Effective managers need a good relationship with HR. But HR may be the hardest staff organization to have a good relationship with, because their incentives are often misaligned with everyday managers. Even if you have an "HR Business Partner," they work for someone else, and probably support other managers. This isn't inherently bad, but a smart manager knows to work with them, while understanding the challenges.

The government and the people and the enterprises are working really hard to get people to come here and try out this country. Take the risk on Vietnam. It's fun, it's exciting.  It's relatively inexpensive enough for you to start a business, and if it fails, you can try again. It's not a big deal. If you want to move your family here, the schools are great, and if it doesn't work out, you can go back to your country.  But I think now is a great time, because the next 10 years, there'll be a lot of economic growth and opportunities for you to take a risk and a chance on Vietnam

It's very good. It's serving us very well. It has its own peculiarities, and the better we allow ourselves to be friends and to be more aware of what it is which means to be yourself . But yourself is your physiological counterpart that empowers and enables you to be and to think and everything. The more you allow yourself and to be okay with it, including all the darkness, like procrastination as an example, or just the hesitation or maybe doubts or anything. But you are okay with that, and you are not over judging yourself. But befriending all of the aspects, including this, also the human, hesitant and dark ones, then you become more of a mastering your existence, rather than being a victim of human nature as it has been evolving.

Over the years, I gained invaluable experience working with renowned brands such as Maurice Malone, P-H-A-T Farm, and others before launching my own brand, Pure Players, in the late 90s and early 2000s. I went on to establish 1020 Blues and secured licensing deals with major companies like Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Remy Martin, and Nayak. I also developed TRPL, a brand deeply connected to the hip-hop scene, collaborating with many prominent rappers. My career has taken me across the globe, including eight years in China. Where I focused on footwear and clothing manufacturing. For the past four years, I've been based in Vietnam, where we're expanding our operations. We're planning to open facilities and freestanding retail shops that not only offer apparel but also contribute to re-gentrifying local neighborhoods. Our most recent and exciting venture is the launch of Soul Alley, a brand that embodies the fusion of cultures and the spirit of innovation that has driven my career.  We talked about the following and other items Early Career in Fashion and Business Transition to Asia and Business Expansion Life in Vietnam and Business Insights Challenges and Opportunities in the Footwear Industry Cultural Exchange and Business Strategies Reflections on Hip Hop and Cultural Influence Future of Business and Technology Factory Visit and Production Challenges Global Fashion Trends and IP Theft Design Process and Market Dynamics Sustainability and Textile Waste Affordability and Market Strategy Opening a Factory in Vietnam Quality Control and Market Trust Finding Customers and Building a Brand Innovation and Manufacturing Personal Growth and Influence Future of Vietnam and Personal Goals Travel and Luggage Preferences Cultural Awareness and Social Responsibility Personal Reflections and Social Observations Daily Routine and Efficiency Advice  Daniel's Social Media Daniel's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/danielshaw-footwearspecialist/ Daniel's Advice Don't ever let anybody tell you you can't do something. I'm using myself as a guinea pig to that, because I came from Brooklyn. Grew up in the 90s. I lived in Vietnam, China, Korea, several other places and countries.  If you asked 100 people, they would have told you that this wasn't supposed to happen. So the journey, the destination is unknown. The journey is fucking dope. I'm staying on it, rocking it until the wheels fall off. You know, life is good. Life is good.

