Today marks the start of a special series of shows in collaboration with island radio station Openlab and Tedx Dalt Vila ahead of the event in March. We hear from Regenerative Architecht Finn Harries who created the designs for Juntos Farm to transform our food system on the island. He says it used to be a place which created beef and hamburgers but now the farm has completely been rebuilt and is well on the way to changing the fact that only 2% of the food grown here is consumer here and most of it is imported. Juntos has become a place for community and gatherings and talks as well as food production and its is Finns first role as an architecht straight out of university. In his TED x Talk he touches on how this position came from a feeling that perhaps designing and building more place and spaces on planet earth didn´t quite feel right after all that he had experienced. You can hear him on stage on March 29th here in Ibiza at the Palacio De Congresso. Tickets are available here. Catch the radio show Tuesdays at 6pm on Openlab.fm
Martin Drake ripped up the rule book and invited the "dynamic duo" that is Gemma Ellison and myself onto his podcast, Is This Room Free? We're not HR.But we are all about people. Russ (DJ Dribbler) lives in Ibiza, DJs at Pikes, Paradise Lost, Ibiza Sonica, OpenLab, WOM, Standard Hotel and Malanga Cafe. He has written two novels which have achieved cult status on the underground scene, "Harry's Kebabs" and its sequel, "The Take Away". He was a resident DJ at Pure in Edinburgh, Tour Dj for Orbital in the 90s, spent 10 years djing in NYC, was a resident on Amsterdam's Red Light Radio for 4 years and is now a resident at Pikes. "I met Ken (Slothboogie) recently, when he was over DJing at Pikes. We spoke about Edinburgh. He knew of Pure. We chatted about the influence and contribution from Edinburgh in the 90s to today's goings on. It is a vast diaspora of artists, producers, writers, record shops, distributors, DJs, promoters and punters worldwide. I live in Ibiza now, I've lived in many countries and cities, and I'm lucky enough to hear and play alongside some world-class DJs every week. You always keep learning. I spent years hounding black music from the USA, and then suddenly, the penny dropped with Americana. It was all down to JIM, aka Jim, aka Ron Basejam. The harmony and melody and pounding soulful drive to the music, it had it all. I play that in the first hour. In the second section of the mix, I play a lot of tracks sent to me by friends. Andy Kidd lands mixes every year and they go through DJs here like a dose of the measles. Random House Project is also worth a mention this year for the Slave edit on there and other remixes. It's great to be able to share them with you."
Well, a whole nine months since our last isolatedmix, we return in style… Scottish producer Lord Of The Isles has been high on rotation for me for about ten years now, with a string of electronic EPs across labels such as Mule Musiq, Permanent Vacation, Phonica and ESP Institue. Never guessing where he was going to push next, Neil has remained a bit of an enigma in style over the years and more recently, has captured hearts with an emotional, Poem-infused EP on Whities (more on that below) and in December just gone, a more ambient-leaning debut on Lapsus. The result is an artist that appeals to the electronic music fan in more ways than one. An artist you grow attached to as you walk alongside an ego-less evolution, welcoming new approaches and experimentation, always eager to see what he takes on next. While Neil is obviously adept a putting together a DJ mix [check], we're even more fortunate that Neil has taken a much more dedicated route to his mix contribution, with a 100% unreleased mix of his own material. ~Hi Neil, being a man of the outdoors it seems, where are you right now and what are you enjoying, outside of the music world? Not in the wilds at the moment, unfortunately! But I will be soon. I'm taking some recording equipment up north in a few weeks to hopefully finish my next album. Outside of writing music, I'm enjoying keeping fit and reading. I'm reading Under The Skin by Michael Faber right now for the second time. Subtle Thoughts by Lord Of The Isles Your style is notoriously hard to pin down (which I love), but I'd love to know how you would describe it to anyone new to your music. Deep and melodic maybe? I've always listened to all kinds of music and I've always had a very open mind in that regard. I suppose you are exposed to different things at different times throughout life. What music did you grow up on to influence it? There was a lot of Motown going on in my family very early on, and hearing stuff like Cream and Kate Bush now always transports me back in time when I hear it, as does a lot of soul, hip hop, and indie from 80s and 90s. Way too many to mention!! Growing up in the nineties, Acid House, Detroit techno, and Chicago House all played major roles in influencing my style, as did dub, dub techno, and all things ambient. Sorry, sounds all so clichéd! But it's true. Night Of The Endless Beyond by Lord Of The Isles You've recorded a more ambient-leaning isolatedmix, and a few of your most recent albums definitely veered this way too. Is this a reflection of your current taste or mood right now, or something else? It's just the way it's come together in the studio past few years, although, I am becoming aware that there's now a lot of people now that think all I do is ambient music. I have another album coming later this year that was completed over a year ago which is also ambient, but that will be the last release like that for a while I think, as the music I'm working on at the moment is definitely not ambient! Whities 029 by Lord Of The Isles Your Whities EP with Ellen Renton's vocals is definitely a personal favorite of mine. You also sampled Carl Sagan in your latest album. Can you tell me a bit about your approach to integrating guest vocals and samples? With Ellen, I write music inspired by her poems. Other vocal samples are usually things I hear in films or documentaries that resonate with me. Growing up listening to artists like the Orb, BOC, and The Black Dog has given me an appreciation for disparate vocal samples. I love the cinematic quality it adds to the atmosphere. Parabolas Of Neon by Lord Of The Isles You have a monthly radio show on Openlab, How do you go about selecting music for the show, or what can people expect? I still buy and collect a lot of music, so it's a great outlet for me to share music I love. You'll hear mostly, electronica, deep house, techno, and breakbeat. Glisk Science EP by Lord Of The Isles Your isolatedmix is 100% unreleased music, so no tracklist here. Can you tell us a bit about how you put it together? It's a bit of a hybrid set - half DJ half live, all unreleased music. It may well be the last ambient thing from me for a while. No plans to release any of it at the moment. Lastly, I read you're a candle fan (as am I) What's your latest scent?!Lol! :) I have a trial tester from an amazing new Scottish aromatherapy brand called àile. They do amazing products and are thinking about doing a candle. It's cedar wood, mandarin, and clove I think. It's great!~ astrangelyisolatedplace · isolatedmix 120 - Lord Of The Isles Listen on Soundcloud or the ASIP Podcast.Download MP3(No tracklist as all unreleased material)Artwork image by Faisal Waheed.Lord Of The Isles Bandcamp | Discogs | Soundcloud

