Andrea Werhun embraces being called a whore. But she's really about work, about making money, about boundaries, and yes, having a good time. She's also an activist who is tired of feeling sex workers should be ashamed. Andrea was an escort and then a stripper for several years. She's now published a glossy memoir full of naughty pictures and stories and is about to star in a movie about her life. Ok, she's in her 30's! Mo and Wendy have issues with creeps, violence, and hygiene, but we sure support rights for all. We talk about generational differences, the need for more protection and less shame, Andrea's partner, her mother, and the Johns. (The creeps and not creeps).Andrea Werhun is a writer, a comedian, and now an actor. She and Nicole Bazuin have just published “Modern Whore” with Penguin Random House. It's about to be a major motion picture. You Can watch the episode on YouTube here. A transcription of the episode is available here. We love writing and would love for you to read what we write. I think that many of us live in this world of an kind of a divide of US versus them right You know maybe we have interactions with sex workers in their professional capacity Maybe we have friends who are sex workers and we don't even realize it and they're new. There are many sex workers in my field who are educators and who are also therapist and hearing the stories of how stigma adversely affects their life their work. Their friendships is heartbreaking. But on the flip side. I think we're going to be having a conversation about the positivity about all of the wonderful outcomes of sex work and you know I I have always in my adult. This is part 2 of the interview with Modern Whore extraordinaire Andrea Werhun (or Verhoon if you nasty!) where we pick up where we left off last time, talking about sex work and the law, decriminalization, personal safety, stripping, and then getting into the stories in her sexy book. Andrea’s been through it all, working with the good the bad and the ugly—facing assault, catcallers, breaches of consent, and having to personally deal with these issues that the law refuses to get involved with. She calls for, like most everyone in the sex worker community, decriminalization of prostitution—not legalization! Sex workers have become good at their profession and do not need legalization to standardize their practices, but do require the law to decriminalize their work, protect them from violence, and provide them safety. Finally, Andrea discusses her book, the stories, the backstories, and future plans for this bubbly, charismatic, and witty writer. We dive into the content of the book, how some of these stories were conceived—like microdosing on LSD—and how they’re meant to enlighten, educate, and reveal that seedy underbelly of society that we all hear only horror stories about. On this episode I speak with Andrea Werhun, writer of the Modern Whore, a book nearly as difficult to describe in few words as its author—from sassy to sentimental, poetic to smutty, this girl will make you believe in the church of feminine sexuality and having you begging for communion. Andrea opens up about her personal life as a segue to writing the book, having had a shame-free entry into online porn from an early age and discovering her sexuality, to posting nudes online that later haunted her—all of which gave her the courage to own her body and decide without undue duress to enter into sex work, because she wanted to. After visiting her first strip club, Andrea was enamored by the women goddesses owning their bodies on stage, and immediately she knew that’s what she wanted to do. This eventually led her to enter into escorting, which she did for two years and which sets the premise for the book…which we cover in part two of the interview, so stay tuned. Prostitution is considered to be the "world's oldest profession", yet it remains taboo in many parts of the world. For some, however, it is life-affirming.   Paul and Jordan talk to former escort, Andrea Werhun, and advocate for the differently abled, Paul Swartz, about the value and importance of sex work. Beyond the physical, Andrea and Paul reveal how such work provides clients with emotional and psychological fulfillment, central to a meaningful life and which may be otherwise wholly absent from the client's own. The group also discusses the continued struggle for the decriminalization of sex work in Canada, especially the unnecessary moral and religious barriers that hinder its progress.   Learn more about Andrea, including her recently published book, Modern Whore: A Memoir, at modernwhore.com and Paul here. In addition to being a seasoned real estate agent, Paul is the subject of Short on Short, a documentary by co-hosts Paul and Jordan, on the difficulty of being a small statured man.
