It's easy for us to take creation for granted. In other words, we get used to existing. It's good to step back and look at the miracle of our existence and to try and recognize God's purpose and intent for humanity. As Christ-followers, we are image-bearers for the divine and yet, at the same time, we are often plunged into the messiness of muddy situations in the church and in our own lives. Episode SummaryBarbara Brown Taylor is who you want to be when you grow up. Her life is a legacy of wisdom and wonder, walking the long road toward becoming fully human. In this intimate conversation that is more memoir than interview, she looks back on a long pilgrimage of faith while sharing some of the secrets she's found along the way. As she reminds us, “This is not the life I planned or the life I recommend to others. But it is the life that has turned out to be mind, and the central revelation in it for me—that the call to serve God is first and last the call to be fully human.” Along the way she shares what suffering and pain has taught her, and how life isn't so much about eliminating the bad but finding a balance between light and darkness, despair and hope. Together, we explore what it means to slow down and listen to your life, to embrace your humanity as you strive for the Divine. As favorite poet Mary Oliver wrote, “To live in this world you must be able to do three things. To love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.” I hope you will take the time to listen to your life, to see if for all the beauty and agony it brings as you too walk this long pilgrimage toward becoming fully human, fully divine. BioBarbara Brown Taylor is An American Episcopal priest, professor, and New York Times bestselling author who has dedicated her life to the pursuit of becoming fully human. Her most beloved works include An Altar in the World, Learning to Walk in the Dark, and Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others. She completed her undergraduate work at Emory University and went on to study at Yale Divinity School where she graduated in 1976. In 1996, she was named one of the twelve "most effective" preachers in the English-speaking world by Baylor University. She was awarded the 1998 Emory Medal by the Emory Alumni Association of Emory University for her distinguished achievement in education. She has been an Avon lady, a cocktail waitress, a horseback riding instructor, and a parish minister, but her favorite job was teaching world religions at Piedmont College for twenty years before putting the chalk down in 2017. She now divides her time between writing, speaking, and caring for the land on which she lives. Barbara and her husband Ed tend a small farm in the foothills of the Appalachians.Quotables“I was raised by parents who took me to libraries instead of churches.”“It took teaching world religions to realize Christianity was probably the most diverse, global tradition. And there are hundreds if not thousands of ways of being Christian.”“It's a wide, wide Christian world and I still identify that way…I'm the kind of Christian who will never be fully cooked.”“I'm clearly a person who believes what we most have in common is our humanity, not our religion.”“Jesus never told me to love my religion…If given the choice between loving my religion and loving my neighbor, I choose the neighbor.”“If we are made just a little lower than the Angels and made in the image of the Divine, it is quite something to be human.”“Both in Christian life and life universally, I keep meeting people who don't feel fully equipped yet to live their lives.” “If I'm going to love my neighbor, it is extremely important to ditch my stereotypes.”“We do a lot of judging one another by our yard signs, and I am so weary of that dichotomy.”“There was a time when my writing about Nature earned me a kind of outsider status of being pagan or pantheist.”“For the first time I began to see all the people my beloved tradition left out.”“Outsider status really ended up being like pilgrim status.”“As a mainline Episcopalian, what could be further from where most evangelicals started.”“I don't speak of the Christ, but I'm happy to talk about Jesus.”“I do believe the spirit of God lives in ALL that God has made.” “Darkness is the way of unknowing…It's the way you set your feet on when you don't know where you are going.”“You shed a lot of beliefs along the way as you acquire wisdom and experience and new friends.”“What darkness has taught me is that it is fine to slow down enough in the dark to feel my way instead of thinking my way forward.”“Suffering is not a spiritual practice I would choose, but it seems unavoidable.”“I think the hardest thing about suffering is the idea that we are alone in it.”“It's really helpful for people to look in their folders marked darkness and see what is in there and interrogate what is in there.”“There are a lot of things we wrestle with out of the public eye that we acquire the wisdom to speak about it IN the public eye.”“I think you just unearthed my primary faith statement which is, ‘I choose to believe the universe is for me and not against me.'”“I do wake up curious every day of my life, and I wake up attentive and with wonder.”“The time ahead is so much shorter than the time behind, so it's time to get serious about things.”“I think the Benedictines said every day keep your death before you. Not to make you a grim reaper but to make you aware of the preciousness of what you have.”If you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a rating and a review

Your First Vocation - Matthew Kelly Get Matthew's 60 Second Wisdom delivered to your inbox: https://www.matthewkelly.com/subscribeVideo Transcript:“The term vocation is most often used to refer to a calling from God to dedicate our lives to some specific state of life. In the conversation about vocations, we often lose sight of some very important points. Your first vocation is to be a human being. This is, was, and will always be the first call upon your life. And your ability to fulfill and enjoy every other vocation depends on how fully you embrace the call to flourish as a human being.  A mother, for example, if not first a mother or a wife, but a human being. Beautifully individual and wonderfully unique, her commitment to become more fully herself each day is what animates her other roles, vocations, and relationships. Yes, I said vocations, plural. I didn't misspeak. This mother has a vocation to be a human being, a vocation to marriage, and within that vocation may have a vocation to motherhood. Then one day one of her children may have a child and she will become a grandmother. This isn't just a joyful occasion and a new stage of life. Being a grandparent is a vocation. It is a call within a call. But all this rests on our passion for being fully alive and fully human! Our first vocation is to be human beings. It's an easy thing to forget.”If you have not read LIFE IS MESSY, order your copy today: https://amzn.to/2TTgZKn Subscribe to Matthew's YouTube Channel today! https://www.youtube.com/c/MatthewKellyAuthor/featured?sub_confirmation=1https://www.matthewkelly.comGet Matthew's 60 Second Wisdom delivered to your inbox: https://www.matthewkelly.com/subscribe The Best Version of Yourself and 60 Second Wisdom are registered trademarks.#MatthewKelly #BestVersionOfYourself #BestVersion #ThoughtLeader

