Former Kerry football team manager Mick O'Dwyer has died at the age of forty- eight. Tá iarbhainisteoir fhoireann peile Chiarraí Mick O'Dwyer tar éis bháis in aois a ocht mbliana agus ceithre scór. 'Micko' was one of Ireland's greatest sporting figures and won many medals, championships, trophies and awards as a player and manager throughout his life. Duine de mhórphearsana spóirt na hÉireann ab ea 'Micko' agus is iomaí bonn, craobh, corn agus gradam nach iad a bhuaigh sé mar imreoir agus mar bhainisteoir i gcaitheamh a shaoil. He won four All-Ireland championships as a player and eight championships as a pioneering manager of that famous elite team that Kerry had in the seventies and eighties. Ceithre chraobh Uile- Éireann a bhuaigh sé mar imreoir agus ocht gcraobh mar bhainisteoir ceannródaíoch ar an scothfhoireann cháiliúil úd a bhí ag Ciarraí sna seachtóidí agus sna hochtóidí. The Kerry team at that time, led by the Waterford man, were often in footy duels with the great Dublin team led by Kevin Heffernan, games that are deeply engraved and carved in stone for the Gaelic Athletic Association. Ba mhinic na Ciarraígh an uair úd, faoi stiúir fhear an Choireáin, i ndeabhaidh chosbháire le sárfhoireann Bhaile Átha Cliath a raibh Kevin Heffernan ina ceannas, cluichí atá greanta go domhain agus go snoite i gcloch oiris Chumann Lúthchleas Gael. Gan Craobh na hÉireann a bhac, bhuaigh Mick O'Dwyer Craobh na Mumhan 23 uair agus an tSraith Náisúnta aon uair déag mar imreoir agus mar bhainisteoir araon. Although he was a staunch Kerryman, his talent was sought after in other counties as well and he was lured by teams that were not performing well – namely, Kildare, Laois, Wicklow and Clare – in the hope that he would turn the malt into ale, even though he was a man who had always abstained from intoxicating drink. Cé gur Ciarraíoch dílis go smior a bhí ann, bhí tóir ar a ardchumas i gcontaetha eile leis agus mealladh é ag foirne nach raibh ag cruthú go maith – mar atá, Cill Dara, Laois, Cill Mhantáin agus an Clár – le súil go ndéanfadh sé leann den bhraich, siúd is go mb'fhear é a staon riamh ón deoch mheisciúil. In fact, Kildare won the Leinster Championship in 1998 and 2000 under the guidance of Mick O'Dwyer and that team reached the All-Ireland final in 1998, when they were beaten by Galway by four goals. Go deimhin, bhain Cill Dara Craobh Laighean i 1998 agus in 2000 faoi lámh stiúrtha Mick O'Dwyer agus chuaigh an fhoireann sin chomh fada le cluiche ceannais Chraobh na hÉireann i 1998, tráth a fuair Gaillimh an ceann is fearr orthu le ceithre chúilín. It's a massive weekend in Cork GAA with the hurlers hosting Tipperary in a sold-out league final.SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh will be packed but was it the right call to make it a double-header with Offaly v Waterford in Division 1B, given the interest in the Faithful County? Home advantage might help the Rebels on the pitch come Sunday but it hasn't proved much use in terms of securing tickets. It's hard to be overly critical of GAA for putting the Páirc in the spotlight in a contest that will generate an electric atmosphere but that's scant consolation to the fans who won't get to go. The Munster Championship matches also go on sale this week and all four games with Cork will most likely sell, out. Stand tickets are being distributed through the clubs but interest is at its highest since the mid-noughties.We preview the final and make the case for Cork bridging a long gap since their last league success in 1998.We also discuss the minor and U20 action last week and how regularly red cards are now being flashed for what looks like minimal contact, which saw Barry O'Flynn and Ben Walsh dismissed against Clare. The footballers are in championship action on Saturday, heading to Limerick to face Division 4 league winners Limerick who will relish the underdogs tag. Cork ended their league with a decent bit of momentum though and should have enough to set up a Munster semi-final in the Páirc on Easter Saturday with Division 1 champs Kerry. We look at the U20 football squad ahead of their provincial opener and round up the latest in the league after three games across the seven divisions. Clare U20 Hurling Manager Terence Fahy Ahead Of Munster Championship
The Echo Sport Podcast takes in all the latest GAA action. This week we break down the Rebel rout of All-Ireland champions Clare on Sunday afternoon. Pat Ryan's side up to target the inside line and the reward was six goals, with Cork finally converting the chances they've been creating throughout the league.Brian Hayes was the official TG4 Man of the Match but Declan Dalton was also unstoppable and Shane Barrett showed his best All-Star form. However, was it a case of going too well, too soon? Did the Rebels show too much? The weather and the crowd made it feel like championship but Clare now know exactly what to expect on Easter Sunday in the Munster Championship opener. The other major talking point from the game, and across the hurling weekend, was the flurry of red cards shown. On the local front, Fr O'Neills had a fine win in Division 1 over champions Sars while Charleville impressed against Blackrock.William Buckley was electric as St Finbarr's defeated Glen Rovers and Colin Walsh excelled for Kanturk in their loss to Douglas, while in Division 2, Daire Connery and Kevin Moynihan were superb for Na Piarsaigh in their draw with BallincolligYou can listen to the Echo Sport Podcast every week wherever you get your podcasts or on www.echolive.ie/podcast Hosted on Acast. The Banner's Munster campaign is edging ever closer, with Cork making the visit to Cusack Park on April 20th. Clare minor football manager Dermot Coughlan says his side will have regrets about their slow start after defeat to Cork in the Munster semi final. A scoring spree of 1-5 without replay in the opening quarter proved to be the match winning period for the Rebels, as they went on to record a 1-13 to 0-8 win. Clare played two thirds of the contest with 14 men following a straight red card for midfielder Aidan Weaver, but battled bravely in the second period. Coughlan says while the numerical disadvantage ultimately made the difference, attentions will soon turn to their All-Ireland series.

