Nakkiah Lui (Kamilaroi/Torres Strait Islander) is one of Australia's most incisive, provocative, and funniest writers. Never one to follow convention, when she was asked to consider adapting a 'classic', Nakkiah Lui chose the divisive 90s Hollywood flop, Showgirls. Blaque Showgirls is now on at the Griffin Theatre Company. Also, Sandaime Richard, a Japanese play inspired by Shakespeare's Richard III, was radically transformed by the Singaporean director Ong Keng Sen in a 2016 production that brought together performers from across Asia. Now, Keng Sen is revisiting the text with a troupe of students at NIDA.
Today we are joined by Matty's co-stars from Nakkiah Lui's 'Blaque Showgirls' Angeline Penrith and Stephanie Somerville tell us about the show and what it means to be proud Black Creatives. Plus, it is an emotional time for Brooke and Matty with it being the anniversary of when they lost their siblings. Brooke and Matty open up about how they feel this time of year and give honest and forthright account of how they are coping. Reality tv has always been a contentious category of television especially when it comes to authenticity and finding true love. Many of us love the drama, the tropes and stereotyping, even if we're just poking fun at it. This session at All About Women 2023 explored Brooke Blurton's time on The Bachelorette and Rosie Waterland's satirical take on dating shows. Hosted by Nakkiah Lui, they delve into what it's like to participate in traditionally heteronormative dating shows as a queer person, trying to find a genuine connection on tv and what this voyeuristic search for romance reveals about Australian culture. This event was recorded live at the Sydney Opera House in March 2023. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Kamilaroi and Torres Strait Islander woman Nakkiah Lui has many strings to her bow: actor, comedian, playwright, TV host, podcaster, director, storyteller, publisher but none that she identifies more proudly with than writer. Nakkiah is also a fashionista starring on the first Australian cover of the relaunched Harper's Bazaar Magazine. In this episode Jess and Nakkiah dig deep on her life, from the horrific bullying she endured as child, to her emerging gift of storytelling, something she has manifested into an international career. While Nakkiah has risen to become one of the country's most in-demand playwrights and screenwriters, she credits imposter syndrome for her unwavering drive and determination, a behaviour she's now trying to unlearn as she navigates a new chapter in her life, motherhood. Nothing is off-limits in this conversation between American writer Roxane Gay and screenwriter Nakkiah Lui as these two incredible women whose work challenges us with the hard questions about racism and misogyny today. Both known for speaking with radical authenticity about their own experiences of racism, misogyny, and trauma, expect razor-sharp commentary on issues such as young women's personal testimonies disclosing violence and sexual assault, the Black Lives Matter movement, and how these issues play out differently for Black women in the US and First Nations and other women of colour in Australia.Recorded live at the Sydney Opera House for All About Women 2022.-Watch other talks on Stream. A new talent called Budjerah launched on the music scene towards the end of 2020 with the single ‘Missing You’. Hailing from Bundjalung country in far north NSW, he impressed everyone immediately with that pure and soulful voice. Singing has been his whole life. Raised on gospel music at church, he says he sings every day, and has for as long as he can remember. He was spotted by a major label after his cousin reposted a video first uploaded by Budjerah’s mum. That cousin is Nakkiah Lui from Black Comedy fame, and through her sharing that live video, Warner Music came calling. Budjerah (whose name means ‘first light’) had attracted other early fans. Through AIME mentor Robbie Miller, Matt Corby was also tipped off about the young talent. Now, the 19yo has released his debut EP which Corby went on to record with him in his studio outside Byron Bay. Hear Budjerah talking more about his upbringing and love of music with Richard Kingsmill.

