From the insider tales of booking metal shows to the unpredictable nature of band interviews, the guys dissect what makes this podcast a metal masterpiece. But it doesn't stop there! Dustin and Lucian explore the nuances of interviewing musicians, sharing their experiences with Levi from Miss May I and the ever-entertaining Lucas from Black Heart Booking. Join Cole and I as we catch up from the bands recent tour on the Misery Signals farewell tour. Cole shares what it's been like to hit the road with one the bands heroes, getting to work with Jesse on a song from their previous album. We also reflect on the show I saw on Chicago a few weeks prior. Cole talks about the making of their latest album, Between Inverted Worlds, how they got Dallas Green to be featured on a track, and how its been to sort of be the gateway for some fans to find out about Alexisonfire by their comments of wanting to hear Dallas's voice over heavier music. We also talk the importance of branding and the continuity of color schemes and such on all their releases, get into some wrestling talk and more in this chat with the Trench guitarist. MKE Style. Right from the midwest we have three fellas who book shows in Milwaukee, play in bands, run venues, and just generally put on for their scene.  To have such a committed group of people in hardcore is what develops a scene or keeps it going... The population of the Milwaukee metro area is slightly north of 1.5 million, but there has been a steady stream of bands that have made this city become known for more than being named after a power tool brand. This week we are putting on for ten different bands with a track each.  It spans 40 years. So put your air pods in vibe. Tracks played:1. Die Kreuzen - "Rumours" 2. The Enemy - "Since By Man"3. Misery Signals - "The Year Summer Ended In June"4. Cross Me - "Motive"5. We had the pleasure of interviewing Trench over Zoom video!Setting the bar high with their debut record Condition (2017), Trench paved themselves a notably unique lane in both hardcore and nu-metal genres. Not stopping there and taking their sound to even further extremes, The Gift of Guilt (2019) was a testament to Trench's ability to reinvent themselves with each release. The 3-song behemoth experimented with synthesis, ambient post-metal soundscapes, and captured the pain of loss while embracing the hardest truths in life.Throughout these two releases, Trench's unrelenting aggression and extensive touring brought them international recognition, and has allowed them to share the stage with bands such as Misery Signals, Integrity, Harm's Way, and Comeback Kid. Propelled by the leading single “Hell Bent Gate” which features Jesse Zaraska of Misery Signals on guest vocals, Trench landed on Revolver's "Top 5 Bands To Watch" list. Blending their previous styles with far more avant-garde song arrangements, Trench take us to a place where we are left contemplating our inner demons, trapped under the weight of our absence in the present moment. As the pandemic brought most of the music industry to a screening halt, Trench had to walk away from a tour lined up with Misery Signals as opening support across the east coast of the US and Canada. Not letting a cancelled tour come between them and their will to succeed, Trench quickly adapted to their circumstances and wrote new material, which landed them a deal with New Damage Records (Dine Alone Records), serving as a testament to the undying determination that drives the metal quintet.Constantly pushing the envelope and developing a catalogue of songs that will forever leave their mark on the industry, there is just no telling how Trench will leave us feeling after consuming their carefully crafted chaos. We want to hear from you! Rig Rundowns

There's heavy music … and then there's End. Formed in 2017, the band is vocalist Brendan Murphy (Counterparts), guitarist Will Putney (Fit for an Autopsy), guitarist Gregory Thomas (formerly of Shai Hulud and Misery Signals), bassist Jay Pepito (Reign Supreme), and drummer Billy Rymer (the Dillinger Escape Plan). The supergroup was created to push the extremes of hardcore music. And, as you'll soon find out in this Rig Rundown, mission accomplished. From day one, guitarists (and producers) Putney and Thomas strived to achieve a signature calling card. They wanted a monstrous, monolithic tone that bulldozed listeners. “It's pretty aggressive [laughs],” concedes Putney. “When we started the band, Greg and I talked about finding an identifiable tone that was us and sticking with it.” And the roots of their sledgehammering sound? “We're very influenced by the Nordic metal of Entombed, and then, later, Rotten Sound, and American delineations Trap Them,” says Thomas. “A lot of those bands rely on the Boss HM-2 or clones to get their grinding distortion. We actually landed on the Way Huge Swollen Pickle fuzz because it's more articulate for our galloping picking and offers more control.” While the band does continue to challenge their consistently crushing sound, the Pickle always satisfies. “Every time we record something, we'll try other pedals in place of the Swollen Pickle, but we always