Overlooked Rules on Being a Useful Human - Essential Behavioural Psychology

You've read the productivity books. You've optimised your mornings. But what if the whole thing is backwards? Self-improvement content is everywhere, yet it almost universally focuses on extracting more value from yourself. This episode flips that. Drawing on behavioural psychology and a surprisingly useful analogy about cells and organs, Sam makes the case that the most effective thing you can do for your own growth is to become genuinely useful to the people around you. Not as a strategy. As a mindset. The inversion is simple: stop asking what moves you forward and start asking what moves others forward. Turns out, they're the same question. Why connection is as fundamental a skill as walking or talking How organisations actually hold together — and what that means for you Why kindness isn't soft advice; it's the core engine of sustainable success If the self-improvement content you've consumed hasn't quite stuck, this one might be the missing piece. Send us Fan MailTherefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.  Ephesians 6:13The world is messy.  The church is going through messy stuff as well.  How do we stay committed to the Gospel even when the things around us seem hopeless at times?  We are called to put on the Full Armor Of God and stand firm.  We do this by putting our hope in Christ and not in this world or the leaders in it.  We test every word and practice discernment -- something we are lacking in.  Finally, we strive for unity.  The church is as divided as ever.  We must major on the majors and minor on the minors in terms of what divides us.  In all of this, we ask for the Lord's leading and guidance.  When we do, we can stand firm even in messy days.

Pope Leo XIV's first Easter message, where he called for global peace amidst conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war and the US-Israeli war on Iran. The "messy" irony lies in the transition from a solemn papal address on world "ravaged by wars" to the interpersonal "messiness" and psychological pathology discussed in the following segments.   Guarding the Reservoir: Physical & Emotional Rebalancing 1. The Professional Martyr: Recognizing the Bait Decoding Passive-Aggression: Analyzing the "I'd love to just come float" comment. Recognizing it as a "loaded" statement meant to trigger guilt about your success, your pool, and your upcoming retirement. The Approval Trap: Acknowledging that they don't approve of your expenditures (pool resurfacing/safety) and why you no longer need their "stamp of approval" on your financial freedom. Protecting Your Space: Understanding that their inability to relax is her burden, not a flaw in your hospitality. You aren't "pulling her in" anymore; the pool is closed, and so is the door to her drama. 2. Healing from Past Emotional "Inflammation." The DC & Birthday Lessons: Reflecting on past vacations and birthdays ruined by a professional martyr The "Emergency" Pattern: The martyr's lack of planning or refusal to make hard choices became your emergency. Breaking the Cycle: Declaring that early retirement and your "new" life will not be a staging ground for their crisis-management. 3. The Physical Toll: Menopause & The Electrolyte Crash The Hormone Shift: Discussing the transition off HRT and the reality of "Black Girl Vitamins"—they help, but the body's chemistry is still in flux. The Sweetwater Incident: A deep dive into the "Full Body Crash." The danger of severe night sweats leading to "free water" loss and electrolyte depletion. The symptoms: Weakness in hands, knee pain, and full-body aches that feel like a setback in the anti-inflammatory journey. The Rebalancing Window: Acknowledging that it took 24+ hours to recover, highlighting how much more fragile our baseline is during hormonal shifts. 4. Lessons for the "Solo RV" Life Logistics vs. Physical Ability: The difficulty of managing hookups and setup when your body is depleted. The New "Pre-Flight" Checklist: * Prioritizing hydration protocols (Liquid IV, electrolyte powders) before the sweat starts. The necessity of organization: An unorganized RV + a depleted body = a dangerous combination. Planning for Weakness: Admitting that "muscle-ing through" isn't a strategy anymore; planning for physical conservation is. 5. Closing Thought: The Anti-Inflammatory Mindset Internal & External Peace: You can't heal systemic inflammation if you are constantly triggered by family or physically dehydrated. The Goal: A resurfaced pool deck, a safe home, a retirement free of guilt, and a body that is properly fueled for the road ahead. Harrison Bay Mantra: "My peace is non-negotiable, my signal is low, and my hydration is high." Protecting from mental depletion and financial Depletion, the scams of life: Just like you are setting boundaries with your sister by turning off your Wi-Fi calling at Harrison Bay, your listeners need to set "Financial Boundaries." Rule #1: No federal agent will ever come to your house for a "cash pickup." Rule #2: If they tell you to lie to your bank teller, they are 100% a criminal. I'm heading to Harrison Bay to get away from the noise, but the 'noise' isn't just family drama—it's these high-tech