Is social media something you can take or leave? It can definitely be a time-suck if you get stuck in the scroll or you're not using it effectively. I've often said that you should have a presence on social media, especially if you're an online business. This week on the podcast, guest Maggie Gentry proves me wrong! She stopped using social media three years ago and continues to have a thriving business. Of course, social media is just a piece of your overall marketing strategy, and having other visibility measures is important. Maggie shares how she maintains visibility without social media, how she markets mindfully, and why energetic capacity is incredibly important when it comes to how you show up online and in your business. This isn't to say that you should stop using social media. Far from it, in fact. But if social media makes you want to pull your hair out, there are other ways! As she engaged in more meditation and wellness programs, she saw her personal life evolve as her work evolved. Our guest this week is thought partner and business coach Maggie Gentry. Maggie works with whom she calls “high conscious entrepreneurs” (folks who use their businesses as a platform to create the change they want to see in the world.) by helping them create systems for businesses that feel good in their body, and support that vision for societal change.A recovering people pleaser, Maggie goes deep in talking about naming & owning our wanting; about how responding to our desires helps us untether from the needs, stories, and expectations of others; what it means to run a service-based business as an introvert; and the ways in which stepping into a bigger game for her business meant getting serious about creating a morning routine that truly nourishes and supports her body & soul.We touch on Alanis Morrissette as self-care, about the evolution of her journaling practice into a truly intimate dialogue with her true self, and about the Goldilocks approach to self-care and ritual, meaning to keep experimenting until you find something that is “just right.” Maggie is also an avid reader, and this episode is filled with great reading recommendations. There were so many moments in this conversation where I needed to pause and savor the depth of what Maggie was sharing. I know you’ll love her as much as I do!Resources & references mentioned in this week’s episode include:“Writing is like driving at night in the fog. Today’s episode is with Maggie Gentry, founder of Own Your Why. She is a thought partner and business coach that helps creatives who are deeply craving support and space to make the pivotal transitions that will sustain their soul work. Her journey from a marketing background to owning her own business is really interesting, and she tells us about the spiritual shifts she’s made toward trusting her intuition and going through an intensive meditation training. The most exciting change that Maggie has made in her work has been turning her Own Your Why community into a pay-what-you-can offering, and how that embracing radical generosity has affected her. Her generous spirit really radiates through in this wonderful conversation! TOPICS DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE: How traditional goal setting can be too arbitrary to allow us to adjust to new information What it’s been like to crave structure yet wanting to rebel against it in favor of flexibility Busy-ness as consumption, and how digital consumption can parallel the consumption of food The difficulties of uncertainty in business, which contrasts with how we often see it portrayed Establishing boundaries between life and work Our complicated relationships with money as business owners, supplementary income, and stress tolerance Trying out taking a full time job and how that didn’t align How the Being Boss podcast connected all 3 of us, and the origin story of this podcast Maggie’s long and leisurely morning routine - slow mornings are her most important self care Meditation training and noble silence Maggie’s self-care must haves - self-care that doesn’t just “check the box” Maggie’s astrological chart and how it relates to her business, communication, and more How the philosophy behind Simon Sinek’s Own Your Why inspired Maggie to try a totally new pricing model - pay as you’re able Radical generosity The importance of trust (Maggie’s word for 2018) and inner work in her life lately RESOURCES DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE: Start With Why by Simon Sinek Simon Sinek’s TED Talk: How great leaders inspire action Digital Munchies Being Boss Kundalini meditation Pema Chodron Yin yoga Yoga therapy Paths to God by Ram Dass The Aquarian Conspiracy by Marilyn Ferguson MORE FROM MAGGIE Website Instagram Own Your Why Virtual Office Hours

However, not everyone likes to chat about the transformation that happens on the way to finding something that is. Hi there folks! Creatives Meet Business is an event and podcast series based out of Austin, Texas for artists and creatives to learn the ropes of entrepreneurship. This episode features Maggie Gentry Miller, Founder of MaggieGentry.com, who joined us in February during our roundtable event on Goal Planning. This episode uncovers the values behind goal planning and how you can create more meaningful goals for yourself. Without further ado, let's hop in and hear what she has to say! Notes: 0:00 to 1:06 - Ashland Opening Remarks and Intro of Maggie Miller 1:11 to 2:42 - Introduction of Self and Topic Mindful Moments 2:43 to 9:12 - David DeSteno Research - Power of Gratitude Delaying gratification study in the 1970s with a marshmallow and children Kids who could wait for second marshmallow had "grit" Further studies of those same children who waited for a second marshmallow hit every success marker (good grades, good colleges, good work), but they weren't living as long. Deprivation of what we want now and the pleasure of the present moment increases our stress hormones. A prolonged period of that shaves off years of life. David DeSteno says the problem is that our goals are self-serving, it doesn't rely on strengthening social bonds and community (historically what we've done) Three values that allows us to work as a collective to achieve goals: Gratitude - Look at what you're grateful for on a daily basis. Gratitude increases our threshold for patience which then increases our self control Compassion - Giving ourselves a healthy perspective of what the overall environment is Pride - Take an honest pride in your work, in your strengths, and in what you do really well Enjoy the process 9:13 to 10:30 - Danielle LaPorte - Desire Map - Create goals with soul Creating goals that make you feel the way you want to feel Looking at values (gratitude, compassion, pride) and understanding how you want to feel in pursuit of that goal, then you're finally ready to create a vision board 10:31 to 14:11 - Vision boarding Maggie does her board once a year How do I want to feel? - that's the question she uses when creating a board. Start with a central image (start in the very middle) - that's the focal point and everything builds around it After creation, post it in a place that's visible every day Gratitude journal / journaling - create a gratitude practice To accommodate pride and the process in pursuit of the goal, Maggie has a piece of paper on the wall with blank slots for the number of client spaces she has available. It's about physically creating space. 14:12 to 15:48 - Visualization Two kinds of visualization - Guided Meditation and Visualization (Power of Habit / Michael Phelps example) Michael Phelps strategy with visualization 15:51 to 20:01 - Ashland Closing Remarks Mindset by Carol Dweck // Carol Dweck TedTalk Like this podcast?
