Paystack, Piggyvest, Moniepoint — The Investor Behind Africa's Biggest Exits Tells All | Kola Aina

What does it actually take to back Africa's most consequential companies — and what does it cost you personally to get there? Kola Aina is the founder and managing partner of Ventures Platform, the fund behind Paystack, Piggyvest, Moniepoint, Lemfi, Omni Retail, Raenest, Verto, and over 90 other startups. Over a decade, the firm has supported more than 140 founders and helped drive over $1 billion in follow-on capital. But this conversation is not about the portfolio. It is about the judgment, the values, the failures, and the philosophy that made all of it possible.Kola opens with something most investors never say out loud: he did not come from nothing. He grew up in a comfortable, entrepreneurial family, had a driver and an official car in his early 20s, and was effectively in line to take over a sizable family business with 200 employees. He walked away. That decision — and the painful months that followed, including a period of deep unhappiness and a father who had to find a way to forgive him — is where his real story begins. He talks about what it meant to prove he could do it on his own. The six months he spent in the DMV area in the US networking at events just to find a co-founder. The hundreds of rejections he got trying to raise equity and debt for his enterprise technology company Emergent Platforms. The moment he decided to start Ventures Platform in 2016 — not with a grand plan, but as an experiment, funded entirely by his own family's nest egg because he had gotten so many no's from the world and wanted to prove that you could invest in young people and they could build great things. He breaks down the three common traits he has seen in every successful African business he has backed. First, market-creating innovation — businesses that convert non-consumers into consumers, because the vast majority of people in Africa cannot access the standard version of goods and services. Second, communal business models — the ones where multiple stakeholders benefit, not just the company. The Moniepoint example here is striking. Third, deep local context — the kind you cannot replicate from a desk in the Valley. He also explains why picking great companies is not actually the secret to Ventures Platform's success. The real edge, he says, is in what happens after the check is written. Being the investor that founders call when things go wrong. Replying emails. Showing up when the business is struggling, not just when there is a term sheet on the table. He calls it retention versus acquisition — and it is the reason the best deals keep coming to them.He is brutally honest about the mistakes. He compromised his own principles twice — backing founders he knew were not good people because the traction was too compelling. Both investments blew up. Both companies failed not because they ran out of money or missed product-market fit, but because of what he calls founder suicide. That lesson is now non-negotiable at the firm.He talks about how to find a co-founder, what a prenup for business partnerships actually looks like, why the Nigerian demographic of 250 million people is one of the most dangerous numbers in African tech, and why staying in the game across vintages matters more than being the best picker in any single year. And he closes with the one lesson he would pass on to anyone: in Yoruba, they say "eniyan ni aṣọ mi" meaning people are my cover. He does not believe he can ever be poor. Not because of money, but because of the depth of the relationships he has built and invested in over 20 years. This is one of the most substantive, honest conversations about African venture capital and long-term institution building that we have had on Founders Connect. Whether you are a founder, an operator, an investor, or someone trying to understand how Africa's tech ecosystem actually works — this is essential listening.