predators. Whether it's a martyr sister trying to steal your joy or a scammer trying to steal your retirement, the solution is the same: Disconnect. Verify. Protect your peace." He then taught in the Marriott School of Business at Brigham Young University and worked as an advisor to the Church before serving as a mission leader in the Arkansas Bentonville Mission. Jeff has since spent several years doing research on why people are leaving the Church. While not a professional researcher, his career involved a large amount of research and the research he shares in this podcast was done with the help of some of the top Latter-day Saint researchers in the world. Today, Jeff lives in Midway, Utah, and stays busy with a little lavender farm, some business consulting, and enjoying family. Joseph Grenny is a lifelong student of social science whose writings are references in major universities around the world. The conversation centers on how leaders and family members can navigate these emotionally charged discussions to preserve and strengthen relationships. 00:04:45 – The Importance of High-Stakes Conversations 00:06:17 – The Challenge of Faith Transitions 00:08:31 – The Need for Open Dialogue 00:09:50 – The Emotional Weight of Conversations 00:11:13 – The Impact of Poor Responses 00:12:21 – Preparing for Difficult Conversations 00:13:35 – Research Insights on Conversations 00:15:48 – Identifying Positive Deviants 00:16:29 – Learning from Successful Conversations 00:18:06 – The Role of Fear in Conversations 00:20:06 – Talking Under the Influence of Stress 00:22:40 – The Importance of Taking a Breather 00:25:23 – Three Key Steps for Effective Conversations 00:27:00 – Feeling Your Feelings 00:29:40 – Fixing Your Story 00:31:40 – Finding Your Motive 00:33:13 – The Transformative Power of Relationships 00:35:11 – Embracing the Messiness of Life 00:38:11 – The Role of God in Our Growth 00:40:45 – The Journey of Self-Discovery Key Insights The “Devoutness Paradox”: Research involving 15,000 participants found that the more devout a person is, the less likely a conversation about faith transition is to go well. If the recipient is a church leader, the odds of a negative outcome are 4.5 times higher than average. High Intensity of Need: Approximately 83% of individuals going through a faith transition reach out to others, typically contacting four to five people, indicating a deep desire for connection and resolution during the process. The Trap of “Problem-Solving”: Many leaders and parents react out of fear and an immediate impulse to “fix” the individual or bring them back to the church. This motive often leads to the other person feeling judged, berated, or suspected. The “Positive Deviant” Model: Some leaders and family members manage to maintain their own religious commitment while creating a safe, robust space for dialogue. These “positive deviants” prioritize the relationship over immediate theological conformity. Long-Lasting Consequences: The first few seconds of a conversation are pivotal; words spoken in moments of shock or vulnerability can endure for years and dictate the future trajectory of the relationship. Leadership Applications Shifting Motives: Leaders must move from a mindset of “correcting” to one of “listening and processing”. Recognizing that fear often drives the impulse to solve a problem can help leaders stay present and supportive rather than confrontational. Validating the Struggle: Leaders should normalize the reality that faith transitions are common and often a healthy part of a person’s individual journey . By acknowledging the difficulty without judgment, they empower the individual to feel heard rather than controlled. Leadership is often painted as a discipline with clear-cut answers and definitive frameworks. Books and coaches may promise step-by-step programs that lead to guaranteed success. However, true leadership is far more complex and nuanced—it is an ever-evolving journey that demands humility, self-awareness, and a willingness to continually learn. This episode dives deep into the misconception that anyone has it all figured out when it comes to leadership. Instead of promoting one-size-fits-all solutions, this discussion challenges leaders to embrace the messiness of leading people and organizations. By acknowledging that no leader ever truly "knows it all," individuals are empowered to adapt, experiment, and refine their approach. Listeners will be inspired to seek out learning opportunities in every experience, develop those around them, and become comfortable with the unknowns that naturally come with leadership. This honest perspective is crucial for leaders intent on building trust, resilience, and genuine growth—both for themselves and the teams and organizations they serve. 2026 carries a different energy. There are bigger opportunities available to you, and at the same time, you're upleveling your standards. There is a version of you that is ready for more. And that means it's time to clean up something simple but powerful: money messiness.    This isn't dramatic financial chaos. It's the subtle stuff. The subscription you never canceled. The savings account you keep meaning to fund. The rate you raised for one client but not the next. The late payment from a client that you let slide. The tax plan you're hoping works itself out.    