Many leaders, particularly women, have been conditioned to view power as a negative force associated with dominance, control, and giving away one's agency to others. This limiting perspective often creates an inner conflict, preventing individuals from fully embracing their innate power and leading with authenticity.Find the full show notes at: https://workmatters.com/Redefining-Power--A-Call-to-Live-and-Lead-without-Apology-with-Kemi-Nekvapil

In this powerful conversation, Sue Bryce and Kemi Nekvapil discuss the power of asking and the impact it can have on our lives. They explore the vulnerability of writing and speaking, the fear and importance of setting boundaries, and the reasons why women often struggle to ask for what they need and want. Kemi shares her insights from her book 'Power' and emphasizes the belief that everyone is worthy of asking. The conversation concludes with a manifesto of asking, highlighting the various areas in life where we can practice asking for more, setting boundaries, and expressing our needs and desires. Kemi shares her experience of being fostered by white families and feeling the need to be a “good black girl” in order to be accepted. This fear of asking for help or support carried into her adult life, leading to feelings of overwhelm and isolation. Kemi emphasizes the importance of vulnerability and letting others in, as well as the power of asking for help. She also highlights the impact of not asking and taking ownership of our own actions and choices. Ultimately, Kemi encourages creating a world where women can show up unapologetically and empower others. Topics Why women often struggle to ask for what they truly want and how it impacts our lives The fear of asking can stem from past experiences and the need to be accepted or approved of. Kemi shares her personal experiences being a black child being fostered by white families and how this affected her life Vulnerability is necessary for building connections and allowing others to support us. How we can start asking for what we truly desire to make positive changes in our life By not asking for help or support, we may unintentionally take away others' agency and prevent them from stepping into their own power. Taking ownership of our actions and choices is essential for personal growth and creating positive change. Asking for what we want and need opens doors and allows us to receive what is meant for us.

Join us in this empowering episode as we dive into the world of personal power with renowned leadership coach Kemi Nekvapil. In her latest book,
When you hear the word ‘power', what first springs to mind? Do you immediately think of its absence, the moments you felt ‘power-less' – or the moments you showed up as the fullest version of yourself? Is ‘power' a word or sensation that feels like it belongs to you? Or is it a word that usually belongs to someone else?My guest today wants to redefine how we think, approach and own the word ‘power' in our lives. Today's Guest Kemi Nekvapil is one of Australia's leading coaches for female executives and entrepreneurs. She describes her life's work as being to ‘empower women to live and lead without apology'. Kemi is a certified facilitator for Brenè Brown's ‘Dare To Lead' program, and also a facilitator for The Hunger Project Australia which works with communities to enable them to realize a future free from hunger and poverty. She is also a highly sought after international speaker and author who has just published her latest book: ‘Power; A woman's guide to living and leading without apology'. The book looks at how to navigate the inevitable challenges we face from a place of unapologetic power – in order to show up at the highest possible level. Instagram: @keminekvapilLinked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kemi-nekvapil-58000027/You'll LearnThe true meaning of the word power, and how it's our definitions of the word – rather than our own innate strength – that keeps us small. What stops us from stepping into our power. Including all the ways we give our power away, in order to feel a sense of safety and belonging. The right questions to ask to reclaim your sense of power. In particular, when faced with people and situations that would usually make us shrink. Why real power is often found in the quiet moments, the small decisions, the micro-choices – rather than the big grand gestures. Finally, how to access your intuition and realize that the greatest power comes from outwardly trusting your inner voice. For me, the word ‘power' has shifted in meaning, particularly over the last few years. Previously it had the energy of pushing. Building, creating, showing up, using your voice – changing what needs to be changed. Forcing where necessary. Yet now, largely thanks to this podcast. That's fundamentally shifted. Now when I think about the word ‘power', when I embody it, when I witness it - the feeling is one of ‘pulling'. Showing up and holding yourself with such clarity, such intention, such gravity. That the right people and situations are quite literally pulled towards you. That to me is real power.References and links mentionedhttps://www.keminekvapil.com/If you liked this episode, you might also enjoyDeb GruenfeldThanks for tuning into this week's episode of the Inside Influence Podcast! In the second half of Cicely's conversation with Kemi Nekvapil, they dive deeper into the challenges professional women face in trying to balance work and family. Kemi shares advice for women who struggle with feeling they must be in service to others and that it's a zero-sum game between their career and personal life. Kemi also talks about the importance of women seeing themselves as equals and partners both at home and in the workplace, rather than subservient caretakers. She provides insights on how to advocate for your needs and values while also caring for others with compassion. Tune in for Kemi's wisdom on embracing your power as a woman to thrive in both your career and personal life.
