The Smokejumper Strategy for Guitar

Transcript included below…Today I'm going to provide a strategy that just might sharpen your approach to playing any song you work onToday's episode will be one of the shortest you'll experience here, because I want to get right to the point. And I'm going to use an analogy, like I enjoy doing from time to time.Several years ago, I was performing at a big festival, and one of the ladies who was serving the food to the musicians told me about her career.  It was an unexpected revelation.  She was a smokejumper. Now, if you know what a smokejumper is, great!  If you don't, it's basically a firefighter who drops into a forest fire by way of a parachute.  I would think that starting at the edge of the fire would be sufficient, but smokejumpers have been able to strategically drop in and drastically reduce the fire damage more quickly, because they target specific spots. It doesn't make things any easier; in fact, it's considerably more dangerous.  Just imagine it, right?Well, let's take a piece of music for a moment – it could be a fingerstyle guitar solo in an alternate tuning with lots of ties across the bar line…or it could be a pretty standard worship song in 4/4 time with “Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus, Chorus” song form.Really, the type of song does not matter for my point of illustration.  And the level of difficulty doesn't matter, either. What does matter is the strategic approach to tackling the song. How many of us have heard someone play a song (especially a difficult one) from the beginning, and listened as the song gradually fell apart?Lots of us.Why would this be, you ask?  Perhaps because the person who had practiced it employed the approach, when running into challenges, of going back to the beginning and starting over. Now I'm not at all against playing from the beginning. But if it's the rule, not the exception, I have another suggestion…and hear it is.  You ready?Find the challenge spot and work on that.Literally jump into the middle of the piece and work the section that needs the most help. This might feel natural, because it might be right at the chorus.Or maybe it will be in the middle of a measure.  Or the latter half of a beat. You'll know, because you'll be able to target the point in the music that needs work, and you can approach it from the nearest point of entry. If you're in a worship team rehearsal, guide your band to a spot you can all find (e.g. pick-up to measure 9.) If you're on your own, you'll have a little more flexibility and can find a spot at a gentler pace. But do me (and yourself) this favor: avoid the temptation to go back to the beginning over and over.It will save time, it will allow you to get to know the piece better overall, and it will enable you to solidify the more difficult sections more quickly. In short, it will help you put out the fire effectively…like a smokejumper.Make sense? Conclusion and Next StepsAnd that just about wraps things up for today.  Yep, I wanted to keep things succinct for today's episode, because sometimes, all it takes is a simple thought to get you on your way.And if you want more simple thoughts, find us on social media on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook where GuitarSuccess4U has a presence in each.  Some of our content appears in all three areas, and it includes short-form content like reels or shorts that are less than 60 seconds long. Little nuggets of wisdom, encouragement and practical thoughts. It's been interesting to watch and see who responds more to what on Instagram, Facebook or YouTube, based on the audience. But if you're looking for the real meat, the real feast, treat yourself to GuitarSuccess4U, a members-only experience for Christian guitarists who know there's more to the guitar and music. If today's analogy and thoughts gave you something to run with, just imagine what a proven 6-stage Success Path and 8 bonus guest expert interviews could do, to say nothing of the Christ-honoring community of what I call my “Guitar Successors.”We'd love to welcome you in.Learn more and join now at GuitarSuccess4U.com.And if you want to experience our new free guitar web masterclass, just include a forward slash and the word “formula” after that.  So, the URL would be GuitarSuccess4U.com/formula.  