But more importantly, money messiness is emotional leakage. It's small decisions left incomplete. And in a year where your income wants to expand, that leakage creates drag.   Tune in this week as I walk you through what money messiness actually looks like in 2026 and why cleaning it up now will shift your momentum immediately. You'll learn the simple three-step process I use with my clients to restore clarity fast, how small, fixable actions rebuild self-trust, and how steady financial habits support higher rates, stronger months, and real savings.   In this episode, I talk about: Why money messiness signals an uplevel.   Why small, incomplete money decisions create emotional drag on your income that is trying to grow.   The simple, three-step process to clean up money messiness quickly (and feel relief immediately).   Why closing just three money loops can shift your money confidence fast.   How creating one consistent money rhythm strengthens your relationship with money.    ~~   For full show notes, transcript, and to check out Your Pricing Breakthrough, click here: www.themoneycoachschoolpodcast.com/128

They share personal ministry journeys and describe the challenge of shifting established, often attractional church systems toward obedience-based disciple making rooted in the Great Commission (Matthew 28) and maturity in Christ (Colossians 1). Using an iPhone vs. Android operating system metaphor, they argue disciple making can't be added as a side program but must reshape the whole church. They present research findings that fewer than 5% of U.S. churches have a culture rooted in Jesus-style disciple making and outline four core practices seen in exemplary churches: convictional leadership, a contextual and reproducible model, high expectations, and cultural alignment. 00:00 Welcome & Why Disciple-Making Alignment Matters 04:03 Jeff Story: From Slogans to a Disciple-Making Culture 08:23 Paul: Leaving Membership Metrics for Making Disciples 13:24 Training Process Overview + The iPhone vs. Droid ‘Operating System' Metaphor 18:59 State of Disciple-Making in North America + Jesus' Intentional Relational Method 21:40 The Great Commission Explained: ‘Make Disciples' and Obedience-Based Faith 27:09 Beyond ‘Evangelism' vs ‘Discipleship': One Mission—Salvation to Maturity 32:38 Bobby's Journey: Coleman, Church Systems, Disciple Shift, and Renew's Theology 41:07 Research Findings: Why Most Churches Aren't Disciple-Making Churches 44:57 The 4 Core Practices: Convictional Leadership, Model, Expectations, Alignment 50:09 Why Revelation's First 3 Chapters Matter Most (Jesus & the Churches) 52:38 Legacy Church Challenge: Shifting to a Discipleship Culture Without Blowing It Up 54:05 Defining a Disciple: Follow Jesus, Be Changed, Join the Mission 56:01 Personal Discipleship Story: Learning to Make Disciples Who Make Disciples 57:24 Why People Struggle to Disciple: The Baseball Analogy 01:00:15 Early Momentum & Staff Culture Change: Baptisms, Next Steps, Monday Stories 01:02:01 The Discipleship Mandate ‘Cumulative': Jesus, Church, NT, Leaders, Gathering 01:11:43 Alignment Killers: Competing Agendas, Wrong Metrics, Instant-Result Expectations 01:13:36 10 Levers to Use (Not Demonize): Large Church, Sunday, Pulpit, Tradition, Doctrine 01:23:20 Five-Part Roadmap: Missional, Theological, Philosophical, Organizational, Relational 01:27:57 Break, Then Missional Alignment Deep Dive: Love God, Love People, Then Make Disciples 01:32:38 Avoiding Counterfeit Missions: Tradition, Buildings, and Other Substitutes 01:33:20 C.S. What happens when curiosity meets uncertainty...live? In this inaugural episode of Ask The Skeptic Metaphysicians, Will and Karen step out from behind the edit button and into real-time conversation, answering viewer questions about spirituality, consciousness, relationships, doubt, and everything in between. This episode matters now because more people are questioning old assumptions about spiritual awakening, but don't want dogma, gurus, or tidy answers that collapse under scrutiny.Episode Overview This is the first episode in a new monthly live series, Ask The Skeptic Metaphysicians, streaming on YouTube, Facebook, and New Reality TV. Every second Tuesday of the month, Will and Karen go live to answer questions directly from the community—ranging from deeply personal (“How did you two meet?”) to existential (“Why does growth feel so messy?”). In this kickoff conversation, they explore what five years of podcasting about consciousness, metaphysics, and modern spirituality have actually taught them, especially the parts that don't fit neatly into spiritual soundbites. The result is a candid, sometimes playful, sometimes challenging discussion that treats uncertainty as a feature, not a flaw.Key Insights & TakeawaysSpiritual growth isn't linear: Progress looks less like a straight path and more like a spiral, trampoline, or series of returns, with shorter lows and deeper perspective over time.Messiness isn't failure: Confusion, doubt, and emotional swings aren't signs you're doing spirituality “wrong”; they're often part of the process.Mainstream people are having non-mainstream