POPULARITY
“..We need to reach a point where the people as individuals and as a population are stronger than governing systems, and those governing systems can't be in a position to control; they need to simply govern, build infrastructure, fix roads - not have control and power over people.” That is the call from Lauren Evanthia, the founder of the Organic Humanity Movement (OHM) on the NdB Sunday Show with Chris Steyn as they talk about major developments in the past week: two ward councillors being gunned down in the space of an hour on voter registration weekend; former President Jacob Zuma firing his once powerful daughter, Duduzile, and MKP former spokesperson, her close ally; President Cyril Ramaphosa pondering the Democratic Alliance's (DA's) Cabinet reshuffle requests that sees its former leader, John Steenhuisen, demoted to a deputy minister's post; and Deputy President Paul Mashatile - who is on a working visit in China - seemingly ready to step into presidential shoes while Ramaphosa is doing everything possible to avoid impeachment. They also talk about more corruption being exposed in the South African Police Force (SAPS) with twenty police officers in the Western Cape charged with alleged links to the taxi industry, and Nelson Mandela Bay being ranked the 3rd most violent city in the world.
In the latest edition of the NdB Sunday Show, Chris Steyn talks to Lauren Evanthia, the Founder of the Organic Humanity Movement (OHM), about the “walls closing in” on President Cyril Ramaphosa with a former Public Protector submitting a formal whistleblower's report to FBI and the US Department of Justice on Phala Phala; the anti-Ramaphosa voices on this Impeachment Committee due to meet for the first time tomorrow; former President Jacob Zuma's attack on the President for turning to the courts to try and stop the inquiry; as well as "President-in-waiting" Paul Mashatile's Cape Flats “oversight visit”. They also talk about KZN Provincial Police Commissioner Lt.-Genl. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's response to being named Newsmaker of the Year, and the bomb explosions in Woolworths in two of South Africa's capitals, Bloemfontein and Tshwane. As for the new tax proposed for Vehicle Licence renewals to support the beleaguered Road Accident Fund (RAF), Evanthia says: “So every time there's government failure, the answer is like, let's try tax the people more…There has to be a point where we as South Africans say, no, do your job as a government. We want to see our return on investment, or we're not going to pay up.”
The possible impeachment of President Cyril Ramaphosa seems one step closer with the composition of a “very diverse, multi-party” Impeachment Committee, but the President is fighting back with a court bid to try and stop the inquiry. In this interview with Chris Steyn, Political Commentator Solly Moeng describes how the President is “kicking the ball down the road” and “trying to buy more time” whilst facing “people who want him to be removed because maybe it'll advance their chances towards power through coalitions”, while “others want him to be removed because what he did is wrong”. As for Deputy President Paul Mashatile waiting in the wings: “I fear that if he were to become president, he might not be friendly towards the criminal justice system. The same way that Zuma came into the Presidency running away from the long arm of the law. And people like that coming there, the first thing they do is to ensure that they will weaken any part of the State that might go after them for stuff they did or they are alleged to have done in the past.” As for how the Democratic Alliance (DA) is likely to emerge from the impeachment process, Moeng says: “Now they have an opportunity to show that they still stand for the principle that they've always promoted themselves to be standing for.” He also comments on anti-immigrant protests that have sparked urgent government talks at the Union Buildings to formulate a national plan to deal with the rising xenophobia in South Africa.
The fusion of crime and South African politics remains in the headlines. In her latest interview with Chris Steyn, Action Society's National Spokesperson, Juanita du Preez, comments on Special Leave Police Minister Senzo Mchunu resuming his duties as a member of the African National Congress (ANC) NEC; KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi being reappointed for another five-year term; National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola being summoned to appear before Parliament to explain whether he had been warned about a R360 million tender fraud; the allegedly “Dirty Dozen” cops in the dock in connection with Cat Matlala's tender fraud; and the trial of Deputy President Paul Mashatile's “Blue Light Mafia” members for assaulting members of the public.
