How Does Personal Tragedy Shape One Of The Most Powerful Women In Healthcare? w/Karen Lynch || EP. 201

When Karen Lynch became CEO of CVS Health, it was more than a milestone, it was a signal. Millions were watching. She led through the pandemic. She raised wages. She centered the patient. She broke glass ceilings again and again. “I remember the day Karen became CEO,” says host Laurie McGraw. “I think the world stood still for a minute. I smiled. I took notice. And so did everyone else.” The accolades poured in: Forbes Most Powerful Women, Fortune's Most Admired. But the impact went far beyond headlines. This conversation isn't just about what Karen accomplished at the top—it's about the experiences that shaped her long before she got there, and the values driving how she leads today. Like many leaders, Karen's path was forged in her beginnings. For her, those beginnings were marked by unimaginable loss: losing her mother to suicide at age 12, and just a decade later, losing the aunt who raised her. That grief left an indelible mark—a sense of urgency to fix a healthcare system she had experienced not as a leader, but as someone failed by it. That lived experience has been her North Star. From her early days in finance to leading one of the largest healthcare organizations in the world, Karen has consistently asked: What does the patient need? And how can we make it simpler?  As a leader, she learned that courage isn't a talking point, it's a practice. And sometimes, it means making a hard decision that costs you. When her tenure at CVS ended, it wasn't scandal. It wasn't a failure. It was a choice, grounded in accountability. Because real leadership isn't just about celebrating the wins—it's about owning the moments that hurt. Now in a chapter of reinvention, Karen is clear: she's not stepping back, she's stepping into purpose. From helping future CEOs find their voice, to launching a women's leadership institute, to urging healthcare leaders to rebuild public trust before it's too late, she is focused on impact over position. The title may be different. The mission is not. In this episode of Inspiring Women with Laurie McGraw, Karen also speaks about: What would healthcare look like if we designed it around the patient? Can simplicity heal what complexity has broken? How do we rebuild public trust in healthcare—and what happens if we don't? How can we better prepare the next generation of women leaders? Is technology the single most powerful lever for healthcare transformation? What does it take to navigate reinvention with optimism, purpose, and grace? Thank you Karen Lynch. Welcome to the Health Marketing Collective, where strong leadership meets marketing excellence. In today's episode, we welcome back Jen Hovelsrud to join Sara Payne as co-host to discuss the power of executive thought leadership on social media, emphasizing the critical role it plays in the health industry. Jen Hovelsrud brings to light the importance of involving multiple voices on social media platforms, advocating for leadership diversity and representation. She also discusses prominent leaders such as Karen Lynch of CVS and Bryony Winn of Carillon Health Solutions, who engage authentically with their audiences. The conversation further explores how Dr. Sushan Jain of ScanHealth maintains a balanced online presence, focusing on genuine healthcare issues while minimizing overt company promotion. Sara underscores the natural transitions in executive careers, encouraging leaders to embrace these shifts without fear. The discussion navigates through Andy Slavitt's influential role during the COVID-19 pandemic and Dr. Angela Fusaro's effective use of video to connect with audiences, setting benchmarks for authentic social media engagement in the healthcare sector. Throughout the episode, both Jen and Sara emphasize the repercussions of not participating in social media thought leadership. They discuss how reduced visibility can dampen company influence while competitors gain an edge through active engagement. The conversation also highlights the growing trend of incorporating social media presence into hiring practices and the significance of building strong personal brands. Thank you for being part of the Health Marketing Collective, where strong leadership meets marketing excellence. The future of healthcare depends on it. Key Takeaways: Multi-Voice Engagement for Safety and Representation: Jen Hovelsrud highlights the importance of various leaders contributing to social media conversations. This approach ensures diverse perspectives, enhances representation, and provides a safer, more inclusive narrative for audiences. Embracing Career Transitions and Social Media Presence: Both Jen and Sara Payne recognize that executives often face natural career shifts. They advocate for leaders not to fear these changes but rather to leverage social media presence to maintain and enhance their influence. Authentic Leadership Engagement: Exemplary leaders like Karen Lynch, Bryony Winn, and Dr. Sushan Jain demonstrate how engaging on social media with authenticity about one's passions and industry