This is a special episode of For the Good of the Public, cross-posted with "Conversing with Mark Labberton." https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/conversing-with-mark-labberton/id1161564408 Can joy be anything but denial in a rage-filled public life? Michael Wear joins Mark Labberton to reframe politics through the kingdom logic of hope, agency, and practices of silence and solitude. As 2025 closes amid political discord, we might all ask whether joy can be real in public life—without denial, escapism, or contempt. "… Joy is a pervasive and constant sense of wellbeing." In this conversation, Michael Wear and Mark Labberton reflect on joy, hope, responsibility, and agency amid a reaction-driven politics. Together they discuss the realism of Advent; the limits of our control; how kingdom imagination reframes anger; hope beyond outcomes, dignity under threat, and practices (including silence and solitude) that restore clarity. About Michael Wear Michael Wear is the Founder, President, and CEO of the Center for Christianity and Public Life, a nonpartisan nonprofit that contends for the credibility of Christian resources in public life, for the public good. Episode Highlights "Joy is a pervasive and constant sense of wellbeing. … Joy is not a technique to then get people to do what you want them to do." "God's Kingdom is the range of his effective will." " Someone whose hope is rightly placed sees that a dignity denying culture does not have the final say." "Our will is effective and those things in which our will is not effective." "The pattern of domination and violence is an old one." "Willard would say joy is a pervasive and constant sense of wellbeing." " It is very difficult to have joy if you are taking responsibility for things that are not your responsibility." Public life as joyless space; lacking imagination for joy amid provocation, antagonism, and constant political showmanship "If there are places in our life where we can't conceive of joy, it's a problem with our view of God." Misplaced responsibility, misplaced hope; joy collapses when taking on burdens that aren't ours and treating agency as ultimate "God's kingdom is the range of his effective will." "We each have our own little kingdoms … where what we say to be done is done." Politics reveals limits; a clarity about what we can do, what we can't do, and what we must import into the rest of life "Our will is effective, and there are things in which our will is not effective." "Faithfulness is not the ability to determine a righteous outcome … to everything in which our lives touch." False responsibility, obscured agency Are we taking charge of what isn't ours while ignoring the real choices we do have? "That's a recipe for joylessness." Poked and prodded by provocations; entertainment, antagonisms, and helplessness normalize reaction and justify complicity Anger as political fuel Many assume that raising your voice is the only faithful posture inside the public arena. "I've had people respond to me: 'How am I going to get anything done in politics without anger?'" "Political imagination has been taken over by a political logic as opposed to a kingdom logic." Relearning responsibility and agency; hope not grounded in our effectiveness, but in what God is doing beyond our reach. "Ultimate hope lies outside of the range of our effective will." "It is in that realm in which we are perfectly safe." Hope is for a life that pervades all things. "So when your hope is in the right place, you can hope for a whole range of things." " Someone whose hope is rightly placed sees that a dignity denying culture does not have the final say." "Take off the old self with its practices and put on the new self." "Put on Christ now in a way that will affect everything around us." Herod: The paranoid leader Advent into Christmastide—what it means to dwelling in Emmanuel "This is why the incarnation is such an extraordinarily important cornerstone: It's that God enters in through Jesus into our world, in a world in which, yes, there may be great praises in heaven and on earth from those who understand something at least of who he is and what he's there to do. But it also lands him in a world of immediate physical and familial vulnerability of political and social, if not military, violence." Are we protected from vulnerability, or living in precarity? The pattern of domination and violence Refusing forgetfulness as 2026 approaches with fresh pressures and fresh calling. National call to silence and solitude; disinvesting from reactionary instincts to engage the world with renewed vision and clarity. silenceandsolitude.org "Silence and solitude… can infuse your public activity with right vision and right clarity." #MichaelWear #MarkLabberton #ChristianPublicLife #ChristianPolitics #SpiritualFormation #Joy #Advent #SilenceAndSolitude #Hope #PublicWitness Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment Magazine and Fuller Seminary.