The Motor Industry Staff Association, MISA says it agrees with Deputy President Paul Mashatile that workers need support to adapt to Artificial Intelligence. Mashatile is challenging labour federations to develop a Digital Workers' Charter. He warns that AI can improve efficiency but demands new skills and it could reshape jobs. Elvis Presslin spoke to MISA spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola
Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, known as Witness F, testifying at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, says businessman Matlala asked for his bank card, claiming he needed it ahead of meetings with Deputy President Paul Mashatile and General Sibiya. Nkosi admits he mistakenly omitted this detail in his earlier statements before the commission, calling it human error. Under questioning by Advocate Chaskalson, Nkosi denies protecting Mashatile and maintains his version of events before the commission today hearing.
Thabo Shole Mashao chats to Thabiso Goba, EWN Reporter on the latest regarding the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. Sergeant Fannie Nkosi said before the commission that "human error" caused him to omit the connection between Matlala and Mashatile from his contributions. 702 Drive with John Perlman is a Johannesburg based talk radio show.
Deputy President Paul Mashatile is a flawed individual who should probably not be president, journalist and author Pieter Du Toit tells Peter Bruce in this edition of Podcasts from the Edge. Du Toit in his new book on Mashatile, The Dark Prince, lays out the complex web of personal and financial relationships that keep Cyril Ramaphosa's probable successor that are now “so intertwined that his life seems to be funded by individuals directly dependent government contracts”. “You remember that in 2009 (when corruption charges against Jacob Zuma were withdrawn there were large parts of the commentariat back then and in, in, in general, in the country saying, you know, ' Let's just give this guy a chance. He connects with people at grassroots level' ", says Du Toit. "And I think if we decide to say, let's just give Paul Mashatile a chance we'd make a grave mistake. He lacks a political compass. He is someone who who is open to influences outside of what can be considered proper. He's a deeply problematic character”. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. President Cyril Ramaphosa is “a prisoner of his own party secrets”. So says former double agent and Mandela spy, Brad Steyn, who was Neil de Beer's brother-in-arms. Steyn - who is now an independent security expert - gives the backstory to Ramaphosa's rise and reveals the role played by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu - now on special leave. Hailing the bravery of SAPS whistleblower General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, Steyn describes how other police generals were burnt when they spoke truth to power. He expresses concern that incoming Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia is “just another cadre deployment”. Commenting on deepening factions in the African National Congress (ANC) as top members jockey to be the party's next leader, Steyn labels Deputy President Paul Mashatile an “absolutle nightmare” - and says: “what we are witnessing isn't democracy, it's survival and contest for the corrupt elites… and every move is shadowed by dirty money, spy games, and fears of prosecution”. As for the raging diplomatic war between the US and SA, he says: “South Africa is punching way above their diplomatic weight and way below our ethical belt… we've weaponised transformation into a tender cartel and now the world's pulling back the curtain - and you can't blame them.” He fingers BRICS as a “big, big obstacle” and says it is “not a moral alliance”, but “an opportunistic economic bloc…built on double standards and dirty deals, back ends…bribes.”

Trade and Industry Minister Parks Tau was “surprised” by the links of Deputy President Paul Mashatile to the new Lotto licensee appointed by him at the end of May. So says Toby Chance, the Democratic Alliance (DA) spokesperson on Trade, Industry and Competition, after the Minister was questioned today. “Minister Tau didn't appear to be aware of it, which raises serious questions of due diligence in the Lottery adjudication process.” Chance says there are lots of unanswered questions “and unfortunately, it's a classic case - yet again - of how State Capture and corruption works. It's a dubious connection between politicians, business people and public officials. which has led to the downfall of so many of our institutions.” Chance adds that the corruption charges laid against the Deputy President by the DA over a year ago are still pending. “And so I think that what Mr. Tau is able to uncover, if he does go ahead with this investigation into Sizekhaya's shareholding, could be the beginning of a slippery slope for the Deputy President.”

South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile, in an interview with FRANCE 24's Georja Calvin-Smith, denied President Donald Trump's claims of a “white genocide” in South Africa.
