On July 15, 2019, the bodies of Chynna Deese and Lucas Fowler were found by highway 97 in BC, Canada. A couple days later the body of Leonard Dyck would be found, along with the burned-out truck belonging to Kam McLeod. These discoveries sparked a Canada-wide manhunt for Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky which would take RCMP all the way to Northern Manitoba. On July 22nd, 2019 a Canadian officer was driving around on his normal patrol route when up ahead of him he saw a truck run a red light at an intersection. The officer quickly flashed his lights and signaled to the trucks driver to pullover. Inside were two young men who appeared to be in their late teens. They looked nervous and scared. He told them he'd watched them run a red light and that they needed to be more careful. The teens just nodded in agreement and apologized, still frightened. Wondering why the boys seemed so unnerved, The officer decided to search the boys vehicle, but didn't find anything suspicious. The only items in the back were survival gear and maps, pretty common belongings for people driving in that area who liked to hike or camp in the wilderness. Realizing he had nothing to keep them further, The officer told the boys to be more careful driving and sent them on their way. As he watched them drive off he had no idea he was letting two killers go free. In the summer of 2019, a nation-wide manhunt broke out in Western Canada, searching for Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky, two teenage boys who were on a killing spree. The murders were random and appeared to be crimes of opportunity, with no apparent motive or reason behind them. At one point, these two boys were even thought to be potential victims, declared missing - until the police realized that they were the killers, leaving three bodies in their wake. In 2019, Canadian teenagers Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod embarked on a deadly crime spree. They told their families that they were headed to the Yukon territory to look for work. But, after stopping to buy a semi-automatic rifle, they started their killing spree. Their victims were selected at random and included a young couple whose van broke down on a road trip to Alaska and a botany professor and husband in his sixties. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss these two Canadian killers. It later surfaced that they had been thinking about murder. At first, the authorities believed they were in danger. But, as more information surfaced, it became clear that they were the killers and one of the largest manhunts in Canadian history began. Authorities were shocked when they finally caught up with the teenagers. You can help support the show at patreon.com/criminology An Emash Digital production Learn more about your ad choices. Last summer, long before a pandemic was on the horizon, the biggest story was a teenage manhunt. After discovering the bodies of Lucas Fowler and Chynna Deese at one location and Leonard Dyck at another, the RCMP named an 18 and a 19-year-old as their main suspects. And they were on the run. After a nationwide sweep that involved the military and tons of media coverage, police found the killers' bodies in the brush of northern Manitoba. In a video found on site, Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky confessed to the murders and voiced their plans to end it all with a murder suicide. Now, a year later, the RCMP are preparing to close the case for good. But one major question remains: Why did they do it? GUEST: Alex McKeen, Vancouver bureau reporter for the Toronto Star, who, with colleague Douglas Quan, recently wrote about the anniversary.

The Roy Green Show Podcast - According to polling released yesterday, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney is the third most popular Premier in Canada after Francois Legault of Quebec and Scott Moe pf Saskatchewan. To start the podcast, Premier Jason Kenney and Roy discuss the conflict between Alberta and B.C., pipelines and Jagmeet Singh's argument that Quebec must have the right to veto pipelines crossing the province, and climate change as an issue of public attention. They also touch on Premier Kenney's view of Justin Trudeau appearing in blackface and brownface. Guest: Jason Kenney, Premier of Alberta - Following Trump's Whistleblower's complaint, the Democratic Party is launching an official impeachment inquiry. Is President Trump in danger of impeachment and perhaps removal of office over his call and interactions with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky? Or is this a political witch-hunt since the Whistleblower is acting on second-hand information? Guest: Fred Fleitz, Director of the Center for Security Policy in D.C., Served in 2018 as deputy assistant to President Trump and chief of staff to national security adviser John Bolton, 25 years with the CIA and DIA and chief of staff for the NSA. - Ipsos polling for Global News this week found the Conservatives gaining a 4-point lead as Liberals slip in the wake of Trudeau's blackface scandal. Meanwhile, another poll showed that climate change ranks as issue #3 for Canadians, behind health care and affordability. 1 in 3 Canadians wants climate change to be fought even if it hurts the Canadian economy. But half don't want to pay an extra cent. Guest: Sean Simpson. VP. IPSOS Canada - Montreal Economic Institute poll show that Quebecers by 66% majority prefer Western Canadian oil, and 45% of Quebecers prefer pipelines over shipping oil by tanker trucks (14%), rail (13%), or ship (9%). And 79% of Quebecers who voted for Premier Francois Legault and his CAQ government prefer Western Canadian oil over any other sources. This should be raised during the 2019 federal election campaign. Guest: Germain Belzile, Montreal Economic Institute - There are still questions remaining, after the RCMP released their report on B.C. teen killers Bryer Schmegelsky & Kam McLeod. A young couple found dead, a middle-aged man's body near a burnt-out camper, two teens missing after leaving home to look for work: these storylines would all converge in the remote landscape of northern British Columbia, culminating in a manhunt that would put the spotlight on a bizarre manhunt swirling in mystery, fear and warnings with journalists scrambling to keep up with the twists and turns. BTS with CTV Vancouver host Penny Daflos discusses the disappearances of Australian Lucas Fowler and his American girlfriend Chynna Deese, the discovery of UBC lecturer Leonard Dyck's body and the missing persons case-turned manhunt of Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod with reporter Shannon Paterson. They delve into the challenges of a massive and constantly-changing case that put huge demands on our newsroom as the story grew broader and moved across the country.