Rebroadcast note: We're hard at work recording a brand new miniseries for January, so this week we're resharing one this episode from our Future of HR miniseries. As we've worked with companies over the last year to reimagine their HR departments, we've seen this episode's ideas and lessons about evolving the HRBP even more important in practice. So take a listen with some fresh ears, and we'll see in two weeks with a brand new episode. The role of HR Business Partner is often a tale of two experiences. On the one hand, HRBPs are some of the most empathetic and passionate people you'll ever meet. On the other hand, they're stuck on the hamster wheel of busywork, bouncing from crisis to crisis without the authority to prioritize their energy—and without the respect from leadership to make a real difference. Look up “burnout” in the dictionary and odds are you'll find a picture of an HRBP. In this miniseries, Brave New Work's Rodney Evans is joined by friend-of-the-pod and Ready OG Sam Spurlin to dive into how HR can become more resilient, efficient, and equitable. Today on episode 5, they explore how this critical role took a hard left turn from it's intended purpose, what its future-of-work glow-up (hello, HR Business Coach) could look like, and how HR Business Coaches + Mission-Based Teaming = unlimited potential. Recently, people talk a lot about Gen Z or younger people.  How they have different evaluations on how important the nine to five job is to them. What are the boundaries that they draw with their employer? They're very hard working and I can see that deep down inside, with all the differences that each generation has and all the differences that they have that we all talk about. On 13 November, South East Technological University (SETU) proudly welcomed early career researchers to the third PROMOTE Project training session, an initiative involving four partner universities to provide guidance on career progression for female researchers at the early stages of their careers. The event aimed to showcase the wealth of skills and experience researchers bring to diverse sectors, both within and outside academia, and to inspire attendees to explore a range of career opportunities. Dr Allison Kenneally, Vice President for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at SETU, opened the session by underscoring the importance of retaining women in research and emphasised the transformative role of the PROMOTE project. She encouraged participants to engage with the PROMOTE online platform and reflected on the critical role of mentorship, including peer-to-peer mentoring, throughout a research career. A career panel offered valuable insights into the professional journeys of its members, illustrating how academic research experience can shape varied career paths. Panellists, including Dr Geraldine Canny, Dr Aisling O'Neill, Dr Denise McGrath, Dr Luciana Herda, and Dr Blanca Suarez-Bilbao, discussed key topics such as identifying personal values and goals, balancing work with family life, and practical strategies for working parents. The importance of mentoring, networking, and leveraging available supports was also highlighted. Reflecting on the event, Dr. Geraldine Canny, Head of Research at SETU, stated, "The PROMOTE training session exemplifies our commitment to fostering an inclusive research environment. By equipping early career female researchers with the necessary tools and networks, we are paving the way for a more equitable and innovative research community." Dr Michael Scriney from the Insight Research Ireland Centre for Data Analytics at Dublin City University provided an overview of the PROMOTE online platform. The platform offers early career researchers access to career progression resources, networking opportunities, and support, all designed to empower researchers in advancing their careers. The event also featured a career skills workshop on transferable skills, led by SETU's HR Business Partner for Research, Eimear Fitzpatrick. The session focused on translating research skills for new sectors and crafting compelling applications. Eimear shared practical advice, emphasising the importance of presenting research experience in a format that resonates with employers, ensuring researchers feel confident and prepared for new opportunities. The day concluded with in-person networking, interactive discussions, and resource-sharing to foster a supportive culture as researchers transition to the next phase of their professional lives. The PROMOTE project is funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and supported by the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics. Partner institutions include Maynooth University (MU), South East Technological University (SETU), Munster Technological University (MTU), University of Limerick (UL), Dublin City University (DCU), University College Cork (UCC), and the University of Galway. While in Vietnam however, he came to love the country, the culture and the career, and decided to stay.  He progressed from teaching to academic development and management, but decided after 8 years it was time to build something that would make a difference on a much larger scale. He had seen that Vietnam was a country of tremendous potential, with people who were creative, pragmatic and ambitious, but didn't yet know enough about business to do the opportunity justice, so he took an MBA. During this time he also started learning more about 3d printing and design, and becoming involved with the local maker community which opened his eyes to the technological possibilities becoming available. Shortly after graduating he met Akshay, a representative of a venture studio called Alley51, at a networking event. After talking about 3d printing, maker spaces, and entrepreneurship for several hours, Rafael was invited to pitch Alley51 his startup idea and Vulcan Augmetics was born. In the years since Vulcan was founded Rafael has continued to learn and adapt, incorporating new technology in the most efficient way, and ensuring that the company has built a brand and product that is aligned with real user requirements. He first learned to draw Ninja Turtles from his siblings and was hooked ever since. Years would pass and he would continue his love of art all the way up into college, but life has a way of taking your so called plans and flipping them on its head. Joining the military at the age of 17 to help provide funds in a small town that offered little in the way of employment, he would eventually be called into active duty forcing him to drop out of college. After a tour in Iraq, he attempted to get back to what he had known all his life but discovered quickly that it was easier said than done. PTSD formed a mental block between his creativity and himself which hindered him for over a decade from producing even the simplest of art forms.  Fast forward 13 years and after many attempts, he would produce his first painting in over a decade. It was a hard fought journey but he has yet to look back on the past that would keep his beloved art away from the public eye. He now uses his creativity and imagination to create one of a kind abstract pieces filled with vibrant colors and a semi realistic interpretation of his surroundings and the African American culture, all from a black man's perspective. Creativity, Positivity, and Individuality. Having spent an entire lifetime moving in countless global directions, from starting an international humanitarian nonprofit organization, to fronting a touring punk band, to speaking on stages in twenty-seven countries, Greg had no idea that severe ADHD was behind his journey until later in life. With that realization, he began to trace his journey backwards, arriving at seeing a single juggling ball in flight when he was a child. That moment of clarity was the key to unlock his life's work. He explores what focus means to each of us, and the effect it has on our psychology. In his Build a Better Now® keynote, he asks us to consider what our own single juggling ball actually is. We are all deeply affected by distractions amidst the modern rat race. People everywhere are overworked, anxious, and entirely stressed out. We need to be focusing today on today. Greg shares new angles on how focus builds self-esteem. He explains how increased self esteem affects how we show up, as a leader, as a teammate, and as a communicator. Greg transforms audiences and has a good time while doing it. He shares ideas about focus learned and earned over decades of interaction and engagement with people from literally all around the world. Then, we get to know more about Kara: how she ended up at Northwestern Mutual and what her job entails. We also discuss the importance of workforce planning, the departments that are responsible for it, and the role of recruiters in becoming part of business strategy and workforce planning conversations. To close off, we explore how the evolution of HR has added to the pains of the industry. Be sure to listen until the very end for some helpful advice on how to send an email in French.    Key Points From This Episode:   Welcoming Kara Hughes as she answers a recruiting question from one of Rob's friends.