Kemi Nekvapil, executive coach and author of POWER: A Woman's Guide to Living and Leaving without Apology, shares how women are shifting the landscape when it comes to leadership and power. Allowing for an abundance of power enables us to promote and support each other, rather than hold power over each other and compete. “I'm not afraid of your power,” says Nekvapil. “If I have power, I will happily stand alongside you, support you, and elevate your power in the same way that you will elevate my power, because we're both standing in who we truly are in the world.” Katty Kay, journalist and coauthor of THE POWER CODE: More Joy. Less Ego. Maximum Impact for Women (and Everyone), further explores the history and meaning of power. “Most of the studies of power and what power is, what it means, who has it, and how it should be wielded, have been drawn up by men over the centuries,” says Kay. “Understandably, they were the ones that had power.”

You might know Brooke Blurton as Australia's first Indigenous, bisexual Bachelorette. Or perhaps as the contestant who walked away from the Honeybadger, on his infamous season of The Bachelor. You might have also seen her on Bach in Paradise. But Brooke is so much more than just a reality television OG. Brooke's journey to success came out of a childhood filled with unimaginable challenges, enormous loss but most importantly, immense love. Brooke is a podcaster, author and a youth worker, and we sat down for an in-depth conversation about the way that Brooke's childhood and survival mentality created the hustle mindset that stays with her today. We talked about grief and losing a parent, and our shared experiences in child protection. This led us into a deep conversation about community and culture, and the experience of First Nations Australians. It was such a beautiful conversation and one that I was so excited to be having, after reading Brooke's brilliant autobiography, BigLove. Brooke also stars in the Audible Original podcast, POWER Talks with Kemi Nekvapil (www.audible.com.au/powertalks), which is free for Audible members and non-members. You'll hear all about it in this episode, as we unpacked many of the themes that arose through her session with Kemi. You can find Brooke on Insta at @brooke.blurton. Raised in foster care, Kemi wrestled with a sense of powerlessness that only began to shift as she questioned the status quo as an adult. “Society rewards women for saying yes to everyone else.” - Kemi Nekvapil Does the thought of articulating your needs and desires make you uncomfortable? It's probably no surprise to hear that humans, particularly women, have a challenging time speaking up for what they want and need. In this thoughtful conversation, Meg speaks with Kemi Nekvapil, author of ‘The Gift of Asking: A Women's guide to owning her wants and needs without guilt' and ‘Power: A Woman's Guide to Living and Leading Without Apology'. You will learn why asking for what you need is actually a gift to oneself and a way to strengthen relationships. The episode delves into the impacts of not asking and provides valuable insights for cultivating better communication and connection. How often do we throw away our power? How often do we fall into the trap of letting other people decide our worth and value and mostly because we default to pleasing or wanting to be liked or avoiding upsetting someone? I'm joined by Kemi Nekvapil - executive and personal coach for female leaders, global speaker and author of Power - A woman's guide to living and leading without apology. We will be talking about her book, which I cannot speak highly enough of. She has done an extraordinary job of redefining POWER to make it feel both accessible and enticing. What I personally have come to really admire about Kemi is her ability, and it's very much a conscious choice, to rise above the small stuff. Her motivation is far bigger than most people's motivation. She is driven by a social awareness and a desire to make the world a better place. When you spend time with someone like this, it's hard not to think about what is happening outside your little own microcosm, the impact of your behaviour and even what else is possible. Kemi Nekvapil is one of Australia's leading credentialed coaches for female executives and entrepreneurs, author of two books and a highly sought-after international speaker. Her first book ‘The Gift Of Asking: A woman's guide to owning her wants and needs without guilt' is a wonderful handbook for each of us. But today we discuss her latest publication ‘Power: A woman's guide to living and leading without apology', that I discovered via Elizabeth Gilbert's book club. Kemi has studied leadership and purpose at The Gross National Happiness Centre in Bhutan and trained with Dr Brené Brown to become a Certified Dare to Lead™ Facilitator. She is a powerful advocate for connected, value-based living. You can discover more and follow her on Instagram @keminekvapil and via her site https://www.keminekvapil.com/ I am not a huge fan of ‘how to' books but Power is so much more. Filled with anecdotes and a personal narrative, it is so easy to read and enjoy. Kemi gave me a huge insight into the challenges of living as a minority and made me deeply aware of my white privilege. We talk about choosing where to birth and where power goes in the birthing room. She shares her two birth journey's and the work she did in preparation to wholeness and readiness. We talk about how we disappear by being a “good girl” and “a good wife”, the journey of transitioning from maiden to mother, and how she knew in her soul she wanted to mother her children in a different way. Have you ever felt that flutter in your gut when faced with a crossroads? Your heart may skip a beat or butterflies erupt when soul-searching for your next powerful step. But then your mind gets in the way. My next guest had five primary carers from the age of 2 weeks to 13 years old living as a foster child from a Nigerian family born in Britain. Her childhood was full of instability and uncertainty, moving from home to home. She found her power when she was offered a choice at the age of 13. Her entire world stood still in this moment. She had never realised she had the right to choose. I'm so grateful to be bringing you the incredible Kemi Nekvapil. I believe she is one of the best business coaches