True biosecurity is about more than just fences; it is about farmer-led resilience. Dr Stefan Steyn joins us to discuss the vital role of the Red Meat Producers' Organisation (RPO) in connecting rural communities with the state, ensuring that producers' interests remain a priority in national policy.Steyn has spent the last 16 years refining his expertise in the veterinary field. As a technical manager for Afrivet Training Services, his work centres on the intricate relationship between viruses and the immune systems of poultry and livestock. In this episode, he highlights why the responsibility for animal health must begin with the individual farmer, and how the Red Meat Producers' Organisation (RPO) acts as a critical facilitator in shifting the narrative toward farmer-led resilience.Steyn explores the concept of fence-line biosecurity, advocating for a shift toward community-led defence. By adopting a neighbourhood watch model, communal and emerging farmers can form clusters to monitor animal movements and protect shared grazing areas, moving the focus from reactive treatments to sustainable, collective prevention.
Gauteng Hawks coordinator of narcotics cases, Colonel Francois Steyn has told the Madlanga Commission that officers Mashaba and Manganye allegedly opened a container at Scania where about 20 bags of suspected narcotics fell out and were loaded into an unmarked Nissan bakkie. He admitted he did not directly witness the incident and relied on accounts from officers on scene. Photographic evidence was later retrieved from colleagues after his phone was damaged.
Is Hy net jou Verlosser? Of is Hy jou Here?
South Africa's crime crisis is under the spotlight as insiders expose rising kidnappings, failing leadership, and police misconduct. From shocking stories of VIP protection abuse to real risks facing ordinary citizens, this conversation pulls no punches. Hear how corruption, weak accountability, and poor systems are fueling insecurity - and what can actually be done to fix it. With firsthand experience and bold opinions, this is a gripping look at a country battling to restore trust, safety, and justice.
Drawing on decades in policing and private security, Rory Steyn delivers a sobering assessment of South Africa's crime crisis - warning that a hollowed-out, politicised police service is failing those on the front lines. From broken crime intelligence to bloated leadership and under-equipped officers, he argues the system is no longer fit for purpose.

Security expert Rory Steyn reacts to Australia's groundbreaking move to ban under-16s from social media, explains why tech firms must be held responsible, and argues that protecting teenagers now is as essential as seatbelts once were for road safety.
“An armed struggle is not something that we would embark on - ever.” That was the assurance given by AfriForum's Kallie Kriel when Chris Steyn asked him to comment on a screenshot of a post making the rounds on Social Media with claims from an unnamed intelligence officer that AfriForum and some other civic rights organisations were procuring high-calibre arms from abroad to overthrow the State and take back power. He also tells Steyn why he defines himself as a patriot - and not as a traitor. Kriel shares details of his request for support to the G20 countries, and the solutions he presented to them. He further divulges details of affidavits submitted to the Khampepe Commission to show that there was not only political interference to ensure that members of the Apartheid Security Forces weren't prosecuted after the TRC, but that there was also political interference to stop African National Congress (ANC) members from being prosecuted. Commenting on the Madlanga Commission enquiry into police and political capture, Kriel says: “…we cannot fix the police. But what we can do is, within the framework of the law, we can organise our communities within neighbourhood watches to try and play that role. And in every sphere where government fails, we try and build a civil society solution.”