A string orchestra is an orchestra consisting solely of a string section made up of the bowed strings used in Western Classical music. The instruments of such an orchestra are most often the following: the violin, which is divided into first and second violin players (each usually playing different parts), the viola, the cello, and usually, but not always, the double bass.String orchestras can be of chamber orchestra size ranging from between 12 (4 first violins, 3 second violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos and 1 bass = 12) and 21 musicians (6 first violins, 5 second violins, 4 violas, 4 cellos and 2 double basses= 21) sometimes performing without a conductor. Q5.

Summary: In the English language video Maruchi Yoshida, Dipl. Rest, and Dr. Natascha Bagherpour, M.A. are explaining how an archaeological project in Iran developed to a comprehensive program. Starting from the scientific research of the mummies and organic finds from Chehrabad Saltmine in Zanjan, conservational measures are now being carried out to keep the world´s heritage of the saltmummies. The village next to the excavation site is protector of the ancient saltmine. The people of Hamzelooh, however, live a precarious life. They will also be long-term profiteer of the archaeological site as soon as the measures – water supply and economic growths – will be implemented. Additionally, within an Open-Lab project the societies in Iran and Germany will be able – with an easy access – to participate in the projects and take part in the discussions. The continuity of work in difficult times and the success of the patrimonial projects are based on a trustful and amicable cooperation between European and Iranian scientists and local residents. Franco is an event creator at the A House co-working space and a sommelier who naturally compares a city with wine. He will mention the typical picture he would associate with a big and modern city (disclaimer - there are lights in it) and touch upon segregation, which is a big topic to him. Trying to always listen is a key message from Franco along with creating with others for others. Producción: Andres Acevedo y Nicolas Pinzon Guerrero

For today's podcast we are sitting together with the organizers of the Climate Hackathon initiated by Yale University, or the Open Climate Collabathon by Yale Openlab as the official name is. Luka Zrnic, Oliver Bley and Sam Tuke have taken time to give use an insight into what is happening behind the curtains at the event and explained us why this isn't a typical hackathon. "It isn't about competing against each other, but much rather about achieving a common goal while collaborating with each other." says Luka Zrnic president of Net Impact@ESMT Berlin a student club focusing on climate change and effective charity work. In this episode you will learn: * Why if you are a professional coder you can use your skill for good * How the structure of intellectual property looks like in a collaborative project * Which specific problems the Yale OpenLab determined and why * Why this is just one event of many to come The event is taking place all around the world. But only from the 16-17th of November you can participate in person. Afterwards the whole event will continue exclusively online for another week. The goal is to create a global accountability system to track the CO2 emissions for stakeholders in climate change stay accountable against the Paris agreement. If this isn't a worthy cause, I do not know what is. ;)