in the world! Kemi's career is a rich tapestry and her wealth of knowledge spans across many fields. Kemi went to a baking college and worked as a chef on and off for 17 years. At the same time, she plunged herself into drama school and worked hard to become a very successful actor. Her body of work includes a leading role in a British television series for 3 and a half years (even writing her own role for the last 6 months), working for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and performing in a film with Colin Firth in the South of France. We talk about the crossroads Kemi felt when deciding the path her career should take after such phenomenal success in acting. She followed her instinct and listened to her ‘Divine Download' to take the adventurous chef opportunity across the world in Thailand where she met her husband. She stresses the importance of listening to your intuition to become in tune with your gut, heart, and mind. Kemi was chosen from thousands to be trained as a facilitator for Dr Brene Browns' Dare to Lead curriculum in Texas. She talks about her journey connecting with Brene and finding her power to lead exactly as herself without needing to fit into the patriarchal, white, male model. In her coaching practice, Kemi works with other female leaders to overcome their challenges and succeed in their fields. We're all connected with nature and go through seasons and transformations. Kemi advises us, as women, to not do the disservice of ignoring the change when it's happening. She created the ‘Delight Diaries' to encourage her community to revel in the beauty of nature and the little moments every day that make us feel happy and alive. I can't wait for you to listen to Kemi's transformative, courageous, and powerful story. If you'd like to learn more, Kemi has written two books, 'The Gift of Asking' and ‘Raw Beauty'. She has a third book coming out very soon about women in power. Kemi Nekvapil is one of Australia's leading coaches for female executives and entrepreneurs, as well as an author and a highly sought-after international speaker. Her latest book is Power: a woman's guide to living and leading without apology, and in this chat with our editor Kirsty, she talks about some of the stories and ideas behind writing it.
Kemi Nekvapil is a long time friend of the podcast, we shared a conversation back in episode 44, in which she shares some of her background story. As a black child raised by five sets of white foster parents (some incredibly loving, some - not so much) she always felt that she had to prove her worth. In this conversation we shift more into Kemi's message and impactful new book simply - but also importantly titled - “Power - a woman's guide to living and leading without apology'. We talk about what women are apologising for, how we can harness and step into our power, and the power of joy and delight (which can sometimes be the hardest to give ourselves permission to feel). Kemi is a professionally credentialed coach so if you want to find out more about Kemi's work make sure you connect and reach out to her. For now though, allow the sheer joy to come through the airwaves to you from the always incredible Kemi. https://www.keminekvapil.com/ https://www.instagram.com/keminekvapil/?utm_medium=copy_link https://www.keminekvapil.com/power-book
Kemi Nekvapil grew up in foster care and had experienced five different homes by the age of 13. Time after time she had the doors to validation and opportunity closed to her because of her race and her gender. It wasn't until Sue, one of her foster mothers asked her what she wanted to do when she left school that she began to learn the power of choice. In this episode Kemi shares of her journey and how it has all lead to her becoming the fierce and unapologetically incredible women she is today. Kemi shares more about; Women in leadership Her passionate role with The Hunger Project and how it sees things from the coaching lens to help communities in developing countries get the support they need to build and elevate their communities How we all have a role because we are all human and nobody's input should ever be dismissed How she turned down the role of a lifetime to direct, produce and star in a television show, to pursue her passion as a young woman - food and yoga How she now helps people explore who they are What power truly is and how we can tap into our own power because nobody is coming to save us, but at the same time we must learn to be vulnerable to get the support we deserve. I'm so excited to present our next miniseries in partnership with SEEK. It has brought so much yay to mix up the format and zoom in on particular facets of seizing your yay, so allow me to introduce Finders, SEEKers. You've all heard me rave on and on about how life unravels in many different chapters and how the most uncomfortable, scary changes in our lives are usually the most transformative and exciting. One of the many silver linings of an otherwise undesirable few years is the opportunity to clear the slate of habit and obligation to actively SEEK those changes you've always dreamed of. And there truly is NO better time than now with more jobs around than ever before but less applications per job ad driven by a shortage of candidates. The Great Job Boom is upon us and yet 45% of Aussies are worried their skills and resume won't stack up against other Aussies... So in Finders, SEEKers, we have a host of amazing guests from coaches to intrapreneurs to help kick those nays to the curb and turn them into yays by making your next move. I'm thrilled to welcome our very first guest, Kemi Nekvapil, who returns to the show for the second time and how lucky we are to have her again... Go back to episode 50 to hear her full back story, but to recap, Kemi embodies the idea of the non-linear pathway spending her childhood with five different foster families with as many different careers covering stage and TV acting, professional baking and yoga teaching. All before finding her calling as a speaker, coach and author of two brilliant books – The Gift of Asking and, published only recently, Power. Consider yourselves lucky yayborhood to have an hour of Kemi's time, her coaching is highly sought after and if you've ever been considering making a change towards seizing your yay, she's the woman you need to hear from...