I can't wait to see what the Lord does for you with this new Smokejumper Strategy, and I hope to serve you inside GuitarSuccess4U!Thanks for experiencing these thoughts, and I'll see you next time! Thanks for reading Guitar Serious Fun! Wildland firefighters are a unique bunch... Especially when it comes to the culture, and how we interact with "outsiders", our mission, and with each other...That's why we have Matt Carroll and Jody Jahn on the show today to talk, more in depth, about the "Deep Dive" project by the USFS and how it can reveal some insights about why we make the decisions that we do...About Matt: "Matt Carroll works as an Organizational Learning Ambassador with the USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station's Office of Innovation and Organizational Learning (IOL). His focus is on piloting forward-looking learning projects in and beyond the physical safety realm using the practices and philosophies developed in the Facilitated Learning Analysis (FLA) process. Currently he is imbedded with the Forest Service's Work Environment and Performance Office (WEPO) to build capacity for learning in the anti-harassment program.Prior to his role as a Learning Ambassador, he worked for three years at Acadia National Park as the Interagency Zone, Assistant Fire Management Officer (AFMO) for the North Country Interagency Fire Program, responsible for the 37 U.S. Fish and Wildlife and 22 National Park units within the 6 New England states.Over half of Matt's career was spent as a primary wildland firefighter. He began in 2000 working on the Baker River Interagency Hotshot Crew out of western Washington. He then spent 11 years as a Smokejumper with the McCall Smokejumpers based out of Idaho. Concurrent with his time as a firefighter he took on a number of detail assignments including to the Wilderness and Wild and Scenic Rivers program at the Washington Office, as the R4 Fire and Aviation Management Diversity Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator (FAMDORC), on an R5 team developing a region-wide assessment to inform forest level plan revisions, and with the Forest Service's International Program (IP) in Brazil andPeru to develop methods and curricula for teaching wildland fire suppression and chainsaw safety to a wide range of local actors including settlers, indigenous communities and ranchers.Matt's academic background is a mix of biophysical and social science at community centered schools with interdisciplinary curricula including an Associate's degree from Paul Smith's College, a Bachelor of Arts from College of the Atlantic and a Master's of Forestry from Yale's School of Forestry and Environmental Studies."About Jody Jahn (Researcher, CU Boulder): " Jody Jahn, PhD: Jody is an associate professor of Organizational Communication at University of Colorado Boulder. Her research looks at how wildland firefighters learn about hazards through integrating codified knowledge (e.g., 10 & 18, safety documents) with their embodied experience. This research program builds from 8 seasons of wildland firefighting and two seasons of work in Antarctica. Both of these folks are some heavy hitters on why we make the decisions that we do on the line... And they are determined to make it a safer, more efficient, and more inclusive environment for future generations of wildland firefighters. To participate in the "Deep Dive" project, check out the following link:USFS Deep Dive ProjectTo get ahold of Matt Carroll, check out this link if you have any questions:Matt Carroll, USFSYou know the drill...Stay safe, stay savage...Enjoy!------------------The Anchor Point Podcast is supported by the following wonderful folks...Mystery RanchNeed badass packs? They are America's most select elite airborne firefighters tasked with putting out fires before they are out of control They are the first line of defense. These men are willing to risk their lives to battle these deadly infernos. The only caveat is they do not arrive to the scene in a bright red firetruck, they halo into the fire! Smokejumpers fight fires in the most remote and rugged terrain all over the U.S. I hope that this episode was able to describe a portion of bravery these men display on a daily basis. When Jason was told, he was too small and weak to become a Smokejumper, he did not buckle or walk away from his dream. Learn how to fought to become one of America's most elite! Jason is the author of "Smokejumper A Memoir By One Of America's Most Select Airborne Firefighters." He is an advocate the first responders and has been on the TedX stage sharing his experiences. Firestorm, which is essentially Die Hard set amidst a forest fire, is as bad as you'd expect a movie that stars an ex-NFL player to be. That said, it's still dumb fun, and it is anchored by another deliciously evil turn from William Forsythe. He plays Shaye—an escaped convict who engineered the fire, so he could reclaim his stashed millions. Unfortunately for him, these are Jesse Graves' woods! Jesse, played as varying degrees of confused by Howie Long, can throw axes super well and knows his way around an inferno. Thus, there is only one possible way for their showdown to end—with Shaye's head melted by the smoldering heat. No, seriously, that happens. The lunacy of this film's premise is probably why it tanked financially. It grossed just $8.16 million on a budget of $30 million. Critics took a torch to it, too. With 26 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, it sits at 12%. I mean, this isn't high art, but it feels wrong to burn poor Howie like that. Anyway, sit back, inhale a few Ax Man Doubled Bladed IPAs from Surly Brewing, and hurl a chainsaw at a moving car! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are smoke-jumping into the blaze to bring down some convicts posing as Canadians! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Any firefighter knows that fire moves faster going uphill, and going up a hill in a fire is a good way to get trapped! If you haven't seen the new "fire" movie, "Two Yellow Lines" - You need to stop what you're doing, and watch it...This isn't necessarily a "fire" movie in the context of actual "firefighting", but more along the lines of the inconvenient truths about the mental health components that can be associated with a fire career... The most incredible part of this film? It tells a vivid story of what wildland firefighters experience, without showing a SINGLE scene of "Hollywood-ized hero complex" firefighting...The story revolves around a Smokejumper who was involved with a tragedy fire, the PTSI as a result of the incident, his estranged daughter, and the long journey to recovery and healing. This is why we have the producer, writer, and lead actor, Zac Titus, on the show today to give us the breakdown of the film that is making waves across the fire community!Take a listen to this episode, then watch the film - Or watch the film and then listen to this episode... Equilus Group, Inc is a Registered Investment Advisory Firm in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Equilus Group, Inc- Building Your Financial Success. Learn more at Equilusfinancial.com. Member SIPC and FINRA. (same message all week)  Also, as the pandemic, civil unrest and dark winter days continue into the new year, Wenatchee Valley residents are reporting more feelings of anxiety, sadness, isolation and discouragement. That's why we at The Wenatchee World and NABUR have organized a free, interactive mental health panel. Join us on Thursday January 21st from 6 to 8pm, and make sure to RSVP at wwrld.us/mentalhealthpanel. The water temperature is 44 degrees. The air temperature is 43. There is snow on the foothills. Five people are walking across a sandbar that juts into the Columbia River off Walla Walla Point Park. Swimmers. It's the first winter dip for two of the swimmers. One of them is Sheila Borden, a 44-year-old Wenatchee woman. Sheila is nervous, she doesn't really like being cold. A big, furry hat tops off her full-body wetsuit.  13 year old Marieka Campbell shivers and says “I'm so cold; I hate doing this but my mom says it's good for you.” The other three are veterans. 50 year old Sarah Applegate, Marieka's mother, heads into a crawl stroke and says - this is awesome. Back in October 70 year old Charlene Woodward started a Facebook group. It's called Wild Wenatchee Swimmers. Right now, membership is at about 45 people with 12 active members. Many of them swim at 11 a.m. every Saturday at the sandbar; while others take dips in the river off Kirby Billingsley Hydro Park and Lincoln Rock State Park during the week. Woodward, after offering encouragement to all, heads right in and starts a 10-minute swim parallel to the beach with another veteran, Kathy Gavin. Woodward grew up as a competitive swimmer and went on to coach and teach swimming. She and her husband own Dogwise, a mail-order bookseller and publisher of books on dogs.  She says that this is ridiculous that we are doing this, but, for her, it's something to do during the pandemic that is safe. They wear masks until they get to the river and they don't get close together. Woodward has read about the health benefits of cold-water swimming and feels she experiences them. Afterwards she feels energized, and it lasts pretty well all day. Her tip for beginners? Stay in for less time than you think you can. This is not an endurance contest; it's not a macho thing. Get out and dry off and warm up as soon as possible.   And stick with it. She said she's 70 and she hopes that she's doing this until she's 90. Kelly Anderson, another regular swimmer, always wanted to try a polar bear plunge but kept chickening out. Anderson describes herself as a person who hates cold water - so to her, this felt like a big personal challenge. When a friend showed her the Wild Wenatchee Swimmers Facebook page, she was intrigued. And when she showed up in the parking lot for her first swim, she felt super-supported by these strangers! Anderson is a cancer survivor and also suffers from nerve problems, a bad back and chronic depression. After about a week with the Wild Wenatchee Swimmers, she said that she was down to 70% reduced pain in my back, hips and neck. Then, she started having pain-free days. She even texted a friend and said she just felt so happy for no apparent reason, and can only say that's the swimming! Now, Few are brave enough to fly 10,000 feet in the air, and parachute jump out into an unknown forest only to touch land and fight a raging forest fire.  