After the sad passing of musician and composer Robert Miles more than two years ago, we wished to pay our respects, but also massive homage to a man we felt was a radio renegade. As the founder of Openlab.fm, not only did Robert have a beautiful vision when he started the station - at a time when options were limited - to create an alternative place for us to rest our weary ears upon, but, he gave us hope. A hope for exactly the kind of scene we are starting to experience musically on the island now. Through nights like World Unplugged, SoFar Sounds and little impromtpu gigs from Nick Mulvey at La Paloma. Musically the island is opening up. Changing. We wished to unleash this audio, recorded By Jo Youle the presenter of this show in 2014 in Santa Gertrudis, to remind people what OpenLab.fm is about. Remember its roots, its soul and why even now, it still needs help to stay On Air. Robert is widely known for this track, Children, which exploded in 1996 on his album Dreamland. But his connection to the island through music was also linked to so many other aspects, like his creativity, his love of nature, architecture and design. We wanted to celebrate on this podcast the fact Openlab.fm is back on analogue and FM dial this summer in Ibiza, but also to let you know they need help to keep the dream alive. Please Pop onto their website and donate if you can to keep this incredible radio stations output and sound quality high and on air. www.openlab.fm Come follow us on Instagram @theresetrebel Revie us on iTunes if you like todays show.
In this episode, Teri welcomes Mauricio Meza, the Co-Founder of Komodo OpenLab.Mauricio is an experienced professional with MBA and biomedical engineering degrees. He worked as an assistive technology consultant for over a decade recommending assistive technology to individuals with disabilities to complete their home, school and work activities.Komodo OpenLab’s creates technologies that enable simple and easy access to smartphones and tablets for millions of people with mobility impairments, greatly enhancing their work, school and family lives with the rich and dynamic communication and productivity tools these mobile devices provide.Their flagship product, Tecla, is an assistive device that gives people with upper-body mobility impairments the ability to fully access smart devices and technology at a fraction of the cost of traditional assistive devices. Key points from Dr. Desai! What Komodo OpenLab, through Tecla, is doing for people who have mobility issues and how they are leveraging voice to make their lives much easier.Starting Komodo OpenLabHe formed the company with his classmate from Biomedical Engineering School. While working in the assistive technology field, he identified a big need for more accessible mobile technology. They started by making android devices accessible to people with critical disabilities. As technology progressed, they started getting into smart home technologies. They created Tecla to make mainstream technology accessible for those that have limited mobility.Komodo is now 8 years old and has three generations of products. Their latest generation of hardware is Tecla E, and it comes with companion apps for Android and iOS, which provides access to smart home devices. It is an integrated interface where people with mobility issues can have all their devices, and they can control them by blinking, blowing or through their wheel chair controllers.Use CasesTecla connects wirelessly to a person’s phone or tablet, and then works with the accessibility service of the device to allow someone to navigate the interface in a simpler way. The user might then be able to control the device by blinking, blowing, or through their wheelchair controllers. Some Tecla devices are mounted on a user’s wheelchair and connected to their electronics. Others will have it mounted in their bedside table so they can use it from bed.Tecla’s Integration with VoiceVoice technology has created an opportunity to make things more accessible. With the increased adoption of smart home devices, Tecla saw an opportunity to use the technology to make things more accessible for people with limited mobility.A lot of their users can still use their voices, for example, those with spinal cord injuries. They can use voice assistants to make phone calls and send text messages. They can also use them to control their lights, change their thermostat temperature, etc. They built in the Alexa voice service into their app for use by people who may not have their voice devices with them at any one time. For users who have problems with their voices like speech impairment, Tecla created buttons that users can assign functions to, so they don’t have to use their voices. Users can use the buttons to give commands to their voice assistants.Button FunctionsWhen a user adds their Alexa account into the Tecla app, they create a button and a sound file is generated with a specific message to Alexa. Every time the user activates that button, Tecla sends that sound file to the Alexa voice service so that Alexa can respond. The user doesn’t hear the sound being played to Alexa because it all happens in the back end.Feedback From UsersUsers like Tecla’s simplicity compared to other systems. The Alexa set up is so much easier. Once a user turns their Alexa on and their Wi-Fi recognizes devices in their area and automatically adds them into their account, they just add their Alexa credentials and type the message that they would want to say to Alexa.Recently, a rehab center easily transitioned into using Tecla with the same Alexa devices that they were using.Future Plans for TeclaThey are trying to gain more visibility so they can get more users because their solution is very niche. They work with rehab centers and recently partnered with Bell which is subsidizing the Tecla hardware for those users who would otherwise be unable to use a smartphone or tablet. They are seeking more partnerships that can help them reach more users. They are also looking into providing more services. Right now they have a remote monitoring feature which for example, enables a family to monitor their family member's wheelchair to make sure that the environment around them, like temperature, is safe. Research, the discovery of new knowledge, has been described as an endless frontier. There will certainly be instances during a PhD and beyond when curiosity driven activity can indeed seem vast and relentless. It is critical that researchers at whatever stage in their career develop the capacity and capability to generate an appropriate perspective on what they are facing. Put simply, and starkly, doing research depends on being well. As such, an awareness on health and wellbeing is central, and getting the right support is key. In this podcast Oz Ismail from UCL is joined by Géraldine Garrabet a Student Support and Welfare Officer, from the School of Physics & Astronomy at University of Manchester, Dr Caroline Selai a Senior Lecturer from the UCL Institute of Neurology and finally Kellie Morrissey a Research Fellow working at the Open Lab in Newcastle University.

In podcast #2 from dementiaresearcher.nihr.ac.uk we have a great panel line up, talking about 'Working with people with dementia and their carers'. The people behind the disease are at the centre of what we do as dementia researchers. Biomedical research often involves directly working with patients and carers. This offers a fantastic opportunity and some unique challenges. In this recording Amy Monaghan talks to Timothy Rittman from University of Cambridge and Addenbrookes Hospital, Kellie Morrissey from the Open Lab at Newcastle University and Yvette Vermee from the Department of Psychiatry at University College London. We hear how these three individuals work with people with dementia, how this benefits their work, how to prepare, and how to approach working with individuals challenged by their symptoms.
