There is something special when we take folks out of their own lives and to a new place. This week on the podcast I got the chance to talk with The Himalayan Institute's Ransom Hare, who runs their retreat program, and we had the best time chatting.Ransom talks to us about what they do to get alleviate all those travel worries and jitters that folks have when they travel, what our role is in their experience, and so much more.KEY TAKEAWAYS*When traveling, you are creating an experience for your students who come with you. So thinking about how you build that for folks who are traveling with you is key. As Ransom said, the Himalayan Institute utilizes tech before their trips to get through the awkward conversations that happen with folks where they don't get to know each other, and this is just one of many ways you can do this. It could be encouraging people to write everyone else a letter, meeting online, or having some “get to know you” questions passed around before the trip. *I love that the HI uses online platforms to connect people who are coming together for a travel experience. This is so innovative, and I think we can all take note of this idea and find our own version of it for travel and conference experiences we are creating.*Energy exchange is something I talk about a lot in real life when I am chatting with people about business. In an ideal world, we are putting in the same amount of energy as our clients & students–so we put in effort to get them into our business and on our retreats, and they meet us with your financial resources, time, and effort. Keep this in mind when you are doing “customer service” in experiences. Have you put in the appropriate amount of effort to match your clients or students? Is the reverse true? *Figuring out how to manage tension is a big topic in yoga, business, travel, social justice, and other spaces. How are you able to be the calm and manage your own tension in times when your students are feeling frustrated or ill at ease? This is something I actually think we don't train for enough–can we respond to our clients, students, and co-workers with calm and ease; or is our habit to offset our tension to make other people feel badly? Admit it, you've probably at least thought once or twice about taking your yoga students on a retreat.Where would you go?Costa Rica? Puerto Rico? California? Italy? Maybe somewhere closer for you like a state park or nature sanctuary. This week we chat with travel expert Heather Horrell about what it takes to organize wellness travel, what trends she is seeing, and so much more.KEY TAKEAWAYS:*Wellness travel is booming right now, and looks to be for the foreseeable future. If travel is a part of your business plan or career dreams, consider really diving into what that dream might look like in reality.*The guilt about selling this ideal of the epitome of wellness while also not being a part of it anymore is something I think is a huge issue within our industry. “You are selling something you no longer are” is something that Heather said that really resonated with me.To me this is akin to hearing spiritual leaders describe a crisis of faith. And it is totally normal. See out guidance or take a break if you can and need to.*Studios are great places to foster wellness travel and community. I know so many studios that have retreats, within their country and internationally, as a part of their offerings.*Being more local is going to be a trend this season, and I suspect for the next couple of years. If you are conscious of folks' pocketbooks and the accessibility of travel for most people, I understand that–Heather and I both agree that this is a big discussion. But seeing if you can host events that are more easily accessible by car or train is a good option, and also having discounted rates, sponsored spots, and other opportunities for discounted rates (like volunteer spots) are great ways to make your adventures more accessible to lots of people. *Creating experiences is another theme throughout this series. In the last of this series I talk with the lead for the travel team from the Himalayan Institute, which has had a long history of travel tourism as an organization. If this topic interests you, take notes from our guests this season, Heather, Amy and Ransom about how you can create experiences for your own community.*Finally, start small! You don't need to book that trip to Costa Rica right away, you can take a trip to a Botanical Garden near you, that cute little tourist town an hour away, or rent some cabins in the woods for the night. There are so many ways you can create community and connection while traveling, and you don't need to go far.RESOURCESWorking In Yoga WebsiteWorking In Yoga NewsletterHeather's Facebook GroupHeather's WebsiteSPONSORSunlight Streams BlogSunlight Apothecary