On this edition of the NdB Sunday Show Rory Steyn, the former Chief of Security for the late President Nelson Mandela, calls for special legislation that denies any police officer a political affiliation. Steyn is speaking in the wake of another week of increasingly jaw-dropping evidence heard at the Madlanga Commission and Parliament's Ad Hoc Committee. Steyn outlines why the political ambitions of former Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and suspended Deputy Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya have been dashed. “I'm not sure I have the words to express the revulsion that I feel towards the leadership of the police, certain of…we need more Mkhwanazis”. He hails “brave witnesses, A, B, and C, investigating this, who are strong and courageous enough and have sufficient integrity to say, not on our watch”. He also gives his take on the Nine Lives of “Cat” Matlala and other players in the triad of cartel bosses, crooked cops, and captured politicians. Meanwhile, Steyn calls for NPA resources to be bolstered to ensure consequences for those implicated. “Put it in the hands of the private sector. There's enough legal expertise out there. Put it in the hands, even possibly of private investigators…”

In the latest Sunday Show, Chris Steyn talks to Security Expert Brad Steyn about another tumultuous week in South African politics: He slams the “dangerous deflection” used by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his handling of the US export tariff crisis and a Presidency “more concerned with BRICS handshakes than backbone diplomacy”. Steyn also warns of dirty tricks to undermine the whistleblowing KZN General “Lucky” Mkhwanazi. “There is a rogue SAPS investigation underway, meaning the cover-up is beginning. The goal is to undermine reformers like Mkhwanazi before their testimony even sees daylight. This is incredibly concerning because the same tactics used in SAPS purges, intelligence shutdowns and factional suppressions happened under the Zuma administration. So it comes straight out of this ANC playbook.” As for the opulent lifestyle of Deputy President Paul Mashatile, Steyn says: “… insiders… now fear that his 2027 presidential bid is toxic and triggering a full potential ANC leadership collapse”. Steyn further warns of “foreign capture” saying: “…we're not just dealing with ANC incompetence, we're dealing with foreign intelligence infiltration. Right here… Iranian agents, Russian operatives and other foreign intelligence entities are being allowed to operate freely under the blind eye…”

This is an episode packed with odd resonances, echoes, large whiskers, many presidents and the origin of a modern bank. Now that the diamond fields were being exploited, this being1870, a plethora of politicians lined up to claim ownership — the ever-ambitious and unrealistic President Pretorius of the Transvaal among these, who as you heard last episode, had been chased away by the diggers. These were an international lot, not prone to being intimidated by old bearded men from the Transvaal. His attempt at unilaterally granting drights to the diamond fields to messers Webb, Posno and Munnich had gone done like a lead balloon. As you heard, too, Nicholas Waterboer also claimed these fields, so too the Free State government under President Steyn. Waterboer was persuaded by his Cape educated lawyer the vigorous pen-and-ink warfare expert David Arnot, to ask the British Government to honour his claim on behalf of the Griqua. Waterboer didn't need much convincing. Author and Journalist Frederick Boyle who wrote “To the Cape For Diamonds” published in 1873 respected Arnot, meeting him in 1871 and describing him as very short, very thick, with a large face clean shaven and a dark skin burnt darker by South African suns. “Mr David Arnot is one of those gentlemen who, in a larger or smaller sphere, make history…” He'd conducted Waterboer's business for 17 years, and as Boyle said, had made “..not one mistake..” Which is a miracle considering the forces at work in the transOrangia. A diplomats diplomat they said. Tenacious, unfailing, undaunted. He was President Pretorius and President Brands nemesis in some ways, a highly educated coloured man who was connected to the levers of power. He was also relatively wealthy, working as an attorney in Colesberg earning 2000 pounds a year. A man of his time, like other educated men and women of the Victorian era, he collected plants and wrote letters to famous scientists in his spare time. Devout imperialist and friend, Richard Southey agreed. But the incoming high Commissioner, Sir Henry Barkly, needed to be pursuaded. He'd just arrived, sporting enormous black whiskers, a large commanding figure, an authoritarian, gruff, former member of the English parliament, he didn't want to be dragged into some territorial dispute so early in his governorship. He'd replaced Sir Philip Wodehouse as High Commissioner — Wodehouse congratulated himself when he left in May 1870 claiming not a shot had been fired by a British soldier during his stint — which was a stunning turnaround from the preceding 70 years, particularly the turbulent 1840s. In the interregnum between the discovery of diamonds and annexation of the diamondiferous land by Great Britain, a short-lived but highly entertaining Free Diamond Republic sprang into being. Self-appointed, proudly chaotic, and run by the diggers for the diggers. The Diggers Republic had all the trappings — including a flag which a ccording to historical accounts, featured the Union Jack in the top corner, similar to other colonial flags of the era. And its President? Stafford Parker was his name, and he was to rule over the territory for the grand total of twelve months. One reporter from London said that he “behaved modestly and does honour to his position … the order of the day — is solid civility —- listen to, but say nothing, and dig away….” Golden rule amongst treasure hunters. Stay shtum as you grind away. President Stafford Parker—ever the showman with a wink and a waistcoat—launched his corrugated iron canteen at Klipdrift on the banks of the Vaal with all the flair of a Mar-a-Lago meets muddy boots affair. Not content with presiding over a ragtag republic of diggers and dreamers, Parker decided he'd double as chief entertainer and purveyor of refreshments, slinging drinks and good cheer beneath a roof of rippling iron. Why not? If you're going to rule, you might as well pour the pints too.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is “a prisoner of his own party secrets”. So says former double agent and Mandela spy, Brad Steyn, who was Neil de Beer's brother-in-arms. Steyn - who is now an independent security expert - gives the backstory to Ramaphosa's rise and reveals the role played by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu - now on special leave. Hailing the bravery of SAPS whistleblower General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, Steyn describes how other police generals were burnt when they spoke truth to power. He expresses concern that incoming Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia is “just another cadre deployment”. Commenting on deepening factions in the African National Congress (ANC) as top members jockey to be the party's next leader, Steyn labels Deputy President Paul Mashatile an “absolutle nightmare” - and says: “what we are witnessing isn't democracy, it's survival and contest for the corrupt elites… and every move is shadowed by dirty money, spy games, and fears of prosecution”. As for the raging diplomatic war between the US and SA, he says: “South Africa is punching way above their diplomatic weight and way below our ethical belt… we've weaponised transformation into a tender cartel and now the world's pulling back the curtain - and you can't blame them.” He fingers BRICS as a “big, big obstacle” and says it is “not a moral alliance”, but “an opportunistic economic bloc…built on double standards and dirty deals, back ends…bribes.”
