Listen to the rest of this premium episode by subscribing at patreon.com/knowyourenemyWe wanted to offer something of a palette cleanser for our subscribers, so we decided to watch the recent movie, Reagan, with our intrepid producer, Jesse Brenneman. Even better, it's based on the 2006 book, The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism, by Paul Kengor—who just happens to have been Matt's close mentor as an undergraduate student. Reagan clocks in at over two hours and twenty minutes, and it's a wild, even fantastical ride that offers a revealing glimpse into the conservative psyche and a faithful rendition of the most hagiographic version of the Reagan mythology, especially his personal responsibility for ending the Cold War and finally putting the Soviet Union on the ash heap of history.Sources:Reagan (2024)Paul Kengor, The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism(2006)— God and Ronald Reagan: A Spiritual Life(2004)— A Pope and a President: John Paul II, Ronald Reagan, and the Extraordinary Untold Story of the 20th Century(2017)Edmund Morris, Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan (1999)

A 40-year-old Minnesota man, Matthew Scott Brenneman, has been sentenced to nearly 24 years in prison for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Danicka M. Bergeson, just days after being released from jail for previous assaults against her. Brenneman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Monday, with the Hennepin County Prosecutor's Office agreeing to drop first-degree murder charges in exchange. Brenneman admitted to two aggravating factors: killing Bergeson in a "zone of privacy" and treating her with "particular cruelty" by leaving her body to decompose. The sentence means Brenneman will likely serve just over 15 years in a state correctional facility. Under the plea agreement's terms, Brenneman would serve 23.75 years in a state correctional facility. Individuals convicted of felonies in Minnesota typically serve two-thirds of their sentence, which in this case would be just over 15 years. The Hennepin County Attorney, Mary Moriarty, emphasized the need for aggressive prosecution of domestic violence cases to ensure the safety of victims and survivors. “We were hoping for a plea with a much stronger sentence, you know, upwards, closer to the 30. But maybe some play in there. But, you know, we certainly thought that we could get stronger sentencing,” she said. “There's frustration with the way the system works. I mean, even if you're charged with first-degree murder, you only serve two-thirds of that, which is 20 years. And that in and of itself is a painful revelation.” Brenneman had only been released from jail on June 27, 2023, after pleading guilty to attacking Bergeson in April and May, when he punched, bit, and choked her in their home — and threatened to kill her. Under his guilty plea in that case, prosecutors agreed “to no additional time” in jail if Brenneman did not violate a no-contact order — but two days later, according to cell phone records, he was near their apartment. On July 8, 2023, officers from the Hopkins Police Department were called to an apartment complex after a downstairs neighbor reported yelling and banging from the unit above. Upon entering the apartment, police found Brenneman in the bathroom, where they detected a strong smell of bleach; he had ingested it in a suicide attempt. He was subsequently arrested at the scene. Bergeson was discovered lying in her bed, wrapped in blankets and a plastic garbage bag, with numerous abrasions and bruises. Authorities believe she had been dead for at least a day. Investigators also recovered a series of notes that were written by Brenneman, including an apology and what appeared to be a confession. Bergeson's family expressed frustration with the sentencing, hoping for a longer term. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Ever wondered how to unlock the algebraic potential in young minds? Look no further, as we've tapped into the expertise of Rebecca Brenneman, a seasoned 7th-grade math teacher from Maryland, who's got the playbook for priming middle schoolers for the world of algebra. Rebecca's approach emphasizes a rock-solid number sense and the art of breaking down complex problems into bite-sized, manageable chunks—skills that are essential for setting the stage for variables and abstract algebraic concepts. Her discussion on the power of pattern recognition, rational number operations, and viewing equations as balances offers a fresh perspective on equation solving that both novices and veteran educators can appreciate.Read Curriculum Associates' blog: CurriculumAssociates.com/blogFollow us on Twitter: @CurriculumAssocFollow us on Instagram: @MyiReadyHave feedback, questions, or want to be a guest? In episode 212, Prep Dish founder Allison Schaaf welcomes author Kim Brenneman to the Meal Prep Monday Podcast where she shares how she went from a new mom struggling to manage her home rhythms to a thriving homeschooling mother of nine with routines that keep home and farm life humming along. Kim is the author of Home Management Plain and Simple and founder of The Home Management: Plain and Simple Blueprint Course. She lives in Iowa on a farm and is a wife of 33 years and a homeschooling mom of nine children. Kim realized she'd grown up with the advantage of having outside systems manage her life through school, college, and her employment. She'd never truly had to be the boss of her own life until she was an adult starting a family. Her book started as a blog in 2004, where Kim began documenting all the systems she was creating to manage her home, as more children were added to the family, the farming business grew, and homeschooling became a part of her day-to-day life. Kim's home management system is based on getting a strong evening rhythm established first, to set up your morning of the next day for success. She notes that the evening rhythm consists of a kitchen routine and a personal routine, and that these will be personalized to you to set up what's needed for the morning. The kitchen routine involves cleaning and tidying from the previous meal, and can be personalized by setting up what you'll consume in the morning, such as coffee or tea, or prep-ahead breakfast items that can be set up the evening before. The personal routine includes what you do to get yourself ready for bed and how you'll wind down your evening, perhaps with a book or a bath. Getting the kids involved with mealtime and chores has been an important part of Kim's home management strategy, and she details some additional tips about setting the tone for different parts of the day and having the kids contribute to these household tasks. But his most famous, or at least memorable, role probably was his five-episode arc in season four of Seinfeld as "Crazy" Joe Davola, a struggling writer who becomes obsessed with Elaine and believes Jerry is sabotaging his career. The "Crazy" Joe Davola episodes come at a major turning point in Seinfeld's nine seasons. The grittier, nearly vanished working-class New York City that's depicted in its earliest episodes, filled with dingy laundromats, struggling actors, immigrant relatives, and people who are literally poor, begins to drop out of view as Jerry's career takes off and the settings, references, and concerns of the show becomes more absurd and removed from the day to day life of ordinary people in Manhattan and beyond.Using the death of Peter Crombie as the thinnest of excuses to do an episode on the politics of Seinfeld, Matt was joined by KYE producer Jesse Brenneman and historian Gabe Winant to explain its "Jewish humor"; how the class politics of New York City in the 70s and 80s informed the show; the deeper meaning of its many references to dictators, Nazis, communists, and others; the Dinkins vs. Giuliani race for mayor; and more!