As we continue the series Four Steps To Reveal Your Divine Essence this segment elaborates on Step 2 - How to Develop Your Divine Essence. In this segment we talk about the importance of discipline, and differentiating yourself from the crowd by not conforming and learning to think for yourself so that you don't continue to fall prey to the subliminal programming from society. The emphasis in on being inwardly guided by the God Mind presence and consciousness that is your divine nature. You can choose to connect to develop a positive attitude about yourself and your life. It can be best formed by accepting a spiritual foundation upon which you self image rests. Developing your divine essence includes, as Michael Beckwith points out meditating, studying, and surrounding yourself with people that are on the path of spiritual evolution and not religious dogma. Remember that the power that created you is within you and can be reached in numerous ways, the most fundamental of which is trough a conscious mental attitude that can call if forth. When Jeanne Heileman became a yoga teacher in 1996, there was no career for this field. She had the intention to teach once a week as a work supplement in the non-profit arts world to pay off her graduate school student debt. Three months after taking her first teacher training she found herself teaching 20 classes a week! A total life transformation that continued to evolve into her own style of yoga called Tantra Flow, which combines her 35 years of study in the practices and science of yogic disciplines, combining her love for asana, meditation, pranayama, mantra, Ayurveda, Buddhism, and Tantra in the living lineage of Sri Vidya, from Himalayan Institute under Swami Rama and Pandit Rajmani Tigunait. In this episode, we're talking about what makes a good yoga teacher and some of the insights Jeanne has gained through her years of practicing under the guidance of many different teachers. Experience bring wisdom and Jeanne has a depth of perspective that is rare in teachers today. MY INNER CIRCLE MEMBERSHIP IS NOW OPEN! Welcome to Times Will Tell, The Times of Israel's weekly feature podcast. This week, we speak with Jeff Abella, chief executive of Moka Origins, a kosher boutique coffee roaster and chocolate retailer based in Honesdale, PA, on the grounds of the Himalayan Institute, a yoga and meditation retreat in northeastern Pennsylvania. Abella and his staff of 15 roast and grind coffee and cocoa beans, creating their artisanal chocolates and coffee for a greater purpose. The products are part of the institute's humanitarian efforts to help subsistence farmers in Cameroon find better ways to earn money and support themselves and their farms under better conditions. Moka Origins is looking ahead to helping farms as well as in Uganda, Costa Rica and Mexico. For Abella, it's all about excellent coffee and fine chocolate, but it's just as much about social entrepreneurship. He wants more people consuming fine craft chocolate and coffee in order to broaden the net of people engaging in their social impact project. As Abella says, "the more chocolate and coffee we can sell, the more good we can do." Financial instability leads to the onset of health instability and vice versa. Taking charge of one can be a key factor in improving the other. Today's guest Marie Sennett, is a Certified Yoga Teacher, who trained at the Himalayan Institute under a long line of authentic yoga masters. She trained in Trauma Sensitive Yoga to address the needs of many. Marie is also a Certified Transformation Life Coach. And, has been a civil rights attorney for over 30 years. Marie creates personalized yoga and meditation programs tailored to the needs and goals of her students. She has helped her students sleep better, feel more relaxed, find focus, become stronger and more flexible, and find time for themselves. Millions of people struggle with both mental and financial health every day. It can be tough to know where to start when it comes to getting help. What to expect in the Yoga In Croatia episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Eli and I began our conversation with learning how yoga first came into her life. She first encountered yoga through meditation, and then through books given to her by a friend. At this time, a few decades ago, there were no yoga studios in Croatia. She feels enormous gratitude that she first came to yoga through mediation as Eli says, “After all, yoga is a liberation path to the ultimate truth and to the Supreme. And so meditation is the crown of yoga.” We then shared our mutual gratitude and respect for Thich Nhat Hanh, which dovetailed into a conversation about finding a teacher wherever you look— whether that is your family, your friends, or a cat. Which then progressed into a conversation about how to integrate yoga in your daily life, touching on