Nosferatu is a gothic horror film directed by Robert Eggers, offering a fresh yet authentic take on the classic vampire tale. Set in 1838, the story follows newlyweds Ellen and Thomas Hutter. Thomas, a real estate agent, embarks on a journey to the remote Carpathian Mountains to facilitate a property sale to the egnimatic Count Orlock. As Thomas ventures deeper into Orlock's world, Ellen becomes the object of the vampire's obsession, leading to a series of haunting and perilous events.Starring Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgard, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Ralph Ineson.Music by Robin CarolanProduction Design by Craig LathropEdited by Louise FordDirector of Photography Jarin BlaschkeProsthetics and Visual Effects by David WhiteWritten and Directed by Robert Eggers
We take a look at the little known other remake of Nosferatu that surfaced last year, directed by David Lee Fisher and starring Doug Jones as Graf Orlock!
Given their shared source material, Robert Eggers' NOSFERATU and Francis Ford Coppola's BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA understandably have a lot overlap in terms of plot and character, but the two films are miles apart in their interpretation of that source material, particularly as applied to its titular vampire. We're of split opinions on Eggers' bleak, monster-forward characterization of Orlock, especially how it plays against NOSFERATU's ideas about female desire and sexuality, but agree it provides a fascinating counterpoint to Coppola's florid spin on the Count as a tragic romantic antihero. We examine that contrast further in Connections alongside other character parallels — the Renfields, the Van Helsings, the maidens fair — as well as how the two films' diverging styles each reinforce their filmmaker's take on the title character. And in place of Your Next Picture Show, we offer some impromptu reflections on the life and work of David Lynch, who died the day this episode was recorded. Please share your thoughts about BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, NOSFERATU, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta In the year 3000, the salvage spaceship Mother III happens upon the derelict transport Demeter. Captain Van Helsing and his crew board the abandoned ship. They explore the bridge and find the corpse of the Demeter's Captain tied to a chair and clutching a crucifix. Despite the misgivings of the crew, particularly intern Mina Murry and vice-captain Aurora, the Captain claims salvage rights and decides to tow the ship back to Earth. As the crew prepares to return, Mother III suddenly uncouples from the Demeter, leaving them stranded with no means of communication. Later, cargo specialist "187" and deckhand "Humvee" discover a cargo bay full of coffins. 187 speculates that the coffins could contain smuggled goods and opens one, only to find sand. Humvee heads back to the bridge while 187 stays to open the other coffins; he's soon mysteriously attacked. The crew rushes to 187's aid, only to find that he's now a vampire. Under orders from his "master", 187 vows to kill the entire crew. Aurora, fleeing 187, runs into the "master", a vampire named Count Orlock. Aurora makes her way to a recreation room, where she reports her encounter with Orlock and reveals his intentions to return to Earth. Upon questioning, she's unable to explain how she escaped Orlock unharmed. Thinking that Aurora could be lying, the Captain ties her up, and Humvee guards her. Soon, 187 gains entrance and attacks Humvee, who manages to stake him in the heart with a pool cue. Aurora, still tied up, confesses that she's an undercover android cop investigating salvage activities. This is why Orlock didn't bite her, as he sensed that she had no actual blood flow. The Captain and Humvee feel betrayed but untie her, thinking that they can use her as a weapon against Orlock, due to her immunity against vampirism. Searching the ship's database, the Captain and the Professor, who uses a wheelchair, discover that the legendary vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing was one of the Captain's ancestors. The Professor believes that Orlock will seek revenge against the Captain. The Captain learns how vampires can be stopped and decides to steer the Demeter on a course towards a binary star system. Orlock soon confronts the Captain and Aurora. Aurora leaves to rally reinforcements, leaving the Captain to fight Orlock alone. Orlock eventually gains the upper hand and turns the Captain into a vampire. Aurora and Humvee return, only to be attacked by the Captain. Aurora stakes him with another cue stick, but Mina (now a vampire herself) attacks, allowing Orlock to escape. Humvee dispatches Mina. The Professor, despairing of his chances of survival, finds Orlock, who promises to free him from his disability in return for aiding Orlock's return to Earth. When Aurora and Humvee return to the bridge, they find the Professor passed out. Aurora stabs him with a cross, revealing that he was a vampire. A furious Orlock tries to enter the bridge, but Humvee and Aurora close the door on him, cutting off his arm in the process. As the Demeter draws closer towards one of the binary stars, Humvee and Aurora confess to each other that neither knows how to pilot the ship. Knowing they are about to die, they take comfort in the fact that Orlock's plan to return to Earth has been foiled. Aurora reveals that she was originally a sexbot before being upgraded to be a cop, meaning she can give Humvee some solace before the end. Humvee accepts the offer and they spend their remaining time having sex.