For longtime Wenatchee resident and author Gene Jessup, it was just another day on the job. Jessup was a smokejumper for the North Cascades Smokejumper Base in the late 1950s and ‘60s.  A smokejumper is a trained firefighter who provides rapid fire response by parachuting to the source of the fire, usually in the high mountains. Now at age 82, he reminisces on the adventures, dangers and camaraderie of the job in his new book, “Between Heaven and Earth: The Adventures of a Smokejumper.”  The book is available online at Barnes and Noble and Amazon - there's also a Kindle edition. The Wenatchee World spoke to Jessup about the occupation, having his brother as a jump partner and his novel. When we asked what a jump feels like and he said that since smokejumping training is so extensive at a certain point, after two or three weeks, everything starts to become automatic. You climb in the airplane, you go up for your first jump, you're sitting at the doorway, and you're looking out at the horizon and you're almost numb. You can't remember what day it is or what you had for breakfast or anything else. When the slap on the back comes, you just automatically step right out of the airplane. In a few seconds you're hanging in the air wondering. ‘How the hell in the world did I get here?' Then, when you land after that first jump, you say, ‘Aw man, that was the greatest thrill in the world. I can't wait to do this again.' We also asked Jessup about the camaraderie amongst him and other smokejumpers. He told us that they're very, very close with. His brother was his jump partner in ‘59 and ‘60 and that created a very special bond between them. To read our full interview with Jessup, visit us at wenatcheeworld.com. Martha Schoppe is a smokejumper, one of a select group of firefighters that parachute to the location of the wildfires they're tasked with controlling. Out of the 400 smokejumpers across the country, only nine are female. Martha joins Payson to talk about the extreme physical and mental demands of her work, much of which takes place before they even reach the fire. From sewing their own gear to jumping from 3,000 feet into perilous terrain to hiking with 140 pound packs in all kinds of weather, smokejumpers have earned their reputation as being one of the most specialized and experienced tiers of firefighters. Martha talks about some of her most uncomfortable landings, why fighting fires in Alaska can sometimes be extremely wet, and the physical stamina required to work for 18 hours at a time on a fire that lasts for weeks. She also talks about some of the common misconceptions about wildfires, and what it was like leading an inmate crew. In the six months of the year that Martha isn't smokejumping, she's pursuing other types of physical extremes. Not only is she a competitive CrossFit athlete, but she also runs 300+ mile ultramarathons (sometimes while pulling a sled in negative degree temperatures), ice climbs, and does Jiu Jitsu. In spite of all of this, however, her greatest claim to fame may be her multiple trophies in arm wrestling. She and Payson talk about all of this and more in this episode of The Adventure Stache.

During the summer of 2018, the western United States and Canada entered what had previously been an ‘unprecedented’ wildfire season.  Walls of flame threatened environments from urban neighborhoods to national parks in fires burning more intensely than we’ve seen in this lifetime. And a generations-old debate rages on: can and should humans be doing more to manage these wildfires before they get started AND while they burn?  Or should we decide that 100+ years of fire suppression has led us down the wrong path, and it’s time to get out of the way of a natural process? As with anything this complicated, no one side is ever 100% wrong, so we had to take a closer look. This conversation is not one about the details of firefighting, logging, or forest conservation efforts.  It’s about entire ecosystems and community vitality - and how fires have a dynamic impact on both. Wildfires put economic security - and even human lives - on the line, so it’s no surprise perspectives on how to manage and control them evoke strong emotions.  But, as with all Interchange panel discussions, we focused on bringing balanced and informed perspectives to the table. We hope you’ll learn something new, or have an opportunity to listen deeper on this challenging and sensitive topic.