Ordinarily this end-of-year reckoning would occur on stage at the ANU amid low-grade insults directed at vice-chancellor and Bundt-auteur Brian Schmidt, but as with many pleasurable events in 2020 it was binned. Screw you, 2020! With their remaining nanoparticles of neural capacity, the pair recap what they can remember of what they read, watched, cooked, and listened to in this plague year. Today's episode features Kelly Dent of World Animal Protection talking about ending the global wildlife trade. The global trade in wildlife is worth hundreds of billions of dollars annually and includes both the legal and illegal trade in animals. While the Convention on International Trade in Endangered species of Wild Fauna and Flora boasts a membership of 183 countries, many argue it is insufficient, unsustainable and ineffective to protect vulnerable, endangered and critically endangered species. The system is full of loopholes which allow trade in wildlife to continue unchecked, with very little ability to differentiate between legal and illegal trade. Calls to end the global wildlife trade have been growing through this pandemic, not only due to the likelihood that COVID-19 is a zoonotic pathogen, meaning it comes from animals, but also due to the sheer cost of the pandemic to human life and economy. As the population grows, pressure on wildlife and wild places also grows, meaning more interaction between both and more likelihood of animal / human conflict and disease transmission. I invited Kelly Dent to chat about why we need a blanket ban on the trade in wildlife. Kelly is the Director of External Engagement with World Animal Protection and a lifelong activist and has 25 years experience lobbying and campaigning on climate change, poverty, corporate accountability, trade, labour and human rights around the world. Kelly is reading 'Such a Fun Age' by Kiley Reid; 'Anna Karenina' by Leo Tolstoy; 'Why we love dogs, eat pigs and wear cows' by Melanie Joy; 'Me and White Supremacy' by Layla F Saad. Kelly is listening to 7AM; 'Nice White Parents' New York Times; 'Debutante: Race, Resistance and Girl Power' by Nakkiah Lui & Miranda Tapsell; Rabbit Hole, New York Times.
For almost all of us, mentioning the words Primary or High School are enough to bring back memories of endlessly creative, but equally cutting nicknames, random acts of ridicule and outright bullying. Reliving her school days in a convo with her bestie Michael, Em realised she has always been made to feel like an ‘other' and it's had a resounding effect on her entire life. It means that Em has become relentlessly competitive and pushes herself to achieve great things, just so she can fit into this Australian ideal of what a woman should be. It's only recently that she's realised she's never going to fit that ideal and that's okay. To survive, she searched out other ‘others', and eventually made peace with who she is and came to the realisation that she is enough. After that cathartic release, it's on to Masterchef, where their tasting challenge offered up cubed morsels of food for identification, although Em was unhappy with the standard of some of the ‘mystery' items, especially when her 1 year old Elio could easily identify things like apple and carrot. They were sad to see Brendan go home, and Em even tried really hard to find some nice things to say about Andy, plus they think they've finally arrived at who they want to win and created a winning slogan for them to use too. They also take some time to shine a light on a great new podcast from Nakkiah Lui and Miranda Tapsell. It's called ‘Debutante: Race, Resistance and Girl Power' and reveals how important Deb balls are to the Indigenous community and how they've reclaimed them as a result. It also brings everything full circle because both Em and Michael's debutante experience only helped to add to their High School trauma, so get ready for a lot of reliving the past and laughing in the face of it as well. When I say ‘debutante ball' what comes to mind for you? A bunch of teenage girls, giggling, buzzing with nerves and excitement, dressed in flowing gowns, off to a flash venue, for the night of their lives, ready to debut into society - whatever that means. When you picture those girls and that event, do you picture them as being Aboriginal? And, if I told you that Aboriginal people have a history with the debutante ball that reaches back to the 1967 referendum, would you be surprised? Debutante: Race, Resistance and Girl Power is the brand new podcast from none other than the dynamic duo that is Nakkiah Lui and Miranda Tapsell. From the 16th of June, through this audible original podcast, you'll be able to follow their journey from a teatime etiquette lesson in London, where the concept for the debutante ball began, along a trail to discover how First Nations women across the globe have made this tradition their own. Nakkiah and Miranda ask: can beauty, poise and politeness actually empower them? Or is it better to get angry and start shouting? I am absolutely thrilled to say, Nakkiah and Miranda are my guests on todays podcast. As huge admirer of both of their works, to say it was hard not to fangirl on this zoom call I had with them, is an understatement. In this chat, we talk about the new podcast, feminism, sisterhood, beauty in a black body and why they love working together. . . .