Police in Manitoba continue the manhunt for Bryer Shmegelsky and Kam McLeod, the Port Alberni teenagers wanted for the murders of three people in northern B-C over two weeks ago. RCMP have set up a roadblock in the town of Sundance and searched the forest near the abandoned community, which is 57 kilometres northeast of Gillam. This comes a day after the RCMP Dive team ended its search of the Nelson River north of Gillam, after a damaged aluminum boat was found along the shoreline last Friday. As well, police are reportedly going over surveillance video from fast food restaurants in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, after possible sightings there. On July 15, a young couple, Chynna Deese from North Carolina, and Lucas Fowler from Sydney, Australia, were found dead on the Alaska Highway in northern British Columbia. Four days later, the body of 64-year-old Leonard Dyck a lecturer at the University of British Columbia, was found 475 kilometres from the first crime scene. Once believed to be missing persons, 19-year-old Kam McLeod and 18-year-old Bryer Schmegelsky, both from Port Alberni, B.C., are now fugitives on the run from RCMP. In the past few minutes, RCMP in Manitoba have tweeted: The heavy police presence in York Landing has been withdrawn & policing resources in the community will return to normal. The RCMP thanks the community for their patience and understanding. Chief Leroy Constant says the massive manhunt for teen murder suspects Bryer Schmegelsky (shmuh-GEHL'-skee) and Kam McLeod has ended in York Landing without success. Cpl Julie Courchaine says they received a tip yesterday the two wanted fugitives had been seen in the remote Manitoba community, but police have yet to confirm it was them. She says mounties are asking the people of York Landing to stay safe while they search the area. They're also asking people not to post online where the police are searching in the community. Canadian police urged people in a remote northern town to stay inside and lock their doors Monday as officers hunted for two teenagers who are suspects in the murder of three people in British Columbia.Police Cpl. Julie Courchaine told a news conference in Winnipeg that the agency received a tip Sunday afternoon that Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky may have been spotted in York Landing — about 55 miles (90 kilometers) from Gillam, where a vehicle that had been used by the suspects was found burned last week. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police issued a tweet saying "it is critical" that residents in York Landing "stay indoors as much as possible with their doors locked."The community of about 500 people is accessible only by air or a ferry, though a rail line runs about 15 miles (25 kilometers) away.Nineteen-year-old McLeod and 18-year-old Schmegelsky have been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Leonard Dyck, whose body was found last week in British Columbia. They are also suspects in the fatal shootings of Australian Lucas Fowler and his American girlfriend Chynna Deese of Charlotte, North Carolina, whose bodies were found July 15 along the Alaska Highway about 500 kilometers (300 miles) from Dyck's killing. The RCMP Manitoba said the Royal Canadian Air Force was assisting with the search.Police earlier had been searching further east in the town of Gillam, aided by tracking dogs and drones.Meanwhile, the father of one of the suspects has sent a book to reporters describing his mental health, harassment convictions involving his ex-wife and his relationship with his fugitive son.Alan Schmegelsky said the book titled "Red Flagged" is a novelization of actual events and fictionalizes some incidents. He said he sent the book to reporters to highlight how a "broken system" has shaped him and his son."My son and I have been treated like footballs. It's time for some truth," he said.He writes that he was arrested by Victoria police on Aug. 4, 2008, his son Bryer's eighth birthday, three years after his acrimonious split with the boy's mother.Court records show he was charged with criminal harassment in December 2008. He was found guilty of the lesser offence of disobeying a court order. He returned to court numerous times over the next decade on charges of harassment and breach of probation.Schmegelsky says he does not currently have a permanent residence and has been homeless for about two years, staying primarily in Victoria. He has said that he did not see his son between the ages of 8 and 16, at which age his son briefly lived with him in Victoria and they worked in construction together for a summer. He showed The Canadian Press recent photos and videos of his son on his phone.
