On July 15, 2019, the bodies of Chynna Deese and Lucas Fowler were found by highway 97 in BC, Canada. A couple days later the body of Leonard Dyck would be found, along with the burned-out truck belonging to Kam McLeod. These discoveries sparked a Canada-wide manhunt for Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky which would take RCMP all the way to Northern Manitoba. July, 2019. A young couple travelling through one of Canada's most picturesque regions are found murdered on a deserted roadside. Days later, another murder victim is discovered 400km away. Police are reticent to link the crimes, but it soon becomes clear that a spree killer, or killers, may be on the run. A weeks-long manhunt ensues, that culminates with an ending that only raises more questions than it answers. On July 22nd, 2019 a Canadian officer was driving around on his normal patrol route when up ahead of him he saw a truck run a red light at an intersection. The officer quickly flashed his lights and signaled to the trucks driver to pullover. Inside were two young men who appeared to be in their late teens. They looked nervous and scared. He told them he'd watched them run a red light and that they needed to be more careful. The teens just nodded in agreement and apologized, still frightened. Wondering why the boys seemed so unnerved, The officer decided to search the boys vehicle, but didn't find anything suspicious. The only items in the back were survival gear and maps, pretty common belongings for people driving in that area who liked to hike or camp in the wilderness. Realizing he had nothing to keep them further, The officer told the boys to be more careful driving and sent them on their way. As he watched them drive off he had no idea he was letting two killers go free. Last summer, long before a pandemic was on the horizon, the biggest story was a teenage manhunt. After discovering the bodies of Lucas Fowler and Chynna Deese at one location and Leonard Dyck at another, the RCMP named an 18 and a 19-year-old as their main suspects. And they were on the run. After a nationwide sweep that involved the military and tons of media coverage, police found the killers' bodies in the brush of northern Manitoba. In a video found on site, Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky confessed to the murders and voiced their plans to end it all with a murder suicide. Now, a year later, the RCMP are preparing to close the case for good. But one major question remains: Why did they do it? GUEST: Alex McKeen, Vancouver bureau reporter for the Toronto Star, who, with colleague Douglas Quan, recently wrote about the anniversary.
Episode 128 - On the 15th of July, 2019, just outside Liard Hot Springs, B.C., the bodies of an innocent couple, Chynna Deese, 24, from Charlotte, NC, and her Australian boyfriend, Lucas Fowler, 23, were found shot to death beside their 1986 Chevy van. Police had no idea who had done this, or why. Four days later, a burning truck, registered to a young Vancouver Island man was found burning near Dease Lake, B.C. As police were attending to that scene, they were notified of another man found murdered only two km from the burning truck. This 64-year-old botanist and UBC lecturer, named Leonard Dyck. His Toyota RAV4 was missing, along with the two young men, who quickly became suspects in the murders, sparking a manhunt that took police through four Provinces and one Territory, ending in Manitoba, thousands of kilometres from where it began. It's episode 15 and we can hardly believe it! With great sadness, Amanda has to step down from the podcast and talks about that in our opening. We do however have a great replacement who will be joining Amber on the next episode, so stay tuned! Of course, we then cover our basic Hulu/Netflix obsessions like Veronica Mars and the new season of Mindhunter. Then we get right into it. Amanda starts off her last story with the VERY recent murders of Chynna Dees, Lucas Fowler and Leonard Dyck. The entire timeline of the murders is revealed and we go over what has been released to the public. Next, Amber explains the Slender Man stabbings which involves a creepypasta story that took on a life of its own. It's time to talk about how great Jon Groff is because sometimes...all you need is crime!
At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, B.C. RCMP Assistant Commissioner Kevin Hackett said that while officers will continue to investigate why murder suspects Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky may have murdered three people, it will be difficult to determine the motive. BC RCMP say they share the public's concern after some grim mysteries these past few weeks. RCMP are looking for a bearded man who they say had been seen talking to one of the victims of a double murder. Investigators announced yesterday that 23-year-old Lucas Fowler, and his 24-year-old girlfriend Chynna (CHINA) Deese, had been shot dead on the Alaska Highway. Police are also investigating the death of another man in northern BC, and two missing young teenage men. As we've been telling you, this story has been receiving international attention, with news crews from Australia travelling to Northern BC to report on the story. Kat discusses the Canadian Highway murders! She tells us all about the victims, suspects and more. "Like many young couples in love and in the spirit for adventure, Chynna Deese and Lucas Fowler only wanted to have a good time when they set out on a trip across Canada. But instead, Deese, 24, and Fowler, 23, were shot dead under “what can only be described as horrific circumstances” in an attack that would lead investigators to the body of 64-year-old Leonard Dyck hundreds of miles away and on a hunt for two teens feared responsible for the killing spree. "Come join us and explore the dark side of humanity!
