Happy Easter, friends. In this special episode, Thomas explores Jesus's words to marry when she recognizes Him risen from the tomb: “Do not cling to me.” From a contemplative perspective, what could this mean? What happens when we stop clinging to our wrong ideas, our limiting beliefs? With open mind and open heart, we can come to know the Living Presence that is already in our midst. Christ is risen, indeed! Enjoy this Easter meditation.
This meditation guides us to awaken to our senses through scanning through the body and then listening to sounds. When distracted by thoughts we relax open again and again, learning to rest in the formless awareness that includes sounds, sensations and all passing experience.
In this guided meditation we begin with a body scan, and rest in awareness with our senses awake. The key practice is to recognize when the mind immerses in virtual reality, reawaken our senses, and surrender again and again into the immediacy, vibrance and mystery of living presence.
This practice uses the image and felt sense of a smile as we scan through the body, include sound and relax back into the awareness that is the source of all experience. By letting life be just as it is, we become pure living presence – wakeful, open and tender.
The pathway to experiencing full aliveness and openheartedness is by awakening awareness throughout the body. This meditation begins by establishing a rhythmic inflow and outflow of the breath, in order to calm and collect the mind. Then continuing with the conscious breathing, we are guided through the body – bringing attention to sensations and space. This attention becomes a very vibrant living presence, and we end by experiencing that living presence as a natural openheartedness that includes all of life.
"A Sufi Way to Mindfulness and the Essential Self"
We spend great swaths of time in a trance that removes us from awareness of our body and senses. This meditation reconnects us by scanning through the body, including sounds and then resting in the field of awareness and aliveness. We practice relaxing and gently arriving again when thoughts carry us away; learning the pathway home to living presence.
Pastor David Frederickson teaches on the importance of living in the presence of the Lord.
Meditation: Refuge of Living Presence - Our thoughts keep us removed from this living world. This guided practice invites us to open and relax with the moment-to-moment experience of our senses. It includes a poem by Ingrid Goff-Maidoff, “Wherever you are, Find a Trail.”
Meditation: Living Presence with Body Scan - A key pathway to full presence is awakening through the body. This meditation guides us through a body scan, relaxing and receiving the play of sensations. We then deepen attention to the breath, and rest with the rhythmic waves of breathing, experiencing the background of the whole domain of physical aliveness.
The turning point is the realization that He is alive and we are filled with the Holy Spirit and surrounded in His Presence. This truth gives us a glorious awareness of God. Join Jamie Deering as she shares stories and considers with curiosity what it is to be present to oneself and others as we allow God to flow through us in the midst of different ways of thinking, seeing and being in the world. For a video version of this episode, see: https://youtu.be/PZ9MDBvRbe8 From Jamie's interview: “One of the first and primary ways that God grabbed a hold of me and that I knew the presence of God in me and in the world, was through music. When I was four years old, I began piano lessons and when I was in elementary school, there was a choir and I was so excited to be part of this, creating music with our bodies and with our souls, which has felt to me like a special portal, a special pathway to God. … The thread of music through my entire life is what has anchored me in knowing and experiencing God's presence.” “It was so important for me as my kids were growing up to be sure that they had this experience of the diversity of humankind and the diversity of thought and movement and ideas. … It was such a blessing and gift to be exposed to different ways of thinking, different ways of being in the world. I served in the Peace Corps, as you know, and lived in Macedonia for a little under two years. That plus my experiences in a variety of churches throughout my formative spiritual formation years was understanding the power of a community to form, to be so influential, in how our worldview, I'll stick with me, how my worldview was formed.” “Recently a friend of mine distinguished for me this word, interdependence, and we've been having conversations. We come from different cultures and so I've been curious about, again, the formation of this person coming, growing up in a different culture. And my growing up in the American culture, in sort of a spirit of independence; this other culture was a spirit of interdependence. I've been learning more about what that is and connecting that to all the experiences that I've had; they have been helpful in pointing me to what it means to be interdependent and communal in thinking.” “There are some things in contemplation we can do to set down striving; this concept of being with our thoughts then gets integrated in somatic presence with being in our bodies, being in my body. What is my body experiencing right now? Because our bodies live in present time. And so to the degree that I can be in my body, I can be present in present time. So there's that sense of being with. Then in spiritual direction, being with another, companioning another. Again, it's so important for me to be able to know what it is that's going on in me, physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, so that I can hold space. So I can offer that space to another person for them to be with whatever is going on in them.” “Haecceitas … this notion that we are all uniquely gifted by God for work here on earth for God. Presence in God through us, manifesting God through us in the world. I feel this mysterious, mystical, and special gift that my gifts now are partnered so beautifully with the Franciscan Sisters, and what might God be bringing into the world through us.” “There's an expression in contemplative prayer of the wellspring of love, the wellspring of God; that is probably the primary image that I use when I'm leading contemplation, because the wellspring is always available to us. Always. We just sit by the wellspring, contemplating the wellspring, being with the wellspring of