Polar Bear Club was a post-hardcore/melodic punk band from upstate New York. They were active mostly from the mid-2000s to around 2015. Their sound was a mix of gruff, emotional vocals with melodic yet aggressive instrumentals. They released albums on Triple Crown Records, Bridge Nine Records and Rise Records. And toured with such bands as The Gaslight Anthem, Set Your Goals, Four Year Strong, Every Time I Die, The Bouncing Souls, Bad Religion, The Story So Far, Citizen, New Found Glory and Taking Back Sunday. I got Jimmy on the Skype and this is what we chat about: His band The Disaster 2 things that kickstarted them to tour Red Leader Records and Matt Rosenberg As 'Twere the Mirror Member changes Clash Battle Guilt Pride Bad tours His voice changing on the last record Audiotree How the band ended Will there be a reunion And a ton more Check out his new band Shy Tooth on Spotify and all the platforms Lastly I do whiteboard animations so if your marketing department has said recently “Hey, we need a whiteboard animation” then email me at mike@drive80.com.
As 2024 comes to a close, we wanted to share with you an episode that we produced all the way back in 2020. That year, we went to Coney Island to record the Coney Island Polar Bear Club, the group of swimmers that congregate on Coney Island every Sunday in winter to swim in the frigid ocean as a way to renew themselves. It's a fun one, and we hope you enjoy!Further resources:Look at historic photos of the Polar Bear Club and Coney Island.Take the plunge with the Polar Bear Club this New Year's Day.Help us shape our next podcast series! It's winter where we are. What are the coldest, most teeth-chattering, brrrr-iest of all the 100 sanctioned Burning Man events around the world?FrostBurn is one, and its participants make it happen in the dead of winter on purpose, annually since 2008. Subzero temperatures, rain, sleet, snow and sometimes sunshine. Why? Because they can.It kinda makes the media look silly for making a big deal out of a little rain at Black Rock City. When the costumes are nothing less than comfy snow pants, when everyone is on the buddy system to ensure they survive the weather, no energy is wasted on facades and FOMO. For Episode 97 I'm joined by Chris Browne. Anyone who has been listening to this podcast over the last two and a half years will likely be familiar with the bands Chris has been in. These bands include The Breaking Project, Tamiroff, Achilles, and Polar Bear Club. We discuss most of these bands in depth, while also talking about how strong of an influence the Rochester Hardcore scene was for Chris growing up. I'll probably try to get Chris on again in the future to discuss some of his bands and experiences with them a little more. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/enterprise-hardcore-podcast/support
For Episode 95 I had a chat with Max Quattrociocchi about his time in the Rochester scene. We go from his early years playing in Bema, to playing in more recent bands like The Curl and Drag and Coming Down. We also talk about his experiences touring with Achilles and Polar Bear Club. Coming Down are playing at the Bug Jar with a ton of bands from Rochester, Syracuse, and Buffalo on November 12. https://www.patreon.com/EnterpriseHardcorePodcast https://www.instagram.com/enterprisehardcorepodcast https://www.facebook.com/EnterpriseHardcorePodcast https://mobile.twitter.com/podcasthardcore --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/enterprise-hardcore-podcast/support

Episode 86 features my first Australian guest. While he's originally from Australia and lives there currently, most of my listeners will likely remember him from his time in Rochester. Matt played drums for To Fester Within, The Breaking Project, The Avram, and No Sweat, all while he was in high school. We talked quite a bit about him playing in these bands and the many bonds he formed through them. Towards the peak of The Breaking Project and The Avram Matt realized his family was moving back to Australia. We talk about what it was like moving back there and what he's been up to there. He also talks about some pretty fun experiences touring with Polar Bear Club while they were over there. All the bands that Matt played in have songs available to listen to on the Rochester Hardcore History SoundCloud. I'm including the link in the show notes. https://www.gofundme.com/f/enterprise-hardcore-podcast-video-equipment https://www.patreon.com/EnterpriseHardcorePodcast https://www.instagram.com/enterprisehardcorepodcast https://www.facebook.com/EnterpriseHardcorePodcast https://mobile.twitter.com/podcasthardcore https://m.soundcloud.com/rochesterhardcorehistory --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/enterprise-hardcore-podcast/support

One of the main reasons I started this podcast was to document how great the Rochester Harcore scene was in the early 2000s. Many great bands have come since then, but a lot of the foundation was built for those bands 20-25 years ago. In addition to all of the diverse bands that were being created in Rochester, there were also quite a few out of town bands that built a following here and helped influence our city's sound. During this time, Jimmy Stadt became heavily involved with our scene. We discuss most of the bands he was in, as well as a lot of the bands that became part of our scene even though they weren't from here. Most people listening to the episode are probably familiar with Polar Bear Club. We also talk about Jimmy's earlier bands (Fedde, The Avram, and Tamiroff), as well as more recent ones (Shy Tooth and Bad Bloom). One thing that we also made a point to discuss in detail was how important our local venues have been over the years. With respect to the other people I have interviewed, this was probably the easiest interview I have ever done. A lot of times I didn't even have to ask a follow up question. There's a lot I learned from my conversation with Jimmy. I highly recommend this episode to anyone who has aspirations of being in a serious band. Jimmy also started an online movie club last year where a big group of people chat about movies on discord. I will include the link for that as well as info on Shy Tooth below. On this episode I chat to Jimmy Stadt from Polar Bear Club & now a new band called Shy Tooth. This conversation means a whole lot to me, PBC were a band that inspired and captivated me like few others and I was incredibly gutted when they chose to call it a day. If you'd have told me 10 years ago I'd be chatting to Jimmy about films, music and marketing ... I'd have probably pooped my pants and been too anxious to even consider to idea. Support the show (https://ko-fi.com/miztrujillo)Shy Tooth have a new record coming out called 'Ultrasuede' and I couldn't be more excited!!! The single they've already released from it; 'Too Kind', is an absolute banger; as is the EP 'wavelengths' they released last year. Composed of members of Polar Bear Club, Marathon, Coming Down, Like Wolves and Green Dreams, you know you have to be excited. On the show Jimmy describes it like a super amped up Elvis Costello and I'm not going to argue with that, all I know is, it's bloody gorgeous and I wan't more. We also talk a bunch about films and the film club noYOUgo which Jimmy set up. I've joined but haven't had the pleasure to get involved yet (podcast duties and stuff). Links underneath if you're into the idea as much as I am!! It was an absolute pleasure getting to chat to Jimmy and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity. My good friend and fellow filmmaker, Ben Zschunke, came on Projecting! His new amazing feature film, The Polar Bear Club, which he produced/script supervised/co-wrote/etc. (too many roles to count!), just had its world premier in Nashville, TN. Check it out, follow his work, and enjoy our chat about The Polar Bear Club, our trip to Tennessee, and a bit about our current projects!
Topics include: the Paramore and Copeland tour wrapping up, the Mad Men finale, how music die-hards should tackle getting getting into huge "classic" catalogs, and do pieces from reviewers about the classics help kickstart that process? Then we talk about how Jason found a whole bunch of old reviews in the archives and debate what he should do with them. Is it ok to make edits? Is it ok to keep them and let them just fade away? What about a director's commentary version? How does reflecting on and reading your past writing influence your current and future writing? We end with a news lightning round covering Rise Records being sold, Fireworks and Polar Bear Club going on hiatus, and NFG and YC going on tour.