issues can build trust and credibility. This form of engagement resonates more deeply with audiences compared to purely promotional content. Risk Management through Thought Leadership: Actively participating in thought leadership on social media mitigates the risk of invisibility and lost influence. Companies must understand that engaging online is not optional but a critical component for maintaining relevance and competing in the industry. Strategic Social Media Use for Executives: Effective thought leadership requires a well-devised strategy. Future leaders are encouraged to engage early, develop core beliefs, and consistently post industry-relevant content to build a stronger brand presence. Sara and Jen discuss the benefits of social media engagement, including increased trust, better sales outcomes, and more opportunities for public speaking and press interviews. CVS Health unveiled its earnings report during an investor call where CEO Karen Lynch outlined the company's plans for refining its business strategy. Lynch relayed to investors, "We are committed to improving margin in Medicare Advantage, and we will do so by pricing for the expected trends. We will do so by adjusting benefits and exiting service counties. We are committed to doing that." Her statement suggests CVS's resolve to make strategic adjustments and enhance operational efficiency and profitability in key areas, in response to current market dynamics. On the call, CVS Health acknowledged that its financial performance in the first quarter of 2024 fell short of anticipated benchmarks. Nevertheless, the company reported a focused approach on fostering growth and improving its healthcare offerings, specifically an increased investment in healthcare delivery assets like Signify and Oak Street.Highlighted on the earnings call were CVS's business strategies, including CVS CostVantage and TrueCost, aimed at promoting transparent business practices. According to CVS, the activation of these pharmacy models results in improved pharmacy retention, accelerated growth, and better cost efficiency for consumers. The company stated that recent shifts in consumer behavior have led to a decrease in front-store activity, affecting the pharmacy and consumer wellness sectors. This presented challenges but also gave rise to demand growth in the mental health and medical pharmacy domains along with supplementary benefits. According to CVS, increased enrollment figures reflect strong customer interest in the company's diverse solutions.CVS also pointed out the challenges affiliated with the Medicare Advantage business. In response, the company mentioned strategies such as analysis of past claims data, optimization of pharmacy benefits spending, and enhanced productivity initiatives, all aimed at mitigating these challenges while also boosting plan-level benefits and operational efficiency.Despite the difficulties linked to the Medicare Advantage business that shaped CVS Health's financial performance for Q1 2024, the company reported commitment to its growth plans. Acknowledging potential decreases in front-store activity, the company expressed continued dedication to innovation, with an emphasis on mental health and other supplementary benefits. CVS stated that its upcoming strategy seems poised to capitalize on the rising consumer demand in these sectors. Furthermore, their focus on healthcare delivery systems underscores their efforts to strengthen integrated healthcare solutions. While CVS Health ended Q1 2024 on a note of optimism, navigating the challenges posed by shifts in consumer behaviour and issues with the Medicare Advantage business will be crucial for the company moving ahead. The strategies CVS outlined on the call demonstrate the company's proactive stance in light of these challenges. However, their efficacy and impact on CVS's future performance will become more apparent in upcoming quarters. Execution of these strategies, sustaining its innovative spirit, and the company's ability to adapt to the evolving market dynamics will be key considerations for CVS Health in the foreseeable future. In this special episode from JPMorgan Chase's seventh Annual Leadership Day, Anu Aiyengar, JPMorgan Chase's global co-head of mergers and acquisitions, sits down with the highest-ranking female CEO ever in the Fortune 500, CVS Health CEO Karen Lynch. Karen discusses how her commitment to mental and physical health in her own life has carried over to the work she's doing at CVS Health.   Personal commitment to mental and physical health Karen tells Anu that she had an early traumatic experience with healthcare when, at age 12, she lost her mother to suicide. She and her siblings were then raised by an aunt, who also died early—when Karen was still in her 20s. She says that her mother didn't know how or where to get the mental health she needed, and years later, sitting in her aunt's hospital room, Karen realized she didn't know the questions to ask or how to get the help she needed either.   “And both of those experiences sort of have fueled my passion around healthcare and really being able to make a difference so that people are educated about healthcare, that people have access to healthcare, that people understand their options that are available to them in healthcare,” she says. “So that's really the passion I get up with every single day, from a very young age.”   Karen notes that it wasn't just her passion that got her to where she is today: she's had help from many, including relatives, a high-school teacher, and mentors and sponsors throughout her career. From her aunt she learned the importance of being decisive and making decisions based on whatever information was available. “That was an important lesson because as leaders, as people kind of managing people, people are always, always looking at you and watching whether or not you're making those decisions,” she says.   Another key lesson Karen learned early was about the importance of taking care of your own mental and physical health. Today, she says, she does that through early morning workouts as well as end-of-the-day Duolingo lessons. “I think it's important for all of us to make sure we're taking care of our own selves because if you can't take care of yourself, you can't take care of others,” she notes.   Keeping the customer as the north star Leading CVS Health through the unprecedented challenge of the pandemic allowed Karen to put her leadership and priorities to the test. The last several years have seen huge changes in both mental and physical healthcare. “Before the pandemic we had 10,000 virtual visits for Telepsychiatry,” she says. “Last year we had 10 million. And so that just gives you a sense for the change and the ease that people have had with using virtual care.”   To thrive in the midst of all that change, Karen says she had to lean into focusing on her employees first, and then, most significantly, the customers and their evolving healthcare needs. “And we set sort of guideposts that we were focused on health and safety. We were focusing on our colleagues' safety, focusing on the importance of getting Americans vaccinated and then looking around the corner,” she recalls. “So we had to tactically make sure that operationally we could do all the things that we had to do, but at the same time, we had to set a sort of a north star because everything in the world was changing around us and consumers expectations in healthcare were changing dramatically.”   In the end, Karen oversaw the shift in CVS Health “from kind of a corner drug store to this broad national healthcare company.” Today the company is focused on being in the community—meeting people's growing interest in accessing care online. How does she do it all? “I think it's all about setting your own goal, setting your expectations, defining who you are and what you want to be and getting comfortable in your own skin,” she tells Anu. “And for women, sometimes that's hard. We just have to keep working at it. And I always say, there's always going to be those little voices in your head saying, You can't do this or questioning it. And you've just got to push beyond those voices and say, Yes, I can.”   Full transcript here

Karen Lynch, Senior Director of Qualitative Insights at InsightsNow Inc. joins us today to talk about PlayFULL Insights™, an innovative approach to qualitative research. Karen was granted the Market Research Disruptive Innovator award for her work which benefits consumers, clients, and fellow researchers.   The Rise of Qualitative Data Researchers and marketers want to gain more insights into the patterns and trends behind the figures of quantitative researches. They want to understand why these figures are such and what forces are driving it. This is why the need for qualitative data is on the rise.  The bulk of the work done by Qualitative Insights is for people who are just trying to understand the consumer journey, what's attributing to what, and the drivers of the ratings or rankings. “Its all about telling stories. If we understand the data, we can tell a better story about it  ‘cause once we know the reason and rationale for what the trends are showing us, it becomes more actionable.” - Karen Lynch   The Methodology of PlayFULL insights™ PlayFULL insights™ is a method that leverages people’s imagination. It is highly valuable in the innovation space for people to understand what the content of one’s imagination might be—their aspirations, wishes, hopes and even fears projected out in the future.  According to scientists, the frontal lobe of the brain shuts down when asked about the future. However, using “play” as a part of their qualitative research, researchers are able to effectively dive deep into the subject’s thoughts, in a very safe, strategic and deliberate way. “PlayFULL insights a way for us to use the power of play to unlock that imaginative perspective thinking.” - Karen Lynch   Adaptation of LEGO® Serious Play® Psychologists theorize that the idea of building tangible models helps children—not only to understand the world around them—but to easily communicate their learnings and knowledge to other people. Within those theories,  LEGO® Serious Play® developed a method which they can use in their board rooms to aid their strategic planning and communication set-backs. Karen has a certificate in Facilitating and Designing Workshops with LEGO® Serious Play® Method. She adapted the methods used by LEGO in creating PlayFULL insights.   