The new Hurricanes board chair is determined to turn around the books of the struggling Super Rugby franchise. Developer Malcolm Gillies has acquired the 50% stake in the club, offloaded by the Wellington Rugby Union to balance its own books. The franchise has collectively lost $4 million in the past three seasons. Gillies told Heather du Plessis Allan it's a good investment. He says there's a lot of untapped potential, but there's certainly a lot of things to do. Tony Philp, who recently departed as the club's general manager of rugby, will assume the interim CEO role. Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. Please note: the sound quality on this recording is not as clear as usual. We apologise for this and thank you for your understanding. This episode continues an intergenerational exploration of the Aldridge family, turning the focus to Kate Madikane. It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves - Helen Burrows and Louise GilliesFollowing earlier studies of the Aldridge family genogram, Helen Burrows and Louise Gillies now turn to Kate, the unconventional middle child. Unlike Debbie and Adam, whose lives are grounded in farming, or Alice with her equestrian focus, Kate has always walked her own path. From a troubled adolescence to a succession of difficult relationships, she now appears to be moving into a more settled phase. This paper explores what makes Kate who she is. From a psychological angle, her behaviour displays traits that echo ADHD characteristics. Yet knowing Kate, she would likely reject such categorisation. The authors therefore also consider alternative frameworks she might embrace herself, examining how her strongly ‘New Age' outlook shapes her decisions, her relationships, and her role within Ambridge life.Helen Burrows Helen is a retired consultant psychiatrist who specialised in child and adolescent mental health. She has a long-standing interest in how early experiences shape personality and behaviour, and enjoys applying psychological frameworks to the lives of Ambridge residents. She has been a listener to The Archers for decades and values the Academic Archers project as a way of combining professional insight with fandom.Louise Gillies Louise has a background in clinical psychology and education. She has worked in both NHS and academic settings, with a focus on neurodiversity and the ways in which different psychological theories can shed light on everyday lives. A dedicated Archers fan, she brings both professional expertise and listener curiosity to her contributions to Academic Archers. If you enjoy our work and would like to support Academic Archers, you can Buy Us a Coffee – buymeacoffee.com/academicarchers.

In a world where dementia affects millions, the narrative often leans toward loss and isolation. But what if communities could rewrite that story—one where people living with dementia not only survive but thrive, connected and included? That's the heart of the Dementia Friendly Nevada (DFNV) initiative, and few voices capture its urgency and hope like Casey Venturini, director of DFNV and a passionate advocate shaped by personal experience. In an interview with Steve Gurney of the Positive Aging Community, Venturini shared his journey from family care partner to national leader in dementia inclusion. His story isn't just inspirational; it's a call to action for communities everywhere. From Personal Loss to Professional PurposeVenturini's entry into this work was deeply personal. Growing up in a multigenerational household, he was as close to his grandparents as his parents. At age 11, his grandfather was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, which significantly impacted his final years. The diagnosis felt like a door slamming shut. The community seemed to withdraw, leaving his grandfather isolated in a slow, tragic decline—mirroring the Hollywood tropes of inevitable goodbye. This revelation transformed his view. Today, his grandmother lives with dementia in New York, supported by a network that embraces possibility over pity. "She's not suffering with dementia. She is living her life with dementia," Venturini explained. It's a stark contrast to his grandfather's experience, underscoring how knowledge and community support can turn challenge into chapters of growth. This grassroots approach recognizes that dementia-friendly work isn't one-size-fits-all. Each community brings unique strengths and needs, making the movement a "collaborative learning effort" under the national umbrella of Dementia Friendly America, which has thrived for nearly a decade. The Core Values: An Ethical Roadmap for InclusionAt the soul of DFNV are eight shared values, collaboratively crafted with people living with dementia, care partners, and professionals. Presented to the Nevada Legislature in 2017 by someone living with dementia, these principles frame dementia-friendly efforts as "citizenship work"—calling for full societal engagement, not just dementia-related programming.People can live well with dementia. Hope is foundational; without it, opportunities for well-being vanish.Partnering with people living with dementia and honoring each individual's lived experience opens a world of possibilities. People with lived experience of dementia are the true experts, in this work, co-leading—not just participating in—dementia-friendly and inclusive initiatives.Recognizing, validating, and responding to all forms of expression as meaningful communication supports well-being. Communication evolves; assuming intent behind every word and action builds deeper connections. When supporting a person living with dementia, we should always strive to see the world from their perspective.People living with dementia have the right to freedom. Diagnosis doesn't strip away autonomy; communities must safeguard choice.People living with dementia can grow and thrive. A diagnosis marks a new chapter, a comma not a period, and a life with dementia can be a life of meaning, growth, and joy with the right support. Proactive supports and services reduce the need for reactive interventions. Upstream conversations across sectors prevent crises and cut costs.A dementia-inclusive community is a strong community; everyone needs community, and communities need everyone. Inclusion benefits all, fostering connected, resilient societies.Venturini's work emphasizes collaboration, echoing a key model from Dupuis, Gillies, Carson, et al. (2012): the "Authentic Partnerships" framework. For more information visit https://dfamerica.org/

