Martin Drake ripped up the rule book and invited the "dynamic duo" that is Gemma Ellison and myself onto his podcast, Is This Room Free? We're not HR.But we are all about people. In particular, we're focused on enabling people to be and experience their best self. And enabling them to develop in a way that provides most value to the organisation. All this whilst creating the most engaging experience that means we feel good about what we do.So in this conversation, we unpick leadership development at its best, which is what we've created with Leadership Labs. This is about a process for honesty, collaboration, peer support and experiential learning. That might now sound mainstream but we push the boundaries. We empower leaders to design experiments that drive positive change in their businesses. Are you interested in a different way to develop the skills, confidence and ability to problem solve that is required of leaders today?Whether you're at the top of an organisation or leading a team of people in a managerial role... Leadership Labs will help you.Get in touch to find out more and benefit from the summer booking discount for our next Open Lab starting in September.More about Martin:Martin Drake is founder of Higher - a recruitment agency specialising in the HR and Marketing professions. The father of a possibly clairvoyant boy made no secret of his animosity towards his son, but does Martin Drake's latest vision reveal that his father had a change of heart before he died? This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted: The Classic Horror Podcast. Story: "The Birthright" written by Hilda Hughes (1931).
Martin Drake, a coal fired power plant located in downtown Colorado Springs, has burned coal to generate electricity since 1925. It burned its last piece of coal, however, on August 27, 2021 And it will transition to being fully decommissioned on December 31st, 2022. For now, Drake will operate by making electricity using a large natural gas generator. The generator is actually portable and can be repurposed after Drake is fully shut down. Jim, is retired from the United States Air Force and from running an independent Home Energy Rating company, I first met Jim as a student in one of the Rater certification classes I taught while with EnergyLogic. He is now involved in the heart of his community's energy future and is going to help describe what it takes to decommission a coal fired power plant. I hope you enjoy your listen! Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Tuesday August 31st. Today - The coal-fired Martin Drake power plant in Colorado Springs has shut down coal operations. So what lies ahead for workers whose careers are becoming increasingly obsolete? But before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we're taking you back to August 31st, 1885 when Elijah Myers' plan for the Colorado State Capitol was adopted. Both practical and aesthetic needs inspired the statehouse. It would consolidate offices - making government more efficient and cheaper - while also providing a showplace for a rich young state. Construction began in 1886 and lasted 15 years. Now, our feature story. The coal-fired Martin Drake power plant in Colorado Springs has been both a testament to American engineering and a symbol of coal's decline in the United States. The plant just recently shut down coal operations after decades, though natural gas operations continue. Two stories mark both coal's departure and how the plant's workers -- people like Chris Cox -- will move forward in the transition toward cleaner energy. Sun reporter Michael Booth spent time with Cox and, in a companion piece to his unique obituary for coal-fired generation, explains what lies ahead for workers like him who had carved out a career tending to a process now increasingly obsolete. Michael sat down to talk about his reporting with Sun colleague Kevin Simpson. You can read more on the shutdown of coal operations at Martin Drake power plant and employees like Chris Cox from Michael Booth at ColoradoSun.com. And Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today: Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold has filed a lawsuit to prevent embattled Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters from being involved in the upcoming November election. Peters has cast unfounded doubt on the results of the 2020 election and has been in hiding and under investigation since she allegedly allowed improper access to Mesa County's election system computer hardware. Health care workers at thousands of facilities in Colorado must get their first dose of coronavirus vaccine no later than Sept. 30. The state board of health voted to enact the rule in response to spike in COVID-19 cases caused by an explosion of the more contagious delta variant. The state estimates that about 30% of the health care workforce in the facilities and agencies that will be subject to the new rule remain unvaccinated. A new law that provides in-state tuition status to members of 48 tribes with historical ties to Colorado will immediately knock about $15,000 off the sticker price of the state's colleges and universities. But the long-term impact could open up a new higher education option for many more students -- particularly in states bordering Colorado like Wyoming, where many tribes have that historical connection. The number of Native American students enrolled in Colorado institutions has been in decline in recent years, and the in-state tuition law provides a tool to help reverse that trend. The Martin-Drake power plant in Colorado Springs burns its last coal this week after nearly a century, then transitions to natural gas. We talk with plant manager Somer Mese about the change, and a panel of guests on the bigger picture. Then, a teaching shift in Cripple Creek. And remembering Luis Ibarra, who brought Tejano music to southern Colorado.

Energy Resource Center may be one of the most surprising local non-profits. For 40 years, they have helped low-income families upgrade to more energy-efficient homes, thus lowering their utility bill, making their housing more affordable overall, decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing the draw on Martin Drake. Today, they work in 27 counties across Colorado with a mission to “erase energy poverty in Colorado.” Listen as we talk to their Development Director, Mike Mazzola, about the organization, where it is headed, and how you can help them make Colorado a more sustainable place to live, work, and play. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-little-london-show/message
Colorado Springs Utilities has committed to closing the coal-fired portions of the Martin Drake Power Plant by 2023 -12 years earlier than originally planned – and investing significantly more in renewable energy. The Ray Nixon plant, south of the city, will be converted to non-carbon resources by 2030.
On this episode, we chat with top head of the AAU, Martin Drake about the true importance of judging, criteria, and the necessity of it to keep the classes and categories relevant. Without adherence to the criteria of the respective classes and the judging of them, confusion can arise quite quickly. Stay tuned to make sure you know what’s what and what to expect if or when you step on stage in the different natural organizations
JEFF BOSLEY – GREEN BERET TO HOLLYWOOD Jeff Bosley has faced tougher challenges than trying to make it big as an actor. He has served as a Green Beret medic and a firefighter so his “spectrum of suck” is probably wider that others in Hollywood. Like most of his generation, Jeff grew up playing with GI Joes and watching action films. He began his college career studying medicine and taking a few acting courses, but military service was always in the back of his mind. When 9/11 happened it gnawed at his conscious so much that he enlisted even though he was almost 30 years old. Special Forces were his goal but the Marine recruiter’s door was locked so he went down the hall to the Army. Jeff became a Green Beret medic and served 7 years before an injury forced him to forego re-enlistment. Jeff returned to his Colorado Springs home and began working as a firefighter. His truck company was awarded the Medal of Valor for their actions fighting the Martin Drake power plant fire. Jeff had been a firefighter for two years but acting was still on his mind when he heard a graduation speech delivered by Jim Carey; “So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality.” Three days later Jeff Bosley moved to Los Angeles. Reflecting his Green Beret training, Jeff has gone “all in” pursuing an acting career by living, eating, and breathing acting. He credits this attitude for securing “hundreds more” auditions than some of his peers. Jeff is 6’5″ and there have been two instances where his height caused problems with screen time. His goal is to get leading man roles so someday the director will have to adjust to HIM. Help Jeff secure his breakthrough role by joining the #BosleyForReacher campaign! TAKEAWAY: “We all rise together”
