The Truro Murders case is one of Australia's most chilling serial murder investigations. It involves the deaths of seven young women in South Australia during the mid-1970s. The primary perpetrators were Christopher Robin Worrell and James William Miller, whose actions and subsequent trial have left a lasting impact on the Australian criminal landscape. Worrell died before being brought to justice, Miller was found guilty of six of the seven murders despite claiming he had nothing to do with the deaths of the women. On January 21, 1958, nineteen-year-old Charles Starkweather changed the course of crime in the United States when he murdered the parents and sister of his fourteen-year-old girlfriend (and possible accomplice), Caril Ann Fugate, in a house on the edge of Lincoln, Nebraska. They then drove to the nearby town of Bennet, where a farmer was robbed and killed. When Starkweather's car broke down, the teenagers who stopped to help were murdered and jammed into a storm cellar. By the time the dust settled, ten innocent people were dead, and the city of Lincoln was in a state of terror. Schools closed. Men with rifles perched on the roofs of their houses. The National Guard patrolled the street. If there is a cultural version of PTSD, the town suffered from it. Starkweather and Fugate's capture and arrest, and the resulting trials about the killing spree, received worldwide coverage. The event would serve as the inspiration for the movie Natural Born Killers and Springsteen's iconic album Nebraska. Today, the story has dropped far from the national consciousness. With new material, new reporting, and new conclusions about the possible guilt or innocence of Fugate, the tale is ripe for an updated and definitive retelling. In Starkweather, bestselling author Harry N. MacLean tells the story of this shocking event and its lasting impact, a crime spree that struck deep into the heart of the heartland.Harry N. MacLean joins Ed Opperman to discuss this book and more.BookWebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Could you ever imagine a more unlucky person—or does the sheer weight of evidence prove otherwise? As the murder case of four college students in Moscow nears its second anniversary, questions swirl around the accused, Bryan Kohberger. Despite an arsenal of defense tactics aimed at delaying and creating doubt, Kohberger remains at the heart of this complex and chilling mystery. But can an alibi built on “late-night drives” really hold up when those drives just happen to pass by the victims' house repeatedly? And what about the knife sheath with his DNA left at the scene—was that the world's worst coincidence, or something more sinister? As investigators piece together data from digital evidence and behavior analysis, many are left wondering: Is there an undeniable link between Kohberger and his alleged victims, or is the case still missing that one damning detail? One thing's for sure—the defense is betting on the power of time to soften the blow of this horror on the jury. Will it work, or is justice already lining up against him? #MoscowMurders #TrueCrime #BryanKohberger #JusticeForTheVictims #DNAEvidence #BehaviorAnalysis #HiddenKillers Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Standing ovations from the U.S. Congress have only emboldened Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose new killing spree threatens a regional, if not an even larger war. Tens of thousands of mourners packed the streets of Tehran for the funeral of the political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated early Wednesday, July 31st in an Israeli attack on his residence in Tehran. Haniyeh was visiting for the inauguration of the country's newly elected president. The murder of Haniyeh and his bodyguard, just days after Israel killed a Hezbollah top commander in a drone strike near Beirut, causes many knowledgeable experts to say that a regional or even larger war is inevitable. We speak to our geopolitical analyst Gerald Horne. And for tips on being a freedom fighter and staying sane, we speak to Charlene Marie Muhammad, a certified yoga instructor and author of the new book, Yoga in the Black Community: Healing Practices and Principles. She appears at Busboys and Poets in Hyattsville, MD, August 4, 2024, 6PM. With headlines and other segments: New report released by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights documents torture and death of Palestinians in Israel concentration camps... After six months of holding down a pro-Palestine encampment outside Secretary of State Antony Blinken's house in McClean, Virginia, protesters were removed by heavily armed Virginia State police. The Real News Network is covering protests outside of the Olympic Games in Paris... The 17th annual African Diaspora International Film Festival takes place August 2 - 4, 2024 at George Washington University in Northwest DC. 311) Killing Spree (1987)
Trade Voorhees joins the show once again and he brings a movie with him! Neither Chris nor I have ever heard of Killing Spree but luckily, it was easy to find... It's a wild movie and we had a lot to talk about, especially that scene where the main actresses head turns into a big pair of lips and she gives "head" to a guy and his head starts to shoot out white, milky fluids. It's a wild movie. We also discuss music and show a lot of love to Kool Keith, Trade rates some bars, I try to talk Chris into watching cannibal movies and we show no love to movies that try hard to be edgy and end up being dull. We hope you enjoy the show! By the time the dust settled, ten innocent people were dead and the city of Lincoln was in a state of terror. Schools closed. Men with rifles perched on the roofs of their houses. The National Guard patrolled the street. If there is a cultural version of PTSD, the town suffered from it.Starkweather and Fugate's capture and arrest, and the resulting trials about the killing spree, received worldwide coverage. MacLean tells the story of this shocking event and its lasting impact, a crime spree that struck deep into the heart of the heartland. In 1958, 19-year-old Starkweather went on a killing spree that shocked the nation. He took his 14-year-old girlfriend, Caril, with him. The story of that crime spree has become a legend in true crime history, and Starkweather and Fugate have been portrayed as villains on par with Bonnie and Clyde. In this episode, I revisit this case by speaking with best-selling true crime author Harry MacLean. His new book Starkweather: The Untold Story of the Killing Spree That Changed America takes a comprehensive look at this case and comes to some new conclusions about Caril Fugate's guilt or innocence in the murders. True Crime Tuesday presents: Starkweather: The Killing Spree That Changed America with Author/Researcher, Harry N. MacLean! On January 21st, 1958, Charles Starkweather and his fourteen-year-old girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate changed the course of crime in the United States when they went on a murder spree through Nebraska and Wyoming. By the time the dust settled, ten innocent people were dead, and the city of Lincoln was in a state of terror. It was the first mass killing of the modern age, and television brought the crime spree and the trails into homes for the first time—it was a precursor of the awakening of the country from the slumber of the fifties to the rebellious, violent sixties. Soon to follow were Manson, Bundy, Speck, Gacey, DeSalvo, Ramirez, Whitman, Berkowitz, and numerous others. From Starkweather on, people in the Midwest locked their doors. No one is better suited to tell this story than best-selling true crime writer. Harry Maclean, who hails from the same town as Starkweather, and knew many of the people involved with the case (in fact his older brother had shop class with Starkweather). With new reporting and information about the case, and new conclusions about the possible guilt or innocence of Caril Ann Fugate, this is a tale that's long overdue for an updated and definitive retelling. Harry joins TCT today to talk about his new book, the relationship between Charlie and Caril, whether he thinks Caril really participated in the killings or not, and the ramifications of this case on American culture. Few American criminals have captured the imagination of Hollywood like Charles Starkweather, a red-haired James Dean wannabe who murdered eleven people in 1957 and 58. With him during most of his killing spree was his girlfriend (and possible accomplice) Caril Ann Fugate. Among the victims were Caril's own mother, step-father and little sister. My guest, Edgar award winner and bestselling author Harry N. MacLean, knew the Starkweather family as a boy in Lincoln, Nebraska. One of his main goals in writing his book, "Starkweather: The Untold Story of the Killing Spree that Changed America", was to examine more closely whether 14-year-old Caril was complicit in the murders, or instead coerced by Starkweather to participate.