experiences: Doctors, accountants, tech workers—spiritual curiosity is far more common than people admit out loud.Content consumption isn't transformation: Watching videos or listening to podcasts doesn't automatically equal growth; discernment and integration still matter.Questioning doesn't cancel intuition: Doubt and intuition can coexist—and often should—especially in modern spirituality. Why This Conversation Is Different There's no pitch, no promise of enlightenment, and no claim that one path fits all. Will and Karen openly disagree, challenge each other's assumptions, and acknowledge what they don't know. That includes questioning spiritual hierarchies, resisting “my way is the only way” thinking, and calling out spiritual bypassing when it shows up. This episode models what skeptical, grounded exploration of manifestation, soul purpose, and consciousness can actually sound like, without abandoning reason or wonder. A Note for the Listener You're allowed to explore without committing to belief. Curiosity does not make you naïve. Skepticism does not make you closed. This space exists precisely for people who live in the middle.Join Us Live Next Time This is just the beginning. Ask The Skeptic Metaphysicians happens live every second Tuesday of the month, and your questions help shape the conversation. Tune in, bring your curiosity, and ask the questions you've been holding back.

Then, the hosts dive into this weeks book, Francine's Spectacular Crash and Burn by Renéé Swindle. This is a novel about grief, longing, and the chaos that follows when good intentions collide with poor boundaries. The ladies walk through the story of Francine Stevenson, unpacking her relationships, her unraveling sense of self, and the complicated choices that turn connection into consequence. The discussion includes how grief can blur judgment, how desire can masquerade as healing, and how self-deception often feels like survival. Along the way, they talk about healing through connection, emotional avoidance, abuse, and what accountability looks like when harm isn't intentional but still very real. From family enterprises to executive teams, he explains how unspoken fears, emotional blind spots, and “elephants in the room” quietly block creativity and decision-making. This episode is a must-listen for leaders navigating complexity, legacy, and high-stakes conversations—at work and at home.[00:00 – 02:30] Innovation Begins Where Certainty EndsWhy innovation often emerges from confusion, fear, and discomfort—not clarity.Rene's global experience working with leaders and enterprise families. The link between emotional honesty and transformational leadership.[02:31 – 05:50] The Elephant in the Family RoomWhat leaders lose when they avoid naming the real issue. How trapped energy and unspoken tension collapse creativity. Why this dynamic shows up in families, boards, and executive teams alike.[05:51 – 09:40] Leaders Don't Have Decision Problems—They Have Emotion-Naming ProblemsHow fear hijacks the nervous system and shuts down innovation.Fight, flight, or freeze responses in leadership settings. Why regulation—not fearlessness—creates better decisions.[09:41 – 13:30] “Flipping the Lid” and the Amygdala HijackHow psychological threats trigger reactive leadership behavior. Why leaders say “the wrong thing” under pressure. The importance of pausing, breathing, and naming emotions to restore clarity.[13:31 – 16:40] Naming Fear as the Gateway to BreakthroughWhy innovation cannot thrive in environments of fear or walking on eggshells. How truth-telling frees energy and reactivates creativity.A real-world example of long-stuck family dynamics unlocking new possibilities.[16:41 – 19:20] Authenticity, Messiness, and Modern LeadershipWhy authenticity is becoming increasingly rare. The cost of performative leadership—especially in the age of social media. Why innovation flourishes when leaders allow complexity and humanity.[19:21 – 22:50] Stories, Identity, and the Lids We Put on OurselvesHow internal narratives limit leadership capacity. Why the lies we believe quietly cap innovation.Reframing leadership as presence, not perfection.[22:51 – 25:10] Ecosystems That Support InnovationWhy environment matters—at work and at home. The connection between place, pace, and creative capacity.Designing a life and leadership context that allows innovation to breathe.[25:11 – 27:40] Final Reflections: Innovation as a PracticeWhy innovation is not a performance—but a daily practice.Rene's parting message on courage, imagination, and trust. How naming truth transforms fear into possibility.Quotes“Innovation doesn't start with what we put on paper. Do you sometimes over-rely on data to cover yourself instead of trusting your judgment? Episode 257 of At The Table explores why leaders often cling to data, certainty, and predictability—even though business is inherently messy. Pat and Cody discuss how fear of failure drives over-analysis, slowing decisions and weakening judgment. Ultimately, they argue that great leadership is an art fueled by instinct, courage, and human interaction—not algorithms or metrics.Topics explored in this episode: (03:15) Data vs. Instinct in Real Business* Why instinct and common sense dominate real executive decision-making.