Show Notes: Lawrence Steyn moved to Los Angeles to work with Walt Disney, where he helped think through financing new theme parks and movies. After leaving Disney, he went into traditional investment banking. He also mentions that he was a character in a theme park training program, where he was a penguin in full costume. His experience in LA and his role as a character in the training program were both memorable and challenging, and being a penguin was the hardest job he had in the 30+ years since graduating. From Investment Banking to the Tech Industry Lawrence moved to New York and worked at Goldman, including spending several years in London. He worked at Morgan Stanley and also as vice chairman at JP Morgan. After COVID-19, he faced a midlife crisis and decided to work at an autonomous vehicle company called Pony.ai. The company was Chinese-centric and had a large nexus with China. This was around 2020/21 during a time when relations between the U.S. and China were strained. The company faced financial and geopolitical challenges from China, who wanted to assert control over its tech sector, and restrictions from the US. Lawrence talks about an event that took place in the U.S. that allowed a government body to exert their control and limit the company. However, Lawrence started lobbying for Pony's cause, visiting Capitol Hill and California representatives, however it became clear that Pony was never going to go public as an American-centric company. Joining a Manufacturing-centric P.E. Firm As his time at Pony was coming to an end, a private equity firm, American Industrial Partners, approached Lawrence to join them. Lawrence discusses the changing business world, government issues, and supply chain changes post-COVID. As an American manufacturing-centric private equity firm, he observes the shrinking of supply chains and the refocus on American hard enterprise, but he compares this with his experience at Pony, as a $6-7 billion company started by seven guys in a garage, compared to the cost of manufacturing enterprises. Lawrence enjoys his work and the opportunity to create billions of dollars of value through low capital and high-IQ work. Lawrence also shares his experience with venture capital tech. A Superpower and Brokering a Big Deal Lawrence believes that his superpower is listening to people's words and being thoughtful, especially when dealing with potential clients. He emphasizes being creative and challenging himself to think of unexpected twists in situations. He shares an example from his time at Morgan Stanley, and the most successful deal of his career. He was the sole advisor to United Technologies, which was the biggest industrial deal up to that date. The unique idea was that United Technologies wanted to buy Rockwell Collins. Lawrence talks about the idea he put forward that allowed United Technologies to keep the Rockwell Collins name and maintain its rich heritage, while United Technologies owned about 60% of the company. The deal was a complex and unique one, with high effort and structuring involved. Global Trade Wars and Tariffs The conversation revolves around the ongoing global trade wars, particularly the tariffs. Lawrence states that while the uncertainty has slowed everything down, however, the outcome has not been terrible. The market has returned to close to all-time highs. Lawrence mentions that the long-term impact of these tariffs is questionable, as the reduction in the dollar's role as a global reserve currency is problematic. He also discusses the importance of having a strong US global leadership role and the need for a good manufacturing base. He mentions that the lack of access to various materials has proven problematic, and that the US should focus on American manufacturing capabilities. However, he also mentions that American Industrial Partners have been investing in American manufacturing capabilities for decades, and their history and majority of businesses are America-centric. A Global Trade Slow Down The Trump administration's focus on tariffs has slowed down global trade, with the US and Mexico experiencing increased tensions. The US has been focusing on geopolitical issues, such as China and Mexico, but the long-term impact of these tariffs is uncertain. The US has been investing in American manufacturing capabilities for decades, and many businesses have found that having an American manufacturing base is more valuable to people around the world. The uncertainty surrounding the introduction of tariffs has led to negotiations and investment being put on hold, as the US has good manufacturing capabilities in Mexico. The short-term impacts of these tariffs have been less dramatic, and the long-term impacts are more theoretical at this point. However, the US has managed to maintain its manufacturing base and maintain its global leadership role. Barriers to Growth in Manufacturing The conversation turns to barriers to the growth of the manufacturing industry in America, including electricity, skilled labor, zoning, local supply