A key member of the Clare Senior Hurling squad insists their focus is securing early season silverware this weekend. Clare last claimed National Hurling Honours in 2016 after overcoming Waterford in a replay at Semple Stadium. Eire Óg's David Reidy who's struck nine points for Clare in the campaign so far, says their immediate priority is to win the league.
A former National league winner with Clare believes the strength in depth of the current squad is a huge asset ahead of their National Hurling League final with Kilkenny. The Banner can boast no major injuries, while both Tony Kelly and Shane O'Donnell could be set for a return to the squad for Saturday's decider. Brian Lohan's side will take on The Cats in Semple Stadium in Thurles at 7:15pm, looking for a first Division 1 title since 2016. Philly McMahon joins Sinéad Kissane and the Irish Independent's Conor McKeon for his weekly take on the Football Championship, with Cork v Kerry, the influence of soccer and the behaviour of managers on the sideline all up for discussion on the latest show. After Cork refusing to play Kerry in Killarney, they now face the Kingdom in Páirc Uí Rinn in the Munster Championship but are they onto a hiding to nothing? They've poked the bear and should be mindful, says Philly. The influence of soccer on the Cliffords and on Philly's own career is also discussed with Philly highlighting how spatial awareness is just one of the positives that can be brought into a player's Gaelic football career which we're seeing in spades with David Clifford. And what about managers micro-managing on the sidelines, will it eventually become a thing of the past? Philly reckons it should be, saying the game should go towards rugby where the manager is in the stands seeing what the players can't see. Plus there was also mention of that Cody-Shefflin handshake and what it all could mean…. Every Monday the Throw-In brings you the best insights and analysis from all the weekend GAA action. The win sets up a semi-final clash with Waterford in Thurles next Thursday night. In the strangest of League finales, this weekend saw Limerick post a massive 36 points over Clare in the hurling decider which also doubled up as the Munster Championship opener, while Kerry’s 14 point win over Donegal saw them collect their first League title since 2017. Donnchadh Boyle and Ciaran Whelan joined Will Slattery and Michael Verney on this week’s Throw-In as they analysed all the weekend action, assessing how the teams are also faring for the up-coming Championship games. It was certainly the statement of intent from John Kiely’s men who retained their League crown and march on to a crunch Munster hurling semi-final tie next Sunday with Michael Verney describing Limerick as ‘the complete side’ who are laying down the marker for the others to follow. Meanwhile, in the football, Ciaran Whelan was impressed with Kerry’s continued progress under Peter Keane and says they are the team to rival Dublin for the Championship. Since returning from the AFL, Tyrone’s Conor McKenna has also starred for his county and Whelan says he is one to watch but it is still Dublin who are the team to beat. Away from the top of the table, Mayo were relegated to Division 2 after their narrow defeat to Tyrone but they can set their season right against Leitrim in the opening round of Connacht next Sunday. With focus turning to the Championship between now and Christmas, the League’s final games have whetted appetites and given GAA fans the hope that the games will continue and some sense of normality can return ending 2020 on some sort of high. There was just hurling action in the Allianz Leagues over the weekend and on this week’s Throw-In, Vincent Hogan, Donnchadh Boyle and John Mullane joined Will Slattery to look back on all the games. Galway’s resurgence under Shane O’Neill and their 3-12 scored in the second half to seal victory over Tipperary caught the eye the most and John Mullane reckons their potent forward line could be one to watch in the summer. Waterford have also been rejuvenated under a new manager and Liam Cahill’s philosophy and ethos were highlighted by Vincent Hogan and the panel when discussing the Deise’s new energy and attitude. May 10th sees Tipperary visit Waterford in their Munster Championship fixture and Liam Sheedy knows Tipp have an awful lot of work to do between now and then to come away with a win. Limerick Camogie manager Declan Nash is looking forward to his side's Munster Championship outing against Cork at the weekend.
After the opening round of Allianz Football and Hurling League games, Tomás Ó Sé and Brendan Cummins joined Will Slattery, Michael Verney and Conor McKeon to review all the big games. Is it too early to raise question marks after Dublin's defeat to Monaghan in Clones and are Kerry going too defensive after their dour victory over Tyrone? In the hurling, Brendan Cummins says the shadow boxing is going on until the summer and Tipperary against Clare in Ennis in the Munster Championship will be a different matter altogether. While Cork's performance against Kilkenny was described as 'abject', there is still so much to admire about Kilkenny and how Brian Cody has once again brought in and developed new talent. Plus, Will and Michael give their performances of the week - Colin Guilfoyle's one-handed point or Sean O'Shea's outrageous sideline anyone? - and the night after the Royal Rumble, they ask what GAA star would make it in the WWE?