In the middle of the 20th century, some of America's biggest companies made a habit of staging Broadway-quality musicals simply to hype up their employees. The documentary BATHTUBS OVER BROADWAY (2018) chronicles the obsession that David Letterman's writer Steve Young developed with the arcane genre of the "industrial musical." Will is joined by special guest host Jesse Brenneman to discuss the film, and to hash over their experiences collecting really, really, really niche interests. The life of 33-year-old Danicka Bergeson came to a tragic end in her Hopkins, Minnesota, home on July 8, when she was found dead, wrapped in layers of blankets. Nearly two months after her demise, her boyfriend, 39-year-old Matthew Brenneman, is facing serious charges, including second-degree murder and second-degree murder while under a restraining order. The status of his plea or whether he has retained legal counsel remains unclear. The discovery of Danicka's body was prompted by her building manager, who reported hearing "groaning, yelling, and banging" sounds coming from her apartment. Responding officers found Brenneman inside the bathroom, "grunting, and growling," and reeking of bleach, as detailed in the complaint filed. Danicka's father, David Bergeson, expressed his grief to KARE11, remembering his daughter as a vivacious woman with a strong moral code. "Everything with her was always black or white. She knew exactly what was right and wrong," he said. Nancy Andrews, a close friend of Danicka, echoed similar sentiments on her obituary page, noting her infectious smile, compassion for animals, and a passion for learning. The complaint outlines a timeline of events that led to the discovery of Bergeson's body. Concerns for her safety were first raised by friends and family on July 2. On July 7, a message sent from Bergeson's phone to her mother raised further suspicions, as it did not sound like something she would say. Phone records indicate that Brenneman was near Bergeson's residence on June 29, only two days after being released from jail for a prior assault on her. At that time, a restraining order against him was active. The complaint goes on to document a history of violence between the couple, with multiple alleged incidents of assault, including biting and punching. Following an attack in April, Brenneman reportedly texted a friend, claiming he gave Bergeson a black eye and that she "deserved it, if any woman ever has." During the investigation, police found what appeared to be bloody clothing in a guest bedroom of the apartment. Additionally, Brenneman left a series of notes throughout the apartment, proclaiming his innocence and denying ever being physically abusive to a woman. However, this claim was contradicted by the mother of Brenneman's child, who alleged that he had pinned her to the bed and hit her on one occasion. Currently, Brenneman is being held under a $1,500,000 bail for each murder charge. Despite the autopsy revealing numerous wounds on Bergeson's body, the nature of her death was classified as "undetermined." In the aftermath of this tragic incident, a fundraiser has been organized to assist Bergeson's family with funeral expenses. The case of Danicka Bergeson underscores the pervasive and persistent issue of domestic violence that afflicts individuals and families worldwide. It is of paramount importance to offer support to victims and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? This episode is a little different. Rather than dissecting an influential conservative book written by long-dead intellectual, Matt and Sam are joined by Know Your Enemy's brilliant producer (and host of the very funny podcast, Tech Talk) to unpack a different kind of "text"—the hit CBS television show from the 1990s, Walker, Texas Ranger, starring the very much still-living Chuck Norris. Set in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Norris stars as Sergeant Cordell Walker, a member of the storied Texas Rangers who takes on drug dealers, Satanists, corrupt cops, and other bad guys, a task aided by his incredible martial-arts skills. The episodes of Walker discussed in this conversation were carefully curated by Jesse, and they provide a great deal of fodder for understanding conservatism (and America) in the 1990s, law and order politics, the American penchant for moral panics, how the Right has changed in the decades since the show aired, and more.Sources:Walker, Texas Ranger on IMDB"Chuck Norris's code of honor," drawn from the Chuck Norris System of martial arts (Chun Kuk Do)Chuck Norris, Black Belt Patriotism: How to Reawaken America (2008)Aaron Cantú, The Chaparral Insurgents of South Texas,The New Inquiry, April 2016. ...and don't forget to subscribe to Know Your Enemy on Patreon for access to all of our bonus episodes!