Share a commentA God who cries at a graveside and prays through sweat and sorrow isn't distant from our pain—and that truth frames one of the most breathtaking true stories of mission and redemption. We start where many believers secretly live: wondering whether tears are wasted and whether apparent failure means God has gone silent. From the compassion of Jesus at Lazarus's tomb to the anguish of Gethsemane, we ground the journey in a Savior who validates grief and transforms it into hope.Against that backdrop, we walk with David and Svea Flood into the Belgian Congo: malaria, shut gates, and a single boy allowed to sell eggs at their tent. Svea shares the gospel with him; soon after, she dies following childbirth. David, shattered, buries her on the hill and abandons faith, convinced the mission failed. Their newborn, Aina, is adopted, brought to the United States, and grows up with only fragments of her story. Years later, a Swedish magazine lands in her mailbox with a photo of a simple cross: “Svea Flood.” Translated lines tell of the boy who became a teacher, won his village, and helped plant a thriving church. What unfolds next is restoration. Aina finds her father in Sweden, bitter and broken. She tells him the truth: the seed did not die in vain. Hope returns; grace does its quiet work. Then, at a London conference, Aina meets the very man her mother led to Christ—now a national church leader representing more than a hundred thousand baptized believers. Together they journey back to the hill, to the grave beneath the palm, and to a village alive with faith. This is a story for anyone who has sown in tears and seen nothing bloom—yet. It's about unseen seeds, long timelines, and the God who weeps with us while turning loss into a harvest beyond our imagination. Can Forest build on the 0-0 draw with Arsenal and confirm qualification in the Europa League? ⚽Football Prizes⚽ MASSIVE GIVEAWAY!: https://footballprizes.co.uk/club-competitions/nottingham-forest/ Nottingham Forest head to the Estádio Municipal de Braga this Thursday with a massive opportunity to break into the Europa League top eight! After a resilient 0-0 draw against Arsenal, Sean Dyche has his side looking more organized than ever, and a win in Portugal could all but secure an automatic spot in the Round of 16. Wolfie breaks down the tactical battle ahead as we face a Braga side that currently sits two points above us in the table. While Braga have been impressive in Europe this season, they'll be without their suspended top scorer Rodrigo Zalazar—could this be the perfect time for the Tricky Trees to strike and make European history? The big talking point for this trip is the starting XI, with several key men like Ola Aina and Omari Hutchinson ineligible for the Europa League squad. With Chris Wood still sidelined, all eyes are on Igor Jesus to continue his "cup specialist" form, having already bagged four goals in this competition. The midfield selection remains the biggest headache for Dyche: will he recall Douglas Luiz to provide that Brazilian flair and control, or will the grit and leadership of Ryan Yates be preferred to combat Braga's technical midfield? We also look at the defensive reshuffle, with Nicolo Savona expected to deputize at right-back in what will be a hostile environment. This is arguably our biggest game of the season so far, and we want to know what you're thinking in the comments! Should Dyche go for the "double pivot" of Sangaré and Anderson, or is it time for Douglas Luiz to show why he belongs in the starting XI? Can Igor Jesus continue his incredible European goal-scoring run? Let us know your score predictions and who gets your vote for the starting midfield—let's keep the European dream alive! #nffc #braga #europaleague Learn more about your ad choices. Motherhood often feels like a season of losing yourself, but what if it's actually the most profound season of becoming? In this heart-deep conversation, Ginny welcomes back one of the podcast's most beloved guests, Leah Boden, for her third appearance. Together they explore what Charlotte Mason called the “mind gallery”—the inner storehouse of beauty, story, memory, art, and truth that sustains us through every season of life. Leah shares how the threads of our identity don't disappear during the exhausting years of raising little ones; they simply lie dormant, waiting for the right time to bloom. Through her own journey—from homeschooling mother to author of living biographies on C.S. Lewis, Charlotte Mason, and Princess Ina—Leah offers a hopeful reminder that the passions you once loved are still there, ready to reemerge as gifts to both you and your children. This episode is a gentle call to build a home rich with sensory experiences, stories, poetry, music, and nature, elements that shape not only a child's education but their entire inner life. Leah and Ginny discuss how reading biographies breathes humanity into history, how nature observation strengthens a child's understanding of literature, and how beauty quietly grounds us during seasons of change. They unpack the remarkable story of Princess Aina, showing how courage, displacement, and hope weave together to form a life filled with meaning. Whether you're in the trenches or looking toward the second half of life, this conversation will help you rediscover wonder, reclaim your own mind gallery, and create a feast of learning that nourishes your whole family. BIO Isabella Young (B.Ed., M.Ed. pre.) felt most at home in Nature from childhood. Fueled by her experiences of the healing properties of the natural world, she became a pioneer in development of therapeutic Outdoor Adventure programs in Victoria, Australia until personal tragedy struck. Widowed, pregnant, and with her young son, Isabella began a healing journey that spans three decades. She has crisscrossed three continents under three different names, undertaking pilgrimages, retreats, shamanic journeys, and vision quests. She lived in tents, tipis, and ashrams, including eight years in a messianic cult as the wife of the ‘guru,' who groomed then murdered her son. His murder broke her free from cult programming, and she escaped to Hawaii. Through her relentless devotion to healing and seeking truth and freedom, Isabella is now thriving and writing books to share wisdom from her experiences, the Aina, and other teachers that supports optimal health, sovereignty, anarchy, and the freedom and future of Humanity.   https://www.amazon.com/stores/Isabella-Young/author/B09Q7MB9MS?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1&qid=1753576207&sr=8-1&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=true