love.” “Living life from a place of curiosity - I find that to be very Franciscan. And expanding beyond that, the spiritual journey, to live from curiosity. To be listeners seeking to understand another, is also very Franciscan, rather than be understood. …The wellspring cultivates curiosity and the ability to be with another and hold space for another's essence, to see another in their essence.” For a full transcript, please include episode number and email: fslfpodcast@fslf.org. God's presence has always been so holy, and worthy of reverence. In the Old Testament, His presence was housed in a particular place within the temple. In the New Testament, WE ARE THE TEMPLE, and His presence is housed within us---how amazing is that? Let's celebrate that and learn more as we study 1 Chronicles and Luke. Is it possible to come to know Spirit better through engaging deeply with the Hebrew Bible? Certainly, the long traditions of students in Judaic and Christian traditions suggest so. Rabbi Nahum Ward-Lev has long been a friend and teacher of mine. I am delighted to be able to bring his voice and wisdom to you. Our conversation is all about justice, love, and G*d's journey with his people, especially the Prophets, in the Old Testament. He recently wrote a beautiful book, The Liberating Path of the Hebrew Prophets: Then and Now. I encourage folks to buy it, especially anyone who is actively engaging with Old or New Testament, but also those who want to better understand a way that social justice is continually revealed as critical to the G*d of the Old Testament's relationship with his beloved People. This conversation starts with Rabbi Nahum's translation of the Hebrew word YHWH, (often translated into English as Jehovah) into "the Living Presence." This beautiful translation speaks to the continually becoming and dynamic nature of the Divine. We go from there into Genesis... and onwards. It is a rich conversation, shimmering with symbolic meaning for our times.Cover art used for this: An Imperfect Ally (Pharaoh's Daughter Adopts Moses)By Lisle Gwynn GarrityFollow Sara Jolena and Sequoia SamanvayaSequoia Samanvaya's WebsiteSequoia Samanvaya's Instagram Sequoia Samanvaya's Facebook Sequoia Samanvaya's LinkedInSara Jolena's LinkedInSupport the showLearn more about Sara Jolena Wolcott and Sequoia SamanvayaMusic Title: Both of Us Music by: madiRFAN Don't forget to "like" and share this episode!
Welcome back to Searching the Sacred. We are excited to launch into our second season by exploring Psalm 1! I'll be honest. As we get Season 2 off to a start, this first episode took a minute to find it's footing. But all the groundwork that was laid in the beginning made for a wonderful reflection and meditation on what seemed to be a simplistic poem. And this is the nature of poetry, sometimes it's a slow burn and takes a few attempts. "Delight in the way and direction of the Living Presence that was and is and always will be." Mysticism holds a fascination worldwide. Every major religion has a tradition of mystical experiences and individuals who are ultimately viewed as Mystics in their own right. However the institutionalization of the great religions has controlled just how much information would flow out regarding mysticism. Christianity before 1,500 CE. , in other words before the Reformation, was an immensely powerful institution. One cannot study European history without studying the Church which is the history of Europe. Yet hidden amongst the politics and the power struggles to control is a history of mystical tradition that in many ways is secretive. Yet it can boast a long-held mystical tradition, men and women who experience deeply personal encounters with the “Living Presence” of their God. However, such experiences have not always garnered positive responses. The heavily structured and patriarchal Church holds such personal mystical encounters suspect. Still, the wisdom gained through Christian mystical experience persists as offering valuable insights for the spiritual journey. This episode will look at the Christian mystical experience and relate it to the psychological and spiritual development of everyday men and women. Does the wisdom of the Christian mystical tradition have anything to teach us about ourselves? Join us Thursday at 8 PM for insights into the mystical traditions worth considering.

Jesus says, many Christians ignore one of the most fundamental promises I made during My Crucifixion where I would be present in Bread and Wine and leave a permanent mark to help nourish souls. Too much human reasoning has meant that I have been rejected by even well meaning Christians. These same Christians cannot receive the Holy Eucharist in its true form. The Most Holy Eucharist was given to you all as a great Gift for your redemption and salvation. By rejecting the fact that I am present means that you are forfeiting special graces, which are part of a pact to bring Me even closer into your hearts. Remember when I died for you it was to lead you to towards Eternal Life and salvation. Receive Me as the Living Presence and your souls will alight in ways you would not have believed possible.

The experience of the reality of God is the activating principle that underlies all faiths. It is the inner foundation upon which the outer edifice of the world's religions has been built. The prayers and rituals of the Yamim Noraim, the Days of Awe, that begin on Rosh Hashanah and reach their culmination on Yom Kippur - are structured to break us out of our mundane physical consciousness and lift us into the expansive awareness of the living presence of the Divine. Today our guest is Swami Prem Arpana. Arpana took sannyas in 1979 and is an artist and writer. Before taking sannyas Arpana was involved in local politics and was invited to be a candidate for the British Labour Party as a councillor, the first step in becoming an MP. After meeting Osho Arpana moved from a wildly extrovert life towards a hermit like existence. This is a very personal and intimate sharing from a sincere and authentic man. In this heart-to-heart conversation, Arpana talks about how taking sannyas and coming into contact with sannysins opened a new dimension in his life. Arpana’s first Dynamic Meditation gave him an experience of bliss and meeting Osho in person was pure silence. Through Osho, sannyas and meditation Arpana learnt some valuable lessons in real life: how to connect with elevating people, how to see beauty and light in every situation, and how to set clear boundaries.
