tradition. One after another, major Indian teachers have passed their spiritual mantle to women disciples. The six women saints in this book are all amazing, but this is not an exhaustive list. Sri Ma, Anandi Ma, Anandamayi Ma, Shakti Ma, Gurumayi Chidvalasananda and Ammachi are the six saints profiled, four of whom are still alive today. “Over the past century, some of India's foremost spiritual giants have acted to redress a seeming gender imbalance in their tradition. In #4, we discuss what it means to advance in a yoga practice. Through the lens of the koshas--concentric layers of a human’s identity described in the Upanishads--you can view advancement as moving from the gross to the subtle, from the physical to the mental. We unpack the koshas and their related practice methods from the outside in, from asana for anamaya kosha (the physical or “food” body), to pranayama for the pranic body, and so forth. From her perspective as a private teacher, Sarah Jane shares the qualities that arise as harbingers of an advancing practice, and reveals her guiding principles for establishing a self-led practice. Throughout the show, Jen offers some nuggets for yoga teachers on how to bring a wider variety of teachings into the yoga room. This discussion would not be complete without noting how crucial it is to resist external pressures to focus too closely on asana. As yoga teachers, we are concerned with the integrity and depth of the methods available to us and our students. And as Buddhist practitioners we cannot help but bring up wise effort and muse how anandamaya kosha, the innermost sheath seems akin to buddhanature. We finish with resources for people who want to move beyond asana and pranayama.Follow us on Facebookand Instagram, or send us a note at feedback@skillfulmeanspodcast.comSources and Further Reading:Athorough article-length overview of “The Koshas: 5 Layers of Being” by Linda Johnsen. Rediscovering the mysticism of the ancient greek philosophies, with author Linda Johnsen.
A constant theme in my radio show has been Unity: we are all One, we are all connected, we are more alike than we are different. What we don't know about the history of our Western civilization puts an exclamation point on this theme. We hear a lot about the different beliefs stemming from Western and Eastern thought and religion. As it turns out, we haven't been taught the whole truth. The Greek philosophers, who are considered to be the founders of Western civilization and scientific thought, were also masters of spiritual wisdom. They traveled to India and Egypt to study and brought back spiritual practices like meditation and beliefs including karma, reincarnation and spiritual transcendence. Pythagoras remembered his past lives, founded a successful ashram in Italy in 600 BCE and his followers strove for enlightenment. Maybe there is not a great divide between the East and West as we have been led to believe. Please join me Thursday to learn more about mysticism in ancient Greece.

Aired Wednesday, 11 January 2017, 8:00 PM ET When we think of the roots of Western Civilization, our minds go to ancient Greece and the great philosophers like Pythagoras, Plato and Socrates. The question arises, were their ideas and concepts original and unique to them or were they inspired by others… other cultures and other civilizations? What would you think if you were told that there were Ashrams in Europe 2500 years ago or that many of the famous Greek Philosophers studied in India and were directly influenced by the great yogic traditions? My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Linda Johnsen, says there is impressive historical evidence for this and that Western tradition bears a striking resemblance to Eastern spirituality. Linda Johnsen is a long-time student of religious philosophy. She holds degrees in Eastern and Western Psychology and has post-graduate training in Theology and Sanskrit. Linda joined me for an enlightening chat about her new book Lost Masters: Rediscovering The Mysticism of the Ancient Greek Philosophers, in which she offers a fascinating opportunity to reacquaint ourselves with the ancient Greek masters, revealing a side of Western philosophy that has been almost completely ignored by traditional academia. "Ashrams in Europe twenty-five hundred years ago? Greek philosophers studying in India? Meditation classes in ancient Rome? It sounds unbelievable, but it’s historically true. Alexander the Great had an Indian guru. Pythagoras encouraged their students to meditate. Apollonius, the most famous Western sage of the first century c.e., visited both India and Egypt." I've published over 200 articles on topics related to yoga and Hindu spirituality in many magazines including Yoga Plus, Yoga International, Yoga Journal, Himalayan Path, The Mountain Astrologer, and Light of Consciousness. I'm also author of eight books so farincluding Daughters of the Goddess: The Women Saints of India, and The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Hinduism. I've lectured throughout the U.S. on Goddess spirituality, yoga, Hinduism, and Vedic Astrology. I've suffered through numerous radio and cable TV interviews. I have a Master's degree in Eastern Studies. For four years I was Manager of the Center for Holistic Medicine in Glenview, Illinois. Later I served as Administrator of the Program in Eastern Studies, in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. This was a fully accredited Master’s degree program which focused on the many facets of the yoga tradition: hatha yoga postures, stress reduction and breathing exercises, diet, physiology, ethics, philosophy, Sanskrit studies, meditation and research. These days I'm still writing, teaching, and introducing people to their Vedic horoscope. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area where my husband, Johnathan Brown, shares my passion for the Vedic tradition. To learn more about Linda and her work, visit: http://thousandsuns.users.sonic.net/.

Greek Philosophers are often praised for their intellect and logic, but what if there was a deeper, more spiritual side to these great thinkers that's not often taught in schools? Greek Philosophers not only had contact with, but sought out yogis, sages, and teachers from Indian, Egyptian, and Persian cultures. They practiced meditation, vegetarianism, and often believed in concepts of karma and reincarnation. Join us on this exciting conversation with Linda Johnsen about the links between ancient Greek and Roman philosophers and the mystical traditions of the near and far east.