Short answer: probably a few standalone episodes on movies and KSR short stories, followed by a deep dive into the forthcoming The Ministry for the Future, followed by our next big project. But first, a short hiatus while we solidify plans and the school year starts to start. We reflect on rebirth and retribution, teaching and learning, and finding yourself in a small community and a large world. We talk about how the characters, K and B especially, attempt to become fully human, locating themselves between the Great Man and Mass Movement models of history. And we discuss the book's fantastic and uncanny elements, and try to keep the melancholy of ending a book at bay. Stay tuned to the end to find out whether or not we recommend this book! For too many of us, our first foray into the world of spirituality comes after experiencing a deluge of unhappiness: depression, addiction, and all of the other destructive side effects that accompany a troubled mind. That was certainly how it all went down for our guest, Dr. Miles Neale – but a trip to India at the age of 20 and an introduction to Tibetan Buddhism changed the way he experienced the world, slowly but surely. Dr. Miles Neale is among the leading voices of the current generation of Buddhist teachers, a forerunner in the emerging field of contemplative psychotherapy, and the author of Gradual Awakening: The Tibetan Buddhist Path of Becoming Fully Human. For the last twenty years, he has trained in an authentic lineage of Tibetan Buddhism transmitted down from His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama to preeminent American Buddhist scholar Professor Robert Thurman to pioneering contemplative psychiatrist Dr. Joseph Loizzo. But Dr. Neale adds a unique twist to these teachings, combining them with traditional psychotherapy to create a reproducible curriculum that anyone can follow. Dr. Neale’s curriculum doesn’t result in a spontaneous, life-changing breakthrough. Instead, it offers something better: It offers us the ability to experience small, incremental breakthroughs that help us mature mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. There is no get-rich-quick scheme for a rich and fulfilling life – but it is possible for anyone to achieve.   Topics Discussed In This Episode: Dr. Neale grew up wealthy and unhappy – but that all changed after a transformative trip to India The epidemic of depression that’s faced our country and world for most of the modern age, and that keeps getting worse Combining Tibetan Buddhism with traditional psychotherapy to create something new entirely The critical importance of finding your mentors (for the vast majority of people) How the movement towards the use of psychedelics and psychotropics fits into the rubric of spontaneous enlightenment – and why this isn’t enough for a lasting transformation The idiot’s guide to Tibetan Buddhism Experiencing the state of radical altruism (and what it is) What you need to know about Lam Rim and the how the Dalai Lama lineage plays into it The spiritually destructive impact of modern materialism, an inherently nihilistic way of living that’s causing us to devolve and waste our life A comprehensive view of karma, both good and bad   More about this episode. Miles Neale is a prominent member of the current generation of Buddhist teachers, championing the emerging field of contemplative psychotherapy. With Sounds True, Miles has published Gradual Awakening: The Tibetan Buddhist Path of Becoming Fully Human. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon speaks with Miles about Lam Rim, the Tibetan Buddhist framework for moving into enlightened awakening step by measured step. They discuss the difference between gradually awakening and coming to enlightenment in a sudden burst, as well as the potential interplay between the two. Miles also leads Tami and the audience in a seven-step mentor bonding visualization that takes advantage of the mind's capacity to create a "flight simulator" for felt experience. Finally, Miles and Tami talk about the need to re-embrace religion and ritual in order to transcend the "cinderblock civilization" of materialism and nihilism. (69 minutes) Tami's Takeaway When Miles led us through a brief version of the mentor-bonding process that he teaches, I was surprised by who showed up in my mind's eye. It was not a spiritual mentor, business mentor, or a psychological guide, but someone who has recently begun helping me become physically fit. This underscored for me how many different dimensions there are to mentorship, as well as how important it is to be utterly open to receiving help from a surprising source.

We explore whether spirituality has become a necessary medicine for our current crises, what may help us wake up a sense of interconnectivity, and the dilemmas presented to us by the trend towards watered-down meditation practices, which he has termed “McMindfulness”. Miles presents us with the possibility that all human beings have the potential to awaken if they are willing to walk the gradual steps of the heroes journey.

Gradual Awakening with Miles Neale The world may be on the verge of global crisis. The economic, political, ecological and environmental landscapes are at the tipping point. Humanity appears confused and unaware in search of answers. As western culture embraces traditional practices favoured by many religious pursuits people jump on the trends of the likes of meditation and mindfulness yet equally sceptical of spiritual paths. In this conversation with Miles Neale, author of Gradual Awakening, we go beyond the surface and typical mindfulness talk into a deeper look at the current state of humanity. We explore the opportunities for humanity to experience an awakening - understanding mindfulness, wisdom and virtue as we attempt to overthrow of the nihilism, hedonism, and materialism that are threatening our planet.
