Based on a recent earnings call held on April 23, 2024, Kimberly-Clark shared its performance highlights and future strategies. CEO Mike Hsu reported, "Overall, in the quarter, we were up and even in just under 60% of our market category combinations. Although I would say also flat on a weighted basis, and we look at share in two ways on both metrics. [...] Importantly, I'd say North America improving. North America was up or even in 6 of 8 categories," underscoring the company's solid performance this quarter. He further shed light on the fact that the company's positive performance was driven by a new social media campaign revolving around cold, flu, and allergy season, along with restoration of merchandising, which had been paused for several months. The company's successes this quarter were multifaceted and showed particular strength in invigorating its categories via original innovation and expansion into new markets. The brand performance, especially the success of key products like Huggies and Kleenex, in strategic markets like China and the US, demonstrated the integral role these brands play in Kimberly-Clark's portfolio. In terms of consumer trends, Kimberly-Clark observed a preference for premium products in developed and emerging markets, regardless of some middle to lower-income households trading down within certain categories. This trend emphasizes the resilience of the Kimberly-Clark portfolio to cater to diverse consumer demands.Looking ahead, Kimberly-Clark plans to refine its operating model by October 1, 2024. The company plans signature investments in advertising and digital marketing, underpinned by a $3 billion productivity initiative. Hsu shed light on the company's thoughtful approach to investment, "we are making significant technology and capacity investments and so we really want to be more choiceful as we go forward about where we spend that capital." This sentiment highlights the firm's strategic shift towards differentiating their brands backed by proprietary, science-based innovation. In conclusion, Kimberly-Clark's fiscal health, as exhibited in the earnings call, reflects the company's strategic capacity to drive growth through honing product initiatives and understanding consumer trends, whilst maintaining a focus on cost optimization and innovation. However, the future performance will be contingent on their ability to successfully execute these strategies and navigate any potential market uncertainties. As acknowledged in the earnings call, while there is optimism grounded in their strategic initiatives, navigating the future landscape will require adaptability and responsiveness to changing market dynamics. After helping mold and define the counter-culture of the late sixties and early 70s, Neil Young pulled an about face in the 80s, throwing his support behind Ronald Reagan, the war on drugs, and welfare reform. Tired of being pigeonholed, he shifted away from the socially conscious folk rock he was known for, releasing a series of headscratching albums that saw him experimenting with rockabilly, banjos and vocoders. Geffen Records became so fed up with his new direction that they sued him for 3.2 million dollars. On the Season 4 premiere of Make It Stop, we discuss the album that came on the heels of that court case's settlement -- 1986's Landing On Water. A bizarre amalgamation of all the worst that the 80s had to offer, the album explodes with ear splitting drums and tinny synths. There is nary a bass player to be found. Neil eschews both the personal and the political in most of his lyrics, instead settling into a banal sort of opacity. Joining the fray to try to make sense of it all are fellow Pantheon podcasters and longtime local legends Mike Hsu and Luke Condon, hosts of deep dive Neil Young podcast Long May You Young. Make It Stop is finally back, dear stoppies. If you missed the bickering and sniping and the endless war between the factions of pro-ska and pro-nu-metal as much as we did, then you're in for quite a treat! Part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Our guest this week had quite an extraordinary life. After growing up inside the Detroit Pistons organization, he moved to Alaska to pursue a passion for hard work and his music. He has done both, including lumber-jacking and a 6 year world tour. His new album will be out in September on Blue Arrow Records and in the words of Bob Cratchett, it's a triumph, mixing folk and blues with noise rock and feedback. Follow Ethan on Facebook or at ethandanieldavidson.com for news. Follow us @PerformanceAnx and subscribe, rate, & review. Check us and a host of other great shows out on Pantheon Podcasts, including great shows like Long May You Young where Mike Hsu & the Condon Boys review every Neil Young album, chronologically & hilariously. For decades, Mistress Carrie entertained - and bonded with - the masses on legendary Boston rock station WAAF. Earlier this year, the station was sold, ending its 50 year run on the air. Carrie takes us behind the scenes of WAAF - the planned relaunch that never happened - and her journey leveraging her iconic brand as the "Baddest Bitch in Boston" to pivot to podcasting. We talk about the advent of radio's "Portable People Meter" and how it skewed ratings away from rock stations, moving eventually to the final days of WAAF. Carrie talks about how grateful she is to have been able to send the station off and say goodbye, unlike so many other radio folks who don't get the chance. In the interim between her radio and podcasting careers, Mistress Carrie started a series of Facebook live videos, called "Cocktails in the War Room." It was hugely successful, allowed her to keep her brand top of mind, and even generated a significant amount of money (via t-shirts) to feed local veterans during the pandemic. And speaking of veterans, Carrie told us about becoming an embedded reporter (a rarity for music DJ's) with New England troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Finally, we close with her experience leveraging her brand and developing her new podcast.Links:The Mistress Carrie Podcast: https://mistresscarriepodcast.simplecast.com/WAAF's Final Hour On Air: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9nWJOoz5kwGeneration Kill on HBO: https://www.hbo.com/generation-killMistress Carrie on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mistresscarriewaaf/Mistress Carrie on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mistresscarriewaaf/Mistress Carrie on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MistressCarrieJAG in Detroit Podcasts Website: https://jagindetroit.com/JAG on Twitter: https://twitter.com/JAGinDetroitJAG on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JAGinDetroit/
As a former radio guy, I've spent a lot of time covering the often converging lanes of broadcast and podcast. For many in podcasting, the fear is that large radio corporations will "elbow" their way into our space. For me, I worry that these large corporations - iHeartMedia, Entercom, and others - are going to do what they did to radio. That is, put profits ahead of product and make the product watered down and often unlistenable. For example, iheart has furloughed most "non-essential" employees, but hey, they launched a new podcast! It's got commencement speeches for the class of 2020 from celebrities, including Chelsea Handler, Eli Manning, Hillary Clinton and Jimmy Fallon. Entercom put out a press release bragging about their podcasting numbers being up. Wonder how that hit morning and midday hosts Chuck Edwards and Cadillac Jack, both recently laid off from their country station WYCD here in Detroit. Or Mistress Carrie and Mike Hsu formerly of heritage rocker WAAF Boston, sold off to a Christian broadcaster after 50 years for a quick $10 million.Evo Terra, a thought leader in the podcast space, commented this week on broadcasters in our space - his message: get out. Essentially, he railed on fired radio DJ's who are recording into their internal laptop mics and calling it a podcast in an effort to "keep it real." Evo's point: podcasting is much more than the bastard stepchild of radio. Sorry, Bob Pittman.Onto the positive - there are a number of great resources for podcasters that have been published this week. The folks at Podcast Movement have put out a guide to help answer the burning question of what mic should I use? There are a million guides out there on this topic, but this one is very detailed with a lot of videos.Speaking of the fine folks at Podcast Movement (fingers crossed for Dallas this summer), they've also got a very useful piece on popular side hustles for podcasters as, like most of us, they try to make ends meet right now.Speaking of Coronavirus, Podcast Business Journal has a nice "roundtable" article on what to make of the often conflicting podcasting stats in the era of COVID-19 and social isolation.Next weekend (April 25-26), there's going to be a virtual podcast festival, with money being raced for COVID-19 relief.Podapalooza benefit: Podapalooza dot orgThe New York Times reminds us that Facebook, Netflix, and YouTube consumption are all up on desktop. Keep that in mind as you produce your podcast - many of your listeners may be listening on your hosted website or an embedded player, as opposed to their favorite podcast app. Finally, Kim kardashian is apparently launching a podcast? I only mention this to help my SEO.Finally, if you're interested in developing your own podcast, i'm here to help.WebsitePackagesEmailFind me on social at @JAGinDetroitOr call 313-757-2524
