It's a Lions year, and Dan Cole and Ben Youngs have invited two-time captain Martin Johnson into the studio. He talks 1997's Living With Lions, his regrets over not winning the series in Australia in 2001, and why he still loves rugby as much as he ever did. There are stories from England's World Cup winning side, plus tips for you to use at any level. It's the best Martin Johnson interview you've heard in ages, even if he and Coley go on a 15 minute tangent about American Football. Lions are the apex predators of the African savanna, or what ecologists call - a keystone species. They play the critical role of managing large herbivore populations of impalas, zebras, buffalos, and even elephants and giraffes. In a balanced ecosystem, the number of herbivores needs to be kept in check because if you have too many herbivores, vegetation will be overgrazed and habitats will inevitably degrade. As an umbrella species, lions also help maintain a healthy and resilient herbivore population and regulate disease transmissions because they typically hunt and kill those that may be afflicted with parasites, disease or are feeble from a hereditary defect. Without lions, disease spread is more likely across species, and vast savanna grassland ecosystems would disintegrate into dysfunctional, barren landscapes impacting all other species, including humans. However, African lion populations are declining - due in large part to habitat loss due to development and human-wildlife conflict. With humans now living closer to predators like lions, having mitigation measures to reduce that conflict is growing in importance as these predators also pose a threat to the local communities and their livestock. On this episode of Climate Connections, Dr Jess Isden, Coexistence Coordinator, WildCRU - who is working very closely with the local communities through the Trans-Kalahari Predator Programme - shares her insights on how effective human-lion conflict mitigation strategies in Botswana, Africa, can contribute to sustainable development. On this week's podcast Cammy and John are joined by Bruce Aitchison from Happiness Is Eggshaped to take a look at the 1997 Living With Lions documentary. We take a look at a fascinating time for rugby with the amateur game giving way to professionalism which produced a unique tour the likes of which we will never see again. We discuss what lessons future Lions teams can learn from the tour, why McGeechan and Telfer are coaching GOATs as well as THAT speech. The documentary is available to purchase and download on Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Living-Lions-Sir-Ian-McGeechan/dp/B0733RZZSD Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/scottishrugbyblog. The protected Mountain lions in California live in highly fragmented habitats, where sport hunting is illegal. Yet lions are legally killed with depredation permits, easily obtained for killing pets or livestock. Audubon Canyon Ranch's Director of Living with Lions, Dr. Quinton Martins, leads community lion conservation programs in the North Bay. What we learn is, depredation isn't ‘problem lion' behavior, as all lions will take the opportunity to kill unsecured potential prey, therefore, removing the lion does not solve the problems. With a strong outreach program, Living with Lions educates locals and hobby farmers to be proactive in prevention of lion conflicts, using creative methods he devised while observing and conserving leopards in South Africa, that lead to zero depredation. Conservation solutions are about people. We have to do things differently, as coexisting with our iconic lions translates into maintaining functioning ecosystems, which is essential for us all.

“Award-winning wildlife expert, author and public speaker, Gareth Patterson, is known internationally for his efforts to protect the lions and elephants of Africa. His wildlife work has featured widely in the media, books and in documentaries.” Gareth has written extensively about his experience rewilding George Adamson's last lion cubs and subsequently written about his discovery of a viable population of elephants in the Knysna Forest. He continues to work to raise awareness and build passion for the wild with his recent children's' book “Born to be Free”, his upcoming project “Beyond the Secret Elephants” and his ongoing efforts to reignite African Environmentalism through Sekai Africa. We visited Gareth Patterson in his cottage on the edge of the beautiful Knysna Forest in South Africa and together with his beautiful bush dog, Tuli (you can hear her grunting and sniffling throughout), covered how Gareth became well-renowned lion man, working with George Adamson's lions, truly incredible stories about rewilding lion cubs, the remarkable story of the secret Knysna elephants in South Africa, Gareth's upcoming project, his new children's book, 'Born to be Free' and his vision for African Environmentalism. *This Episode is dedicated to Gareth's very special bush dog Tuli who sadly passed away shortly after this episode was recorded. You will be able to hear her joining in throughout this episode, making her presence known* ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Find the show notes here ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ *** SOCIALIZE WITH US *** Website Instagram Facebook Twitter YouTube
We dive into an article about the bardo, the void between death and rebirth, that is a part of the natural cycle of change that we experience repeatedly throughout life, and discuss what can come out of that place of letting go in order to experience rebirth. Tom Fordyce speaks to the people who made one of the greatest sports documentaries of all time. It's been twenty years since that Lions tour of South Africa so we've made a special podcast all about "Living with Lions".
Want something similar to a blessin'? Come on over, here's Episode Eleven! Our friends join up yet again to face the daunting challenge...listening to music and trying craft beer. This week, Jesse joyfully sits through Make Your Mark by Living with Lions and sipping a 120 Minute IPA from Dogfish Head, while Stephen seemingly tolerates They Want My Soul by Spoon and sipping a Peanut Butter Jelly Time Ale from Catawba Brewing. This episode gets goofy, as a number of as-of-yet-to-exist sponsors "make their mark" on a series of funny commercials. This is a recipe for pure joy. Cheers!