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of singers who both look to classic sounds for inspiration—and one of whom happens to also be the creator of one of the biggest animated shows ever. It's Liz Gillies and Seth MacFarlane. Now even if you don't know his name, you almost certainly know Seth MacFarlane's work and voice. He's the creator of the animated comedy Family Guy, which will enter its 24th season next year. He also co-created American Dad and The Cleveland Show, plus directed the movie Ted, among many other TV and film accomplishments. If that weren't enough, MacFarlane has a second career as a musician, a pursuit born out of his love for big band music of days gone by: It's not a lark or a joke, either. MacFarlane is a serious student of classic songwriters, which led to his tenth and latest album, Lush Life: The Lost Sinatra Arrangements. As that title suggests, MacFarlane was given access to a massive number of songs that had been arranged—often by big names—for Frank Sinatra to sing, but that had never actually been recorded. MacFarlane recruited an A-team to get them in shape, and he sang the hell out of them. Check out “I Never Felt This Way Before” right here. The other half of today's conversation is MacFarlane's friend and sometime musical collaborator Liz Gillies, who's also a multi-hyphenate. You may have seen her on TV—going all the way back to Nickelodeon—in movies or on Broadway. She even provided voices on a couple of MacFarlane's shows. But the two really found their working spark during the pandemic with Songs From Home, and that collaboration continued in 2023 with a holiday album called We Wish You The Merriest. As you'll see from this conversation, Gillies and MacFarlane have a friendly rapport. In this lively conversation, Gillies grills MacFarlane on the origins of Lush Life, a fascinating story in which MacFarlane is deeply invested. They also talk about how Liz likes to go out when they're on tour but Seth prefers the comfort of a hotel room, how to pronounce Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and more. Stick around for the end, when they get a little silly coming up with podcast names. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Seth MacFarlane and Liz Gillies for chatting. This week on GRIT: The Real Estate Growth Mindset, Brian Charlesworth is joined by Jace Gillies, team leader at Utah Life. They talk about growth, leadership, and building a team that performs with consistency. From closing 29 deals in his first year to now leading over 90 agents, Jace shares what it looks like to scale while keeping culture intact. Jace talks about his start in real estate, coming from warehouse work and having no idea how to write a contract. A quick ask for help turned into joining a six-agent team and earning six figures in year one. “I thought I couldn't make money on a team, but I had no idea what teams even offered,” he says. The conversation moves into Jace's transition from top producer to team leader and what it took to turn around the Salt Lake office. With systems missing and accountability lacking, Jace lost nearly half the agents in his first month. “They didn't want to work. They didn't want to be held accountable,” he explains. But with daily effort, recruiting, and buy-in, that office went on to close over $100M. Brian asks Jace about recruiting, and Jace shares the script and mindset shift that helped him add 31 agents in one quarter. He highlights how he uses social proof, automation, and consistent follow-up to find the right people. “I finally believed we were the best place for agents. Once I owned that, everything changed,” he says. They close out by discussing agent productivity and how Sisu plays a central role. From onboarding to coaching to contests, everything is built around tracking what matters. “I don't know how to coach without numbers. Sisu gives us everything,” Jace adds. Top Takeaways: (4:16) Value of teams & shifting mindset (9:35) Taking over the salt lake office (14:09) Mental shift in recruiting (18:24) Tracking for predictable closings (25:57) Sales contests & team culture (29:50) Leading by example in real time (33:26) Impact of sisu on everything If you're a team leader looking for structure or an agent trying to grow without guessing, this episode is packed with examples of how to do both. Students often think of science as disconnected pieces of information rather than a narrative that challenges their thinking, requires them to develop evidence-based explanations for the phenomena under investigation, and communicate their ideas in discipline-specific language as to why certain solutions to a problem work. In Enquiry-based Science Education (CRC Press, 2020), Robyn M. Gillies provides teachers in primary and junior secondary school with different evidence-based strategies they can use to teach inquiry science in their classrooms. In this episode, Brad W. Minton and career story coach Steph Gillies discuss the challenges faced by young professionals in navigating career anxiety and the pressure to specialize. They explore the importance of embracing multi-passionate career paths and how to craft a compelling career story that reflects one's authentic self. Steph shares insights on resume writing, the relevance of diverse experiences, and strategies for presenting oneself effectively in job applications. The conversation emphasizes that every experience is valuable and can be framed to highlight transferable skills, encouraging listeners to embrace their unique journeys. Key takeaways: Young professionals often feel anxiety and pressure in their careers. The traditional notion of specializing in one career is outdated. Most people's career paths are not linear; they are often messy. It's important to normalize non-linear career paths. Resumes should highlight relevant experiences, including volunteer work. Education can be framed as work experience for new grads. Authenticity is key in job applications and interviews. Having multiple resumes can help tailor your story for different roles. Every experience can be made relevant to your career goals. You can change your career at any age. Guest Info: Steph Gillies is a Career Story Coach, focused on helping multi-passionate professionals embrace their authenticity and design their career story. Having had 32 jobs in 15 years, Steph mastered the job search process and gained valuable insights into how to align passions with career paths. After being laid off from what she thought was her dream job in 2020, she started resume writing and career coaching. Since then, she has helped over 1000 people discover their purpose and create a career story that truly reflects who they are.

Over time, the discussion of nature vs nurture has always been a hefty debate. Nature are things that you are born with, your genes, hereditary. While nurture is your environment and how that shapes you into he person you become. But as for Sean Vincent Gilles, he believes he was born to be a murderer. Ever since he was a young toddler he had urges and a fascination with death. As a kids, he enjoyed seeing others crying and felt happy when he was getting yelled at the bad things he did. And at 12 years old he would make an unsuccessful attempt at murdering his cousin just because “I wanted to feel up on her breasts”. Sean would then go on to discover the internet and people who were just like him. Dark web videos of people interested in necrophilia, blood, snuff films, etc. And it wasn't until he was 37 years-old when Sean would claim his first victim, and that would mark the start of his killing spree of 8 more innocent woman. Murdering them in the most brutal and sickening of ways. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