Ayurvedic practices and perspectives. We wrapped up the episode talking about Croatia and about what the yoga scene is like in Croatia now. Curious? Have you ever been curious about the philosophy of the ancient practice of Ayurveda? Brought into mainstream by the likes of Deepak Chopra and many others in the US.the traditional Hindu system of medicine, which is based on the idea of balance in bodily systems and uses diet, herbal treatment, and yogic breathing. Hmmm seems I've heard this systemic approach to healing in a more modern context…like Functional Medicine? As we learn…nothing is really new as the tradition of Ayurveda has been connecting gut health to many illnesses for thousands of years which is fascinating. Understanding ancient cultures and going back to the discoveries that have been around for thousands of years and coupling that with the science of today brings us closer to true healing. My guest today is Nikki Estrada, yogi and Ayurvedic practitioner out of Marin County California. COVID-19 Disinformation (0:30)Guest: Eric Jensen, JD, Professor of International Law, Brigham Young UniversityThe United States currently leads the world in COVID-19 cases, followed by Spain, Italy, Germany, France and then China. But US intelligence officials say China's numbers are probably much higher and the country's just not reporting them. Same thing may also be true about pandemic information coming out of Iran, Russia and other repressive regimes. How can the world respond to a global health crisis like this if we can't trust each other to tell the truth about how bad it is? Museum of the Bible's Dead Sea Scrolls Are Fakes (19:08)Guest: Jeffrey Kloha, Chief Curatorial Officer at the Museum of the BibleThe Dead Sea Scrolls are among the oldest biblical texts ever found – dating back 2,000 years. Bedouin herders found them in caves in the 1940s and most of them today are in the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. But a few priceless fragments are held in private collections and other museums around the world. So it was a big, big deal for the Museum of the Bible in Washington DC to secure a half dozen Dead Sea Scroll fragments in the last decade. Now, the Museum has learned its fragments are fakes. Really, really good fakes. Family Farmers Are Disappearing. Does America Really Need Them? (35:39)Guest: Eric Sannerud, Farmer, Entrepreneur, and Business OwnerFamily farming was at its peak in America 85 years ago and it's been in steady decline since then. Sure, there's still a lot of farming happening in the country, it's just being done by fewer people with much bigger farms. The shift toward giant farming operations is making it harder and harder for small-time farmers who do it because they love it to stay afloat – and when they're too old to keep it up, their kids and grandkids are often not interested in taking over. Eric Sannerud is an exception. He's under 30 and growing hops on the Minnesota farm that's been in his family for four generations. Sannerud is part of a nationwide effort to save family farming in America. Manmade Ice Pyramids Compensate for Disappearing Glaciers in Himalayas (50:38)Guest: Sonam Wangchuk, Engineer, Director of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, LadakhThe region of Ladakh, high in the Himalayas of northern India, doesn't get much rain, so the people there have long relied on melting glaciers for water to drink and grow their crops. But the glaciers are disappearing. So the people of Ladakh are making their own mountains of ice – they look like ice castles – to store water for the spring and summer. They're called “Ice Stupas.”I Live Simply Movement: https://www.ilivesimply.org/ Teens Who Play Sports Have More Resilience (1:10:34)Guest: Paul Caldarella, Professor of Counseling Psychology and Special Education, Brigham Young University. We're all in need of resilience right now, with the stress of the pandemic weighing on our families and communities. Playing sports turns out to be a great way to teach resilience to kids. Award-Winning Cartoonist on Stepping Into the Unknown With Young Readers (1:20:49)Guest: Gene Luen Yang, MacArthur Genius Grant Recipient, National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, Cartoonist and Graphic Novelist, “Dragon Hoops”Gene Luen Yang's first graphic novel drew from his own experiences growing up Asian in America. It was called “American Born Chinese” and won him all kinds of praise, including being the first graphic novel ever nominated for a National Book Award. Yang's latest graphic novel for teens also draws from real life – but it's about basketball, which is something much less familiar to him. In fact, the very first line in the book, “Dragon Hoops” is Yang telling us, “I hated sports ever since I was a little kid. Especially basketball.” So why write a whole book on it?