As the Canada-wide manhunt for Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky continues, communities in Northern Manitoba are left feeling vulnerable. In one of the smaller communities, people are saying that they’re locking their doors for the first time. That’s where a community watchdog group is stepping in. They’re called the Bear Clan Patrol, a group of mostly Indigenous volunteers that started out patrolling the streets of Winnipeg, but whose model of activism and community work has spread across Canada. Host Tamara Khandaker talks to James Favel, executive director of Bear Clan Patrol Inc. They discuss the origin of Bear Clan Pratrol’s community work, the services they provide, and why the group is in Northern Manitoba this week.

On Friday, four days after the bodies of Deese and Fowler were discovered, police in the town of Dease Lake – several hours’ drive south – launched a search for Kam McLeod, age 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, age 18, after their truck was discovered in flames near the town. The two youths had been traveling to Whitehorse in the Yukon in search of work. Update: Two Missing Young Men named as suspects in deaths: https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/23/americas/canada-couple-murder/index.html Chynna had just graduated from Appalachian State (NC native) and Lucas, son of an Australian Policeman and Aussie native, were traveling North America and were last seen in British Columbia. Their van broke down and after 24 hours, Chynna’s brother stopped hearing from her. Last reports were the couple arguing by the side of the road with a trucker. The body of a man was found on Friday near a burning pick-up truck south of the Stikine River Bridge on Highway 37 in northern British Columbia. The 450-mile stretch is north of the road chillingly dubbed the Highway of Tears - with up to 50 women vanishing or being murdered there since 1970. So many women and girls have vanished or turned up dead along one stretch of the road that residents call it the Highway of Tears. A special unit formed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police officially linked 18 such cases from 1969 to 2006 to this part of the highway and two connecting arteries. More women have vanished since then, and community activists and relatives of the missing say they believe the total is closer to 50. Almost all the cases remain unsolved. In 2016, the Highway of Tears played into “political scandal” as the government attempted to create better relations between Canada and it’s native people. Chris Manseau had said it was unusual for investigators in sparsely populated northern British Columbia to have two "complex and dynamic" cases at once. Dozens of Canadian women, and possibly even more Indigenous Women have disappeared in this area over the PAST FOUR DECADES: British Columbia is infamous for serial killers and criminals who often targeted aboriginal women. In 2007, Robert William Pickton, a pig farmer, was convicted of killing six women, though the DNA or remains of 33 women were discovered on his land. Many of them were aboriginal. One of Canada’s youngest serial killers, Cody Legebokoff, was 24 when he was convicted in 2014 of killing four women near the Highway of Tears. David Ramsay, a former Prince George provincial court judge, and convicted pedophile was imprisoned in 2004 for sexually and physically assaulting indigenous girls as young as 12. The manhunt continues for two teenage suspects wanted in three deaths in Northern BC. At last word, they were believed to be somewhere in or near Gillam, Manitoba, where residents are locking their doors and keeping their eyes open. Police are looking for 19-year-old Kam McLeod and 18-year-old Bryer Schmegelsky (schmeh-GAL'-ski). Guest: Crystal Goomansingh Global News Reporter in Winnipeg - heading to Gillam this afternoon
Chapter 1
Two teens who were initially listed as missing in northern BC are now considered armed, dangerous suspects in the murders of two young tourists and an unidentified older man. RCMP Sergeant Janelle Shoihet says 19-year-old Kam McLeod and 18-year-old Bryer Schmegelsky -- both Port Alberni residents -- have been confirmed to be travelling in northern Saskatchewan, driving a 2011 Toyota Rav 4. Investigators have not released many other details, saying they don't want to jeopardize the investigation, but until this morning it was believed the teens had vanished while driving to Yukon in search of work. Their burning camper van was found last Friday, just a short distance away from the site where the body of the unidentified older man was found -- and nearly 500 kilometres from the Liard Hot Springs area where Australian Lucas Fowler and American Chynna Deese were murdered more than a week ago. Guest: Rumina Daya Global News Reporter
Chapter 1
Pressure is mounting on the BC RCMP to answer questions surrounding three murders in northeastern BC. We should learn more after 2pm today, when officers will hold a press conference. The first murders were those of a couple found last week near Liard Hot Springs -- 23-year-old Australian Lucas Fowler and his American girlfriend, 24-year-old Chynna (CHINA) Deese. Then, the discovery of a body and the disappearance of two men whose camper truck was found on fire.