Quick links to connect with Karen Lynch: Karen Lynch - LinkedIn InsightsNow - Website   Sima loves to hear from her listeners with input, questions, suggestions and just to connect! Shapiro co-authored a book with futurist David Houle about how cultural change and accelerating technological advancement are affecting brands called, Brand Shift: the Future of Brands and Marketing. The book begins with a history of brands and branding then moves quickly into an explanation of the forces at play in today’s rapidly changing environment (an age Houle first labeled the “Shift Age”). The book ultimately ends with the trends that will impact brands and provides strategies for brands to embrace to effectively navigate the changed landscape of the future. While Houle and Shapiro state, “Brand Shift: the Future of Brands and Marketing does not seek to be an authoritative or academic textbook on marketing,” the dog-eared, flagged and notes-logged pages of the review copy we received tells a different story. Welcome to the WIRe Series. Recorded live in Austin, this series is bringing interviews straight to you from the WIRe MRx Meet & Mingle event. In this interview, host Jamin Brazil interviews Karen Lynch, Senior Director of Qualitative Insights at InsightsNow. Contact Karen Online: LinkedIn InsightsNow [00:00] I’m here with Karen Lynch.  We are prepping for the WIRe event tethered to IIeX in Austin.  She is the Senior Director, Qualitative Insights at... [00:12]     Insights Now. [00:13] Insights Now.  There you go. This is a little-known fact.  I have participated with WIRe from the very early days when Kristin started it while working with Decipher.  And I actually stopped going to the events because I felt (and this was my Ah ha moment), I felt so uncomfortable being the only man in the room.     [00:38] Oh, got ya, got ya. [00:39] Which is a really interesting counterpoint to like last night - I went to dinner, and there were three guys and a girl.  And I’m thinking to myself, “It’s so interesting having the shoe on the other foot.” And just not having that perspective until you’re in that environment. [00:53]    Yeah, yeah, absolutely.  What you just talked about is what it feels like to be a minority in the room, right?  And so, in many industries, women deal with that all the time: they step into a room filled with men.  So that’s why we celebrate with Women In Research, why we celebrate women in these roles because it’s a strive for equality and strive for balance.  And the closer we get, the better it is for all of us. And your support at those sorts of events brings us closer. So, thank you for that. [01:20] For me, it is such an interesting head space.  The framework of business... Recently, I was reading a Harvard Business Review article and they were talking about how temperatures set in offices are set to men’s ideal temperature. [01:37]       Oh, that’s interesting. [01:38] Which is like three degrees cooler than women would prefer it to be. [01:42] Yeah, most likely. [01:42] And I thought, “Gosh, it’s like just set up in that sort of like framework of...  And I’m not trying like us versus them, us being obviously the man. So, I don’t mean it that way.  I just think there’s so much that’s built up in society that we just take for granted as sort of normal.  And then, to your point, being the only “minority” in room, really does change that dynamic. So, my point in bringing all that up is just that WIRe is an inclusive organization and it’s...  Regardless of any sort of demographic profile, you can participate whether being a supporter or even joining different events they’re putting on. It’s a great opportunity to increase your overall exposure.  Important work. So, ah, tell me Perspective Thinking: “Accessing Perspective Thinking and the Impact on Research Product Development.” What in the world is that? [02:43] What are we talking about?  So, in market research we’ve been talking a lot about implicit, explicit testing over the years.  We talk a lot about System 1 versus System 2, thinking that there’s only two ways of thinking and two ways of making decisions.  For those of you listening that don’t necessarily know the difference there, it’s as simple as something in System 1 might be a quick, automatic decision like “Hey, I’m going to grab the gallon of milk that has the red cap ‘cause I know that’s whole milk.”  You don’t have to think much about it; it’s pretty automatic. And then there’s System 2, which is like, “Now I need to buy a car.” And you just don’t grab one off the shelf. You sit and you think and you’re deliberate about it. And those two modes of thinking are at play with every consumer decision that’s made, but what they don’t account for is the imagination.  And so say, you wear glasses. So say, you’re in the frame shop and you’re trying on different lenses and you’re letting your...