Eric Jensen of Brigham Young Univ on COVID-19 disinformation. Jeffrey Kloha of The Museum of the Bible on Dead Sea Scroll fakes. Eric Sannerud, farmer and entrepreneur, on the rising generation of US farmers. Sonam Wangchuk of The Himalayan Institute of Alternatives on artificial glaciers. Paul Caldarella of Brigham Young Univ on resilience from sports. Gene Luen Yang, cartoonist and graphic novelist, on “Dragon Hoops."

In #4, we discuss what it means to advance in a yoga practice. Through the lens of the koshas--concentric layers of a human’s identity described in the Upanishads--you can view advancement as moving from the gross to the subtle, from the physical to the mental. We unpack the koshas and their related practice methods from the outside in, from asana for anamaya kosha (the physical or “food” body), to pranayama for the pranic body, and so forth. From her perspective as a private teacher, Sarah Jane shares the qualities that arise as harbingers of an advancing practice, and reveals her guiding principles for establishing a self-led practice. Throughout the show, Jen offers some nuggets for yoga teachers on how to bring a wider variety of teachings into the yoga room. This discussion would not be complete without noting how crucial it is to resist external pressures to focus too closely on asana. As yoga teachers, we are concerned with the integrity and depth of the methods available to us and our students. And as Buddhist practitioners we cannot help but bring up wise effort and muse how anandamaya kosha, the innermost sheath seems akin to buddhanature. We finish with resources for people who want to move beyond asana and pranayama.Follow us on Facebookand Instagram, or send us a note at feedback@skillfulmeanspodcast.comSources and Further Reading:Athorough article-length overview of “The Koshas: 5 Layers of Being” by Linda Johnsen. Introduction 2:13 What is Himalayan Institute trained - Longest, unbroken tradition of philosophy. Combines yoga, Ayurveda, tantra in one approach. Nikki is an ayurvedic yoga specialist, currently studying to be an ayurvedic yoga therapist. She designs practise from the context of Ayurveda. For example, time of day, season, students’ unique needs. Her goal is to have students develop and follow their own daily practice. (Many consider Ayurveda and yoga to be sister sciences. Nikki considers yoga to be within the context of Ayurveda.) Ayurveda postulates that all matter has 5 elements i.e., light and dark, dense, airy, etc. So early evening classes are when most people have least endurance and is probably not a good time for a power yoga class. Evening has natural rhythms that prepare us for sleep. 11:50 Nikki works with survivors of domestic violence. Everyone expresses their trauma differently according to their innate constitution. So have to design classes based on students’ constitutions. Cultures worldwide has abused women; second class citizen, unequal opportunity, legally (often abusers usually have access to their children and continue abuse through that means). So many women have been abused. Living in these situations for long period of time is an intense drain on their resources. Domestic abuse survivors rarely have the support they need even the most basic need for safety. Yoga and Ayurveda do not ask you to do anything but go inside yourself and reflect. 16:50 Nikki has designed the Peaceful Life Project. Her first challenge was to find a space. Studios were concerned as to whether they could keep the students and teachers safe. Many hurdles to find a safe space. Decided to make it a digital program. Individuals and refuges can buy a year’s program to support themselves or their clients. Each person can practice in their own safe place. Don’t have to pay for childcare or gym clothes, or pay class fees. Nikki is hoping that they will come to live yoga instead of just taking a class. 21:37 For those that can’t afford the fees of the digital class can enter into a work exchange program. They receive training in the form of videos, and written materials to do light marketing and fundraise. Each person sets their own goals after completing training. This provides the survivor with current work skills and references, spreads the mission of the Peaceful Life Project in the survivor’s community, and educates the community about domestic violence. 26:15 Survivors represent all demographics. They may be challenged to take the label of domestic violence survivor. Ask you to turn to your yoga practice and be aware what comes up for you when you think about domestic violence. Do you identify as a domestic violence survivor? Contacts: Website: http://www.sweethearthyoga.com Email: sweethearthyoga@gmail.com