go back to it,” admits Putney. “It's become the one. It's us.” Hours before End's sold-out show at Nashville's the End (appropriate coincidence), PG's Perry Bean popped onstage to explore the (nearly) mirrored, merciless setups of guitarists-turned-producers Putney and Thomas. Thomas details how three octave pedals and two noise gates coexist in his setup. Putney pulls back the curtain on the development of his signature https://www.stltones.com/products/stl-tonality-will-putney-guitar-plug-in (STL Tones Tonality package). And both prove that a bottom-heavy fuzz paired with prominent pitch-shifting into a 5150 is the way to part seas and elicit moshing madness. Ever since their respective bands toured together in 2017, guitarist Chris Wethington (of Softspoken) and drummer Cody Frain (of A Scent Like Wolves) entertained the idea of writing together in a new project. Four years later, after touring across the world, racking up millions of streams, and releasing Billboard charting albums separately, their ideas and talents have come together to create the perfect blend of progressive metalcore grooves and beautifully dissonant melodies. Giving a voice to the music is Chris Roberts - the original vocalist of (formerly) post-hardcore band Emarosa (then also known as Corsets are Cages). Roberts played a large part in writing the first versions of most of the songs that would end up on Emarosa's breakout EP "This is Your Way Out", but parted ways with the band to see success in two other regional acts (The Revival Sound, Take Me Home) before taking a break from performing. Having shared the stage with Roberts while in his first band (Thwomp in the House of Boo), Wethington knew that Roberts' voice and vocal style was the perfect fit, and it turned out that after a long break to collect himself and refocus, Roberts, too, was ready. To round out the lineup, Wethington brought in Garrett Harper, whom he played alongside not only in Softspoken, but also in their mutual first band, Thwomp.

John Porcell takes us through the process of recording this album with Tom Soares at the helm while Adam Blake (H2O) gives us a unique look into the life of a young man crossing over into a whole new world in more ways than one to play in a band bubbling at the surface of superstardom. Howie Abrams, former A&R at RR also gives us a little inside look at how the band even arrived onto the label as well as the expected wealth of knowledge you should expect from this king of New York. COYOTE CORNER: Branden Morgan of Misery Signals, one of the best drummers in music today or yesterday, tells us about the influence Demanufacture's mechanical double bass had on him. One of the most influential, most successful, most widely-known, and one of Adam's Top 20 albums of all time, 'American Idiot' by Green Day, is what we're highlighting in this track-by-track review of a modern classic. Sixteen years after the album first released, we look at the album's complex and layered themes of existentialism, repressed rage, and lost love and dissect each song piece by piece to discover whether or not the message and the album as a whole holds up going into the new decade. It gets emotional in this one, so we hope you're ready to join us on this feels-trip. Please enjoy! Also on the episode this week; we share the brief news of new music coming our way from both The Menzingers and even AFI; Adam catches us up on the state of the MLB going into week 2; and we share some quick thoughts on other albums we listened to this week from Bad Religion, Make Them Suffer, Broadside, Good Tiger, Colour In The Clouds, Misery Signals, and Creeper. Thanks again for spending some time with us this week! Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History, indeed, it is a very special episode for me personally and I hope my listeners also enjoy this episode. My guests were Ryan Morgan and Jesse Zaraska, Guitarist and Vocalist of Melodic Hardcore band Misery Signals. Ryan and Jesse were grateful enough to give me some of their time to discuss the 15 year anniversary of one of the most prolific albums to be released in the genre, their album “Of Malice and the Magnum Heart”. Ryan and Jesse take me through the early days of the band, a history which most people familiar with Misery Signals already know, but for the sake of the podcast and the history I was after, it seemed apt to start there and work our way into the writing and recording of the record. Jesse talks about “The Year Summer Ended in June” and the story behind that song, which, again, most fans of the band are familiar with. We discuss how the band wrote closely together for this record and how the writing process was relatively quick and very inspired. They also talk to me about recording with Devin Townsend and how it was a dream of Jesse's to work with “Hevy Devy” most of his life up to that point. WE touch on the Malice X tour that coincided with the albums 10 year anniversary along with Mathew Mixon's excellent Documentary about the album and the band called “ Yesterday was Everything” All that and some ever so slight hints about new material thats been in the works for the band.