* The human tendency to return to predictability even when it repeatedly fails.(06:29) When Data Misleads and Context Matters* How statistical predictions often fail to capture real-life variables.* How leaders hide behind numbers to avoid personal responsibility.(09:13) The Power of Seeing the Problem Directly* How over-reliance on data can obscure common sense and slow down problem-solving.(11:40) Business as Art, Not Science* The modern trend toward treating business as a purely scientific discipline.* Why instinct and integrative thinking will never be replaced by either data or AI.This episode of At The Table with Patrick Lencioni is brought to you by The Table Group: https://www.tablegroup.com. Leon Purton strolled in for a chat in today's ep and we tumbled straight into that familiar territory you and I love... identity, leadership, masks, messy middles, self-belief, crucible moments, and why so many of us chase gold stars instead of growth. Leon unpacked how the Air Force shaped him, how a divorce cracked him open, how perfection cost him connection, and how he rebuilt himself by dropping armour instead of adding more. We danced through stories about boxing, leadership, values, and those little internal kids in us who just want a pat on the head. And mate… did we hit some big realisations about self-belief, surrender, stillness, and the weird way life forces you to grow in directions you never would’ve picked from the safety of your twenties. It was honest, warm, insightful, vulnerable, and bloody funny. A proper good yarn… I hope you love it! Golden Lund holds three degrees in music from the University of Utah, Indiana University and the University of Nebraska. He is currently a music instructor at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, where he helps direct the marching band, pep band, and teaches tuba and other brass instruments. He also performs regularly on the tuba with a semi-professional orchestra in Lincoln, Nebraska. Golden was recently released as a bishop and served in several leadership capacities previously including elders quorum president, high priest group leader, Young Men president, and on his stake high council. Golden and his wife Sandy have been married for 17 years and are the proud parents of two children—a daughter and son who are 12-year-old twins and amaze them every day. Links Transcript available with the video in the Zion Lab community Highlights In this episode of the Leading Saints podcast, Kurt interviews Golden, a former bishop from Bettendorf, Iowa, who shares his experiences and insights from his five-year tenure in leadership during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. The conversation focuses on mental health, vulnerability in leadership, and the importance of community support. Key Insights: Mental Health Awareness: Golden discusses his struggles with mental health, particularly during a significant crash after a year and a half of service. He emphasizes the importance of seeking help and the positive impact of counseling and medication. Vulnerability in Leadership: By sharing his personal challenges with his ward, Golden fostered a culture of openness, encouraging others to share their struggles and creating a supportive environment. The Sariah Factor: Golden introduces the concept of the Sariah Factor, highlighting the need for leaders to trust their perspective and discernment, even when others may not understand the decisions being made. Delegation and Empowerment: He shares how he empowered his ward leaders, such as the Relief Society and Elders Quorum presidents, to take on responsibilities, which helped alleviate his workload and fostered a sense of ownership among leaders. Community Support: Golden underscores the importance of community, noting that members often overlook the challenges faced by their leaders. Simple expressions of gratitude can significantly uplift those in leadership roles. Leadership Applications: Encourage Open Communication: Leaders should create an environment where members feel comfortable sharing their struggles, which can strengthen community bonds and support. Prioritize Mental Health: Leaders should recognize the importance of mental health and seek help when needed, setting an example for others to do the same. Empower Others: By delegating responsibilities and trusting ward leaders, bishops can manage their workload more effectively while fostering leadership skills in others, ultimately benefiting the entire ward. 05:32 - Calling as Bishop During COVID-19 07:18 - Navigating Early Days as Bishop 08:58 - Demographics of the Ward 10:45 - Reflection on Serving as Bishop 11:19 - Responsibilities of a Bishop 15:43 - Challenges and Overwhelm in Leadership 17:00 - Mental Health Struggles and Support 20:05 - Finding Help and Guidance 21:57 - The Importance of Vulnerability in Leadership 30:02 - Opening Up to the Ward About Struggles 33:44 - The Sariah Factor in Leadership Decisions 38:21 - Examples of Leadership Challenges 49:02 - The Messiness of Revelation in Leadership 51:19 - Normalizing Struggles in Leadership The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints' mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead.