Joan Bello is the author of The Benefits of Marijuana: Physical, Psychological and Spiritual. She has been writing on cannabis since before the internet; since getting information meant driving from library to library hunting the stacks; since any mention of cannabis in public might have meant federal investigations and jail time. It was during the height of the Drug War that she published this book; when the knowledge was forbidden, and she has continued to advocate for it since. Her perspective on the benefits of marijuana was an outgrowth of her training at the Himalayan Institute under the tutelage of Swami Rama, who she describes as an advanced Tantric Master. Joan has been a Hospice Worker, an editor, a grower, an activist, a jail counselor, a fugitive from the law and even a prisoner. She was the director of the class action lawsuit that sued the U.S. government for its prohibition of therapeutic cannabis in 1998. She also has a Master of Science Degree in eastern studies and holistic health. At 75 years old, Joan Bello is an elder of the modern cannabis movement. We welcome her to ATTMind to share some of her stories from the trenches of the drug war, her perspectives on where we are and where we are going with cannabis as a society, as well as her perspectives on what benefits cannabis does, and does not, have to offer us as individuals and as a society. *** See the full show notes and my blog entry on this episode: http://bit.ly/ATTMind62 *** Episode Breakdown What led Joan Bello to dedicate her life to cannabis activism. With travel as a passion, you will often find her chanting with Buddhist monks, cooking a curry with her son, or discovering a long lost healing technique when abroad. What's Covered in this Episode In this conversation, Tanya and I talk about… How she stumbled into yoga as a way to heal. How she transitioned from the West Coast dot-com world of the 1990's to being laid off, and now running a thriving school. the moment she knew she would teach yoga for the rest of her life, and how everything we experience brings us to “this point”. Doing what you love, staying fascinated and deepening your knowledge. Being willing to be helped, and mentoring others so they can be skillful. Tanya also shares why it's so important to her to be in selfless service — being full enough inside so that she can give to others without any loss. Joyfully showing up and offering compassion, or kindness, or assistance, and the joys of seeing a person's burdens lifted. And we touch on intuition and getting closer to the soul. Tanya weaves a lot of travel into her life and though she lives in Minnesota, we chatted while she was abroad in London, which was pretty fun. Enjoy! Awake 2 Oneness Radio with guest Lara Rubin Alexiou Friday September 25, 2015 Live at 7:00 PM EDT. I began practicing Hot Yoga two months ago and met an incredible women, Lara Rubin Alexiou. She is the owner of Steamtown Hot Yoga in Scranton, PA. What is so amazing about Lara is she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2003 at the age of 25 and at that time she could barely walk up a flight of stairs. The reason Lara's story resonates so deeply with me is because my daughter was also diagnosed with MS the exact same year when she was only 23 years old. Lara Rubin Alexiou has been teaching yoga for almost 15 years and has no symptoms of MS. She has trained and has been certified with Bikram, Jimmy Barkan and Zen Wellness in Yoga and Qigong. She is currently completing certification as an Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist through the Himalayan Institute and NAMA. She personally trains and certifies each teacher at Steamtown Yoga through a 200 hour program that meets or exceeds the standards at set out by Yoga Alliance. In 2007, Lara opened the doors to Steamtown Yoga bringing the healing transformation of Hot Yoga to NEPA. Steamtown Yoga is the first Hot Studio to open in NEPA and one of the first Yoga studios to open in the greater Scranton area. Lara travels the country and the world with her husband John, studying Yoga, Qigong and the Eastern Healing Arts. Lara is excited to address the broader perspectives of space and architecture, space within the body and the mind, the architecture of the body, and how someone's outer world and what someone creates on the physical level is a reflection of their inner world.
