Full Text of ReadingsWednesday of the Twenty-sixth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 457All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is Saint WenceslausIf saints have been falsely characterized as “other worldly,” the life of Wenceslaus stands as an example to the contrary: He stood for Christian values in the midst of the political intrigues which characterized 10th-century Bohemia. Wenceslaus was born in 907 near Prague, son of the Duke of Bohemia. His saintly grandmother, Ludmilla, raised him and sought to promote him as ruler of Bohemia in place of his mother, who favored the anti-Christian factions. Ludmilla was eventually murdered, but rival Christian forces enabled Wenceslaus to assume leadership of the government. His rule was marked by efforts toward unification within Bohemia, support of the Church, and peace-making negotiations with Germany, a policy which caused him trouble with the anti-Christian opposition. His brother Boleslav joined in the plotting, and in September of 929 invited Wenceslaus to Alt Bunglou for the celebration of the feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian. On the way to Mass, Boleslav attacked his brother, and in the struggle, Wenceslaus was killed by supporters of Boleslav. Although his death resulted primarily from political upheaval, Wenceslaus was hailed as a martyr for the faith, and his tomb became a pilgrimage shrine. He is hailed as the patron of the Bohemian people and of the former Czechoslovakia. Reflection “Good King Wenceslaus” was able to incarnate his Christianity in a world filled with political unrest. While we are often victims of violence of a different sort, we can easily identify with his struggle to bring harmony to society. The call to become involved in social change and in political activity is addressed to Christians; the values of the gospel are sorely needed today. Urbanisme, société, transports, loisirs : d'Islamabad à Tunis en passant par Rio de Janeiro, les correspondants de RFI et nos invités présentent la vie quotidienne de nos voisins. Troisième volet de notre série estivale «vivre en ville», direction le Brésil à Rio de Janeiro. Ludmilla Figueiredo is a research data and code curator coming from a background in ecology and conservational biodiversity. In this episode, she talks with Jo about the implementation of open science principles in the fast-paced and heavy workload researchers must handle. I have completed a Bachelor's degree in Biology in Brazil, followed by a Master's in Rennes, France, and finally, my PhD here in Würzburg, Germany. I focused my studies on ecological modeling, because I find that Ecology has a lot of contingencies at times, and models help me understand it better. I have completed a postdoc studying the payment of extinction debts at the Ecosystem modeling group of the University of Würzburg, and, as of March 2022, I work as a data and code curator at the Data and Code Unit of the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig. Among my duties, I have to support researchers in the application of Open Science and FAIR principles. I am pretty sure that my participation in the “Freies Wissen” open science mentoring program (2020/2021 Wikimedia Deutschland) was crucial to my success in this new position. Ludmilla, a widow aged eighty-two, has declared her home in the Czech Republic: “Embassy of the Kingdom of Heaven,” saying, “My home is an extension of Christ’s kingdom.” She welcomes strangers and friends who are hurting and in need with loving hospitality, sometimes providing food and a place to sleep—always with a compassionate and prayerful spirit. Relying on the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to help her care for her visitors, she delights in the ways God answers their prayers. Ludmilla serves Jesus through opening her home and heart, in contrast to the prominent religious leader at whose home Jesus ate one Sabbath. Jesus told this teacher of the law that he should welcome “the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind” to his home—and not those who could repay him (Luke 14:13). While Jesus’s remarks imply that the Pharisee hosted Jesus out of pride (v. 12), Ludmilla, so many years later, invites people to her home so she can be “an instrument of God’s love and His wisdom.” Serving others with humility is one way we can be “representatives of the kingdom of heaven,” as Ludmilla says. Whether or not we can provide a bed for strangers, we can put the needs of others before our own in different and creative ways. How will we extend God’s kingdom in our part of the world today?