chain, permits, and environmental reviews etc. Lawrence highlights the importance of re-electrifying America, which is a complex process that takes time and requires skilled and unskilled labor. The supply chain, as seen with Apple's desire to manufacture in the US. The biggest challenge for manufacturers is the uncertainty of tariffs and their impact on the US manufacturing industry. If there were a sustainable and constructive policy in place for decades, manufacturers would be more comfortable investing in advanced manufacturing capabilities. However, the whimsy of these policies can be problematic, as they may be reversed or ended by lawsuits, hinders planning and investment. An Effective Pro-US Manufacturing Policy A more effective pro-US manufacturing policy with bipartisan support could be beneficial. Some goals that could be valuable include bringing manufacturing back to the US for data centers, shipbuilding, and auto manufacturing. However, the broad concept of remanufacturing in the US doesn't necessarily mean achieving everything at once. A thoughtful policy with bipartisan support could be powerful, but a more consistent, specific, targeted policy with broad support could be more effective. Influential Harvard Courses and Professors Lawrence mentions a Michael Sandel's core class, Justice, that focuses on different theories of justice, which he believes are important for thinking thoughtfully about political and global events. He also enjoyed a seminar with Marjorie Garber on Shakespeare, which he took as a core class and then revisited as an alumni for a deep dive. He also mentions activities centered around the International Relations Council, Model UN, and American Industrial Partners. Just as the Democratic Alliance (DA) was making good gains in the long-turbulent township of Kayamandi, Stellenbosch, its Mayco member for Community Services and PR Councillor Xolile Kalipa was gunned down. In this interview with BizNews, Koos Steyn, the DA's West Region Chairperson, says although he does not wish to speculate, from what people had said, “it really looked like it was some kind of a hit”. The killing has unleashed an atmosphere of fear amongst other DA councillors who “…at this stage...are really not actively staying in Kayamandi because they're scared to…” Steyn hailed the slain Kalipa as somebody who “was fighting for the DA in many, many ways…we were really starting to move in gaining support in Kayamandi as the Democratic Alliance. And it's really the work of people like Kalipa.” Steyn adds: "...the only way you can really stop it when something like this happens is to get to the truth of it. Why it happened, who is behind it, and get those people out of the streets”.
Climate scientist Dr. Michael Mann won a defamation lawsuit against two conservative writers last week. The verdict was 12 years in the making. In 2012 writers Rand Simberg and Mark Steyn accused Mann of manipulating his data related to his famous 1998 “hockey stick” graph, which depicts rising global temperatures after the industrial revolution. Simberg compared him to former Penn State football coach and convicted child sex abuser Jerry Sandusky in a blog post for a libertarian think tank. Steyn later referenced Simberg's article in a National Review piece, calling Mann's work “fraudulent.”Reviews by Penn State (Mann's home institution at the time) and the National Science Foundation, found no scientific wrongdoing. And in fact the iconic graph has since been supported by numerous studies. What does this ruling signal about the public's understanding of climate change research? And the limitations of free speech?Ira talks with Dr. Michael Mann, professor of Earth & environmental science at the University of Pennsylvania and author of Our Fragile Moment: How Lessons from Earth's Past Can Help Us Survive the Climate Crisis.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Welcome back to the Ann and Phelim Scoop! We bring you today's episode all the way from Washington, DC, where the free speech trial of the century is taking place. You might remember that broadcaster Mark Steyn is in the middle of a twelve-year legal battle because he called out Michael Mann's shoddy science in the hockey stick graph, which reveals the spike in global temperatures following the Industrial Revolution after having remained stable for a thousand years. Funny enough, there's no consideration of the Medieval Warming period or the Little Ice Age, but Steyn targeted one of the Left's favorite orthodoxies, so of course, he's being dragged through the courts. The trial between Professor Michael Mann and broadcaster Mark Steyn will determine whether climate alarmism or free speech is going to be the rule of the land. So we'll be covering it through our new verbatim podcast - Climate Change: On Trial. We will have re-enactments of the day's most dramatic testimony and you can get a taste of day one of the trial on the Scoop today. This is an episode you won't want to miss. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ap-scoop/message