In this episode of Equine Assisted World, Rupert Isaacson speaks with Dr. Megan McGavern, a board-certified physician in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Megan shares the powerful story behind the founding of C.H.A.T.S.—Creative, Holistic, Adaptive, Therapeutic Solutions—and how it was born out of both professional insight and personal necessity. When her son Cole faced significant challenges, and medical professionals told her to accept that he might never regain functionality, Megan refused to give up. Drawing on her medical training, clinical experience, and deep intuition as a mother, she created C.H.A.T.S. as a space where children like Cole could thrive. C.H.A.T.S. is not about traditional therapy or horseback riding—it is about building relationship, regulation, and readiness to learn through purposeful, adaptive, equine-based engagement. What sets Megan apart is her ability to take science-based, evidence-backed practices—like Movement Method—and integrate them meaningfully into both therapeutic and clinical settings. After traveling to New Trails to learn Movement Method and Horse Boy Method firsthand from Rupert Isaacson, Megan returned home and applied what she had learned with her son Cole. The profound changes she witnessed led her to establish C.H.A.T.S. as a nonprofit organization. From there, she worked to bring Movement Method into the medical establishment, eventually helping to launch a neuroscience conference focused on the approach and its clinical applications. What You'll Learn in This Episode:From Despair to Innovation: A Mother's Mission (Starts at 01:45)The moment Megan was told to “accept the loss” regarding her son Cole's future. Why she decided to go beyond traditional care models. The founding of C.H.A.T.S. and how it gave Cole a new chance at life.Movement Method and Medical Practice (Starts at 20:10)How Megan found the Movement Method and incorporated it into her work.Practical ways she's brought it into institutional and clinical settings. The role of science—not mysticism—in shaping her therapeutic philosophy.C.H.A.T.S. in Action (Starts at 32:40)What makes C.H.A.T.S. distinct from other equine-assisted programs. Why it's focused on adaptability, safety, and authentic connection. How Megan uses observation, relationship, and responsiveness to meet each child's needs. The Dual Role: Mother and Medical Professional (Starts at 48:15)How personal experience reshaped her understanding of care.Advice for professionals who want to do more—but don't know how.Why being present often matters more than having all the answers.Memorable Moments from the Episode:Megan recounts hearing that her son might never regain function (04:02).The turning point where C.H.A.T.S. took form in response to Cole's needs (11:50).Integrating Movement Method into medical care (24:35).A reflection on letting go of "being the expert" to simply be present (53:20).Connect with Dr. Megan McGavern:

Are you feeling heartbroken, heavy, or even outraged after the recent election results? Do you feel the ache of seeing a world divided and the weight of knowing that, once again, humanity's progress toward inclusion and compassion feels so far from reach? You're not alone. In this episode, I open my heart to those who are grieving the deeper implications of these election outcomes—not as a political discussion, but as an exploration of humanity, compassion, and the ways we can heal. This isn't about parties or debates; it's a call to embrace the stories and lived experiences that often go unheard, but which resonate across the world, across boundaries, and touch the lives of so many. If you're struggling to process the reality of a society that feels more divided than ever, if you're searching for a way to feel the depths of your emotions while finding strength and joy, this episode is for you. In this episode, I'm talking about: The feelings of heartbreak, fear, and confusion after the election results in America. Creating a space to listen to real human stories, focusing on shared humanity rather than political divisions. Greif over policies that threaten basic rights. The opinions that are shaped by fear and a lack of personal connection with those who are different than you. My commitment to awakening women to their strength and autonomy. The patriarchal structures that suppress women's potential. Choosing self-care as a means of resilience against oppressive forces. Creative expression and activism instead of consuming negative media. The balance of mourning and proactive steps forward. Encouraging others to understand opposing perspectives. Let's hold our broken hearts close, let's feel our rage, and let's remember that while grief is part of our journey, joy and resilience are our most powerful forms of resistance. Hi friends! We're a little late this week with posting this episode, but when you listen, you'll know why. In our last episode of Wear We Are for 2022, we wanted to look back at the trends, conversations, and developments in society -- the less-political aspects that bind our communities together. We talk about religious demographics, social media's longevity, smart phones, AI, and adolescent mental health. What were the trends you noticed this last year? In this sermon Barnabas launches our new series by showing how Acts must be understood from within Israel's generational desires for peace, and how Jesus safeguards these desires from becoming violent utopian dreams. Barnabas encourages the church to reclaim this persevering hope for satisfied needs and safety, and shows that it will not be brought about by any new charismatic man, but by the Spirit who organizes and empowers imperfect communities to birth shalom.

