On the show today: Was the public pressure too much for the coalition government to take? It appears so, as they've dished out $604M to funding cancer drugs. Cancer drug campaigner and legend Malcolm Mulholland joins us, as well as cancer patient Akhil Chaudary to discuss what this means for them and others who have been through cancer themselves or with loved ones. Sex...when's it too early to discuss it with your kids? Dr Melissa Kang's book 'Welcome To Sex' was pulled from Aussie bookstore shelves for being too graphic. Essentially a 'how to' when it comes to the bedroom. Do the police have any idea of where Tom Phillips is? Clearly not...the $80k reward finishes at midnight tonight, and in all honesty, I think they've might a right royal meal of this whole case... See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New research released today from Women's Health Victoria is showing a sad state of affairs for how people see their genitalia in 2024. The research, which includes a nationally representative YouGov survey of more than 1000 Australians with a labia, found that porn and the 'online world' are having a significant impact on young people's anxiety and shame around their vulva and labia. In this episode, we speak with the longest serving Dolly Doctor and Labia Library ambassador, Dr Melissa Kang. Melissa Kang was ‘Dolly Doctor', giving advice to Aussie teens about boobs and sex. She's wise and warm, and a kick-ass ping pong player, too.
Talking to kids about sex and sexuality is often a highly controversial and sensitive topic, but comprehensive sexual education really shouldn't be. As information - and often the wrong information - becomes more accessible to children and teenagers who are online, how can parents and teachers ensure that young people understand what sexual health is? What kind of questions do they usually have? We find out more from Dr Melissa Kang, she's an associate professor in the specialty of general practice at the University of Sydney with a special interest in adolescent and young adult health and sexual health. She's also co-authored several books targeted at young people to help them understand their bodies and their sexual health.Image Credit: Mumlyfe

In this episode of The Briefing, we're joined by co-author Yumi Stynes who explains why she wrote the book and what she hoped it would achieve....and Yumi certainly didn't expect it to create this level of controversy. The Australian curriculum is continuously contested and countless interest groups want to add new things in. So it's a big win for the ‘Teach Us Consent' campaign to have consent education added to the curriculum from 2023. In this episode, we speak to the founder of the campaign, Chanel Contos, who collected thousands of signatures and testimonials from school students who had experienced sexual harrassment or assault while at school. How has consent been taught at school and why is it so important to teach consent earlier and in a more comprehensive way. And what are students and young people calling for? We'll hear from university students who keenly remember their sex education classes, and former Dolly Doctor, Dr Melissa Kang, who has recently co-authored a book for children and parents called ‘Welcome to Consent'. *Trigger warning: This episode talks about sexual assault and sexual violence and may not be suitable for younger listeners. Young people have the right to access health services independently; as early as they are able to access them. As health care professionals, there are a number of medico-legal and ethical considerations that may play out in any health care consultation with teens.Firstly, we have a duty of care to assess their competence and maturity as it pertains to decision making around the treatment goal proposed. We can assist them on their help seeking journey by creating opportunities to develop health literacy and to participate in making decisions appropriate to their age and developmental stage. Judgement must also be made about whether the teen can manage the health care journey independently or when parent support is required. Finally, in the case where family based care is recommended but the clinician faces resistance from the teen, how does the clinician balance these considerations so as to maintain trust in the therapeutic relationship and appropriate care for the teen?In this episode, we'll be talking a deeper dive into the medico legal frameworks and ethical principles that we operate within when we provide care primary care services to young people independently seeking support. I'll be speaking with expert colleagues in the field of adolescent healthcare, regular contributors paediatrician Prof Susan Sawyer and child and adolescent psychiatrist, A/Prof Sandra Radovini. We'll be discussing young peoples needs, their rights, and their responsibilities when it comes to participating in patient centred care. We'll be discussing the skills and capacities that are required and how we, as GPs and nurses, can assist young people to build these skills and support them on their journey either independently or alongside families.Including a discussion on:-the mature minor assessment in Australia-confidentiality-patient centred and transitional models of adolescent health care-the young person's rights and responsibilities in healthcare-working with and alongside families in practice-best practice approaches to working with young people either independently or with familiesFor more information, we recommend this practical guide for GPs and nurses:Adolescent Health GP Resource Kit, 2nd editionBy Peter Chown, Dr Melissa Kang, Dr Lena Sanci, Verity Newnham and Clin Prof David Bennett AOy https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/kidsfamilies/youth/Documents/gp-resources-kit/gp-resource-kit-sect2-chap6.pdfThis Podcast was recorded "at home" in November, 2020Presented by: Dr Bianca Forrester, Department of General Practice, University of MelbourneGuests: Prof Susan Sawyer- Centre of Adolescent Health, Royal Children's Hospital, Department of PaediatricsA/Prof Sandra Radovini - Director, Mindful-Centre For Training & Research, Department of PsychiatryProduced by: Bianca ForresterMusic: Space Cadet LullabiesGraphics: Gaal CreativeThe Maze Phase is a production of the University of Melbourne, Australia. What do tickling, swimming lessons, haircuts, and medical treatments have to do with consent? Well, more than milkshakes, apparently. When she started writing her latest book, Welcome to Consent, Yumi Stynes had no idea that she’d be releasing it the midst of a national conversation about sexual assault. But, she says, this conversation has "always been urgent". It’s just that now, finally, we’re actually talking about it. For the Millenials listening, you’ll remember Yumi as the host of Channel V, starting back in 2000. She’s since forged an incredible and varied career as a TV and radio host, podcaster, and cookbook author. And you’ll probably know her co-author, Dr Melissa Kang, by her very famous pseudonym: Dolly Doctor. The two have paired up to write this incredible guide for children and their parents, about how to talk about consent. As adults, we have a hard enough time saying no - so how can expect our kids to do it? And does a culture of ‘niceness’ make it even harder for them to advocate for themselves? In this episode we ask Yumi all of this and more. She tells us why her family have a safe word, why people pleasing is dangerous, and why it’s so important to get in there with the conversations before the puberty hormones kick in. And given she has her own podcast titled ‘Ladies, We Need to Talk’, we’re doing just that. Let’s talk... See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
