Just as the Democratic Alliance (DA) was making good gains in the long-turbulent township of Kayamandi, Stellenbosch, its Mayco member for Community Services and PR Councillor Xolile Kalipa was gunned down. In this interview with BizNews, Koos Steyn, the DA's West Region Chairperson, says although he does not wish to speculate, from what people had said, “it really looked like it was some kind of a hit”. The killing has unleashed an atmosphere of fear amongst other DA councillors who “…at this stage...are really not actively staying in Kayamandi because they're scared to…” Steyn hailed the slain Kalipa as somebody who “was fighting for the DA in many, many ways…we were really starting to move in gaining support in Kayamandi as the Democratic Alliance. And it's really the work of people like Kalipa.” Steyn adds: "...the only way you can really stop it when something like this happens is to get to the truth of it. Why it happened, who is behind it, and get those people out of the streets”.

Tenille Hoogland's mission is to transform how female athletes experience sports and reach lifelong health and athletic excellence.  Her athletic journey began as an Olympic hopeful in synchronized swimming. In her late 20s, she became a professional triathlete. On the surface, her athletic career looks stellar. She represented Canada at International Triathlon Union (ITU) Pan-American Championships, long course events and at IRONMAN World Championships several times, winning numerous titles along the way. However, the method to achieve success had a tremendous cost.  She trained relentlessly, unknowingly developed disordered eating and lost her period for 5 years. This led to several injuries and significant hormone challenges. Mentally, she lost joy in sport and retired from triathlon in 2013. Her struggle to find health and her athletic self spanned several years; first, she overcame 2 years of fertility challenges, learnt how to move again without pain and then to move consistently with joy. It came through deep curiosity, education, and trial and error.This journey led her to create the Mindset, Nutrition, Training, and Recovery Integrated Training System (MNTR-ITS), which she uses alongside her coaching practice. This accessible, step-by-step, evidence-based system empowers female athletes to establish a foundation of health for excellence, performance, and resilience. It works through the physiological life stages of the female athlete, from pre- to post-menopause. Professionally, Tenille was a Senior Planner at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Federal Secretariat, managed numerous IRONMAN events, held a Management position at Triathlon Canada and was recognized by her national federation and Canadian Olympic Committee as a Future Sports Leader. Now, through her company, Tenille Hoogland Applied Athletics, Tenille coaches female athletes in perimenopause and beyond. She owns the Element Race Team, an amateur women's cycling team whose mission is to get more women on the start lines at cycling events. Climate scientist Dr. Michael Mann won a defamation lawsuit against two conservative writers last week.The verdict was 12 years in the making. In 2012 writers Rand Simberg and Mark Steyn accused Mann of manipulating his data related to his famous 1998 “hockey stick” graph, which depicts rising global temperatures after the industrial revolution. Simberg compared him to former Penn State football coach and convicted child sex abuser Jerry Sandusky in a blog post for a libertarian think tank. Steyn later referenced Simberg's article in a National Review piece, calling Mann's work “fraudulent.”Reviews by Penn State (Mann's home institution at the time) and the National Science Foundation, found no scientific wrongdoing. And in fact the iconic graph has since been supported by numerous studies.What does this ruling signal about the public's understanding of climate change research? Finally, the day Mark Steyn has been waiting for, for 12 years has arrived. Professor Michael Mann continues to give evidence in his defamation case against writer Mark Steyn and scientist Rand Simberg. The soft questions from Mann's lawyer ended today. Listen as he comes under relentless, but rather charming questioning from Rand Simberg‘s defense. Mann is adamant that Simberg and Steyn's statements were false. He says there was no fraud or misconduct in the creation of his Hockey Stick graph, and he refuted allegations that Penn State covered up his alleged scientific malfeasance. Among the indignities were mean looks from people in supermarkets  However, Simberg's lawyer used Mann's own career evaluations to show his career and income had improved since the articles were published. Then we follow him to film festivals and book tours in between partying with Bill Clinton and Leonardo DiCaprio.