Last week I told you to tell me which Director you wanted me to interview, and Karen Lynch, Area Director of Operations in Kansas City, won by a HUGE margin.   On this week's episode, we learn about how Karen came to work for US Beef and how we could have easily missed the opportunity to hire her.  We talk about her experience opening restaurants and how she was able to move up in the organization by helping out when needed.  She also tells us about the first time she met Jeff Davis, owner of US Beef, and we laugh about how that interaction could have gone horribly wrong had she reacted differently.   I've done my best to avoid having guests on CompassCast that have any knowledge of my performance when I was first starting out in management...but my streak ends at Episode 20.  Karen shares a couple of stories about working with me as a trainee when we opened Nixa, MO back in 2005.   A fun episode with a fantastic lady who has influenced the careers and lives of so many people...add me to that long list.   So, in the spirit of influence, Karen has issued a "Selfie-Challenge".  She wants you to track down someone at US Beef that has played a large role in your success or development, tell them how they've impacted you, and take a selfie with them. Send your selfies to CompassCast@gmail.com and be sure to include a story that illustrates how this person has impacted you and your career.  The first 3 people that send in selfies (with their story) will get a $20 off coupon code from our buddies at The Icebox.  This code can be redeemed for some killer Arby's swag that's available on www.arbysswag.com.  Not only will the first 3 selfies get a code, but I will also choose 2 of my favorite selfies/stories and they will receive a code as well.  That's 5 codes in all!  Big thanks to The Icebox for showing CompassCast some serious love.   Stay proud, stay strong, and let Compass be your guide. Cheers! BD CompassCast:  http://compasscast.libsyn.com The Icebox: http://www.iceboxcoolstuff.com  Arby's Swag:  https://arbysswag.com  Karen and Bo Selfie: CLICK HERE

Good Cop, Bad Daughter: Memoirs of an Unlikely Police Officer by Karen Lynch This on demand audio series is a part of the Executive Girlfriends Group Vignette Series. Chicke Fitzgerald interviews Karen Lynch. The original live interview was 11/07/14. A poignant and humorous story of a young woman's journey from chaotic childhood to San Francisco police officer. Raised by a counter-culture tribe in summer of love Haight-Ashbury, she was taught to despise "The Man." But when the San Francisco Police Department was forced by court order to hire women, she found herself compelled to prove to the world that women could cut it as cops, a betrayal that caused her police-loathing mother to brand her a Nazi. Good Cop, Bad Daughter is an often humorous, poignant adventure story of Karen's journey from pot-smoking Cal student, to Renaissance bar serving wench, to street cop. As she finds family and acceptance in a men's club that never wanted her as a member, she fears she will one day face her mother, not as a daughter but as an arresting officer. Karen Lynch is a native San Franciscan. After graduating from UC Berkeley, she joined the San Francisco Police Department in 1981. She lives in Novato with her husband and their three children, including Kyra, who was the subject of an essay that won the 2012 Notes & Words national essay contest.      To order the book click HERE For Karen's Facebook page click HERE For more information about the Executive Girlfriends' Group see: http://www.executivegirlfriendsgroup.com
