Alexina shares her powerful philosophy that “the mess is in our message.” Rather than running from life's messes, she invites us to run toward them—not to toxically positivity ourselves out of discomfort, but to treat our mess as an act of service, a fertile ground for growth, and a space for authentic connection. Together, they explore: Why embracing your mess is one of the most courageous acts of leadership; How Alexina's Compass framework can guide you back to center when life feels chaotic; The power of perspective to shift how we see ourselves and others; and Why co-creation and collaboration can transform not just our work, but our lives. Meet Laur Elle — a rising indie-pop voice blending airy vocals, vivid storytelling, and lush soundscapes that invite listeners into a world of pure escapism.Born in Oklahoma and raised in Alberta, Canada, Laur Elle grew up balancing two worlds: the discipline of sport and the magic of words. As the daughter of a hockey coach and a former internationally competitive gymnast for Team Canada, she carried the focus of an athlete into her artistry. But it was poetry — and eventually music — where she unlocked her true voice. What began with poems turned into songs, what started as open mics became a passion, and soon Laur Elle found herself in studios co-writing and shaping a sound that bridges the intimacy of a singer-songwriter with the bold energy of pop. Drawing inspiration from storytellers like Taylor Swift, the playful edge of The 1975, and the raw honesty of artists like Halsey and Dominic Fike, she's carved out a sound that feels both nostalgic and new — dreamy yet grounded, escapist yet real. For Laur Elle, music is more than melody — it's medicine. The conversation focuses on mental health, vulnerability in leadership, and the importance of community support. Key Insights: Mental Health Awareness: Golden discusses his struggles with mental health, particularly during a significant crash after a year and a half of service. He emphasizes the importance of seeking help and the positive impact of counseling and medication. Vulnerability in Leadership: By sharing his personal challenges with his ward, Golden fostered a culture of openness, encouraging others to share their struggles and creating a supportive environment. The Sariah Factor: Golden introduces the concept of the Sariah Factor, highlighting the need for leaders to trust their perspective and discernment, even when others may not understand the decisions being made. Delegation and Empowerment: He shares how he empowered his ward leaders, such as the Relief Society and Elders Quorum presidents, to take on responsibilities, which helped alleviate his workload and fostered a sense of ownership among leaders. Community Support: Golden underscores the importance of community, noting that members often overlook the challenges faced by their leaders. Simple expressions of gratitude can significantly uplift those in leadership roles. Leadership Applications: Encourage Open Communication: Leaders should create an environment where members feel comfortable sharing their struggles, which can strengthen community bonds and support. Prioritize Mental Health: Leaders should recognize the importance of mental health and seek help when needed, setting an example for others to do the same. Empower Others: By delegating responsibilities and trusting ward leaders, bishops can manage their workload more effectively while fostering leadership skills in others, ultimately benefiting the entire ward. 05:32 - Calling as Bishop During COVID-19 07:18 - Navigating Early Days as Bishop 08:58 - Demographics of the Ward 10:45 - Reflection on Serving as Bishop 11:19 - Responsibilities of a Bishop 15:43 - Challenges and Overwhelm in Leadership 17:00 - Mental Health Struggles and Support 20:05 - Finding Help and Guidance 21:57 - The Importance of Vulnerability in Leadership 30:02 - Opening Up to the Ward About Struggles 33:44 - The Sariah Factor in Leadership Decisions 38:21 - Examples of Leadership Challenges 49:02 - The Messiness of Revelation in Leadership 51:19 - Normalizing Struggles in Leadership The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints' mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead. Can you be a Christian without the church? In this timely episode, Dr. Carmen Imes argues forcefully—and pastorally—that Christianity without community is a contradiction. Drawing from her new book Becoming God's Family, she and Dru Johnson explore why so many people are walking away from church and what it would take to draw them back. From church hurt to spiritual abuse to toxic celebrity culture, Carmen doesn't shy away from the reasons people leave. But she also offers theological and pastoral wisdom on why we can't give up on the church. They explore biblical stories of failed community, why Hagar's story matters, and what healthy faithfulness looks like in a flawed body. They also discuss when it's time to leave a church, how American and global cultures can distort biblical community, and why true belonging means discomfort, difference, and even lament. Drawing on stories from her life and ministry, Carmen makes the case that church isn't about getting what we want—it's about becoming who we're meant to be. Alli Webb made a name for herself as the visionary behind the blow-dry empire Drybar, and now, she's stepping back into the world of haircare—this time with an entirely different approach. Her new haircare brand, Messy, which launched in Sephora and online earlier this summer, focuses on embracing your natural hair rather than trying to achieve the “perfect” blowout. The brand's ethos is directly tied to Webb's personal journey of leaving perfectionism behind after exiting Drybar in 2020. In this episode, she discusses how she developed the mantra-based product names, why the only thing she's “anti” is the idea of perfection, and the relationship between Messy and the “clean girl” aesthetic. Risky work. In order to grow forward, we must be willing to let go of old versions of Self, old identities, old stories, old patterns that no longer serve us. Unshakeable: Redefining Success on Your Own Terms In the pursuit of success, many individuals find themselves chasing external markers—such as wealth, recognition, or status—believing that these achievements will bring them happiness and fulfillment. However, as discussed in the podcast episode, true success, or "elegant success," is fundamentally about creating a life that aligns with your personal values and brings genuine satisfaction. Host Tonya Leigh explores the concept of elegant success—success that is rooted in personal values, alignment, and ease, rather than societal pressures to do more and be more. Tonya shares her reflections on the importance of creating a fulfilling life that feels good on the inside, as well as the challenges many are facing in today's uncertain world. Drawing from her personal experiences, including navigating her own emotional landscape during difficult times, she emphasizes the significance of managing one's nervous system and internal world to cultivate resilience and peace.  Tune in for insights that challenge traditional definitions of success and encourage listeners to redefine what it means to thrive. "I've encountered so much peace by just accepting that it's going to feel elegant and then it's going to feel messy again." "You cannot evolve and expect everyone to come with you." "The doubt that you may be feeling, well, it's not failure, it's just feedback." Doubt your impact as a mother (or a mother figure)? Don't—and we'll tell you why. In this special Mother's Day week episode, Darlene Brock and Julie Bender dissect the complicated role of being a mom. With days that are challenging, rewarding, or a heavy mixture of both, motherhood may incite guilt or prompt you to question whether you're doing anything right. The good news? If you're doing your best, you're absolutely doing it right. Darlene and Julie share their own personal motherhood anecdotes and offer encouragement for those days when you feel exhausted and uncertain. You have a bond with your child that can't be replicated in any of their other relationships. Even when you're not sure your child hears you or understands you or agrees with you, the way you show them your love will be the thread tying you together even in the most difficult seasons. Quote of the episode: “Even when you're messing up, it's important to remember that God put you here with this child for a reason for a season for a purpose.”—Julie Bender Resources Related "I Made a Change—and It Brought My Prodigal Home" "How Do We Handle the Messiness of Motherhood? with Laila Schell - 168" "A Little Encouragement with Motherhood Is Disappointing" Check out the Smart Living book series here!
