Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Ty Herndon over Zoom video! GRAMMY® nominated and Dove Award winning recording artist Ty Herndon released his new single, Orphans of God, a duet with Emmy and Tony award winning actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth, featuring award winning pianist and composer Paul Cardall on piano.  The single will be featured on Herndon’s upcoming Christmas album, Regifted, set for release on Friday, November 27. via BFD/The Orchard.“I’ve been wanting to record Orphans of God for quite some time, and I’m so honored and humbled that it came together with my friends Kristin Chenoweth and Paul Cardall during this very difficult time in the life of our nation. It’s more important now than it has ever been before to remember that we are all created equally and that God loves us all just the same. I hope this song can be a beacon of hope to anyone who’s feeling lost, overwhelmed, or suffering in any way,” said Herndon.“To sing with Ty Herndon was a dream. But to sing a song with lyrics that we both believe was so special. I hope as you listen to the song you hear the words and they speak to your heart,” said Chenoweth.“Ever since receiving a donor heart, it’s been my life’s work to use music to help heal the hearts of others, which is why I’m excited to join with my friends Ty Herndon and Kristin Chenoweth in echoing an important message through this song — a truth that there are no orphans of God. Everyone is welcome to my table and as a Christian, I believe to suggest otherwise undervalues God’s sacrifice,” said Cardall.Orphans of God was written by Joel Lindsey and Twila LaBar and originally recorded by contemporary Christian group Avalon. Former Avalon band members Melissa Greene and Michael Passons provide backing vocals on the updated track.“When we were writing Orphans of God, we talked about the fact that many experience the painful sting of rejection and feel as if they don’t belong,” said LaBar.“To say that there are no orphans of God is our way pf saying that everyone is loved, seen, and remembered,” said Lindsey.Orphans of God will lead the track list for Herndon’s upcoming Christmas Album, entitled Regifted. In addition to the new single, the album features a curated selection of Herndon’s favorite tracks from his holiday catalogue.“It’s been a tough year for so many of us, and I wanted to give my fans a little something special to cheer up this season,” said Herndon, who is currently in the studio preparing an album of all new material for a 2021 release, his first since 2016’s House On Fire.We want to hear from you! Have you ever changed a strongly held value or belief system? Or, have you ever changed your mind on something you’ve always believed to be true? For today’s guest, Melissa Greene, she has done that many times over. And Melissa credits her constant growth and evolution to her willingness to be curious and gain a deeper understanding about the world around her. But, Melissa wasn’t always this way. She grew up in a conservative, evangelical household in Florida. She believed that her upbringing as a Southern Baptist was the “right” way of doing life and believing in God. But as she gained exposure to other thinking and ideas, her worldview and beliefs changed too.  Melissa started her career as a Christian music artist and for seven years, she sang as part of the contemporary Christian music group, Avalon. She then went on to pastor a church in Nashville that was widely publicized for its decision to become an LGBTQ-affirming congregation. And now she leads Imaginarium, a non-religious space that makes room for all of humanity and spiritual journeys.   My conversation with Melissa took place four weeks ago. It was in the wake of the news about Ahmad Arbery and Breonna Taylor. We couldn’t have known when we recorded this that George Floyd’s horrific murder would follow a couple of weeks later.  During our conversation, we spent a good deal of time talking about racial injustice and finding the courage to speak up, which is more important than ever. If you’re someone who is struggling to understand or is looking for ways to help, I really hope you’ll take the time to listen. Melissa offers some great perspective and wisdom that I think you’ll find valuable. I could have easily talked to Melissa for hours. Melissa Greene is a musician, most notably a member of the Christian group, Avalon, from the years 2002-2009, bringing us lots of hit songs. She served as a pastor at Grace Pointe in Tennessee, which is known for its progressive positions, including being LGBTQ affirming. And just recently, she has left that position and are now the founder, alongside Anna Skates, of the intentional community Imaginarium. Melissa is married and the mother of two children.   Melissa feels like my sister from another mother. We share a very similar faith trajectory, from a conservative evangelical background to becoming a seeker of an expansive spirituality and community. In this episode, she shares her faith shift story, including how to interact with our past selves and how faith shifting impacts her parenting. We talk about what values to teach our children after dramatic changes in our own beliefs, alternative rituals to do with kids (she shares a "River Prayer" that her children loves and is just beautiful!), and the song she sings over her daughter at bedtime. I invited her on the show because I want to encourage those of us who are figuring out new ways to PARENT FORWARD how to find or create new communities that are life-giving. I ask her about how IMAGINARIUM began, what the role of children is in IMAGINARIUM, and we leave with some recommendations for others who may want to start similar projects in YOUR communities. Enneagram Eights (The Challengers) are hard driving, tough, decisive, innovative, and resourceful people who make things happen. They're larger than life presence and boundless energy instills confidence in others, and people follow them. As long as they're a man, that is. Our culture reveres male Eights. People admire men who “kick ass and take names.” Sadly, we all know the word folks use to describe a woman who takes charge, stands up for what she believes, refuses to take crap from people and gets the job done. I don't need to spell it out for you, right? All to say, emale Eights are arguably the most misunderstood and unfairly treated number on the Enneagram. On today's episode of Typology, I talk with pastor, activist, musical artist, and Enneagram Eight, Melissa Greene. Affectionately called the ‘The Velvet Hammer' by her friends and fans, Melissa is true to her type.
