By Friday, February 13th, 1925, rescue workers were getting close to Floyd Collins, who lay trapped deep down in Sand Cave. Above ground, crowds gathered and prayed for Floyd. Reporters questioned state officials for any updates. Photographers readied their cameras around the rescue shaft, hoping to capture the big moment.  By that point, Floyd Collins had been stuck for two weeks. Rescuers were confident they would find him. In the dead of Winter, 1925, cave explorer Floyd Collins crawled, wiggled, and wormed 55 feet below the surface of a sandhole. He was on the hunt for a magnificent cave. But when his lantern began to flicker, he turned back. He re-entered the narrow passageway. In the confusion of darkness, he kicked a protruding rock. When he did, a boulder dropped on his leg. Dirt and debris buried him. Floyd Collins was trapped, 55 feet underground, in the complete dark. All he could do was scream and hope that someone would come to his rescue. Floyd Collins had a dream. He dreamt that one day, he'd emerge victorious in the Kentucky Cave Wars. In that era, people made easy money turning beautiful, awe-inspiring caves into tourist destinations. The tough part was *finding* the cave. Finding a cave took months of dangerous, exhausting work, but Floyd Collins was up to the task. In January of 1925, he felt certain that he was digging his way toward a magnificent one. In this episode of Capital for Good we speak with Bob Steel, partner and vice chairman of Perella Weinberg Partners, whose career has spanned the pinnacles of business, government and nonprofit leadership. Following nearly three decades at Goldman Sachs, Steel held senior roles at the US Treasury, as Under Secretary for Domestic Finance under President George W. Bush, and in New York City government as Deputy Mayor for Economic Development under Mike Bloomberg; was CEO of Wachovia Corporation and Perella Weinberg; and along the way has served on numerous boards, corporate and civic, including at major universities like Duke, important ideas and policy organizations like the Aspen Institute, and several of New York City's anchor institutions. We begin with some of the formative individuals and institutions that would shape Steel's trajectory: his parents, who set an example of service to their North Carolina community; the attention of Dr. Joel Fleishman, a Duke Professor who challenged Steel to become a more engaged student; and the opportunity to join Goldman Sachs in 1976 when John Whitehead and John Weinberg took over the leadership of the firm. "I got on the bus at the right time," Steel says. Steel describes what it was like to work at Goldman Sachs in a period of extraordinary growth and globalization. Over close to three decades, he built several businesses across the US and Europe — "multiple careers in one institution" — and ultimately served as the firm's vice chairman and member of its management committee. "The moral of the story," he observes, "is that well-led firms that are growing create opportunities that are pretty special." In 2006, at the urging of fellow Goldman Sachs partner — and recently confirmed US Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson — Steel went to Treasury to serve as Under Secretary for Domestic Finance. Within a year, the country was in the throes of the financial crisis, and with the support of Paulson and Fed Chair Ben Bernanke, Steel and his colleagues labored to prevent the worst impacts of the crisis on the American people, and to begin to steer the economy to more stable ground. After Treasury, Steel returned to the private sector as CEO of Wachovia, where he led the bank's sale to Wells Fargo. Soon after Mike Bloomberg recruited him to serve as Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, where he would oversee the administration's five borough economic development strategy and job creation efforts across more than a dozen city agencies: tens of thousands of employees and billions of dollars in annual operating budgets. We discuss a number of the major initiatives that Steel and the Bloomberg team undertook, among them the creation of the Cornell Technion campus, today a center of applied science in the city and region. We also discuss Mayor Bloomberg's vision for long-term investments, and the latitude given to an exceptional and collegial cohort of talented commissioners. "It might be my best job ever, I learned so much," Steel says. Through these experiences, Steel has come to understand the distinct but complementary roles of the private, public, and nonprofit sectors, and their respective and mutually supportive "vectors of leverage." "You can't have successful business without government," he believes, "and you can't have good government without successful businesses. And then you add NGOs that provide exceptional seasoning and consciousness that is beneficial." Although no longer at city hall, Steel remains deeply involved in the life of the city, with board roles at Lincoln Center, Rockefeller University, the Hospital for Special Surgery, the Economic Club of New York, the Partnership for New York City, The Morgan Library, and the New York Climate Exchange. We touch on New York's recovery from the pandemic; why some of today's challenges, including affordability, are a function of the city's success (i.e., not enough housing for all the people who want to be in New York); the competition from smaller cities across the country as attractive places to live and work; and the opportunity and imperative to make long-term investments in the city's future: schools, infrastructure, arts, parks, among them.  We conclude where the conversation began: "I'm so appreciative of the organizations and people that helped me grow," Steel says. The American Civil War and the end of slavery in the US may seem like one and the same from our modern perspective, but for those living through the conflict, the abolition of human bondage was anything but certain. Even into the last days of the war, slave traders in Confederate-held cities continued to auction off human beings, realizing handsome profits as they imposed violence and family separation on their subjects.   