Can horror be beautiful? Robert Eggers seems to think so, and James and returning guest Joe Thorn sink their teeth into his latest film, a love letter to the classic century old story from silent cinema now given 21st century sound and color. A questionable sacrifice play, the myopia of science, and broad brush portraits of Christ and AntiChrist emerge from this Victorian horror. Keep the crosses close, things might get bloody… Watch the episode here. Rate and review to get 2 FREE Popcorn Theology Stickers! Send us a textWelcome to our FFF Christmas mash-up where we are going to look at the two important titles released on the 25th of December in the year of Our Lord 2024: Nosferatu, directed by Robert Eggers and starring Lily Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Bill Skarsgard, and Willem Dafoe up against A Complete Unknown directed by James “Walk the Line/Ford Vs. Before we throw down with the garlic, wooden stakes, crucifixes and Gibson J-50's, the synopses:In Nosferatu the Dracula story is reimagined as a German tale where newlywed, social climbing Thomas Hutter is sent to Transylvania to sell a house to the mysterious Count Orlok. Orlok in turn knows Hutter's Wife Ellen as years before she allowed him to enter her soul. After Hutter escapes Orloks castle of horrors, Orlock relocates to Wisborg and brings evil and plague with him. With the town gone mad, it is up to Ellen to stop Orlok. In A Complete Unknown, it is 1961 and a young Bob Dylan arrives in New York City to meet his idol Woody Guthrie. Introduced to Guthrie by Pete Seeger in the hospital where Guthrie is dying, Dylan becomes immersed in the New York Folk scene, developing a relationship with folkl sensation Joan Baez. Years go by and Dylan decides to go against Seeger and the Folk community by playing an electric guitar at the famous Newport Folk Festival. Chaos ensues. MOVIE DISCUSSION: Stephen and Melvin are joined by Shirleon to discuss the highly revered classic vampire film Nosferatu, a film with a 100-year legacy! Topics: (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 30-minutes talking about our October/Halloween plans, from movies to habits! (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) Nosferatu is a very simple movie about a vampire, a man, and his wife. This was Shirleon's second time watching Nosferatu. The first time was great. The second time... not so much.Stephen observed how Nosferatu can feel slow and boring for a modern audience, yet also feels Nosferatu is an effective film overall.Melvin had a unique experience in which he was confronted with his mortality. Why? Because everyone involved in Nosferatu, from its conception, plagiarism, and preservation is dead.Nosferatu is shot during a time when movies were "plays on film", and thus didn't contain the same freedoms and creativities we are now accustomed to movies that separate themselves from the stage.Count Orlock is grotesquely charismatic, parading the film with a transfixing nature.Discussing the hardship of film preservation and audience engagement for a film that is both pre-talkie and had a court case resulting in the destruction of all original film negatives.Back in the days of yore, black and white films could be colored by painting on the film itself, and musicians could perform original music for the film based upon their talents and interpretations. With this in mind, the concept of preserving the "original experience" of older films becomes far more complicated, as it cuts down as deep as regional and local creativity.Nosferatu seems to present a message around the overbearing presence of predator vs prey, from not only a man vs man angle (Hutter vs Orlock) but also man vs nature (the town vs the plague). Primarily, it seems Nosferatu is expressing a horror unique to nature.Despite Count Orlock's diabolical design, there is still an expressionistic depiction of sensuality throughout Nosferatu.Recommendations:Frankenstein (1931) (Movie), or any other classic Universal Monsters movie.Absentia (2011) (Movie)And I Darken by Kiersten White (Book)Support on Patreon for Unique Perks! In the final chapter of Nightmares of Nosferatu we examine the influence of Orlock on Salem's Lot, the semi-sequel to Herzog's remake Vampire in Venice (1988) starring Klaus Kinski, and finally look at Shadow of The Vampire (2000) a movie that poses the question - what if Max Schreck was actually one of the undead?
In this episode, hosts Katherine Troyer and Toni Tresca discuss a classic...the 1922 silent horror film Nosferatu: Eine Symphonie des Grauens (Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror). Episode Highlights: We explore the magic of this film as we look at everything from the realism of the set to the fantastic make-up to the practical special effects. We examine the character of Orlock as a supporter of technology and discuss the differing views on whether he serves as an anti-Semitic metaphor. We look at some of the film's reception at the time of its release, including opinions that this film would deteriorate the intelligence of "the common man." And finally, we look at how this film offers us a foundation for all future vampire films. A Dose of Scholarship: In this episode we referenced the following books: Jörg Waltje's Blood Obsession: Vampires, Serial Murder, and the Popular Imagination; David J. Skal's 2004 Hollywood Gothic: The Tangled Web of Dracula from Novel to Stage to Screen; and Stacey Abbott's 2009 Celluloid Vampires: After Death in the Modern World. This supplement gives you the tools you need to show down with anything from a spare gang to legions of npc flunkies or rampaging beasts. In this episode we are joined with our good friend Eli Parsons, who listeners may know from the excellent Dragons of Phaeton blog and who created some awesome NPC characters for the Curse of the Alabaster collaborative event last year. In the first half of the episode we talk about how Necromunda has changed with the new edition. In the second half we discuss some of the Necromunda models, with particular focus on the newly revealed Orlock gang. Be sure to follow Eli @totradus on Instagram and his blog the Dragons of Phaeton
Lady Luck takes us back to 1922 for the silent movie that first ushered vampires to the silver screen. Nosferatu, played by Max Schreck, goes by the name Count Orlock. He has his minion, Knock, summon the film's protagonist named Hutter up to his castle. He soon learns that his host is a vampire feeding off of him nightly. He escapes to rush home and help his somewhat suicidal wife before Orlock moves in next door. The body count rises and horror ensues.
Thank you again to Al, Justin and Earl from Dangers (and Vitriol Records) for the really awesome interview. One of the best current bands in hardcore (or even music, I think), listen to them if you haven't.