When you think of Christian hope, there are a few things that likely come to mind. What happens after we die? Does that matter for here and now? What is heaven? What will it be like? Where is heaven? What is salvation? What is the church? What is the resurrection? What does any of this have to do with today? When I bring up what happens when we die, I often get the response that it doesn't matter too much because we will find out when we get there. In one since there is truth in that because we have no idea what things will fully be like (as Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 13:8-12). On the other hand, what we believe about what happens when we die shapes what we believe God is doing in the world today and how we should live our lives. There are two types of hope found in scripture. First, hope is what lies ahead and is promised by a God who loves to bring hope to each of us. Second, hope is about how the Kingdom of God is breaking into our present-day realities where hope then spills out into the world today. We've tended to lean into the first aspect of hope while ignoring the second. What we believe about what happens in the world determines what we believe God is doing and what we are called to do in the world. We will be looking at a lot of scriptures in the coming weeks to establish a biblical foundation for hope but here are a few to investigate for this week: Isaiah 11, Revelation 21-22, and 1 Corinthians 15. Over the next seven weeks we are going to cover these topics of hope following the video series by NT Wright, “Surprised by Hope.” You can watch the videos here. If you do not have Right Now Media, you can access it here. You can purchase a participants guide here. Use this for your personal studies or as a small group study (now or in the near future). I recommend you watch these videos each week and study what the Bible says about the hope we have. I'll continue to provide my blog and podcast to help prepare for Sunday's lesson. Let's dig deep and reconnect with the foundations of the Christian faith and the hope we have to offer the world. June 19 – Hope for the World June 26 – The Hope of the Resurrection July 3 – The Hope of Heaven July 10 – The Hope of Jesus's Second Coming July 17 – The Hope of Salvation July 24 – The Hope of the Church July 31 – Reclaiming Hope in the Church
Listen in as Ben and Joy Hamilton (husband and wife) have an open conversation about their journey with infertility. They start by sharing their story of learning they had infertility and how that impacted their relationship as they both entered into a very difficult grieving process. Next, Ben and Joy discuss how infertility made it a challenge to be in relationships with others, including inside the church, and how the presence of compassionate listeners began to transform their pain as they borrowed hope from others. They also speak directly to couples who might be dealing with infertility, all mingled with their own story and experience. **This conversation is long, but certainly could be longer. This is a heavy topic, and we recognize there may be gaps or things that are not said. We hope the conversation is honoring and helpful to those who might be struggling here, and to those who may know and love someone who is**
Listen in as Ben has a special conversation with Todd and Kristin as they graciously walk us through some of their story and how Jesus has moved them from a place of shame and fear to freedom and hope.

“It is not safe to be in politics with your feet planted there, but with your feet planted in the gospel all manner of things are safe.” —Michael Wear Former White House aide and faith strategist Michael Wear says politics is not opt-in. When we use our imagination concerning the reason why the Priest and the Levite did not stop to help the wounded man, numerous things come to mind. Perhaps they were in a hurry to get to an important ecclesiastical meeting for which they could not afford to be late. Perhaps their temple regulations demanded that they touch no human body for several hours before their temple function began. Or, they could have been on their way to a meeting to organize a Jerico Road Improvement Association. Certainly this was a real need. It is not enough to aid the wounded man on the Jerico Road. It is also necessary to work to change the conditions of the Road which made robbery possible. Philanthropy is marvelous, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the need for working to remove many conditions of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary. —The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his sermon draft, "On Being A Good Neighbor" Welcome to the Better Samaritan podcast. Having worked in disaster and humanitarian crises around the globe in our academic and practical work at the Humanitarian Disaster Institute, we've seen many well-intentioned good Samaritans come forward to help others. Unfortunately, not all good Samaritans are helpful. (And we've made plenty of mistakes and keep learning ourselves!) If being seen helping others on the side of the road is more important to us than the victim himself, we miss the point. And caring for the victim without addressing the root causes of his plight doesn't end injustice—it only perpetuates it. Join HDI co-directors Jamie Aten and Kent Annan each week for a new conversation about how we can love the hurting person right in front of us, while also addressing the conditions that put them there in the first place. Normally in each episode we'll interview experts from various fields of study. Next week, inauguration week, we're thrilled to present a conversation with Michael Wear, a leading political thinker who has advised presidents on faith outreach. But today, we process together what happened last week at the U.S. Capitol. Why does it matter for Christians? How, and why, can we go about confessing and lamenting this event—even if we didn't take part? Because of this paradox about the internet: that it can be both a thing of beauty and a dumpster fire, we all have to do our individual parts to make it more of the first description: a place of needed connection, education, encouragement, and personal and communal growth, and much, much less of the latter. There's more than one way we can do this, but this episode is about one specific idea.