In his new book, An Unholy Traffic: Slave Trading in the Civil War South, Robert K.D. Colby brings together a wide variety of sources to offer up a never-before seen look into the slave trade during the American Civil War. In this episode, he joins Ben and guest co-host Tim Talbott to explain how the slave trade evolved, why slave traders remained confident in the future of slavery even during the Civil War, and how the combined trauma of slavery and war impacted enslaved Americans long after their freedom had been secured.   Robert K.D. Colby is Assistant Professor of History at Ole Miss who specializes in the Civil War and the history of slavery. Those responsible are prosecuted while those who speak truth to power are exonerated.Robert Tanenbaum, who in 1976 was appointed deputy chief counsel in charge of the congressional investigation into the assassination of President Kennedy, provides stunning and shocking "immutable facts" that reveal unequivocally that the government's reliance on the Warren Commission (WC) investigation and the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) alleged probe were reprehensibly and ultimately gut-wrenchingly misleading and downright dishonest. Guest Ron Chapple is the VP of Global Strategic Solutions Digital Twins at NV5 Geospatial. He leads a team that works with clients worldwide to acquire, process, and analyze high-resolution lidar and imaging data to create digital twins for various industries and applications. The team uses leading-edge technologies and sensors to capture and visualize data. The digital twins created by NV5 are virtual representations of physical objects, processes, or systems that can be used for real-time monitoring, analysis, and simulation. Digital twins can have applications for many industries, including aviation, energy, education, manufacturing, construction, healthcare, and transportation. Organizations can also use them for training and emergency planning and response. Ron describes how geospatially correct digital twins are created using LiDAR, optical, and other sensors, typically with helicopters or drones, and sometimes with fixed-wing aircraft. We learn how multiple sensor data is combined for the digital twins and the requirement for precise piloting. Ron also illustrates aviation applications for digital twins by explaining some of the airport projects undertaken by NV5. These applications include obstruction analysis, real-time monitoring of ground traffic, and operations simulation. Ron has more than 10 years of experience in lidar and imaging. He founded GEO1, a company that specialized in electric utility, oil and gas, archaeology, and coastal and highway corridor acquisition projects. GEO1 was acquired by NV5 Geospatial in June 2022 and has expanded in scope to include virtual reality, virtual production, and digital twin creation. Ron got his start in aerial cinematography. He worked with USA Today and National Geographic on projects that won a Pulitzer Prize and several EMMY awards and traveled to remote and challenging locations, such as Patagonia, the Arctic Circle, Mt. Everest, Colombia, and Hawaii, to collect and document data that can help preserve and protect natural and cultural heritage. Aviation News Boeing Board Names Kelly Ortberg President and CEO The Boeing board of directors selected Robert K. "Kelly" Ortberg as the company's next president and CEO, succeeding Dave Calhoun, effective August 8, 2024. Ortberg began his career as an engineer at Texas Instruments, then joined Rockwell Collins as a program manager, eventually becoming its president and CEO. He steered the company's integration with United Technologies which then became RTX after merging with Raytheon. Ortberg served on the RTX Board of Directors and is the former Chair of the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) Board of Governors. U.S. appeals court blocks airline fee disclosure rule The U.S. Transportation Department's new rule requiring airlines and ticket agents to disclose service fees along with airfare has been temporarily blocked by a U.S. appeals court. The industry asked the court for a temporary block and the three-judge panel said the rule "likely exceeds DOT's authority and will irreparably harm airlines." The suit was brought by United, American, Delta, JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, Airlines for America, and the International Air Transport Association. The American Civil War and the end of slavery in the US may seem like one and the same from our modern perspective, but for those living through the conflict, the abolition of human bondage was anything but certain. Even into the last days of the war, slave traders in Confederate-held cities continued to auction off human beings, realizing handsome profits as they imposed violence and family separation on their subjects. In his new book, An Unholy Traffic: Slave Trading in the Civil War South, Robert K.D. Colby brings together a wide variety of sources to offer up a never-before seen look into the slave trade during the American Civil War. In this episode, he joins Ben and guest co-host Tim Talbott to explain how the slave trade evolved, why slave traders remained confident in the future of slavery even during the Civil War, and how the combined trauma of slavery and war impacted enslaved Americans long after their freedom had been secured. Robert K.D. Colby is Assistant Professor of History at Ole Miss who specializes in the Civil War and the history of slavery. His newest book, An Unholy Traffic was published by Oxford University Press in April 2024 and is available in both print and audiobook.
