John Sutherland joined the Met Police in 1992 after receiving the baton of honour, presented to the outstanding student during an officer's basic training. He quickly rose through the ranks and as it says on the back cover of his first book 'Blue', experienced all that is extraordinary about a life in blue: saving lives, finding the lost, comforting the broken and helping taking the dangerous people off the streets. With the highs came the lows and in 2013 John suffered a major nervous breakdown and we talk about and how he's managed to wrestle control back, later in the podcast.A third book and his first in the fiction category 'The Siege' is on its way, straddling his second book 'Crossing The Line' and before getting into subjects like hostage negotiation, the art of listening and the reason for becoming a policeman in the first place, we spoke about why he started writing and the routines around that.Show Notes: Jose Mourinho - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_MourinhoJurgen Klopp - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%BCrgen_Klopp‘Blue' book - https://amzn.to/3r2qSCY‘Crossing The Line' book - https://amzn.to/3r5ceL7'The Siege' book - https://policecommander.wordpress.com/the-siege/Ben's book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1474608272/Tom Fordyce - https://twitter.com/tomfordyce?lang=enJim Kwik's book ‘Limitless' - https://amzn.to/37neYN6Damascus Road - https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/road+to+DamascusHammersmith Broadway -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammersmith_BroadwayLancashire Police - https://www.lancashire.police.uk/Ben's Olympic Gold Medal - https://www.sportsjoe.ie/rugby/ben-ryan-fiji-olympic-sevens-rugby-187712The Shawshank Redemption Film - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmzuHjWmXOcAndy Millburn Podcast Episode - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216?i=1000552662688Boston Consultancy Group - https://www.bcg.com/en-gb/Dog Day Afternoon Film - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3STmwLDDBcIPhil Williams Head of Scotland Yard Hostage Unit - https://www.linkedin.com/in/philip-williams-30242363/?originalSubdomain=ukChinese Symbol For Listening - https://rwwleadership.wordpress.com/2014/01/19/the-chinese-symbol-for-listening/ More About John Sutherland:Website - https://policecommander.wordpress.com/about/Media Agency - https://greeneheaton.co.uk/clients/john-sutherland/Twitter - @policecommander‘Blue' book on Amazon - https://amzn.to/3r2qSCY‘Crossing The Line' book on Amazon - https://amzn.to/3r5ceL7'The Siege' book - https://policecommander.wordpress.com/the-siege/YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibl3M4dTF2ULinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-sutherland-61994992/?originalSubdomain=ukListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben's Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmSocial:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Welcome back to the podcast where this week I take a look back over series one with the help of my partner, TV presenter Michelle Ackerley. Welcome to my new podcast where each week I’ll be joined by leading coaches, athletes and educators from the world of sport and far beyond. On each episode I’ll go through my guests journey, their stories and compare with my own experiences coaching at the elite level, to pull out some greats tips and useful advice around all things performance and that often mentioned, but misunderstood word, culture. Currently I consult with some of the biggest sporting and corporate organisations in the world from Premier League Football teams to American Sporting institutions, but I’m probably best known for coaching the Fiji national rugby sevens team to world titles and the country’s first ever Olympic medal, a gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Of course I’ll draw on that amazing journey but also on the lessons I’ve learnt and the principles I’ve forged over the last 20 years working in professional sport - and that’s really what inspired me to star this podcast. I wanted to swap notes, glean tips and talk performance with some some amazing people. Writer and broadcaster Tom Fordyce is my first guest. We actually went to Cambridge University at the same time, but it wasn’t until my role coaching the England Rugby sevens team that our paths properly crossed. Tom was working as BBC Chief Sports writer, a job that he held for over 20 years and we’ve been friends ever since. Currently he stars in the extremely popular Peter Crouch Podcast and has now set up his own podcast network (https://crowdnetwork.co.uk) which includes shows like Death of a Sports Star, Death of a Rock Star and new show, We Didn’t Start The Fire - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/we-didnt-start-the-fire/id1549243765. Tom actually ghost-wrote my book, Sevens Heaven and he’s also written many other great sports biographies. As I’ve said, in future weeks I’ll be joined by guests to find the signals that have propelled their own careers, but for this episode, Tom was good enough to help me explore some of the subjects that will come up over the course of this programme, from star players, enjoyment, managing egos, my concept of guardrails, experience, culture, use of technology and much, much more. I am a fan of the end-of-the-year, double-size issues of magazines–full of photographs, lists of the best and worst of the year, notable quotes, and vignettes about the year’s events. This week’s podcast follows in the spirit of those year-end special issues. The episode is thicker than usual, but it is full of colorful observations, reflective commentary, and expert recommendations on the best recent sports books. We call this final podcast of 2011–the Special Year-End Book List. Instead of a single author talking about a new book, we have a variety of guests offering their views on the year in sports and their choices of favorite books. The suggestions come from a range of sports commentators, in the US, the UK, and beyond. We welcome back to the podcast sports historians Kurt Kemper and Tony Collins as well as New York Times writer Don Van Natta. We hear from a Fulbright-winning doctoral student working in sports history, Shay Wood. The episode features the BBC’s Tom Fordyce and Sean Wheelock of the World Football Phone In; the editor in chief of Baseball Prospectus, Steven Goldman; and Atlanta-based sports journalist Wendy Parker. We get recommendations from E, author of the hockey blog A Theory of Ice, and Supriya Nair, contributor to the soccer blog The Run of Play. And offering his views on the significant recent events in American sports is Robert Lipsyte, longtime sports columnist and writer for the New York Times. Our guests have suggestions for books, new and old, in baseball, football, hockey, soccer, cycling, boxing, and host of other topics related to sports. If you are still making your shopping list, or writing your letter to Santa Claus, or simply looking forward to a gift card from that certain online retailer named after a South American river, this episode will have plenty of good ideas for you.New Books in Sports is then going on holiday for the rest of the season. Look for new episodes in January 2012, when we will discuss recent books on Canadian hockey, Japanese sumo, American owners of English football clubs, and the philosophy of being a sports fan.
